Firefox 17 released

Firefox 17 is out now, and you can download it for Windows and Mac.

In line with recent updates, this is not a radical update, but there are some changes. The most notable is the introduction of Facebook integration. Click here to enable this feature once Firefox has been updated. This adds four Facebook buttons to Firefox, as you can see below, allowing you to check notifications, messages, friend requests, and open your profile.

You can also have the Facebook Sidebar open all the time, which is great for Facebook addicts, but I think it takes up valuable browsing space, so I’ll keep it switched off!

Internet Explorer 10 preview for Windows 7 released. Find out what’s changed.

Internet Explorer 10 has been a Windows 8 exclusive so far, but Windows 7 users can get their hands on the preview today. What’s changed from IE 9? For many Windows 7 users, there will be no apparent change other than the updated interface. Windows 8 users running Internet Explorer 10 will notice the biggest changes as Microsoft designed IE from the ground up to work with touch. Windows 7 users won’t get the simplified touch interface nor will they get handy features like sharing from the Windows Charms Bar.

Google Chrome 23 released with controversial Do Not Track support

Google released its latest stable version of the Chrome browser, version 23. In this version, Windows users will gain support for GPU-accelerated video decoding for better performance and battery life (up to 25% better). Users will also get the controversial “Do Not Track” feature, which opts users out of targeted advertising.

While Do Not Track is opt-in only, there are many advertising companies that feel Do Not Track will provide a sub-par user experience.

Windows Phone 8 launch recap

Microsoft released Windows 8 to the public last week and it continues the momentum with the official launch of Windows Phone 8. While the new Windows Phone 8 devices aren’t readily available yet, Vice President Joe Belfiore announced more features in the new operating system that he didn’t touch on during the Windows Phone Summit back in June.

The Windows Phone Summit was a beginner’s introduction to the upgraded operating system, highlighting hardware and more developer specific information. Today’s launch announcement was directed more toward the consumer.

Firefox Marketplace released for Firefox Aurora on Android

If Google Play isn’t enough for your Android app store needs, you’ve now got another option. Firefox Marketplace is now available through the latest Firefox pre-beta for Android.

This comes only a handful of days after the launch of Firefox 16 on desktop PCs, and was an anticipated element of Mozilla’s development of its popular web and mobile browser platforms.

Tweetbot 1.0 for Mac released

Following the much publicized release of Tweetbot Alpha in July, the final stable version of Tweetbot 1.0 has been released. You’d better be quick if you want a copy however. Twitter recently limited the number of users per Twitter client that can access its API so the developer Tapbots will have to limit availability at some stage. This explains why they’ve priced it at a relatively hefty 19.99 to limit the user base to those that really love Tweetbot.

Google releases Google Calendar standalone app

Google has a few Nexus-branded devices running the stock version of Android 4.0+. The first party apps like Google Talk, Gmail, and the Google Play apps are portals to different services that are offered in the Android ecosystem. Google Calendar is another app that was previously locked into the stock operating system while other device manufacturers developed and released their own calendar apps that worked the same way.

Now Google has released a standalone Google Calendar app to the public. Unfortunately it only supports Android 4.0.3 or later so Gingerbread (2.3+) and Honeycomb (3.0+) users are still missing out. Allowing users to use a first party app is a great way to preview the stock Android experience while unifying a Google account over different devices.

Mozilla releases Firefox Metro Preview for Windows 8

With Windows 8′s official launch right around the corner (October 26th), Mozilla is scrambling to finish their Modern UI version of Firefox. Today Mozilla released its first preview build of Firefox for Windows 8’s Modern UI, called Firefox Metro Preview. Users can now download and test this newest version of Firefox.

Firefox Metro Preview has two interface modes: it can function as a desktop version of Firefox or as a Modern UI application. To enable the Modern UI interface, users must set “Nightly” as the default browser in Windows.

Call of Duty: Black Ops released for Mac

Mac users have been a bit neglected when it comes to Call of Duty but Black Ops for Mac has finally been released on the Steam platform. 2008 was the last time Mac users enjoyed a new Call of Duty game and since then Modern Warfare 2 and 3 plus Black Ops have been released on PC.

You’ll need a fairly high-spec Mac to run Black Ops and have at least 15GB of free disk space. The minimum technical requirements are OS X: 10.7.4, 2.4GHz Intel processor, 4GB RAM and 15GB HD space and either a Radeon (NVidia) or GeForce graphics card. However, Aspyr warn that 2012 MacBook Pros are not supported at the moment although this should be fixed soon.
