We have Marvel everywhere. Not just in comics (in fact, perhaps less in comics than anywhere else), but in movies, series, amusement parks, and pop culture in general. There is no one who doesn’t know Iron Man, Spider-Man, or Hulk, and the proof of this is how well all their video games continue to perform, from Marvel Rivals to the well-known Spider-Man by Insomniac. We have Marvel everywhere. Not just in comics (in fact, perhaps less in comics than anywhere else), but in movies, series, theme parks, and pop culture in general. There is no one who doesn’t know Iron Man, Spider-Man, or Hulk, and the proof of this is how well all their video games continue to perform, from Marvel Rivals to the well-known Spider-Man by Insomniac. However, this love story between superheroes and video games does not come from now, but from a whopping 44 years ago, when Atari received the game of a certain web-slinger that became one of the most popular of the time… although we would never hear about its creator again.
Do what a spider does
You probably know Parker Brothers (now Hasbro) for their board games, such as Monopoly, Clue, Risk, Ouija, or Scrabble, but back in the day, trying not to fall behind, they also opened a branch dedicated exclusively to video games. And they were not exactly small: in the final half of 1982, they earned 74 million dollars thanks to their Star Wars games or this Spider-man, and somehow became giants in the industry, although they gradually abandoned it.
The challenge was not small: to take a character with 20 years of history (and quite a convoluted one, too) and turn him not only into a comic book hero but also into a pixelated one. For this, they enlisted the help of Marvel and created an alternative story in which Norman Osborn becomes the Green Goblin again and escapes from prison with the intention of blowing up the Empire State Building with a super bomb. Will he be able to catch him before he succeeds? Well, that’s where the player comes in: the whole game involves climbing a building, disarming bombs, and fighting against some enemies that appear randomly without falling.
Ah, yes: in addition, you had a fluid meter to make webs (with which you could move between different parts of the building), and if you ran out of it, you would fall to the ground and lose a life. The classic Parker luck. The curious thing is that the game’s director, Laura Nikolich had no intention of ending up making video games. In fact, she studied computer programming and ended up working at a nuclear plant programming the systems. In other words, a fully-fledged nuclear engineer… until Atari contacted her. Partly to meet a female quota, and partly because she was one of the few people at that time who really knew how to program.
In fact, he had absolute creative control, and even before his death in 2024, he claimed that this was the best stage of his life. However, he wasn’t necessarily a fan of comics: if the Green Goblin appeared in the game, it wasn’t because he was a Marvel fan, but because it was much easier to include him as a character, since he used the same algorithm as Spider-Man. Believe it or not, it was a huge success, and Atari 2600 fans still hold it dear in their hearts.
And so, if she managed to make it big, did Nikolich, our favorite gaming nuclear engineer, have a long career in video games? Well… As you might guess from the date, no. In 1983, E.T caused the industry crash, and she was one of the first to be let go from the offices, while working on a Care Bears game that would never see the light of day, according to her, because of marketing. We only heard from her once more, in 1984, when she directed the ColecoVision version of Frogger II. From there, she disappeared. Well, more or less: two of her children work in the industry, one at DICE and another at Bungie. In the end, the pixels as fists were worth something more than just a good memory.
James Cameron, the renowned director of the Avatar saga, revealed that his vision for a Spider-Man movie preceded Sam Raimi’s successful adaptation, which starred Tobey Maguire. His approach promised a unique treatment of the iconic superhero, presenting the webs as an extension of Peter Parker’s own body, rather than the mythical artificial webs that characterize Spider-Man in the more well-known adaptations.
Spider-Cameron
Cameron always considered Spider-Man as a metaphor and intended to implement significant changes to the original story, for which he sought Stan Lee’s approval. However, the difficulty began with the character’s rights, which Marvel had sold to Cannon Films. This company, which never managed to make the film, ended up going bankrupt. Cameron unsuccessfully tried to get other production companies, including Carolco Pictures, to acquire the rights; when he approached 20th Century Fox, the door was also closed, as the company did not want to get involved in legal disputes over the rights.
Despite his deep interest in the project and recognizing its commercial potential, Cameron had to resign himself to the lack of opportunities. In his account, the director mentioned: “That could be worth, I don’t know, 1 billion dollars. 10 billion later…” Learning from this experience, Cameron decided to focus on his own franchises, which led to his successful career in science fiction cinema with ‘Avatar’. This decision marked a significant shift in his creative approach after the commercial success of ‘Titanic’, where he considered it was time to focus on his own material.
Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in American comics. Outside of Batman and Superman, there is probably no other character more recognized, loved, and adored around the planet. And there are plenty of reasons for it. With a rich and deep story, with comics that continue to this day and numerous adaptations for different generations, Marvel has done an excellent job of making him our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Spider-Man is one of the most beloved characters in American comics. Outside of Batman and Superman, there is probably no other character more recognized, loved, and adored around the globe. And there are plenty of reasons for that. With a rich and deep story, with comics that continue to this day and numerous adaptations for different generations, Marvel has done an excellent job of making him our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
That doesn’t change the fact that neither Marvel nor Disney+ is the big beneficiary of its time in theaters. Not in modern times. Because if you want to watch Spider-Man streaming, we fear it has been more difficult than it should have been for a long time. At least until the man in red decided to get to work and bring us our favorite spider. Because Spider-Man is coming home for Christmas.
Spider-Man arrives with all his movies to streaming
The first movie to arrive in the HBO Max catalog on December 22 is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. An animated film directed by Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, and Bob Persichetti that surprised both fans and newcomers for several reasons. The first is that this Spider-Man was not Peter Parker, but the more recent Miles Morales. The other is that it took place in a comic book line that has been very popular in recent years: the Spider-Verse.
For the uninitiated, the Spider-Verse is a comic book series published since 2014, featuring Spider-Mans from different universes within the continuity of Marvel comics. This means that there are all kinds of Spider-Man, with all kinds of unique characteristics, something that had been explored previously in Spider-Man comics, but which began to be exploited more methodically starting with this comic book series.
With Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, they wanted to bring this to the big screen with a movie that not only introduced as many different Spider-Men as possible but also featured a striking and very dynamic visual style. And they succeeded. With a vibrant and very unique style, this movie cost 90 million dollars and managed to gross over 384 million dollars, becoming one of the most beloved and appreciated Spider-Man films to date.
So much so that even the critics surrendered at its feet. Winning the Award for Best Animated Feature at the Annie Awards, the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Oscars, it was the big winner of 2018 among live-action and animated films. Demonstrating that there were still many things to do with Spider-Man.
Three for the MCU and a much-anticipated return
But Spider-Man doesn’t end here for Christmas. On the 24th, to have the best possible Christmas plans, the three most recent movies of the web-slinger will arrive on the streaming service Max: Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Directed by John Watts, the three films need no introduction. Although they cost 200 million dollars each, they made ten times their budget at the box office and were a tremendous success for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, who made a joint investment in these films to allow Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. With Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ, they have already become three films that, for an entire generation, are synonymous with Spider-Man.
The next movie in the franchise, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is scheduled to be released on July 31, 2026, and we only know one concrete detail: this time it will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. This also explains why this trilogy is now coming to streaming services.
On December 27, just in time to close the year, we will get the last of the Spider-Man movies we were missing, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. A sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, directed this time by Joaquim dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson, and which expands the premise of the original by having Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy travel through the entire Multiverse to save the rest of Spider-Man from a threat that could jeopardize their existence.
Thanks to the success of the previous film, its budget swelled to 150 million dollars, but with the audience already familiar with the movie, they also responded better. Achieving over 690 million dollars at the box office, it was one of the big successes of 2023, being considered by critics as the best animated film of the year and even one of the best films of the year, overall.
With a sequel in development, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled to be released on June 25, 2027, we will still have to wait to see the continuation of the stories of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. But in the meantime, thanks to Max, we have a fantastic way to spend this Christmas.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton announced the wrap of filming with a message of gratitude towards Holland, whom he described as a generous leader both on and off screen. I appreciate your tireless work ethic and contributions, Cretton expressed, highlighting the actor’s dedication during the production. This collaboration seems to have resulted in a positive creative environment, which is crucial in a project of such magnitude.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ promises to offer new adventures and challenges for young Peter Parker, but details about the plot are still kept under strict secrecy. The movie could explore themes related to identity and family relationships, thus connecting with the previous sequels that have built the character’s story.
Spider-Man fans are eager to see how this new installment will unfold, especially after previous successes like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, which surprised audiences with its innovative approach and the appearance of characters from different timelines. With the filming of ‘Brand New Day’ now complete, the focus is now on post-production and the future promotion of the film, which will surely attract the attention not only of comic book enthusiasts but also of the general public when it hits theaters.

This is how Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield took the helm for ‘The Amazing Spider-man’, marking a considerable change in the superhero’s narrative.
A rejection that broke his heart
In the midst of this process, a name that emerged in the race for the role was Josh Hutcherson, known for his starring role in ‘The Hunger Games’. In a recent interview, Hutcherson revealed that he was close to becoming the iconic Spider-Man. “A few months before I was cast in ‘The Hunger Games’, I was in the running to be Spider-Man,” he commented, adding that receiving the rejection left him “emotionally shocked.”
Hutcherson’s journey in Hollywood has been a rollercoaster, marked by ups and downs. He acknowledged that throughout his career, he has faced the uncertainty of opportunities that quickly fade away. “As soon as they are excited to put you in the spotlight, the opportunities vanish,” he expressed, reflecting the harsh reality of the film industry.
Undoubtedly, a version of ‘Spider-man: No Way Home’ with Hutcherson instead of Garfield could have changed the direction of the franchise. However, at 33 years old, the actor has come to terms with the fact that he won’t always land the desired role, which has led him to seek new opportunities in his career. Similarly, the industry has begun to adapt, shifting away from focusing on character origins, which represents a smart change in Hollywood’s narrative.
Magic: The Gathering is already 50% its own universe and 50% other licenses. It’s something we already know and that won’t change, at least until 2030. After Spider-Man and Final Fantasy, this year we still had another collection that takes us to another universe. This time, one with more magic than the first, although perhaps a little less than the second. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not filled with elementals, exotic animals, and all kinds of fantasy entities. Because it’s about Avatar: The Last Airbender. This is not the one with the blue aliens

If you are not familiar with this Nickelodeon series, it was created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and is an American action and fantasy series inspired by Southeast Asian culture. In it, some people are able to telekinetically manipulate the four elements (water, earth, fire, and air) to blend them with their martial arts. Each nation in the world is represented by one of these elements and people who master it, but only one person in the world can master all four at the same time: this person is called the Avatar.
Avatar: The Last Airbender had three seasons and a sequel, The Legend of Korra, telling us not only about the evolution of the Avatar, Aang, but also how he shapes the world and the conflicts that occur within it. Placing great importance on the characters and their internal conflicts, the series stands out for both its dynamic and vibrant battles and the evolution of the characters, who gain depth with each episode.
All of this materializes in this new collection of Magic cards with a special emphasis on two things: the characters and the elements. The first is something we already expected. All the most beloved characters from both series appear in card form, often in different versions. The second is represented in a new, very peculiar mechanic called bending, with four variants based on each of the four elements.
Airbending allows you to exile any number of nonland permanents and return them to the battlefield for two colorless mana. Earthbending turns a land into a creature with haste with as many +1/+1 counters as the number of earthbending and returns to being a land when it dies or is exiled. Firebending adds red mana until the end of the combat phase if the creature attacked this turn. And waterbending allows you to use different abilities by paying with tapped artifacts or creatures instead of paying the colorless mana cost of the ability. All abilities are closely related to both the series and the logic of Magic: The Gathering.
Also, due to the nature of the series itself, the collection will have numerous sagas. Furthermore, those that return to the battlefield transformed into creatures. And considering that, historically, these have been especially powerful and played, it is to be expected that they will find a place in competitive tables.
In other respects, it’s your classic collection of Magic: The Gathering. Except now there is even more product to choose from. With commander bundles, for those who play Commander, beginner boxes, for those who want to start playing Magic with this collection, and scene boxes, for those who are collectors and want beautiful art, in addition to all the usual products, there is an Avatar product for everyone.
Even so, we will have to wait for that. Avatar: The Last Airbender will not hit stores until next November 21. But we are left with the curiosity of how the collection will be when we finally have it in our hands.
Magic: The Gathering Arena is a free online card game for Windows developed by Wizards of the Coast. Magic is undoubtedly one of the most important and iconic collectible card games, with millions of players worldwide and official competitions with great prizes. Now, thanks to Magic: The Gathering Arena, you can enjoy this card game on your computer for free.

A beat’em up that makes you feel like a Marvel character
Marvel Cosmic Invasion will feature an appealing cast of 15 playable heroes, highlighting two iconic characters that fans did not expect: Phoenix and the Invincible Iron Man. Alongside them, players will be able to choose from other iconic superheroes such as Captain America, Wolverine, and Spider-Man, while battling Annihilus and his minions in an environment reminiscent of the streets of New York.
One of the most innovative features of the game is the mechanic called Cosmic Swap, which allows players to switch between two heroes per level, making it easier to chain combos and abilities smoothly. The pixel art graphic style not only evokes classic arcade games but also provides a vibrant and nostalgic visual experience.
In addition, Marvel Cosmic Invasion will offer a local and online cooperative mode for up to four players, with cross-play options and accessibility settings to ensure that all players can enjoy the title. First impressions have been positive, with critics praising its exciting gameplay and its faithful homage to the Marvel universe.
As if that weren’t enough, a demo of the game is already available for free on Steam, providing interested players the opportunity to try it out before its release. Although plans for additional content after the launch have not yet been confirmed, it is suggested that the studio could explore this possibility if the game receives a good reception in the market. Expectations are high, and many see Marvel Cosmic Invasion as an opportunity to revitalize 2D superhero games, making it one of the most anticipated titles of the season.

Unattainable poses for flesh-and-blood human beings
Recently, the famous cartoonist Todd McFarlane revealed some interesting details about the movie during a conversation with the American media The Pop Verse. McFarlane emphasized that Raimi tried to make Spider-Man imitate the distinctive poses of his own version of the character. However, the technical difficulties were so great that even the most skilled contortionists from Cirque du Soleil could not replicate them. This highlights Raimi’s artistic ambition in seeking to minimize the use of digital effects in favor of a more realistic and visceral representation.
Despite these challenges, Raimi did not give up. The film, which became famous for iconic scenes, such as the iconic image of Spider-Man shooting webs, underwent rewrites due to the impossibility of convincingly portraying certain human postures. Nowadays, with broader access to highly specialized talents, it might be easier to find among current actors someone capable of executing these complex poses, but at the time, the film managed to maintain the essence of the comics, establishing itself as one of the most successful superhero sagas of all time.
With the growing interest in the Marvel universe, many are wondering if Spider-Man has the role that the MCU has been missing for ten years. Despite this, the legacy of Raimi’s trilogy remains undeniable and continues to resonate in today’s pop culture.

In a recent revelation, Shawn Layden, former head of PlayStation, shared an intriguing detail about the creative process behind one of the console’s most iconic titles: Shadow of the Colossus. To impress Sony executives during the initial presentation of the game, the Team Ico team used music that, unbeknownst to them at the time, belonged to the theme of the movie Spider-Man by Sam Raimi, released in 2002.
Colossus, Colossus, does whatever a Colossus does
This matter has been revealed in an article titled Shadow of the Colossus: An oral history, where Layden mentions that, although the memorable melody never made it into the final product, its use as reference music could have violated certain usage rights. However, Layden believes that, since it happened 20 years ago and Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man, “there was no long-term damage.”
Shadow of the Colossus is known for its monumental scale and evocative cinematography, elements that were complemented by a soundtrack that highlights key moments and evokes heroism, although the player’s actions often sit in ambiguous morality. The music masterfully accompanies the most significant moments of the game, becoming a fundamental pillar of its experience.
Additionally, it has been revealed that a game seemingly unrelated to this concept, Battlefield 1942, served as an unexpected inspiration for the creation of Shadow of the Colossus. The idea of cooperation to face giants translated into the impressive journey that became a classic of PlayStation 2, setting a precedent in the design of narrative and visual video games.
