Helldivers 2 is being a monumental success. In addition to being an absurdly fun and extraordinarily well-designed game, it is a game that shows care and interest at all levels. Its developers have created a very interesting gameplay loop. And players have responded well to it.

The game is a satire where we embody a soldier in a platoon defending Super Earth from the attack of alien insects and robots. The interest is that the advance of these threats is real. If there are not enough people playing, getting involved in the appropriate missions, these creatures could invade Earth. Something for which a group of players have created the perfect tool: Helldiver.io, a website that shows the evolution of the war at any given time, and which sectors need more help. In an interview with PC Gamer, Pilestedt talked about how he was inspired by tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons to design Helldivers 2.

“We all imagine it together and then talk about it as if it were real life,” says Pilestedt when talking about his experiences with TTRPGs. “We can joke about it decades later: ‘Do you remember when you made me fly through the air with that spell?'”.

“In [Helldivers 2…], it’s still the same type of tight-knit group that had the shared experience and it’s going to be something that connects those four [players] who were there with a very special moment.”

Helldivers 2 is being a success, something that some unscrupulous individuals are taking advantage of to try to scam people who want to play it.

Even using a graphics engine that has been unsupported for many years. A feat that no one expected, probably not even the people at the studio themselves. This has led to some unscrupulous individuals trying to take advantage of its success.

For a few hours, on August 29, 2024, it seemed like Helldivers 2 had a 75% off offer. And another one for 50%. And also the game at its base price, 39.99 euros. That is, for a few hours there were three different entries of Helldivers 2 on Steam, causing some users to feel very confused about it. As noted by the well-known influencer Wario64 on Twitter, this was an attempt to scam and take advantage of the game’s success. Because the two Helldivers 2 with an associated offer were, in reality, other games pretending to be Arrowhead’s in order to scam users.

Modifying metadata on the Steam page is very easy, as long as the game is already approved. Reviewing the information on Steamdb, it is possible to see that these two entries were for games called DO NOT SMILE and Figurality. Despite the name change, it is possible to see their original names and the changes made over time, both coinciding with the fraud.

Figurality modified all its data to copy Helldivers 2 at 3:53 in the morning on Thursday, February 29th, while DO NOT SMILE would do it at 4:45 on the same day. Although we do not know if it was a coordinated scam, or if the developers of DO NOT SMILE saw what Figurality did and decided to take advantage of the situation, Steam would take approximately four hours to remove both pages from the store.

While this type of scams is not common, they could happen again in the future. The best ways to avoid them are to use common sense. If an offer is too good to be true, it is important to check the developer’s social media to see if they mention anything about an ongoing offer. If not, we should check if there are multiple entries for the same game in the search engine; if there are, it is likely to be a scam, but not necessarily. Finally, for complete security, we can check the Steamdb record, where changes cannot go unnoticed. This is the 100% safe way to avoid being deceived.

While it is true that Steam took care of both quickly, that doesn’t mean it’s not important to keep in mind that these things happen. They could happen again. And the best way to avoid them is to have the tools to be able to identify them and let the platform know so they can intervene.

So many, that it was impossible to reply to one without two more coming in… and Discord’s bot detector had the brilliant idea of considering her a bot. Goodbye, account.

Arrowhead Game Studios has released a small but significant patch for Helldivers 2 to improve game stability and connection issues.

Patch 01.000.006 has been deployed today (February 14th) on PC and PlayStation 5 and is a direct response to ongoing player reports regarding server connectivity issues and matchmaking errors.

The multiplayer shooter, which was released last week on February 8th, recently received a patch for both PC and console with a similar goal to fix performance, server, and login issues.

However, Arrowhead was forced to roll back the PC version as players were “experiencing significant performance degradation”.

It seems that the latest patch has addressed this issue by solving disconnection and stability problems, and the studio has explained that it has improved backend activity to reduce the likelihood of disconnection during missions. They have also implemented a “build for upcoming server matchmaking improvements,” which will likely be added in a later patch.

In addition, some online players have been experiencing an error that would crash the game if they had too many friends, but this has fortunately been resolved with the latest patch, along with other crashes related to disconnection during the matchmaking scene.

Summary of the September PlayStation Direct

Sony made a lackluster PlayStation Direct today that is saved thanks to a great announcement by Square Enix and a very good start.

Sony is not known for conferences that stand out in terms of pace or quality, except for honorable exceptions. Unfortunately, this PlayStation Direct has not been one of those exceptions. While there was a big surprise at the end and a good start, the conference got lost among half-baked announcements and dedicating too much time to things that didn’t need it. But that won’t stop us from summarizing everything that has happened so that you know all that they have announced. And even more importantly, so that you can assess everything properly.

The PlayStation Direct began with Baby Steps, and it was quite an intense way to start. Developed by Maxi Boch, Gabe Cuzzillo, and Bennett Foddy, the latter two have previously worked together on APE OUT, and Bennett Foddy is especially known for the successful game among streamers, Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. Here, they continue with their same sense of humor, combining player frustration with pushing the boundaries of game design to find what makes an experience memorable. However, we’ll have to wait until summer 2024 for its release.

Next came a small VR segment. They showed a Ghostbusters game titled Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghostlord, set to be released on October 26, and the VR mode for Resident Evil 4 Remake, scheduled for winter. They also announced the Resident Evil 4 Separate’s Ways DLC, which allows us to experience the adventure from Ada’s perspective and will be released on September 21, along with an update to the Mercenaries mode.

Outside of this block, there have been three games that have stood out especially. The arrival of Roblox on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on October 10, the release of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on December 7 and some technical aspects of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which will be released on October 20. Three advertisements that we already knew and that, despite having shown more about the games, have not shown much more that we did not know.

In addition to those, they have shown a quick preview of another game series. They have shown Ghostrunner II, an interesting platform hack’n’slash that will be released on October 26 and has a demo now available. They have shown Helldivers II, which will be released for both Steam and PlayStation 5, and have dated its release for February 8, 2024. They have announced a DLC for Tales of Arise, called Beyond the Dawn, for next November 9, without giving more information. They have tiptoed around the launch of Honkai: Star Rail on PlayStation 5 on October 11. And they have spent more time than the two previous announcements combined talking about Foamstars, a Splatoon clone that will have an open beta between September 29 and October 1.

Nevertheless, the big highlight came at the end. That’s when they announced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released on February 29, 2024. This closed a conference that lacked much excitement and could have been more interesting with a bit more effort from Sony.
