Why did it take us 15 years to have another ‘Avatar’ game?

For 15 years Pandora has remained closed to us. Well, more or less: Why haven’t we had more games based on the work of James Cameron until ‘Frontiers of Pandora’?

In 2009, ‘Avatar’ suddenly became the highest-grossing film in history. And back then, that only meant one thing: tons of merchandise, board games, lunchboxes, and video games expanding the story. However, for 15 years, Pandora has remained closed to us. Well, more or less: Why haven’t we had more games based on James Cameron’s work until ‘Frontiers of Pandora‘?

One can’t even explain it in Na’vi

It’s true that the trick of licensed games (giving a lower-quality product with the excuse that fans would buy it) was already stumbling by the late 2000s, but it’s surprising that no one had the audacity to try to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Well, no one except Ubisoft, which in 2009, taking advantage of the movie release, did release ‘Avatar: The Game’ for all existing consoles (from Nintendo DS to Xbox 360) with mixed results.

Actually, ‘Avatar: The Game’ was a sequel to the movie set two years later and introduced a new character, Able Ryder, where some characters from the film made cameo appearances. In the PSP and Wii versions, however, the plot was completely different, following a Na’vi, Raiuk, who stood against the military after they destroyed his village. Finally, the DS version followed a Na’vi named Nok who tried to put an end to biological experimentation on their kind. Three very different games under the same title that came to prove one thing: it’s not worth the effort to do things like this.

The audience couldn’t transition from James Cameron‘s incredible 3D worlds to terrible graphics on the Nintendo Wii, and despite Cameron’s involvement, everyone knew it. Even if you had the right TV, you could play it in 3D, during that time when every movie went crazy for the gimmick. But making a licensed adventure game set in Pandora that was ordinary wasn’t what fans wanted, especially not with such poor quality.

Moreover, would it have made sense to have an ‘Avatar’ game in 2015, after six years completely lost in the nebula of popular culture? It was an utterly unmanageable risk: there have been no video games (or extended universe, in general) based on ‘Avatar’ simply because it’s a franchise that, despite its undeniable earnings, doesn’t exist, doesn’t resonate—it doesn’t breathe like ‘Alien’ or ‘Star Wars’, which are always at the forefront of popular culture. ‘Avatar’ exists to make a splash, to be the biggest success possible, and then disappear.

And maybe that’s why it only makes sense to try how it works on consoles now that it’s back, momentarily, in the minds of the general public, and consoles can deliver graphics that were previously unheard of. If it was going to happen at any time, it’s now. We’ll see if it makes sense.

If you’re waiting for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we have very good news about its future

If you are waiting for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we have very good news about its future, because it will be supported, at least, throughout 2024

“Avatar” is one of the highest-grossing films in the history of cinema. Although the reasons might not be entirely clear, as its influence on subsequent culture hasn’t been particularly radical, it’s undeniable that it holds something. It manages to connect with a part of the audience. That’s why we’re looking forward to the next Avatar game, still in development today. And today, we’ve had some fantastic news for its fans.

“Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” is a game developed by Ubisoft based on James Cameron’s famous cinematic work. Set to release on December 7 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Amazon Luna, and PC, the initial impressions from those who have had the chance to try it have been positive. And now, Ubisoft has confirmed what the game’s season pass will contain.

The season pass, in addition to the usual cosmetics, will include some extra missions for the main story, for those seeking more content for the game. But the most significant aspect is that it will feature two story expansions. Named “The Sky Breaker” and “Secrets of the Spires,” the first will be released in the summer of 2024 and the second in the fall, giving us more than enough time to explore and deeply familiarize ourselves with everything Pandora has to offer.

Additionally, we know some details about these expansions. In “The Sky Breaker,” we’ll uncover a mysterious shadow in the sky that terrifies the Na’vi, and we’ll have to protect ourselves from it. On the other hand, “Secrets of the Spires” will focus entirely on aerial combat, giving more emphasis to that aspect of the game.

How much these two expansions will contribute to the game is something yet to be seen. What we do know is that both are included in the season pass, which comes with the Gold and Ultimate editions of the game but can also be purchased separately.

Summary of the September PlayStation Direct

Sony made a lackluster PlayStation Direct today that is saved thanks to a great announcement by Square Enix and a very good start.

Sony is not known for conferences that stand out in terms of pace or quality, except for honorable exceptions. Unfortunately, this PlayStation Direct has not been one of those exceptions. While there was a big surprise at the end and a good start, the conference got lost among half-baked announcements and dedicating too much time to things that didn’t need it. But that won’t stop us from summarizing everything that has happened so that you know all that they have announced. And even more importantly, so that you can assess everything properly.

The PlayStation Direct began with Baby Steps, and it was quite an intense way to start. Developed by Maxi Boch, Gabe Cuzzillo, and Bennett Foddy, the latter two have previously worked together on APE OUT, and Bennett Foddy is especially known for the successful game among streamers, Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. Here, they continue with their same sense of humor, combining player frustration with pushing the boundaries of game design to find what makes an experience memorable. However, we’ll have to wait until summer 2024 for its release.

Next came a small VR segment. They showed a Ghostbusters game titled Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghostlord, set to be released on October 26, and the VR mode for Resident Evil 4 Remake, scheduled for winter. They also announced the Resident Evil 4 Separate’s Ways DLC, which allows us to experience the adventure from Ada’s perspective and will be released on September 21, along with an update to the Mercenaries mode.

Outside of this block, there have been three games that have stood out especially. The arrival of Roblox on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on October 10, the release of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora on December 7 and some technical aspects of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which will be released on October 20. Three advertisements that we already knew and that, despite having shown more about the games, have not shown much more that we did not know.

In addition to those, they have shown a quick preview of another game series. They have shown Ghostrunner II, an interesting platform hack’n’slash that will be released on October 26 and has a demo now available. They have shown Helldivers II, which will be released for both Steam and PlayStation 5, and have dated its release for February 8, 2024. They have announced a DLC for Tales of Arise, called Beyond the Dawn, for next November 9, without giving more information. They have tiptoed around the launch of Honkai: Star Rail on PlayStation 5 on October 11. And they have spent more time than the two previous announcements combined talking about Foamstars, a Splatoon clone that will have an open beta between September 29 and October 1.

Nevertheless, the big highlight came at the end. That’s when they announced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released on February 29, 2024. This closed a conference that lacked much excitement and could have been more interesting with a bit more effort from Sony.
