How many times have you listened to an album and thought that some of its songs sounded a bit strange? It could be a whisper, a strange phrase, a murmur, or even something subliminal: there are dozens of songs that hide all kinds of mysterious messages that only the most astute and sharp-eared can recognize… But some of the stories woven with them are absolutely incredible and worthy of a movie. Are you ready to discover these 6 hits that hide much more than it seems?

Better Days (Angelo)

“I speak of those I love, of how much I miss them, I speak of the pride and the strength that beats within my heart”. This was the chorus of this 2010 song that Colombians will instantly recognize: it was sung by Angelo, one of the finalists of Factor X in the country, and the actress and singer Natalia Gutiérrez. But Mejores Días was not planned to be a hit, but to send a message to those kidnapped by the FARC for years.

At first, they thought of doing it with a joke, where the beeps to hide the insults would conceal a Morse code, but they thought it would be too obvious, and preferred to send it with the rhythm of an emotional song, to give more clues to the hostages. It was a message of hope that they heard through the radio and was hidden in three different places in the song: “19 people rescued. You are next. Do not lose hope”. When they say that music lifts the spirit, no one imagined to what extent it was true.

YYZ (Rush)

Another Morse code example. In this case, the band Rush, in 1987, decided to be very specific in the title of their song YYZ in its introduction… through bells that ring in a most interesting pattern. Basically, because what they “say” continuously is YYZ. And what is YYZ really? The code for Toronto International Airport, which is also the place where the band was founded. That’s what you call a full-fledged tribute.

10,000 Days (Tool)

There are many groups that, especially in the 80s, added an extra track after the last one, but Tool gave the ultimate hidden song in 2006 with the release of the album 10,000 Days. In addition to achieving three hits on the sales charts, they sold more than half a million copies in just the first week. But even the most seasoned listeners didn’t notice the group’s extra song, over ten minutes long, which occurred… when you overlaid three different tracks.

Specifically, if you combine the songs 10,000 Days, Viginti Tres, and Wings for Marie, you will have a new song with different lyrics. An unreleased track within three already existing tracks. It may not be the best or the most remembered, but it is certainly a very clever way to innovate in music. Oh! On the same album, we also have a song that, if you listen to it backward, has a hidden message, although it’s nothing satanic: “Work hard, stay in school, listen to your mother, your father was right.” Wholesome rock.

Detour through your mind (B-52)

Although among the songs that hide messages when played backwards, perhaps the most curious is the one by B-52, which in the album Bouncing off the Satellites, from 1986, specifically in the track Detour Thru Your Mind, included the phrase “I buried my parakeet in the backyard. Oh, no, you’re playing the record backwards. Be careful, you might destroy your needle. Imagine hearing this without having the slightest idea of what was going to happen. A 10 out of 10 for the ultimate trolling.

Revolution 9 (The Beatles)

The Beatles have acknowledged placing some messages that could be heard if you played the songs backwards. For example, in Free as a bird, we can hear the phrase “Turned out nice again”, with the idea of having a bit of fun with all those who claimed to hear hidden messages in their records. But it is undeniable that in Revolution 9, an experimental piece from the White Album (parodied years later in The Simpsons with a pseudo-Yoko Ono saying “Number eight, number eight”), something very mysterious is heard.

Specifically, the phrase “Turn me on, dead man.” The record is from 1968, and the conspiracy theory suggests that Paul McCartney died in 1966 and has since been replaced by someone very similar to him. The “Paul is dead” theory has continued to this day, with apparent clues that the Beatles left throughout their later albums… and it’s a rabbit hole I recommend exploring if you want to spend the next few hours tangled in impossible conspiracy theories. I also tell you that you need a bit of imagination to hear “Turn me on, dead man.”

Reise, Reise (Rammstein)

We end with another song that hides a secret that very few have heard. And it happens… Before the song! Rammstein decided to put an introduction on the CD before track 1, known as “song 0”. If you wanted to listen to it, you had no choice but to rewind the music backwards to find it, since by default players started at track 1. If you’re curious, what you hear is a Japanese plane about to have an accident. What we’ve missed because of Spotify!

Life in plastic, it's fantastic: how 'Barbie Girl' was made

If you’ve never danced to “Come on, Barbie, let’s go party” let me tell you that you’ve made some bad choices in life.

Think what you want about ‘Barbie Girl.’ Whether it’s a masterpiece, a grating song, a sticky earworm, or a relic of another era, it doesn’t matter. The truth is that 25 years have passed since Aqua first released it into the world, and thanks to ‘Barbie,’ it remains on everyone’s lips. If you’ve never danced to the rhythm of “Come on, Barbie, let’s go party,” let me tell you that you’ve made some poor life choices.

Life in plastic, it’s fantastic

Aqua wasn’t always called Aqua. In 1995, they were known as Joyspeed and were still trying to find their sound, which they achieved thanks to a synthesizer capable of turning notes into various instruments. While they were experimenting with it and composing songs like ‘Doctor Jones’ for their debut album, luck struck when Soren Rasted, one of the group members, attended an art exhibition filled with Barbie dolls and thought, “Life in plastic, it’s fantastic.”

It may seem like a song like ‘Barbie Girl’ is easy to make, but far from it: everyone wanted to contribute lines, change chords, remove sexual innuendos, or make the rhymes less cheesy. And when it came time to record, there was an extra challenge: Lene Nystrom, the lead singer, initially sang with a very high-pitched tone and insisted on lowering it a bit to avoid straining her throat during concerts. Yes, all those high notes were not achieved through computer manipulation.

The song was released to the world with much more sexually suggestive lyrics than anyone would have expected (“You can brush my hair, undress me everywhere”), and luck would have it that it caught the attention of Peder Pedersen, a film director who was doing video art in his basement at the time and was able to direct the music video the following day. The music video has gone down in history with over one billion views on YouTube, but it was actually improvised on the spot.

In fact, one of the challenges was that Lene refused to follow the storyboard, wear a blonde wig, and act as Barbie, so they had to hire two actors to portray Barbie and Ken. The two actors didn’t know each other, but during the two days of filming, they fell in love and are now married with two children. What brings Aqua together, let no man tear apart. Success came, the tours, the money… and the inevitable legal battle with Mattel.

The truth is, the toy company didn’t have much to say in the end. In fact, at some point, they simply complained that the song wasn’t called ‘Party Girl.’ Aqua won after five years of legal battles and was able to perform the song in all their concerts. Literally, in every single one. They were even invited to Mexico once just to perform that song and then leave! Nowadays, they are preparing their fourth album, despite losing a member due to sheer exhaustion. They are on an international tour, and of course, they still don’t hate ‘Barbie Girl.’ How could they?

I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world…

When Music Met Marvel: The Ill-Fated Comic Book Heroine Who Couldn’t Hit the Right Note

The one chosen by the LMR record company was Jackie Tavares. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, spoiler: its for a reason.

At the beginning of the 80’s Marvel had it very clear: to succeed in a competitive world that had more and more leisure offerings away from the comics, something more was needed, an extra that would make the fictional characters tangible in the real world. That’s why, when Dazzler debuted in issue 130 of ‘Uncanny X-Men’, everything seemed to change. The mutant was also a music star. So much so that she was not created per se by the comic book company, but by a record label called Casablanca Records, where she was known as Disco Queen. This is just the beginning of the madness.

You are the dancing queen

As soon as she was born, Dazzler was born with a record deal and a movie under her arm, which was to star the star of the moment, Bo Derek. In fact, the character went from being African-American to resembling the actress. In the end Casablanca Records went bankrupt and there was no movie, no album, and no TV special that was supposed to introduce the character and in which Robin Williams, Donna Summer or Cher would appear as Marvel characters.

But if there’s one thing Marvel doesn’t do, it’s give up. It’s been ten years and they’re already ready to invest in another typical early ’90s multimedia adventure. This time they would do it differently: they would take a budding artist and turn her into a comic book character, instead of the other way around. The one chosen by the LMR label was Jackie Tavares. If her name doesn’t ring a bell, spoiler: it’s for a reason.

Tavares met Stan Lee, the project flourished and became, overnight, Nightcat: heroine by night, singer by day. In fact, the future star herself went to the Marvel offices to have several photos taken dressed as the superheroine in question and took the opportunity to see the first designs by Jim Lee (who would end up not drawing the comic). Her only comic book, of 52 pages, came out at the same time as the album and was promoted in different television programs. The plan was perfect, not even if it was just for the sake of pure mash-up.

Except it wasn’t. Nobody asked for more adventures of Nightcat (described as “Wolverine on a bicycle”), the album was not successful and a crossover that had been scheduled with Spiderman ended up in the trash. And that the comic ended with the phrase “The cat has only begun to prowl”. The album, meanwhile, which had songs like ‘#1 House Rule’, ‘Your love is all I need’ or ‘Say you’ll be mine’ was considered a kind of Mili Vanili. Since then, Nightcat has had a couple of background appearances and Stan Lee shut his mouth about her until the end of her days.

If there are failures that you can smell a mile away. Just tell that to DC with ‘Flash‘, right?

Half an Hour that Changed Pop History: Exploring the Genesis of ‘Wannabe’ and its Iconic Status

It was pure young rage, girl power, a beat that captivated everyone to this day. But of course, the song was not born out of nowhere. Well, a little yes, actually. You will see.

In the early 90’s boy bands that combined melodic tones were the stars of the music scene, with Take That leading the way. But in the heads of some London managers, the next step was clear: casting girls who could sing and dance and putting them together in a similar band called… Touch. When Mel B, Mel C, Geri, Victoria and Emma got together for the first time (after the expulsion of another girl who apparently didn’t fit in too well), they knew that Touch was not going to last long.

Do you wanna be my lover?

They didn’t want to make rhythm’n’blues in the Eternal style, but pop. Or punk, depending on how you look at it: ‘Wannabe’ was like nothing else that had come out up to that point. It was pure young rage, girl power, a rhythm that captivated everyone to this day. But of course, the song didn’t come out of nowhere. Well, it kind of did, actually. You’ll see.

Rob and Chris Herbert, the directors of Heart Management, who placed the famous classified ad in the newspaper that ended in the founding of Spice (the name they changed to after Touch), had an idea of what to do with the girls: it was their secret plan to change everything. They’d been practicing the same four songs every day for a year, and when it came time to impress the best lyricists and songwriters in the UK, boy, did they do it. In style.

So much so, that the Spice soon realized that Heart Management had not prepared contracts for them. And if there are no contracts, there are no albums and no songs. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves: ‘Wannabe’ was one of the songs that were composed during three days of tests with different rhythms, lyrics and intentions. There was only a piano, a drum kit and the girls’ desire to sing. And to talk. It was Richard Stannard who, among the noise, was able to capture the phrase “If you wanna be my lover, you’ve gotta get with my friends“. The magic was born.

Zigazig-ah

Taking parts the band had written before, adding other parts and setting it to the right music, ‘Wannabe’ was complete in half an hour, in a frenzied burst of creativity. Inside were inside jokes, words that meant nothing (“zigazig-ah”) and they automatically recorded it the next day, making it their first song ever sung in a studio. Twelve months of working together had finally paid off.

But not just musically: mentally too. The Spice had only recorded two songs (this and the Christmas classic ‘2 become 1’), but they knew they were good. So much so that, with no contracts in between, they decided to walk into Heart Management’s office at night, steal their songs, take everything that belonged to them and leave with a fresh breeze. From now on, they would represent themselves, and their offices would be Geri’s car, a Fiat Uno.

Wannabe’ was recorded in February 1995. In July they had already signed for Virgin, one of the giants of the industry: five albums for a million pounds. Almost nothing. They only asked for a change, and they accepted without any problems. They would no longer be Spice, but Spice Girls. And it had to work, because a million was – and is – an absolute mint. For their first TV appearance they pretended to be in a radio studio, which was paradoxical… because there was no one on the radio to play them.

Almost Catalan

But after playing it on TV, they started to program it all the time. And in February 1996, Virgin made the strangest decision possible: to change the single to ‘Love thing’, an RnB song that they thought would appeal better to mid-90s audiences. The girls were adamant: “It has to be ‘Wannabe'”. And it was. The music video, which was about to be shot in Barcelona until the last minute, said it all about the girls. They were bold, they were modern, they were authentic. And Virgin didn’t like them at all.

So much so, that they even thought of shooting another music video exclusively for America where they would be seen glamorous, like the girl bands of that time. But they were very clear: neither Mel B’s hard nipples nor the fact that they were wearing cheap clothes was going to stop them. This was their spirit, and that’s how it had to look. Soon, the video and the song would be number 1 all over the world.

In fact, it became the most successful debut single of all time, sold 6,500,000 units and went to number 1 in almost every country (except some like Taiwan or Iceland). It was only the precedent of ‘Spice’, their first album, which sold 31,000,000 records worldwide and became an icon at a time when the Spice Girls were absolutely everything. The time of separation and reunion would come. Not bad for a group that started in a newspaper trying their luck, right?

Shakira can’t get enough: in ‘Acróstico’ she throws more jabs at Piqué while showing her love for her kids

At the piano, the singer has dedicated ‘Acrostico’, a song to her two children (the initial letters of the stanzas read MILAN and SASHA) in which the two of them do the choirs

It is usually difficult to determine which side the children will take in a divorce. There are so many factors to consider, and it can be traumatic for them. However, in the case of Piqué and Shakira, it’s a different story. When we saw Milan and Sasha singing at the top of their lungs in the audience on Jimmy Fallon’s show with the lyrics “A ti te quedé grande y por eso estás con una igualita que tú” (You were too much for me, that’s why you’re with someone just like you), we already suspected they wouldn’t be on the footballer’s side. But now, there is a new twist.

Spotify DOWNLOAD

Acróstico

At the piano, the singer has dedicated ‘Acróstico’, a song to her two sons (the initial letters of the verses spell out MILAN and SASHA), in which they both provide backing vocals. And for those who love gossip, there are nods and jabs at Piqué. Yes, the children’s involvement is lovely, but we’re here for the juicy details. “We broke just one plate, not the whole tableware”, “You taught me that love is not a scam, and that when it’s real, it doesn’t end”… Piqué’s ears must be burning right now. Sorry for the pun, it just happened.

According to Shakira’s Instagram, Milan has already written songs that made her cry, and Sasha practices the piano as much as he can. It seems like they have put football aside to focus more on the musical side. “There’s nothing that makes me feel more fulfilled than being their mom,” she said, embracing love instead of hatred.

If you’re curious to hear them exactly, Sasha sings at 1:08 and Milan at 2:26, both singing the same part: “Sirve de anestesia al dolor, hace que me sienta mejor, para lo que necesites estoy, viniste a completar lo que soy” (Loving you serves as anesthesia for the pain, it makes me feel better, I’m here for whatever you need, you came to complete what I am.) It’s worth mentioning that the oldest is already 10 years old and the youngest is 8, and the entire video is dedicated to them, their move, and their change of life.

If this means we can see Shakira happier, without the usual drama and jabs, let’s embrace this new chapter. Let it splash whoever it splashes.

San Isidro Music Clash: How to Never Miss a Free Concert Battle Between MadCool and Primavera Sound!

Primavera Sound and MadCool will face each other in some way during two days and eight concerts where they have tried to show off their chests and make it clear that both are at their best.

This San Isidro, free concerts flood Madrid. And, in particular, Matadero. It is not for less: two of the great events for fans of live music, Primavera Sound and MadCool, will measure somehow faces for two days and eight concerts where they have tried to get chest and make it clear that both are at their best. Let’s analyze what they will bring one and the other and put the music at maximum volume: The chotis is long gone!

Madcool

Although the festival will be held from July 6 to 8 in Madrid, within the district of Villaverde, on May 13 they will give the symbolic kick-off with free concerts in Matadero, next to the Clock Tower, where they fit up to 8000 people. The pity is that it coincides with Eurovision, so it may not be a success.

Nevertheless, the lineup they have put together is very interesting: at 19:30, L.A.S DJs, who, as their name suggests, are two masked DJs playing house and electronic music for those who feel like it at siesta time. At 20:20 Girli takes the stage: she’s a 25-year-old British rapper very much in tune with today’s lifestyle. Pansexual, feminist, women’s and LGBT rights advocate, and with a catchy bubblegum beat.

Right after, at 21:45, it’s time for Sports Team, a British alternative rock band capable of making anyone dance with a rebelliousness that sometimes feels absent in today’s music. Finally, at 23:15, Cupido will appear, one of the most booming bands of today with great songs like ‘Autoestima’, ‘No sabes mentir’ or ‘La pared’. A mixture of tontipop, indie and trap that results in songs that you will not be able to get out of your head. My mom and dad made my face too good…

If you missed them, don’t worry: Girli and Cupid will repeat on the main stage of Madcool in July, along with groups and singers like Franz Ferdinand, Robbie Williams, Lil Nas X, Offspring, Sigur Rós, Liam Gallagher, Primal Scream or Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Almost nothing.

Primavera Sound

For its part, the other contender in this particular combat in which only music wins is the Primavera Sound, which will have three locations: in Barcelona from June 1 to 3, in Arganda del Rey from 8 to 10 (the classic) and in Oporto from 7 to 10. Its concerts will also be in Matadero, exactly in the same place as Madcool, but on May 15. So, it won’t even be necessary to unscrew the stage.

In this case, at 18:00 will come from Murcia the great Amore, halfway between pop and electronic music. If you have never given it a listen, try ‘La arena’ or ‘Disneyland Paris’, which are very curious. At 19:00 it will be time for one of the most fun girl groups of the moment, Cariño, who you will know for ‘Si quieres’, ‘Canción de pop de amor’ or ‘Tamagotchi’. Fast and simple rhythms bordering on bubblegum-pop that you will fall in love with from the first listen.

To show the variety of styles of the festival, at 8:15 comes the urban music of Soto Asa, between his facet of producer and singer, with his mix of rap, reggaeton and gamer aesthetics. Finally, at 21:30, the party will end with DJ Coco, who mixes hits of yesterday and today in a literal way. Attending a DJ Coco session is as fun as it is hopeful and will give you the perfect mood to go home… Or keep the party going a little longer.

Primavera Sound will repeat the posters of Madrid and Barcelona (watch out for the logistics) with names like Blur, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Skrillex, Bad Religion, Rosalía, Bad Gyal and Maneskin. Oh, and if you like other types of music, there will also be Los Ganglios, who will get you out of any trouble.

So who wins, Madcool or Primavera Sound? As always, it’s a matter of taste. The only thing that is clear is that everyone who goes to see them wins, whether they know the bands from before or just want to enjoy a fun afternoon escaping a little of the din of San Isidro. Let the musicón begin!

Your Ultimate Guide to Eurovision 2023: 7 Things You Can’t Afford to Miss

Eurovision is more enjoyable if you know what you’re talking about, right? We tell you seven things not to miss in a unique edition.

The Eurovision Song Contest is coming, that day when it doesn’t matter what happens outside your living room, the pizza, the friends scoring, the screaming and the disappointments. Whether you are one of those who believe that Blanca Paloma is going to be the first or those who have not heard a single song and just want to watch the gala to make memes on Twitter, this guide is for you. Because Eurovision is more enjoyable if you know what you’re talking about, right? We tell you seven things not to miss in a unique edition.

Where it is held

We all know that last year, even though Chanel came very close, Ukraine won, with the hope that this year they could host the song festival. For whatever reason, Kiev is still not a safe place, so the honor has been passed to the country that came second, that is, United Kingdom with ‘Space man’, by Sam Ryder.

It is true that in Spain we fought it (because nothing else, but for a good party we are even capable of winning this) and Valencia offered to be the place where the edition would be held if Chanel had been second, but finally it will be in the Liverpool Arena, which will have a scenography that, apparently, will launch a message of unity and solidarity through music. Let’s go, the same as every year. We have come here for something else, gentlemen of Liverpool.

Who will win

Let’s get straight to the point, in case you want to give the points and look like the most Eurovisionist of your friends. There are three countries at the top: first Finland, with ‘Cha Cha Cha’ by Käärijä, the singer who decided that he was not going to put a vowel without umlaut. The song is absolutely incredible, the staging cathartic, a marvel.

Then there is Sweden, which has once again bet on Loreen despite her bitter controversy with Eva Soriano, who after winning in 2017 has returned with ‘Tattoo’, a song in English that has lost a little in the staging but is still a great song. Close behind them are Slovenia and France, yes, but the top 3 of great possible winners is closed by Españita. Eaea.

Blanca Paloma

This year has happened a bit like last year at the Benidorm Fest: the most casual audience supported one song (‘Ay mamá’ in 2022, ‘Nochentera’ in 2023) and in the end won another very different one that, over time, has become a Eurovision standard. ‘Eaea’, by Blanca Paloma, mixes a scandalous performance with a song that is out of the ordinary on that European stage. And maybe that’s where it will make its way.

“Oh, come to me, my child, sleep by my side, in my chest there is shelter, little coat for your sorrows”. Okay, you may not be dancing to it this summer in Ibiza, but the staging added to the rise of Rosalía around the world may give us a more or less unexpected victory. Hey, hope is the last thing you lose, right?

How to vote

Honestly, if at this point we have to explain how to vote, it is possible that this guide to be an expert becomes the guide to not screw up in front of the fans. There are two parts, and they have managed to give emotion to both of them so that they are different and at the same time complementary. First, after listening to all the songs, you can call in to choose your favorite (from outside your country, of course).

After watching the repetition of all the songs seven times, it will be time to connect one by one with all the countries so that the jurors can give their votes by scoring from 1 to 12 points their favorite songs. And then, the votes given by telephone can give up to a maximum of 468 points to a single title (something that has never happened before), adding all those obtained by each country. The one who comes first will be the winner and the one who will have the task of organizing the gala in 2024.

Of course, in the semifinals the countries have passed only with the votes of the public, so you never know when this radical change will also be implemented in the ceremony itself.

Where to watch the gala

Surely at the moment of truth you are wondering on which channel you will be able to watch the gala: it will be on La 1 of TVE at 21:00, and it is not that their competition is going to be huge. Antena 3 will counterattack with the horrible ‘Jack Reacher: Never look back’ and Telecinco will make a special of ‘Got talent’ with their best performances. That is to say, no resistance.

In addition, Eurovision will be screened in cinemas, you can watch it in special trains, at events throughout the country, bars, nightclubs … And if you do not have a TV near you, it will also be on YouTube live and on the RTVE website. So, the excuse that you didn’t know when it was not valid: this is the Barça-Madrid of popular music.

How many songs will be played

If you are one of those who have to watch Eurovision by obligation and do not know how many songs you will have to endure until you can change the channel or put on ‘Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’, the answer is 26. Five of the “Big Five” that we are nominated each year (Spain, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and France), last year’s winner (Ukraine) and the twenty countries that pass in the heats of May 9 and 11. Better sit back and try to enjoy it, it’s going to be a long one.

Who will present

This year there is a little surprise in the presentation of the gala, because Graham Norton will be back on stage. He is a Eurovision classic for the British who has been commentating the gala since 2009 and is held in such high esteem that he even appeared in the parody that Netflix made with Will Ferrell (full, by the way, of great songs). Joining him will be Alesha Dixon, Hannah Waddingham and Julia Sanina.

That’s it, you know it all. Now you just need to choose the best snack, choose the scores wisely, win in the betting pool and, above all, sing, enjoy and endure the desire for another 365 days until Eurovision returns.

The Rise of Pablo Alborán: From a Young Composer to a Grammy-Nominated Artist

How come you still don’t know who it is? But how is it possible? We tell you so that you never end up looking more like a melon than a music lover.

“No me alcanza el tiempo cuando estoy contigo, faltan tantos momentos, sobran los motivos”: the lyrics of ‘Amor de Barrio’ may not be Pablo Alborán’s best, but it’s also true that he wrote it when he was only twelve years old, at an age when the rest of us were still playing with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and, at most, going to guitar lessons to learn how to play ‘Allá en el Rancho Grande’. Since then, he has become one of the top artists in the Spanish music scene. What, you still don’t know who he is? How is that possible? We’ll tell you all about him so you don’t end up looking like a melon instead of a music lover again.

Spotify DOWNLOAD

Who is Pablo Alborán?

Pablo Moreno de Alborán Ferrándiz (who shortened his stage name for obvious reasons) was born on May 31, 1989 in Málaga. And of course, nobody expected that the boy who was baptized as “El blanco moreno” in his family while singing flamenco would end up nominated for 24 Latin Grammys and winning a Goya with his records. In general, it is something very concrete and strange to expect from a child.

And that started on MySpace (remember?) without any pretensions, but as soon as he began to show his songs on YouTube he rose to fame: ‘Solamente tú’ got 180 million views. It was a foregone conclusion, and never better said: on February 1, 2011 he released ‘Pablo Alborán’, his first album, and it became an immediate bestseller. It was followed by ‘Tanto’ (2012), ‘Terral’ (2014), the live ‘Tour Terral’ (2016), ‘Prometo’ (2017), ‘Vértigo’ (2020) and ‘La cuarta hoja’ (2022). Come on, he is anything but still.

Can I listen to Pablo Alborán live?

Right now, the singer is fully involved in the tour to promote ‘La cuarta hoja’, so most likely you will have him around very soon until it ends on November 22 at the WiZink in Madrid. For example, he will pass through Bilbao, Barcelona, Valladolid, A Coruña, Cuenca, Puigcerdá or Oporto, playing at the Música en Grande, SOM, Cap Roig and Concert Music festivals. It’s rare that he doesn’t show up in your living room playing a couple of songs for you.

What are the best songs by Pablo Alborán?

It’s very subjective, but if you’ve never listened to him before, we’ll give you some advice. Solamente tú’ is already a classic, but don’t forget to accompany it with great songs from his different periods, such as ‘Miedo’ and his love indisposition with which we can all feel represented; ‘Éxtasis’, with which it is impossible not to throw yourself into passion; ‘Quién’, together with Alejandro Sanz himself; or the very sincere ‘Tu refugio’.

Browse through his albums, fall in love, understand, listen again. You will always find something new among the notes, verses and shots to love of one of the most international Spanish artists that tonight, in addition, you can see in ‘El Hormiguero’ talking about everything that has led him to this moment. As long as he doesn’t dedicate a song to Trancas y Barrancas we’ll be fine.

What’s in store for Pablo Alborán?

At just 32 years old, Alborán has a golden future ahead of him. At the rate he is going, he will already be preparing a new album for 2024 and will continue with a tour that is characterized by having bigger stages and being much more spectacular than in the past. But he’s also studying to be an actor, so it wouldn’t be so strange if he ends up starring in a Netflix series soon.

We would say that he fits as a teacher in ‘Elite’, but seen what we’ve seen, maybe he would even fit as a student. “Music has a lot of cinema and cinema has a lot of music”, he said in his last visit to ‘El hormiguero’ before a Pablo Motos trying to react to a phrase between philosophical, Rajoyesque and nick of Messenger. We will be waiting.

The Rise and Reign of The Machinery Smurfs: A Global Phenomenon

What is 'The Machinery Smurfs'? Where did it come from and how far were they able to go? Stay tuned, because this story is not expected.

Whether we like it or not, we cannot control our childhood. We can make anyone who will listen to us believe that when we were kids ‘The Godfather‘ was the best thing that ever happened to us instead of ‘Yuppie Worlds’ or that in our car we listened to Oasis instead of The Makinero Smurfs. Ah, yes. That album that in 1995 appeared in Spain from absolutely nowhere, three years after the death of Peyo and that made a whole generation dance. But, what is ‘Los Pitufos Makineros’, where did it come from and how far were they able to go? Stay tuned, because you are not expecting this story.

Techno is cool

First, an introduction to The Smurfs: in 1958, Peyo had achieved success with the comic and epic adventures of a couple based on a brave man and his disastrous companion. Johan and Pirluit starred in 13 titles created by the author (and four others created after his death by other authors) and, unjustly, he is remembered for having seen the birth, in his ninth long story, of the Smurfs.

‘The Flute of Six Smurfs’ was, without knowing it, the beginning of the rest of Peyo’s life: after bringing them out as secondary characters in a couple more adventures of Johan and Pirluit, the village took on a life of its own and in 1959 ‘The Black Smurfs‘ and its mythical “¡Ñac!” had an unusual success that, after a good handful of comics, exploded with the American cartoon series that lasted from 1981 to 1990 for 258 episodes (quite decaffeinated for the most part, by the way).

It was around this time, in 1978, when The Smurfs made their first appearance in the world of music thanks to Father Abraham, the stage name of the Dutchman Petrus Antonius Laurentius “Pierre” Kartner (who died, by the way, last year), who made a song for the movie based on ‘The Six Smurfs’ Flute’. The single sold more than 400,000 units (although initially the lack of confidence made them print only 1000), and the subsequent album half a million. In Spain it arrived singing in our language in an album titled ‘El padre Abraham y sus pitufos’, with this song as an absolutely impossible advance.

Smurf makina

But it all ends: the Smurfs’ fame faded little by little as the TV series was increasingly considered a kitsch product and by the mid 90’s they were considered a rather finished franchise. But there was still one last attempt before spending a decade hibernating, and the key was not in Spain but, once again… in Holland.

EMI, owner of the franchise, no longer knew what to do with The Smurfs, and asked the Cat Music production team to do something, please, with the characters and some modern “Smurf” songs. At the beginning of 1995, a parody of 2Unlimited’s ‘No limit’ was the number one in Holland and opened the way: on April 6th of the same year ‘Tekkno ist cool’ was released in Belgium and Germany, with smurfed versions of Jam & Spoon or Maxx. The success was such that in September ‘Megaparty’ appeared, another album by Los Pitufos. In Holland, meanwhile, Irene Moors’ CDs with the Smurfs, such as ‘Ga je mee naar Smurfenland’ went double platinum. It was the beginning of a journey that would take them to cover ‘La macarena’ or the Spice Girls throughout Europe, where 8 million albums were sold between 1995 and 1998. We repeat: Eight. Millions.

And meanwhile, in Spain, what was happening in 1995? With the bakalao route in decline and dance and techno music opening up to all ages, it was only a matter of time before ‘Los pitufos makineros’ came to us, which had a different cover illustration than the rest of the European versions and in which songs like ‘Scatman’s world’ (‘Somos los pitufos’), ‘El tecno es guay’ (American Pie) or, of course, the ‘No limit’ that triumphed in its Dutch version, here as ‘Cumpleaños feliz’, were versioned. If you’re over thirty, it still resonates in your nightmares (“It’s your birthday, it’s your birthday, it’s your birthday”). This was just the beginning: success was assured.

Smurfs Mix

It must be taken into account that in the 90’s summer remix albums were an art form in Spain. Ever since ‘Max Mix’ opened the way in 1985, the different titles were making their way in the (then) turbulent Spanish market. Bolero Mix’, ‘Máquina total’ (which in 1995 sold more than in any other year with its seventh part), ‘Rumba total’ or ‘Ibiza Mix’ were what was played in every self-respecting summer beach bar. Los Pitufos makineros’ served not only as a parody but also as a children’s version for the whole family.

In 1996, Los Pitufos Makineros released ‘¡Vámonos a Ibiza!‘ with versions of ‘El tiburón’ (‘El campeón’), ‘Staying alive’ (‘¡Piérdete ya!’) or ‘Memories’ (‘El cole acabó’) as well as their own songs like ‘Pitufolimpiadas’ or ‘Futbolmanía’. The albums immediately abandoned the “makineros” with Spain and entered another more pop moment. Thus came out ‘Los Pitufos ¡van a tope!’ (1996) and ‘¡Viva Pitufos! Los Pitufos en directo’ (1997). This album was half a compilation of the three previous ones, but with new songs like the Smurf version of ‘Acompáñame’, the song from ‘Sorpresa, sorpresa, sorpresa’. The 90’s were definitely a thing.

From then on they tried to monetize as they could: ‘¡¡A bailar Pitufos!!!’ (1997), ‘Los Pitufos musicales’ (1997), ‘¡¡Corazón Pitufo! ‘ (1998) that versioned ‘Barbie Girl’ in ‘La pitufina’ or ‘Desátame’ in ‘Pitúfame’ or ‘Los Pitufos 2000’ (1999), with versions of ‘Mambo No 5’ (‘Vivo Pitufando’) or ‘Baby one more time’ (‘Juega otra vez pitufo’). The arrival of the 2000s did not remove the annual album from the team: ‘Los pitufos.com’ (2000) opened the range to explicit songs like ‘Sex bomb’ (‘Pitufos on line’) or ‘The bad touch’ (‘Todo al revés’). This was the last one edited by Arcade, which gave way to Divucsa and versions of exclusively Spanish songs, abandoning the international practices.

The albums continued until 2006: ‘Fiesta Pitufa’, the double ‘Festival Pitufo’, ‘Los Pitufos te desean un cumpleaños feliz’, ‘Los Pitufos ¡no paran! ‘ (with a bonus DVD containing the episode ‘Smurf buccaneer’ from the TV series), ‘Mola pitufar’ (with a CD of Christmas carols and karaoke included), ‘Mola pitufar’ and, finally, ‘Pitufando éxitos’, which included seven interactive games on a CD-ROM and which already showed a new musical style in songs such as ‘Me mola el rumbatón’, which parodied ‘Pa mi guerrera’.

Fourteen albums in eleven years and impossible versions of ‘Aserejé’, ‘Zapatillas’ or ‘I want it that way’ made Los Pitufos Makineros (and, later, Los Pitufos) one of those nostalgic milestones that are a bit embarrassing to remember. The good part is that we were not alone: in Hungary albums were released until 2011 and in Finland more than 19 different ones were sold. In the Czech Republic, in fact, their equivalent to our Makinero Smurfs was the best-selling album between 1994 and 2006.

There is only one international consolation left in the face of musical shame: no country could afford to cover ‘Wonderwall’: Oasis very explicitly requested that ‘Wondersmurf’ should not appear on any of these albums. Smurf it, Gallaghers!
