Steam will allow selling games made with AI (as long as there is no deception involved)

Steam, just in case, has welcomed our new leaders with open arms. In June 2023, they were closing the door to generative AI, but now things have completely changed.

It remains to be seen whether AI is the new NFT or, on the contrary, it is the ultimate technological revolution that will leave all of us on Earth outdated. And Steam, just in case, has welcomed our new leaders with open arms. In June 2023, they blocked the way for generative AI, but now everything has changed completely.

Artificial Games

Starting right now, Steam has surrendered to the evidence and will allow users to upload games made in part or entirely with Artificial Intelligence. In fact, they will allow the vast majority of them unless they commit brutal copyright infringements… And as long as it is properly indicated for potential buyers to have all the information.

There will be two possibilities: either previously created content or content generated in real time. In the first case, we are talking about art, sounds, dialogues or music created during programming, and in the second case, for example, the use of ChatGPT so that the characters’ responses are always original. However, in this case, the programmer must explain specifically what they have done to prevent illegal content from being reproduced.

They also claim that real-time AI sexual games will be prohibited, but in reality, all of this is just smoke and mirrors: no matter how much they want to sell the idea that generative AI is capable of creating without violating copyright, we all know that their models have been trained with millions of images from authors who have not received any financial compensation or given their consent.

Is this the future, to scrutinize every game to check that no one has copied authors of more or less prestige? Wouldn’t it be easier to simply hire an artist or a writer to do the job? The question shouldn’t be so difficult to answer.

Some gamers prefer controllers on PC

Valve is tuned in to the rising trend of controller love among PC gamers. They threw out some eye-opening stats, revealing that about 12% of all active Steam players regularly opt for controllers. And it’s not just any controllers – for certain games, over 80% of players embrace the controller life. Think ball sports games or intense RPGs – controllers are the weapon of choice.

Valve’s update isn’t just about numbers; it’s about recognizing the controller revolution on Steam. Last year, they logged over three billion game sessions with controllers, and here’s the kicker – 60% of them used an Xbox gamepad, with 27% opting for the PlayStation gamepad. That’s a significant leap from four years ago when Steam recorded around 990 million sessions. Controllers are officially taking center stage on Steam.

Here is Steam’s official statement(You can find the full announcement here):

Whenever we’re thinking about what areas of Steam to work on, we like to turn to data, especially to note how things change over time and which indicators suggest particular player interests. When we dig into controller usage data, we see a few interesting changes over the past few years.

  • There were over 3 Billion game sessions that included a controller in the past year
    • 60% Xbox controller
    • 27% PlayStation models
    • The remaining % is made up of Steam Deck, Switch Pro, and hundreds of other controller models
  • The same period four years ago (ending Nov 2019) had 990 Million controller sessions
    • 76% Xbox controllers
    • 19% PlayStation controllers
  • During these four years, PlayStation controllers saw a 4x increase in sessions

Diablo IV arrives on Steam: here’s how it affects you if you’re a player

This year’s most diabolical game will arrive on Steam just for Halloween. This is the masterstroke that has been achieved after the purchase of Xbox at…

For me, it’s one of the best games of 2023, although veteran players of the series are complaining that the endgame isn’t as it should be: bland and with hardly any rewards and incentives to keep playing.

Well, as we were saying, Diablo IV, one of the most significant games of the year, will arrive on Steam on October 17. The news comes through the gaming news and deals Twitter account Wario64, who spotted an announcement of the infernal RPG on Steam before anyone else.

While it’s available on consoles (except for Switch), the PC version of the game was previously exclusive to Blizzard’s Battle.net service.

A decision that has been a long time coming and where Microsoft has little influence

The expansion of Diablo IV to Steam is in line with Blizzard’s previous efforts to attract more PC gamers, as they made Overwatch 2 available on Steam earlier this year.

Blizzard has stated its intention to bring more of its games to Steam but has not shared which games they plan to offer there or when they would be available.

Overwatch 2 was the first game Blizzard released on the platform and was met with immediate criticism. It currently has an ‘overwhelmingly negative’ rating with over 190,000 reviews, likely due to players’ dissatisfaction with the implementation of a battle pass and canceled content.

“Diablo IV, released in June this year, shouldn’t have that problem as it was generally well-received, and players are quite happy with it. Additionally, Diablo IV will be coming to Steam alongside the highly anticipated Season 2.

For this reason, it’s expected that at least in the first few weeks, user reviews will be quite positive, following a successful first season. Blizzard is taking a significant risk with this Season 2 and Steam launch. There’s a lot at stake.

By the way, if you want to play Diablo IV on your Steam Deck, here’s a very useful guide we released a few days ago to play any PC game on Valve’s console.”

This is the most used graphics card, according to Steam’s global survey

The expensive prices of the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti coupled with somewhat disappointing performance, and combined with the high availability of the RTX 3060…

Few things are more interesting than the surveys Steam publishes every quarter about the configurations their customers use. And this would be uninteresting in other circumstances, but being a survey with tens of millions of users, the sample size is tremendous.

September has been another month in which the RTX 3060 has proven to be the GPU with the best performance (1.4% more) among participants in the Steam survey.

The high prices of the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti, combined with somewhat disappointing performance, along with the high availability of the RTX 3060 in the second-hand market, have pushed Nvidia’s card to take the top position.

That’s why the RTX 3060 leads the main GPU chart with a share of 6.27%, ahead of the previous number one, the GTX 1650, which is found in 4.78% of the participants’ machines.

The RTX 4000 series fails to convince gamers

The extremely expensive RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 failed to increase their performance, and the RTX 4060 was the best in the series with a tiny increase of 0.31%.

Meanwhile, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX continues to decline, dropping by just 0.2% and currently occupying the 73rd position.

Last month was not the first time the RTX 3060 claimed the top spot in the main GPU chart. It also happened in March, but that month saw a series of unusual changes; the RTX 3060 experienced a massive month-over-month increase of 6.2%, something nearly unheard of.

Valve never provided an explanation, and the survey results returned to normal in April, with the RTX 3060 dropping from the first position.

The most common features of PC gamers

In the rest of the survey, trends were reversed in several categories. Windows 11 has been narrowing the gap with Windows 10 for months, but the older operating system surged almost 2% to nearly 58% in September, while Windows 11 dropped by 1.79% to 37.4%.

Another shift in the status quo occurred in the CPU table. AMD has spent most of the year closing the gap with Intel, but the red team dropped by 2.24% in the latest count, while the blue team increased its market share to 68.77%. Intel could widen the gap further when Raptor Lake Refresh chips land in a few weeks.

Moreover, having six cores solidified as the most common result after a 2.74% increase. Most people have over 1 TB of free space on their hard drives, while the most typical amount of VRAM remained at 8 GB, which is becoming problematic for an increasing number of titles.

Lastly, English continues to be the most common language, but only by a margin of 0.11% after simplified Chinese rose by 5.34%.
