CD Projekt Red encourages you to make mods if you want to work in the world of video games

Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 unofficially known as “Cyberpunk 2,, is in an early stage of production at CD Projekt Red and their new studio in the United States. A notable characteristic of the team is that about half of the developers working on the RPG missions started as modders, reflecting a growing trend in the gaming industry to value and leverage the talent of the modding community.

Pawel Sasko, responsible for missions in Cyberpunk 2077 and now associate director of the sequel, highlighted in an interview with Flow Games the importance of mods and the composition of the team. “Half of the missions team [of Cyberpunk 2], the team that creates the missions, is currently made up of 24 people, half of whom are former modders,” said Sasko. Some of these modders previously created mods for company games, such as The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077, while others, including the game’s mission director himself, created mods for other games, such as StarCraft.

Sasko also mentioned that the company has a small team called Jigsoft, composed exclusively of modders. This team, made up of approximately 20 people, was responsible for developing the modding tools for The Witcher 3. “I don’t want to call them subcontractors because they’re not really, they’re part of us. We work together on various things,” Sasko added.

The associate director of Cyberpunk 2 praised the value of mods and encouraged aspiring developers to start in the industry through mod creation. “I always advise young people, when they ask me how to get into the industry, to make mods,” Sasko commented. “Some of the best people we have are former mod creators.”

Embody, a company specializing in spatial audio, customizes the sound of the game for each player. By using their technology to model sound in a specific space, the HRTF equation allows a simulation of how sound waves interact with the player’s head and auditory channels. This adjustment, along with head tracking, allows the Immerse package to more accurately map how sound is generated and played in the game.

What does patch 2.1 bring to Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt has announced that next week they will release an update for Cyberpunk 2077 that will include “new and anticipated gameplay elements.”

Update 2.1 will be released alongside the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on December 5th.

As reported by Bloomberg, CD Projekt used AI to add new voice lines for Miłogost Reczek, a popular Polish voice actor. Reczek provided the Polish voice for the character Viktor Vektor in Cyberpunk 2077, but he passed away in 2021.

Because of this, CD Projekt had to find a way to use the character in the game’s Phantom Liberty expansion. The solution came in the form of artificial intelligence.

Erase Reczek forever, or harness AI to do good

One option was to hire a new voice actor to play the role of Viktor in the expansion, and have that actor re-record Reczek’s lines for the base game to ensure the character sounded the same throughout the experience.

However, according to CD Projekt’s localization director, Mikołaj Szwed, as explained to Bloomberg, the company “didn’t like this approach” because Reczek “was one of the best Polish voice actors” and his performance was considered “stellar.”

Instead, the company hired a new voice actor to perform the new lines and used a voice cloning program called Respeecher to change the voice and make it sound as if Reczek was delivering the lines.

CD Projekt claims to have obtained permission from Reczek’s family before moving forward with the plan, and Szwed added that the actor’s children “were very understanding.”

Last month, members of SAG-AFTRA, the American actors’ union, overwhelmingly voted in favor of a potential video game strike. But in this case, we are talking about using AI for a good cause.
