How to make your own costume for Halloween or cosplay

Making your own Halloween costume (or a costume for someone else) earns an indescribable sense of satisfaction. Especially when October 31 comes around and you see the assorted plebs with store-bought jammies!

Heh. Casuals.

The fact is: Halloween is a yearly opportunity for wannabe costume makers to give it a good ‘ol try, and a chance for veteran designers to impress their friends with wonderful creations! This guide offers suggestions for newbies and some pro tips to boot.

So, welcome to the party! Let’s chat about…

How to make your own Halloween costume

Planning the Costume

“A problem well-stated is half-solved” – Charles Kettering.

Figuring out what costume you’d like to make and how to do it is certainly half the battle.

Step 1: what is your costume?

Hopefully, you came to this article with an idea in mind. But if you didn’t…

There are some basic questions everyone should ask themselves: what characters do you like? What clothes/accessories/props do you have around the house? Do any of your friends want to make a group costume? Do you want to try a particular form of costume making? Finally, do you look similar to any of the characters mentioned?

(Looking like a character is NEVER required, but zoiks! If you bear a particularly strong resemblance to Shaggy and like his character, why not?)

Keep a log of character ideas and narrow down the list by asking a few more questions: how long will each costume take? How long do you have? What is your estimate of the cost? Which one excites you the most? Most importantly, which of them allow you to use the restroom easily?

Hopefully, these questions vastly narrow down the playing field so you can choose the perfect costume!

Step 2: How are you going to make it?

There are a couple of common ways we’re going to discuss. However, you should take a good look at your costume now and start deciding: which parts of this outfit would be best attained by…

  • Gathering items from your house or friends or family
  • Shopping
  • Sewing
  • Foam work
  • Electroluminescent lights
  • Crafty business

Sometimes, costumes require many of these skills! Take, for example, a knight. The process may involve wearing your own shoes, buying a prop sword, sewing a tunic, designing fitted foam armor, or crafting a sword with woodworking expertise. Who knows! Because…

When it comes down to it, the process depends on how you want to make this thing and how you want the costume to look. Admittedly, a purchased product will sometimes be faster, cheaper, and better looking! Other times, you can save money and design a fabulous accessory that makes you feel like a costume boss.

Just remember: you don’t have to set your plan in stone yet. You can take each piece as it comes.

Hunting and Gathering

Never be discouraged from using what you already have.

Have an old tuxedo that could work for your cel-shaded Archer cosplay? No problem there! Have the crimson pants, black shoes, and green shirt for a Shaggy cosplay? Done! Do you have a Master Chief helmet lying around? That’s one step you don’t have to worry about!

Archer cosplay at NYCC from pics

Of course, if you don’t have the particular clothing item yourself you can always ask friends and family for something to borrow or keep (if you’re cel-shading your Grandpa’s coat, he probably won’t want it back).

NOTE: this step and the next are best for clothing items that were popular during the 20th and 21st century, things that are often still around. If you can’t buy or borrow, you may want to build. BBB!

Thrift Shop

Thrift Shop

Okay, we admit this is a stretch, since shopping isn’t exactly “making” your own costume…but hear us out! We give a free pass for you to purchase a costume and call it self-made if your costume requires normal clothing (this pass doesn’t apply if it violates the rules of a costume contest).

Look at Archer, Shaggy, the Addams Family, a mad scientist, a Mafia group, Walter White. All these outfits require components that will likely be easier, cheaper, and less time consuming to purchase. Why reinvent the dress when Goodwill may have something perfect?

Still, if you’re dead-set on learning to tailor your own coat or can’t find what you need…

Sewing

Sewing

Some days you just can’t find the perfect Jedi cloak.

When that day comes, or you’ve simply decided to become a creative badass, it’s time to take up the pedal and become a sewing legend.

This requires, first and foremost, access to a working sewing machine. Weird side note: our local library lends them out. Does yours?

Almost every project under the sun goes through these steps: planning, material gathering, pre-prep, and execution. Have a good time with it!

1. Plan how you want to create your article of clothing. For some costumes, this may require looking at your character and doing some mental math. For others, it may require purchasing a clothing pattern, helpful design kits available at any sewing store!

2. Gather the materials. You’ll require at least two things: the fabric itself and the thread, which should usually match the fabric color. If your sewing machine needs new needles or bobbins, those can be helpful as well. We recommend trying Joann, but there are plenty of other sellers!

While you’re at the store, find fabric that matches the color and material you’re looking for. Take comfort into consideration! If the material will be close-fitted, wearing coarse fabric may be itchy. If it’s warm outside, using faux leather can be incredibly hot. Think ahead!

If you’re new to this process, please note: you purchase fabric by taking the full wrap to your store’s cutting counter (usually in the middle) and request a certain number of yards (fractions are acceptable). After your fabric is cut, you’ll take your snip to the front and purchase it afterward.

Also: we recommend buying a little more than you think you’ll need to save an unwanted trip back to the store.

3. Pre-prep. First things first, learn how to sew by hand and/or operate your sewing machine (yeah, that’s a whole different lesson). You should know how to prepare your thread and bobbin, then sew fabric on the platform.

Remember, it’s a journey! We dealt with terrible thread issues until reading our manual and discovering that a SINGLE KNOB controlled how tight the thread is pulled, which was leading to thread snafus. That simple detail changed everything, and got us back on track. Stay wary!

4. Cut your fabric. If you’re using a pattern, go by the design. If you’re playing it by ear by holding your clothes to the fabric or laying down on it or placing your hand over the glove material…best of luck. Just make sure to leave extra space! You can always sew the fabric so it’s tighter. Loosening up areas requires a large amount of painful de-threading.

5. Sewing! You have the pieces of clothing, you know how to sew, you’re ready to go!

Just remember: as you’re completing the pieces, make sure to try them on everyone once in a while to make sure everything’s coming together. When it’s all attached, you may want to fit it better in certain places.

Tip: if you fold the edge and sew it, your costume will look crisper and be far more durable. If you fold it twice, the unraveling edge is safely tucked inside the fold, never to be a problem again! Mwahaha!

Foam

Honestly, foam armor is still a dream of ours. A “someday” kinda deal.

In the meantime, if you’re making a costume that requires some foam work, there are some other great tutorials online! We watch this video occasionally and dream about the creations that could be…

Electroluminescent Lights

Strings of neon are a great way to make any costume pop out on a dark Halloween night, and they’re even better when they actually make sense for your costume! But hey, why can’t Little Red Riding Hood look like she’s going to a rave?

Fortunately, we already made a nifty guide for these lights:

Getting Crafty

When all’s said and done, there are a ton of different ways to make any costume, accessory, and prop. Armor alone could be made from foam, hot gluing popsicle sticks together, or blacksmithing a legit metal cuirass. For a costume sword, make a wood replica or borrow from THAT friend!

You know which of your friends has the sword.

The point is, when you’ve finished finding, buying, borrowing, sewing, and lighting your costume, there are almost bound to be things that are difficult to find or create through these means. Perhaps it’s a Caesar‘s crown of olives, Palutena‘s staff, or Loki‘s helmet.

When these type of things pop up, get crafty: snap a branch off and call yourself Ceaser. Use hair gel and a mop to form Palutena’s staff (no idea if that’d actually work, but that’s the point). Paper mache yourself into the persona of Marvel’s best on-again, off-again antagonist!

You can do it.

Final Step: Rock It

I dressed as Amazon Prime and won my office Halloween costume contest today! from halloween

Some people put on a costume, others WEAR a costume.

If you go as Jake, from State Farm, you’d better be ready to confusedly say: “Ahhh…khakis?” If you’re a Borderlands psycho, you should be ready to maniacally scream, “I’m already dead tomorrow!” And finally, if you’re Fat Amy from Pitch Perfect, you’d better gosh darn be ready to say, “I’ve wrestled crocodiles and dingos simultaneously”!

Among any other catchhprases of your character.

The point is, the single most important part of costume is your personality and what you bring to the table. If you want to truly “make” your character for Halloween, have yourself a grand old time playing the part.

We hope you have a happy Halloween!

Cosplay!!!

Cosplay is cool!

Some people can’t stand the idea of wearing a strange getup at Halloween. Others will gladly put hundreds of dollars into the designing, sewing, and machining true-to-life costumes based on their favorite characters.

For those who think dressing up in outlandish costumes and playing the personality and mannerism of the source character seems totally weird, that’s alright. You don’t have to fully embrace the hype (although the phrase “don’t knock it until you try it” comes to mind…), but we ask you to recognize how impressive these outfits are!

Now, before we go on, we should note: E3 cosplay works a little differently. Comic-Con, Anime Expo, MomoCon, and many of the other large cons have a huge emphasis on costumes, but the Electronic Entertainment Expo puts more emphasis on games, which many of the cosplays you’re about to see are promotional. Just wanted to let you know up front.

Now! Here are the…

Cosplayers of E3 2019

These… These People

These PeopleWho are these people? No idea. Admittedly, we forgot to ask. To the best of our knowledge, they were a well-dressed promotional troupe, seeing as their group looks like the unlikely combination of a pompadour-wearing Daft Punk member, the ninja from Furi, and an airplane director who rushed to work after a rave.

If we’re joking about your fandom, please let us know, and sorry in advance! Kind of. The point is, these folks look great!

Yokai Kitchen

these other people

Yokai: Japanese monster spirits.

In FriendTimes Inc. new game, Yokai Kitchen, you can help them serve food! To promote their game, these two well-dressed cosplayers were moseying around the convention center.

Devil May Cry 5 and Something Else

Dante and FriendsWe just happened to catch Dante from Devil May Cry 5 and these two characters from…something. When directed to their booth, we discovered there were very few English translations to be found, but we grabbed a snapshot of their sign! Check it out (and please help translate in the comments if possible):

What is this name?

All the Fortnite!

Cuddle TeamCuddle Team Leader signing in!

The Fortnite booth had a ton of cosplayers making the rounds, doing the dances, and generally being fantastic portrayals of the various playable characters. For example…

BushWait…never mind, that’s just a bush.

We did, however, get the chance to dance with a Frozen Red Knight! They had some pretty slick moves, but we were able to keep up pretty well with some triple-time Hype and lanyard-breaking Orange Justice!

Right? Right…

Yep. Bulletproof performance.

Wario

Wario, baby!Yep, just Wario. Holding a Game and Watch. Because really, do you need anything else?

(So jealous of that ‘stache, dude, A+ cosplay right there.)

Lightmass. No, Linux. Wait, Lady Butterfly! *sigh* She’s from Apex Legends.

Apex LadyYes, folks, it’s Lady Apex!

Honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better costume for Captain Lasky. We were able to grab a business card from this cosplayer, Michelle, you can find her at Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram!

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Link! What gaming expo would be complete without the Hero of Time?

If anyone’s wondering, this version comes from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in which Link dresses up as a Gerudo woman to sneak into a city for women only. You get to ride a sand seal, you take out a camel (the divine beast Naboris), it’s all quite an adventure!

Darksiders: Genesis

DarksidersThere’s the article thumbnail! These impressively dressed folks were promoting the upcoming isometric dungeon crawler, Darksiders: Genesis.

We’ve seen a lot of great costumes for characters we already know, which impressed us because of our familiarity. It’s a rare but welcome occurrence to find outfits you don’t immediately recognize but want to know better. Round of applause for the creators’ effort!

Destroy All Humans

Aliens

Crash course for this game: you’re an alien who lands on Earth and decides to destroy all humans. Consider yourself briefed, soldier.

While these weren’t the most high-effort cosplays out there, we did find the entire crew to be quite interesting as a group together!

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Soldier

We found this soldier walking the South hall promoting the upcoming Tom Clancy release. Trust us: around the Ubisoft booth, there were an army of personnel such as these!

Frankly, it’s always interesting to see military cosplayers when there are security guards around a convention. It takes a moment to realize, “Oh, right, Albion really doesn’t seem like an actual event management firm”. Still, you never know…

Final Fantasy

Knight

A knight of Final Fantasy, reportedly game XIV. Check out those majestic epaulettes, the rich cloak, the finely-crafted sword! Beautiful.

Last but not Least: Final Fantasy XII

TifaAnother staple of gaming conventions: Tifa Lockheart!

Tifa was a fan favorite since the release of OG Final Fantasy 7, and now that the remake has stormed the internet with insanely well-updated graphics, you should expect many more cosplayers dressed as her!

Also, if you forgot which Final Fantasy this is, here’s the one piece of information that really matters: this game has the Buster Sword.

Conclusion

Thanks for looking through! we hope you enjoyed a few of the awesome cosplays of E3 2019. Think you’d like to attend next year’s event? Here’s what you’ll need to know to attend E3.

Top 5 YouTubers for special effects makeup

Want to scare your friends? Check out these great YouTube tutorials for terrifying special effects makeup tips.

Have you ever watched a movie or a TV show and wondered how an actor was able to be transformed into a vicious werewolf, or an alien with green skin covered in dripping space goop? There’s a good chance that a large amount of the transformation was due to CGI, but the rest was done with makeup. If you’ve ever seen the television show “Face Off,” you’ll know that it can take days of work to achieve your desired look. Thankfully, YouTube is the home to a large number of talented special effects makeup artists who put in all of the hard work and edit the videos so that we can see transformations in a lot less time. Check out the list below to see a few of our favorite artists. A warning to the squeamish – some of the videos below include simulated gore.

Top 5 special effects makeup artists on YouTube

1. Glam&Gore

Subscriber count as of today: 3,474,674

Glam&Gore, also known as Mykie, is a self-taught artist. Mykie started her channel in 2014 and it has blown up due to the popularity of series like ones where she makes gory versions of Disney Princesses. What makes Mykie special is, even though she uses high-grade makeup and other expensive tools for some of her videos, she also makes tutorials using drugstore makeup for artists who may be just starting out and can’t blow insane amounts of money on things like prosthetics.

Other content on Glam&Gore includes collaborations with other YouTubers where Mykie tries to transform herself into that YouTuber, and challenges where she lets apps like Tinder pick her makeup. Fun fact: Mykie was 2015’s winner of the NYX Face Awards, an open competition where contestants submit their most creative makeup tutorial video adhering to specific challenge guidelines. Prizes included $25,000 and products from NYX and other sponsors.

2. Freakmo

Subscriber count as of today: 474,019

Freakmo, or Kiana Jones, is an Australian artist best known for her thorough tutorials. Mainly focusing on technique and proper materials, Freakmo covers a wide range of topics appropriate for new or advanced artists. As well as popular Halloween looks like creepy dolls, demons, and zombies, Kiana has a lot of highly detailed injury tutorials to help you with your best severed hand or finger prank. Give your family a heart attack with this infected knee video!

If you want to know more specifics about materials, Freakmo is a good place to start. You can learn the best products to use to make molds, and how to sculpt a mask to make it look extremely realistic.

3. Simple Symphony

If you’re a fan of “Stranger Things,” Simple Symphony has an amazing video for you! Demogorgons, the Mother of Dragons, and other popular characters from video games and television are just the tip of the iceberg. Simple Symphony, or Ophelie, is a French YouTuber who started posting her elaborate tutorials two years ago. She started making videos in her native French, but as her channel grew in popularity some were made in English. Language won’t be a problem, because some of these looks are so incredible that they’ll leave you speechless.

4. Pinkstylist

Subscriber count as of today: 2,533,864

Pinkstylist, or Charlie Short is an artist from the UK who gets inspiration for his tutorials mostly from film and comic book, like his video with a twist on the classic Joker. Charlie is extremely skilled in prosthetics and liquid latex, and we don’t know many people who can use contouring to create dramatic and detailed expressions as he does.

Along with his tutorials, Charlie also does subscription box and viewer mail unboxings, but our favorite part of Pinkstylist has to be his scare videos. Charlie films some of his most horrifying tutorials and then broadcasts on Omegle, a video chat website, to see how many people he can scare and makes hilarious compilation videos from their reactions.

5. Madeyewlook

Subscriber count as of today: 2,657,741

Alexys Fleming is a Chicago based YouTuber and her channel Madeyewlook is probably our favorite on this list. She has a wide array of content consisting of makeup tutorials, special effects instructional videos, bodypainting, makeup challenges, vlogs, and more. If it’s popular at the moment, Alexys has put her own twist on a recreation. Her most viewed video right now is when she made herself into seven different Snapchat filters!

If you’re into video games you’ve definitely found the right channel; a lot of Madeyewlook’s videos are character recreations. Alexys has recently begun live streaming herself creating her looks on Twitch, as well as playing the games that some of her characters are from. We’ve seen a lot of YouTubers moving over to Twitch part-time, and we’re milking the opportunity to see as much of these talented artists as possible.

10 reasons every gamer should attend MAGFest

If you love games, mark your calendar for MAGFest

MAGFest 2019 just ended and we’re still getting used to walking down the street and not seeing Rick and Morty casually chatting up Samus Aran and Kylo Ren. The four day-long event is a celebration of gaming, music, community, panels, and all things nerd. The convention welcomes all walks of life and all types of fans, be they Windows or Mac, PlayStation or Xbox, Call of Duty or Halo. Think of the whole event as one giant post-game lobby where everyone’s excitedly talking about their favorite moments of the match. It’s a bonding experience.

MAGFest friends are forever friends
Everyone deserves to experience MAGFest at least once.

If you’re an avid gamer – or even if you’re just a casual fan of something like Undertale, Mario Kart, “Lord of the Rings,” or “Dr. Who” – that doesn’t necessarily equate being a convention-goer. A quiet evening with Mass Effect is pretty far removed from being caught up in a tide of rabid cosplayers foaming at the mouth at the first note of the Legend of Zelda intro music. Not everyone’s an extrovert, not everyone has money to burn, and not everyone lives close to the National Harbor, where the event takes place. So what is the biggest draw of MAGFest? What’s the logic behind putting down the cash, hopping on the road, and suiting up a Tracer costume? Here’s why

10 reasons why every gamer should attend MAGFest

1. The Arcade

Where did the afternoon go?
Enjoy an endless arcade with unlimited plays

The definition of “gamer?” You play games. From the brainy Hearts of Iron IV strategist to the trigger-happy Gears of War fanboy to the anime-loving Doki Doki Literature Club enthusiast, at MAGFest you all fall under the wide umbrella of “liking video games.” A word to the wise: If you’re the Halo loyalist type who swears all Call of Duty players are a blight on the galaxy, or a “Star Wars” fan who bites his thumb at the Spock cosplayers, here’s a secret: All the fandoms are awesome in their own right. Furthermore, the creators of your favorite show or game are probably heavily inspired by the competition. Did we mention that Stan Lee was a huge Superman fan?

Unlimited plays? UNLIMITED POWER!
Every sound in this room spikes your nostalgia

The arcade at MAGFest is a retro gamer’s dream, with everything Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghosts and Ghouls, Pac-Man, Dance Dance Revolution, and practically half the room filled with old pinball machines. And did we mention practically all the machines are set to unlimited play? You could sink hours of time into Konami’s X-Men arcade game from 1992 and not spend a cent. At MAGFest you don’t have to ‘pay to win’ or ‘pay to lose!’

It’s not just video games either; MAGFest also has mmultipletabletop gaming rooms where you can play Pathfinder, Munchkin, GURPS, Cards Against Humanity, or Magic: The Gathering. Think you’ve got the best deck around? Sit down and see how you stack up to the competition!

board games and card games are making a big comeback
Tired of video games? Grab a board game table!

2. LAN Parties

Anybody up for Halo 2 Lockout?
LAN teammates were swapping in and out all weekend.

It’s not just ye olde arcade games at MAGFest either. They’ve got monitors and controllers set up all around the convention set to plunk you right into a raging Call of Duty LAN party, a speedrun through Crash Bandicoot, Pokemon, or Spyro the Dragon. We shouldn’t even need to mention that there’s a King of the Hill tournament where Super Smash Brothers experts can clash in front of a cheering crowd. The list goes on.

You can get fragged by a guy across the room. Wait for the laughter.
LAN party? Drop in, drop out. Dominate.

You can happily pass the time playing Star Fox at your own pace. Or you can waltz into a group of ranting Halo players, pick up a controller, and make some new friends while you’re pwning the enemy team.

3. Buy and trade games, consoles, and controllers

For the more thrifty or forward-thinking gamers, MAGFest is a great opportunity to pick up some phat loot. If you’ve got an old Xbox 360 or unused Nintendo cartridges sitting around there’s a kiosk set up where you can make some profit by trading them in; something Gamestop probably wouldn’t give you more than a couple bucks for. On the flip side of the coin, there are literal boxes full of used games from which you can can peruse and choose at your leisure. We even saw a retro mouse next to a couple old Xbox memory cards.

Indiana Jones 5 revolves around this artifact
The holy relic of retro gaming

If you’re concerned about spending money at a convention, entering the event arms laden with things to sell and trade for profit is a good compromise!

4. Legendary and hilarious panels

Comic-Con has them, MAGFest has them too. When you’re done pounding away at an arcade machine or spent all the money on merch that you’re willing to part with for the day, you can sit back and relax with some truly memorable panels. Voice-A-Palooza featured a handful of famous voice actors such as Jan Johns, Alexander Brandon, and Wes Johnson all dubbing over famous movie scenes with their various characters. If you’ve ever wondered what Luke Skywalker talking to Rey in The Last Jedi sounds like if Luke was Popeye and Rey was Sean Connery … well scratch that – you probably never wondered that, but it happened anyway:

Some of the panels got absolutely zany (especially after dark!), but some were also insightful, even educational. There was an Advanced Music Theory lecture that capitalized on 8-bit music, a beginner’s guide to playing Magic: The Gathering, and even Yoga for Gamers. For a complete list of all the awesome events going on throughout the weekend, check the schedule right here.

5. Support indie developers and get discounts

This year’s MAGFest had over 80 indie developer companies showcasing their products in varying stages of completion, ranging from playable concept, to beta testers, to soon-to-hit-the-market games. From side-scrolling platformers to JRPGs to shooters, there was something for everyone, and every booth felt professional and polished. It’s a special experience being able to talk to the folks who designed a game as you’re sitting there playing it, enjoying the fruits of their labors and providing constructive feedback while they type away transitioning you between levels or punching in cheat codes.

Get in with a new team, make an awesome game!
Indie games of today are the top sellers of tomorrow

Many of the indie development teams handed out business cards and discount coupons for their games, meaning that when they hit the market on Steam you can get it for cheap, knowing you might have been part of the game-building process! Check out the full list of indie booths right here!

6. All the merch you could want

Everyone needs a friend!
8-bit Bob Ross draws a happy little tree

The vendor hall at MAGFest was so ridiculously jammed with cool stuff we’re positive we didn’t see it all. Ranging from 10-cent bags of dice to brand new unopened board games to the more pricy hand-crafted leather works or painted posters, toys, and models, the whole huge room was a cornucopia of games, artwork and assorted knickknacks for every variety of game enthusiast.

There was so much stuff to see and to buy
Just take my money. Plz.

Walking around the various vendor kiosks at MAGFest was like window-shopping at a nerdy bazaar. In one direction a set of handmade stuffed Koopalings, in another direction nerf guns, still another direction some life-sized paintings of Lara Croft, Geralt of Rivia, or Link. Geeky squeals of delight around every corner as people unbox a chibi Garrus Vakarian or Little Sister from Bioshock.

7. Live video game music

This convention was a triumph
The Triforce Quartet plays the Portal theme for a crowd

Nothing hits you in the nostalgia quite like a familiar video game track. Be it the Dragonborn theme from Skyrim, the title theme to Monkey Island, the final boss fight track to Undertale, or the shreddin’ intro to Halo 2, it’s sure to get the memories flooding back and the blood pumping as you geek out in a crowd of cheering fans. Check out a list of bands that played here.

If listening to a video game track is awesome, then just wait until that track is performed by a live string quartet, or a jazz combo taking requests. MAGFest has a live performance every few hours, and no two bands are the same. If you’re craving something a little more wild and unrehearsed they’ve got that covered too: There’s a Jam Room where anybody can go and bring an instrument and play with whoever else happens by. We saw a trumpeter jamming with a rhythm section on what may have once been Rainbow Road.

Musicians are welcomed. Musicians are encouraged.

8. Crazy Cosplayers

doesn't mean it's not terrifying
Costume game on point

Looking for a good place to show off your Han Solo costume? Maybe bring a Fellowship of friends, or strut the halls as One Punch Man? You couldn’t ask for a better place to do it. MAGFest is teeming with cosplayers sporting costumes of all shapes, sizes, genres, and corners of the world. Enjoy the view or suit up yourself and prepare to be bombarded with people asking for a picture!

I saw this guy take pose requests 4 times in 5 minutes
If you’re in costume, expect people to want pics with you!

We get that this aspect is NOT for everybody, and feel it’s a good time to mention that it is wholly unnecessary. Cosplaying is added fun, but there were certainly a ton of people out of costume just quietly wandering around playing video games or sitting in on panels. MAGFest even has an ‘AFK Room‘ set up for the con-goer who feels to socially bombarded. It’s a quiet room off to the side where people can zone out, pull out their laptops, sneak a nap, or even fill in a coloring book. When you’re feeling rejuvenated you can head back out and greet the colorful masses.

9. Advertise your own game!

MAGFest is a beacon for any indie game developers, and if that’s you, you definitely need to consider getting a booth to show off your stuff! The convention had numerous tables laden with indie board games and video games and is an excellent place to look for feedback in a crowd comprised of your exact audience: Gamers. You might even pick up a new member for your development team!

If you think your product is ready to meet the masses and get hard-tested by tons of experienced gamers, sign up for a booth on their website!

10. Be among your people

Mush alert: Amidst all the indie booths, posters and games to buy, arcades to play for hours on end, LAN parties to jump in whenever you like, and live performances and panels MAGFest is a huge community of people who share a passion and excitement for nerd culture and video games. From the hardcore Final Fantasy guru who cosplays as Vivi to the casual Persona fan, to the musician aspiring to compose for a big game company one day, know there’s a place for you at MAGFest.

Look at this gaggle of wonderful nerds
Celebrate your favorite stuff with awesome people

We hope to see you there next year!
