Pokémon GO introduces the Party Play feature for playing with friends

Pokémon GO continues to work on offering new features and mechanics, surprising the world by revealing the Party Play function. With this feature, users can join a team of players in real-time to complete challenges, missions, and joint tasks. This way, players will have a completely new way to interact in Niantic’s game.

Since the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO has been a mass phenomenon, with varying numbers of players. Social interaction has always been essential while playing, as routes and raids are more enjoyable when shared with others. Now, with the Party Play mode, this social aspect will be more enhanced than ever before.

Party Play, your friends on screen

One of the most striking aspects of this new Party Play is that, for the first time, we will be able to see our friends’ avatars walking alongside us on the screen. However, as Pokémon GO shows on its official blog, this isn’t just a “cosmetic” enhancement of seeing our friends accompanying us; it will also be used to tackle unique challenges.

When our Party Play is active, we can participate in team challenges, allowing us to earn great rewards while working together with our teammates and friends. Capturing Pokémon, engaging in raids, spinning PokéStops, and more challenges can be completed with this mode active. Just remember, you need to reach level 15 to enjoy Party Play!

By scanning a common QR code, you can join your friends in the game.

Pokémon GO, the challenge of becoming timeless

Pokémon GO faces a challenge more significant than it might initially seem. After more than six years of constantly introducing new Pokémon to Niantic’s game, there are fewer and fewer left to be added. There are still methods missing to obtain several Pokémon from the last three generations, including legendaries, but creatures from all currently released titles, including Paldea, are already in the game. Sooner or later, the remaining Pokémon to be added in the game will run out.

With the release of the second part of the Pokémon Scarlet and Purple DLC, new species are not expected in the short term. At the very least, the next generation is not anticipated until 2025 if the current three-year pace is maintained. Therefore, the game needs to find incentives to keep its player base engaged. Party Play seems to be a step in that direction, aiming to retain players without expanding Pokémon GO’s Pokédex.

Preventing a robbery or playing ‘Pokémon Go’? Some cops were caught who were very clear about their choice

“Your honor! It is true that my clients avoided attending a robbery to hunt Pokémon, yes! But they were a Snorlax and a Togetic, they are quite complicated to obtain, isn’t it more important than a human life?”

Everything in life is about choices: Eat cake or exercise? Skip school or go to class? Work or call in sick? Catch a criminal or play ‘Pokémon Go‘? The answer might seem obvious, but some Los Angeles police officers apparently didn’t see it that way at the time. And one might think there’s no evidence, but their car’s camera has revealed a complete police disaster.

Lots of Pokémon, lots of fun

“Your Honor! It’s true that my clients chose to ignore a robbery to catch Pokémon, yes! But they were a Snorlax and a Togetic, quite rare to find, isn’t that more important than a human life?” Yes, the lawyer definitely has a tough case here. But it’s even worse than it sounds because not only did they fail to prevent the robbery, but they also broke the law themselves.

The video shows the driver ignoring a stop sign, speeding through residential areas, driving the wrong way… all to catch a Snorlax and a Togetic. It’s worth mentioning, this didn’t happen this year but back in 2017, during the peak of the game’s popularity. But back then, there was no public video evidence of the incident… and now it has come to light.

In the video, they can be seen worried about losing the Snorlax (“It’s going to turn pink and change into something else”), discussing the powers of Togetic, getting excited about the possibility that ‘Pokémon Go‘ might one day release the Master Ball in its code (they guessed right about 70 months in advance), and commenting that the other police officers would be jealous of their feat. Yes. Well. Not exactly.

They could have gotten away with it and been outstanding police-Pokémon trainers, but they messed up by not responding to the radio for forty minutes during the robbery, which alerted their boss. Their lies didn’t help them at all, and in the end, the evidence has made the truth hit them like a Snorlax taking its ninth nap of the day. Look on the bright side: now they’ll have much more time to dedicate to their favorite game.

How to evolve Pawmo in Pokémon Go

Niantic has introduced a new challenge that’s making waves in the Pokémon universe: evolving Pawmi into Pawmo and finally into the coveted Pawmot. In this guide, we’ll break down the steps and requirements to help you achieve this unique evolution and add Pawmot to your collection. Whether you’re a seasoned trainer or just starting your adventure, we’ve got you covered.

What is Pawmi?

On September 10, Pokémon GO introduced Pawmi, a unique creature from the Scarlet and Violet regions. Unlike most Pokémon that evolve with candies, Pawmi has its own way of evolving. Don’t worry; we’ll guide you through it.

Before we jump into the evolution process, it’s a good idea to prepare. Try to catch a strong Pawmi with good stats. Having a powerful Pawmi will make the evolution process smoother and give you a final Pokémon that’s great for your Pokédex and battles.

Now that you know what’s ahead, let’s get started on evolving Pawmi into Pawmo and eventually Pawmot in Pokémon GO.

How to Get Pawmo and Pawmot in Pokémon GO

Evolving Pawmi into Pawmo and Pawmot involves a few steps, but don’t worry; we’ll take it step by step:

  1. Catch a Pawmi: You can find Pawmi in the wild or by completing certain research tasks. Keep an eye out for this cute Pokémon during your adventures.
  2. Evolve Pawmi into Pawmo: To evolve Pawmi into Pawmo, you’ll need 25 Pokémon GO Candy. You can get these candies by catching more Pawmi or trading in extra Pawmi with Professor Willow.
  3. Evolve Pawmo into Pawmot: This is where it gets interesting. To evolve Pawmo into Pawmot, you need 100 Pokémon GO Candy. But that’s not all; Pawmo needs to be your buddy Pokémon and walk with you for 25 kilometers. It’s a bit of a journey, but worth it in the end.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll witness the incredible transformation of your Pawmi into the mighty Pawmot.

How to Get Shiny Pawmi in Pokémon GO

Shiny Pokémon are a big deal in the Pokémon world, and many trainers are eager to find them. Unfortunately, as of now, Shiny Pawmi hasn’t been added to Pokémon GO. Even during the exciting Ultra Unlock: Paldea event, Shiny Pawmi didn’t make an appearance.

Niantic usually introduces Shiny Pokémon separately from the regular ones. So, it might take some time before you can find a Shiny Pawmi. Keep an eye out for future events and updates from Niantic. There’s still a chance that Shiny Pawmi might pop up in the game.

In summary, evolving Pawmi into Pawmo and Pawmot in Pokémon GO may seem a little tricky, but with some preparation and determination, you’ll get there. Soon, you’ll have a powerful Pawmot to join you on your Pokémon adventures. So, gear up, catch those Pawmi, and get ready for an exciting evolution quest!

Unity intends to charge studios for every time someone installs a video game made with its engine

Unity has made some changes to its business policies, leaving very few satisfied people who use its engine to create their video games.

In the current video game industry, it’s rare to find a studio that uses its own engine. The pie is mainly divided between two major engines, Unity and Unreal Engine, with Godot being a distant third in terms of usage. That’s why any changes in the policies of the companies that produce these engines, Unity and Epic respectively, are closely scrutinized. However, the recent changes in Unity’s business policies don’t require a close examination to see why they are causing quite a stir.

Unity is a game engine that has been used to create games like Pokémon Go, Cult of the Lamb, Cuphead, or Fall Guys. It’s used for all kinds of games, both indie and large-scale productions, and up until now, it employed a subscription-based model. And we have to emphasize the “up until now.”

Unreal Engine DOWNLOAD

In Unity, there are three licensing tiers. Unity Personal allows developers with annual revenues under $100,000 to use the engine for free. Those with revenues exceeding this but below $200,000 must pay for Unity Plus, which costs $400 per year. Anyone surpassing this figure is required to pay for Unity Pro, Industry, or Enterprise, which costs $2,000, $5,000, or a specific amount of dollars per year depending on their studio’s specific needs.

What Unity has done is announce the elimination of Unity Plus. Consequently, there’s now a leap from Personal to Pro, where the cost increases fivefold for the same service.

But what has caused the most controversy is the fact that starting from January 1, 2024, they want to introduce a usage fee. For every installation of a game that generates over $200,000 in revenue annually, Unity will charge $0.20 for each new installation. The higher the subscription level, the less Unity will charge per download, but this has caused many developers to protest what they consider to be excessive prices.

How this will all end is still up in the air. What’s clear is that with the current prices, Unity is finding it challenging to keep independent studios happy. And with these fees, larger studios have no reason not to seek fairer alternatives.

Paldea is coming to Pokémon Go! Is it time to come back?

Do you remember the summer of ‘Pokémon Go’? It was 2016 and hunting Pikachus in the park and getting items from the monuments of your city was something new, fun and that made us go out to feel like Ash Ketchum but with a Xiaomi acting as a pokéball. Now, seven years later, the game is renewed every so often: if it was already unrecognizable in recent months, now comes the Pokémon of Paldea.

Are the people of Paldea Paldeans?

Fuecoco and the rest of the ‘Violet/Scarlet’ Pokémon will arrive on your mobile next week, during a new event related to Paldea in which you can catch the three initial ones, but also Lechonk, which will have a shiny version, Nymbil, Pawmi, Bombirdier and Frigibax, each with their relevant evolutions.

But of course, Niantic is not going to make it that easy. The initial Pokémon of Paldea you can choose yourself, but everything seems to indicate that both Quaxly and Sprigatito (in the case that, as a good person, you choose Fuecoco to accompany you) can be caught in the usual way: walking a lot. For its part, Lechonk and its shiny version can be found in the 7 kilometers eggs, along with the shiny versions of Hoppip, Houndour, Buizel and Fletchling.

There will also be changes for the most fans of ‘Pokémon Go‘: for example, from day 8 Kartana and Celesteela will swap hemispheres where they can be found. Your favorite Pokémon from Paldea do not appear at the moment? Don’t worry, because they have already announced that along with the first DLC of the game on Switch more will appear.

Is it time to come back? Maybe. It’s true that the game still has problems and it’s now much more complicated to become a Pokémon master (after all, there are people who have been playing for years and years), but a little revival moment never hurts. For Fuecoco anything, what the hell.

From Pokémon Hype to Workplace Crisis: Layoffs and Accusations of Sexual Discrimination Shake Pokémon Go

Things are not looking good at Niantic, definitely. And they have brought it on themselves.

Just a few days ago, Niantic announced a sudden wave of layoffs, the cancellation of several games, and left ‘Pokémon Go’ as the sole branch the company could rely on to generate profits. Today, to add insult to injury, we have learned that a former employee has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit against them. Things are not looking good for Niantic, without a doubt. And they have brought it upon themselves.

Pokémon Go DOWNLOAD

Pokemon not

The lawsuit clearly explains that women, especially women of color, were not being paid equally for the same job positions as men within the company. In fact, it directly accuses Niantic of being a “boys’ club.” Let’s not deceive ourselves, this is more common than it seems in an industry that, morally, sometimes appears to be stuck in the era of eight-bit gaming.

In this case, the woman explains that (don’t be alarmed by the figures) she started earning $70,000 annually in February 2020, but eventually ended up with a salary of $84,000 when she realized that a male colleague with a lower rank was making more money despite having fewer responsibilities. As you can guess, this finding didn’t sit well with her.

To give you an idea: last year, while she was earning $105,000 per year, he, who was one level below her, was making $127,000. In other words, the difference was equivalent to a person’s salary in Spain. Even with a $10,000 annual increase in 2023, she was still below her male colleague. Furthermore, when Niantic was obligated (due to transparency laws) to disclose the pay range for people at her level, she was still $10,000 below the lowest price announced by the company itself.

And what happened when the women at Niantic raised their concerns to higher-ups? You can imagine: pure hostility. In fact, during that meeting, she was told that her job evaluations were being affected by discussing such matters in the workplace, which made her give up her attempt to address the issue. What a wonderful place to work, right? Almost as wonderful as Blizzard or Riot. The video game industry, the little clubhouse where many feel that women shouldn’t have a place. It’s 2023, and it’s about time things changed.

Pokémon Go Nears its Final Evolution: Reflecting on Seven Years of Adventure as the Game’s End Looms

The media began to talk about how Pokémon Go was making people invade private spaces and even die from looking at the screen so much. And seven years later, what?

July 13, 2016. Pokémon Go‘ arrives on our cell phones and turns everything upside down. Overnight, we’re all out hunting for creatures in our city despite the mechanics being overly simple and the possibilities rather rickety. Yet there we are, alerting us with messages like “A Gyarados has appeared in Plaza de Castilla”. The media started talking about how ‘Pokémon Go’ was making people invade private spaces and even die from looking at the screen so much. And seven years later, what?

Gotta catch ’em none

Niantic, the company behind ‘Pokémon Go’, was very happy. At last ‘Ingress’, that game based on geolocation that had failed a few years earlier, was making sense thanks to someone else’s saga. Everyone was making money hand over fist and it seemed that the moment of joy would never end. Until, in 2023, it is rare to find trainers on the streets: the app is at a low ebb but, at the same time, it is the only thing that makes them money. Get them all, big trouble.

Niantic became adept at ‘virtual reality gaming’ on mobile. ‘Harry Potter: Wizards Unite’ was basically a magical ‘Pokémon Go‘ that lasted a year and a half before shutting down. It was just the first of a few. ‘Catan: World Explorers’, based on the world’s most famous modern board game, barely lasted another year because, frankly, it was impossible to port ‘Catan’ to the MMO, let alone localization-based.

Ass I see, ass I want, everyone wanted their own game based on geolocation, without realizing that not even Harry Potter could work its magic to succeed. ‘Transformers’, ‘Pikmin’, NBA, Marvel… Niantic got lucky with one game (what’s the point of making a basketball ‘Pokémon Go’?) and since then everything has been simple repetition.

So much so that they have just fired 230 employees from their Los Angeles studio with the excuse that expenses are growing faster than profits. Although they want to make ‘Pokémon Go’ a game that lasts forever, the truth is that this is only the beginning of the end. As much as it is the only thing that makes them money, the figure is getting smaller and smaller, and a company cannot live all its life on the profits of a single game.

World of Warcraft’ was doing well for Blizzard, but next to it were ‘Overwatch’, ‘Diablo‘ or ‘Starcraft’. To close the doors and focus all efforts on a title whose time of glory has passed is to sign a contract for disaster. And is that the company’s own leaders have stated that they have a lot of work to do in terms of retention and benefits. Come on, I wouldn’t be too fond of your Pikachu and the gyms where you are eternal leaders. They may not last forever.

Lake Trio spotted in Pokémon GO

Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie are appearing in the wild, and there may be a trick to finding them.

Pokemon Lake Trio

Niantic announced today that Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie can be challenged in Raids.

The mons will be able to be challenged in raids from May 2 until May 27.  Uxie can be challenged in the Asia-Pacific area. Mesprit can be challenged in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. Azelf is in the Americas and Greenland.

According to a tweet from Pokémon GO’s Twitter page, Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie are spawning in the wild.

If you have friends overseas, hope and pray that they catch two, so they’ll trade you one.

They are also very rare and have a high-catch rate, so break out those Golden Razz Berries. There is some evidence that came from Reddit suggesting that they are more likely to spawn near bodies of water.

Along with the Lake Trio, Shellos made its debut in Pokémon GO. However, it was only available in a 10-minute window. It is unclear whether or not this was intentional from Niantic. The lovable snail was available in both his pink and blue forms. Ground-type mons have also been appearing in greater numbers. Even Groudon has made its way back, appearing in raids.

6 AR apps with more utility than Pokémon Go

From getting fit to honing your art skills, augmented reality is much more than catching Pokémon.

Augmented reality in actionAugmented reality, or AR, sounds like this crazy, futuristic technology. However, the reality is that AR apps are like little projectors that “augment” the real world.

We’ve seen how AR can help you catch Pokémon in Pokémon Go, but the technology goes so much further than catching Pidgey outside the train station.

Fitness AR isn’t necessarily a utility you absolutely need, but it’s rad. The app is a solid motivational tool. It is a way to visualize your Strava runs in an AR environment — like a 3D model of your hikes, bike rides, and jogs.

While you definitely don’t need Fitness AR to map out your next run, there’s something satisfying in using a 3D model. It’s like you’re the captain of your very own 3D ship.

Sketch AR

Sketch AR Drawing app

Call it cheating if you like, but a resourceful artist uses the tools they have available. They don’t “take the high road” by free-handing every little detail.

Sketch AR is essentially a tracing app. However, it’s cooler than the lightboxes you might have used in an art class. The app has two core functions. The first is, it’s a digital art lesson of sorts. According to the App Store description, aspiring artists work their way through a series of lessons. In the lessons, you’ll be tracing everything from hands to pandas.

It’s a cool concept, but learning how to draw is less about tracing and trying to remember the movements. It is more about learning how to see — and how to represent spatial relationships. Tracing won’t teach you how to do this.

Where it’s actually useful is in blowing something up so you can transfer it to another surface. For example: let’s say you’ve found an image you’d like to paint — quickly trace it onto the canvas using your phone as a projector. You can also do the same with a small sketch you’d like to turn into a large piece of work.

Google Translate might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think AR experience. However, it’s actually one of the most useful AR applications in the game. Admittedly some of these apps are marginally useful. Chances are we’ll all be okay whether or not we choose to download GIPHY World’s 3D GIF-maker or map-out a 3D diagram of our cycling routes. However, AR still hasn’t quite found its footing.

It goes to show that the technology is more than Pokémon GO and Snapchat filters. There are some cool apps from the experimental to the actually useful. Admittingly, we’re still waiting for the augmented reality app we just can’t live without. In the meantime, there are plenty of apps to capture our interest.

How Nintendo could conquer mobile gaming

Here’s how Nintendo could take the lead in mobile gaming.

The invention of the smartphone sent shockwaves throughout the gaming industry. Most of the public now had powerful computers in their pocket, and hundreds of thousands of games to choose from. Unlike console and PC games, most mobile games are free to play, allowing the player to use real money to buy in-game content that would be difficult or impossible to obtain otherwise. This monetization model has proved to be extremely successful, and as of summer 2018, mobile games make up 51% of the gaming industry’s revenue (console games make up 25% while PC games make up 24%).

Nintendo was struggling around the time when mobile gaming was really hitting its stride. Nintendo’s Wii U was getting crushed in the console gaming market due to underpowered hardware and bafflingly awful marketing. After a few years of slugging along, the 3DS became a highly successful portable console, but still faced harsh competition from mobile games. Nintendo faced multiple quarters where they operated at a loss. Facing investor pressure, Nintendo went back on their statements against mobile gaming and entered the market in 2016. Despite its necessity, it was a surprising move considering how traditional and stubborn Nintendo is known to be.

How Nintendo currently approaches mobile games

Super Mario Run

As a console manufacturer, Nintendo designs its mobile games to be supplementary experiences. What this means is that Nintendo is not trying to make mobile games that imitate or replace their full-fledged console entries. Instead, they tend to have simpler, more lightweight gameplay that appeals to a mobile audience. Nintendo does this in order to create brand awareness for their properties among the enormous mobile game market, ideally encouraging customers to buy Nintendo consoles and games. With this in mind, it’s extremely unlikely that we’ll see any full-blown, high production value Mario or Zelda games on mobile any time soon.

So far, Nintendo has released five mobile games: Miitomo, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Dragalia Lost. Interest in Miitomo, a diet version of the 3DS game Tomodachi Life, waned quickly in the months after its release. Super Mario Run, however, ended up becoming a decent success for Nintendo, who translated the classic 2-D Mario formula into that of an endless runner. While the game’s first few levels are available for free, players must spend $10 to unlock the full game, leading to widespread criticism. Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp both became much more profitable games, despite lacking the massive brand recognition of Mario. Both games follow a more traditional free-to-play model, and feature microtransactions. Dragalia Lost is largely seen as a generic mobile gacha/collection game with higher production value.

Before you ask, Nintendo was not involved in the development or release of the smash hit Pokémon Go, though former president Satoru Iwata was involved in its conception. Nintendo does not fully own the Pokémon franchise, and licensed out its characters to developer Niantic through The Pokémon Company. Despite this, the success of Pokémon Go caused Nintendo’s stock value to skyrocket, further showing them the potential of mobile gaming.

While Nintendo has been heading in the right direction since the fiscally disappointing release of Super Mario Run, here are some ways they could really shake up the mobile games market.

How Nintendo could succeed with mobile games

1. Stick to the free-to-play model

Though Super Mario Run was successful, it did not meet Nintendo’s fiscal expectations. Super Mario Run had all the ingredients of a record-shattering hit, so why didn’t it happen? Even with one of the most recognizable brands in the world and the proven endless runner formula, general audiences could not get behind the game’s $10 price point.

Mobile gamers are used to being able to download games for free, with the ability to purchase in-game content in small increments. Games like this can be mostly be played in their entirety for free, and money is only needed for exclusive content or power-ups. Super Mario Run, on the other hand, locks most of the game behind the $10 paywall and does not feature microtransactions. $10 is a huge price for entry in the world of mobile games, and Super Mario Run has since failed to hit the 10% premium adoption rate that Nintendo hoped it would.

Nintendo seems to have learned from its mistake, as moving forward, all of its mobile games have followed the tried-and-true freemium model. If Nintendo is to become successful in the mobile games market, they need to follow the established formula and make the barrier for entry as low as possible.

2. Nintendo should start with high profile franchises and work their way down

While Nintendo’s main objective with mobile games is to increase brand awareness of their IP’s, they need to prove themselves in the mobile arena first by releasing games based on their most popular franchises. Nintendo wisely chose Mario Kart as their upcoming mobile game, as the franchise is far and away the most popular racing series in the world. By establishing consumer trust with bite-sized versions of AAA franchises like Mario Kart, Zelda, and Donkey Kong, Nintendo can give themselves more freedom to experiment with lesser-known franchises.

Nintendo could drum up more interest in some of their more niche franchises like Star Fox, Pikmin, or F-Zero by introducing new games in the mobile game market, creating more mainstream brand awareness and possibly leading to more mainline entries in the series on consoles. Newer Nintendo franchises like Splatoon or Arms could also benefit immensely from the awareness that comes with a popular mobile game.

3. Design social games

If there’s one thing to be learned from Pokémon Go, it’s that social mobile games are the best kind of mobile games. A huge part of Pokémon Go’s success was that the game encouraged you to seek out fellow players and encourage your friends to download the game. Games that encourage sociability create long-lasting communities. Allowing players to team up with (or against) friends helps organically spread the popularity of the game, and this combined with the free-to-play model can lead to thousands of players at least trying out your game. Social features, as well as social media integration, are key to a mobile game’s success, and Nintendo must incorporate these features into all of their mobile games moving forward.

Do you enjoy Nintendo’s mobile games? Which Nintendo games would you like to see on mobile? Let us know!
