You can no longer access Twitter without an account: Elon Musk has won

Don’t trust corporations, especially those where an egomaniac holds all the power. Use open-source solutions…

An open-source project that allowed viewing tweets without having to go to the website or app has closed down, as Elon Musk’s changes seem to have closed all possible ways to access the Twitter network without an account.

Nitter offered an alternative front-end to Twitter, but it has been causing trouble for months. Nitter.net, the official instance of Nitter, stopped working a few weeks ago.

“Nitter has come to an end: it has been a fun journey. Twitter blocked the last known way to access its network without a user account,” said the NoLog update.

Users reported that many instances of Nitter stopped working about eight months ago, when Twitter (now called X) imposed new restrictions on the API. Some instances remained online with temporary solutions, which no longer work.

“Most Nitter servers used a technique that involved generating lots of temporary tokens to access the content, but now that route is also blocked,” says the NoLog update.

Twitter limited “any access that cannot be monetized” and NoLog says that their service Nitter was designed to maintain user privacy.

As for what Nitter users should do now, the NoLog post had a recommendation: “Do not trust corporations, especially those where an egomaniac has all the power. Use open-source and community-driven solutions if you can (like Mastodon)”.

X (Twitter) seems to have a problem as it is hiring a lot of moderators

After the numerous layoffs that Elon Musk has carried out on his social network since he bought it, now X, the former Twitter, will once again expand its team of moderators to tackle illegal, harmful or dangerous content for the normal functioning of the application. In this way, the company seeks to address a problem that has grown due to the lack of employees.

These employees would be hired to moderate in a new headquarters in Austin, Texas, and there would be up to 100 positions open to work extensively on content moderation and ensure that user posts comply with the current policies and regulations in X.

Problems with illegal content

As Bloomberg reports, X wants to increase its workforce by a total of 100 people to strengthen the content moderation department, which is currently overwhelmed by the proliferation of illegal, harmful, or toxic content within the application. Harmful or toxic comments have always existed in the application, but the increase in harmful content is raising concerns.

Among other types of illegal content, X is detecting a significant increase in the dissemination of content ranging from full movies and series to photos and videos of sexual abuse, child pornography, and explicit violence, among others. As reflected in the application’s policies, not only are these types of content often criminal offenses, but they also cannot be allowed within the application.

AI’s and hate also wreak havoc

These are the most serious problems regarding moderation, and the severity of the content that company employees will have to view when they have to discard such images or videos that may be seen in the application is clear. But there are more problems in this aspect, since hate speeches have also increased, and AI-generated content, such as deepfakes, is also causing havoc on social networks.

It is evident that, in current times, Internet content can be very dangerous if there is no moderation or mediation by providers. Therefore, it remains to be seen if X will soon be able to make the content available within the application go through a more severe moderation and curation than before.

X, the former Twitter, announces a new way to log in

X, the social network currently owned by Elon Musk, is looking to take a new leap in terms of security by enabling a new login system. In this way, the platform formerly known as Twitter will have a passkey system that will prevent users who choose this login method from being hacked.

Currently, this functionality is only available in the United States and on iOS systems, and if it works as expected, it is possible that later on this feature will be launched globally so that all users can have this safer method of login.

Passkeys for iOS in the United States

This new system, for the moment, is being tested only on iOS devices in the US, but, as the company explains, this feature will eventually reach the rest of users, allowing security to make its way into this application, frequently accused of bot abuse and suffering numerous hacks and thefts of various accounts.

In addition, at the moment, there is no mention that this feature is only for X Premium users, so if the company doesn’t change its mind, it is most likely that this service can be beneficial for all users, both free and paid. This is something important to consider, taking into account that security has a fundamental value, and it is above the premium functionalities that a service can offer.

X’s Swings

For better or for worse, this beginning of the year is being less eventful for X than the year 2023 or the end of 2022. The service, for the first time in a long time, is no longer the protagonist so that, once again, the contents regain weight within the application. However, this does not mean that, in a year, the service of the application has undergone a substantial change.

For example, all the branding around what was previously Twitter was completely eliminated last summer of 2023. The paid subscriptions, after several changes, seem to have settled with three different categories, depending on the amount of premium features the user wants to have, but, despite everything, it was also known in recent weeks that the company’s value is much lower than when Elon Musk completed the purchase of the company in 2022.

We have news about Spyro, the most beloved dragon in the world of video games

We have news about Spyro, the most beloved dragon in the gaming world, and while we can’t confirm anything, it seems like they’re good news.

Many franchises born in the heat of the 32-bit era lie half asleep. Classic titles from the era of the first PlayStation do not receive new games even if the nostalgia factor makes them highly valued and remembered by the general public. Something that makes this absence even more noticeable, and absurd.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy DOWNLOAD

Among all those franchises, one of the most outstanding is Spyro the Dragon. Born in 1998 by Insomniac Games, it is a platform and adventure game starring a purple dragon named Spyro, who would go on to have up to ten main titles. Winning the affection of several generations and becoming an icon of PlayStation, perhaps not at the level of Mario or Sonic, but not too far from that.

Now, Spyro’s official Twitter page has posted a tweet that has promised us to stay tuned for the future of the franchise. Because under the message “2024 slogan” they have uploaded an image of Spyro with the message “you must believe” written on it. This has made many people think that the young dragon is going to return in the form of a new video game.

While we don’t have concrete reasons to believe this is true, there are reasons to be optimistic. The license is currently in the hands of Activision Blizzard, which was recently acquired by Microsoft, and the last game in the franchise was in 2018 with Reignited Trilogy, a remake of the three original games in the saga that performed well. So it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that they may have decided to give this PlayStation classic a new life.

Again, nothing is confirmed. And if confirmed, we shouldn’t rule out the possibility that the new Spyro could be exclusive to Xbox. But in the meantime, we can always dream of a new installment of our favorite video game dragon.

Elon Musk has lost $32 billion dollars – can you guess why?

Elon Musk is the richest man in the world, according to Forbes, with a net worth of $251 billion. When he acquired Twitter, he said…

When Elon Musk bought Twitter, many celebrated it. It was a company that offered losses every year and some investors wanted a charismatic and daring leader. Unfortunately, Elon Musk has turned out to be the worst possible owner.

X (Twitter) DOWNLOAD

Problematic, bully, disrespectful, irrational, etc. Elon Musk’s attitude at the helm of Twitter can be summed up in one word: chaos. This made him trust someone else to act as CEO of the company a few months ago, but the decisions are still up to the owner of Tesla and SpaceX.

Since its arrival, Twitter has not stopped devaluing in the markets. And if a few months ago it was worth half of what it cost at the time (it paid 44 billion for the company), now it is not even worth 30% of its price in 2022.

A 71% drop in the stock market in just one year

Fidelity, which holds a stake in X Holdings (Twitter’s parent company), said in a disclosure obtained by Axios that it had marked down the value of its shares by 71.5% since the purchase from Musk.

Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022 and renamed the platform as X in July 2023. Fidelity’s estimate would place the value of X at around $12.5 billion.

In its revealing data, the monthly number of X users dropped by 15% in the first year since Musk’s acquisition, amid concerns about the increase in hate speech on the platform.

X (Twitter) DOWNLOAD

Since the acquisition by Musk, X has cut at least 50% of its workforce and reduced moderation. And in September, the European Union issued a warning to Musk after discovering that X was the biggest disinformation platform among all major social networks.

The revised valuation of X by Fidelity came from a disclosure that extended until late November 2023, Axios reported.

That revelation would cover the consequences of several major companies withdrawing their advertising on X after Musk supported an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. Musk responded to the boycott by telling the companies “to fuck off” during an interview at an event in New York.

Elon Musk is the richest man in the world, according to Forbes, with a net worth of $251 billion. When he acquired Twitter, Musk said he was buying the company “to try to help humanity.”

Since its acquisition, Elon Musk has reinstated several people to the platform whom he had previously banned, including former President Donald Trump and right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Elon Musk’s drift, without clear ideas and with measures that users do not approve, is costing the life of the social network that amazed the world during the last decade.

The European Union takes the step: the battle against Elon Musk and Twitter begins

The Commission’s measures are a consequence of a risk assessment report presented by X in September that didn’t seem to convince…

We talked about this a few weeks ago. And the situation between the European Union and Twitter (now X) was very tense, with threats from both sides. The EU accuses Twitter of being a social network that only promotes misinformation, Elon Musk denies it.

Twitter DOWNLOAD

The European Commission has announced the opening of a formal infringement procedure regarding the operation of X and possible violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, made a sarcastic comment about X, detailing the alleged non-compliance by the platform with its obligations of transparency and fight against illegal content. The possible “deceptive design” of X is also being investigated.

A war that comes from afar

In February 2023, all online services operating in the EU were required to declare their size to determine if they were a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP).

A VLOP is any platform with more than 45 million users throughout the EU. Any company designated as a VLOP had four months to comply with the DSA. These measures include establishing a specific point of contact, transparency in advertising and content moderation, and clear and user-friendly conditions.

It also requires identifying and mitigating risks such as illegal content, gender-based violence, and child protection. Other logistical stipulations include allowing authorized researchers access to data that informs about systemic risks in the EU, sharing data with the Commission, and undergoing an annual independent audit.

The Commission’s measures are a result of a risk assessment report presented by X in September, a transparency report published by the platform in November, and the concern raised by the way X manages -or mismanages, in its case- content about the war between Israel and Hamas.

Thierry Breton sent a letter to Elon Musk regarding the platform’s responsibility to moderate messages in accordance with the DSA. And shortly after, the European Union has opened an investigation into the management of X.

Grok, Elon Musk’s AI, shamelessly plagiarizes ChatGPT

Grok went on sale last week and users have already started to detect bugs everywhere.

Last November, Elon Musk publicly announced the release of Grok, a “mischievous” chatbot positioned as the new competitor to challenge ChatGPT. After a short wait, the model developed by xAI was launched for sale last week, and users have already begun to detect numerous flaws.

Grok DOWNLOAD

Jax Winterbourne, a security tester, posted a screenshot on their X profile showing Grok denying a task, accompanied by a concerning message: “I’m afraid I cannot fulfill that request as it goes against OpenAI’s usage policy.” Even though Grok isn’t associated with OpenAI or ChatGPT, why did the company’s name appear in that warning?

The explanation provided by Grok’s developers is simple. Igor Babuschkin, an xAI employee, responded to Winterbourne stating that the web contains “copious” results directly extracted from ChatGPT. When gathering internet data to train Grok, these were inadvertently incorporated. Babuschkin mentioned this came as a surprise when they first noticed it: “For what it’s worth, the issue is very peculiar, and now that we’re aware of it, we’ll ensure future versions of Grok won’t have this problem.” And just to be clear, the employee concluded by affirming that “no OpenAI code was used in Grok’s development.”

However, this explanation doesn’t satisfy the experts. Simon Willison, an AI researcher, explains that he has previously seen this behavior in other language models. According to Willison, it’s highly likely that Grok “has been fine-tuned with datasets generated through OpenAI APIs or extracted from ChatGPT itself.”

At this stage, one could say that AI is feeding itself. As language models have become more capable, it has become increasingly common to fine-tune these models with synthetic data, generated by artificial intelligence. This incident has further fueled the rivalry between OpenAI and X, a conflict that Musk initiated with his constant criticisms of Sam Altman’s company.

The mayor of Paris has referred to Twitter as a “global sewer”

The Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has permanently left X (formerly known as Twitter), or at least that’s what she has implied through a post on her official X profile. In this statement, Hidalgo strongly asserts that X is a “weapon of mass destruction of our democracies.”

Twitter DOWNLOAD

Anne Hidalgo explains in her statement that despite having been “one of the first French politicians to join,” continuous abuses and disparagement have led her to leave the social network. In her post, she continues to list the reasons for her departure (which are not few) and talks about the “manipulation, misinformation, amplification of hate, organized harassment, antisemitism, and racism” that proliferate on X. She also points out the “packs that attack scientists, climatologists, women, environmentalists, and progressives.” She adds that the platform “damages the image and sovereignty of our democracies by seeking to destabilize them.”

For Hidalgo, X (or Twitter, as she calls it) has become a “weapon of mass destruction of our democracies.” Below, we leave her statement for you to appreciate in all its glory.

In her statement, she also laid into Elon Musk, the current owner of X, accusing him of having transformed the social network into something much worse (“acts deliberately to stir up tensions and conflicts“). According to Hidalgo, “the noise generated by fake news will always be much louder than the echo of a well-founded truth.” The mayor is quite blunt and describes X as a “global sewer.”

To conclude, in her writing she quotes Martin Luther King, with his phrase “we must learn to live together as brothers, or we will perish together as fools.” Do you think Anne Hidalgo is right in her argument?

Elon Musk laughs at the biggest crisis of AI in its history… Using a Spanish meme

The tycoon has used his own platform, X, to laugh at the OpenAI crisis in Andalusian ways.

By now, you might think you’ve seen everything. However, reality always surpasses fiction, especially when it involves Elon Musk. The magnate has used his own platform, X, to poke fun at OpenAI’s crisis in some Andalusian ways.

Through a post shared on his X profile, Musk has used El Risitas to mock OpenAI‘s situation. Yes, just as you read. Below, we’ve included the post so you can appreciate it in all its glory.

As often happens in these situations, user reactions have been abundant, each one more original than the last. However, the award for the best response probably went to Andalucía Directo. The legendary Andalusian program replied to Musk’s post, demanding nothing less than compensation for image rights. The excerpt used belonged to “Ratones Coloraos,” an interview format hosted by Jesús Quintero and aired on Canal Sur in the early 2000s.

OpenAI and the dismissal of Sam Altman

The unexpected dismissal of Sam Altman and the departure of Greg Brockman have not left anyone indifferent. Following these departures, Emmett Shear (co-founder of Twitch) has been appointed as the new interim CEO. On the other hand, Altman’s unemployment didn’t last long, as Microsoft ended up hiring him to lead a new research team focused on artificial intelligence.

Like a house of cards, this seismic event at the top of OpenAI has ended up affecting its employees. Up to 505 workers have threatened to leave the company if Altman and Brockman are not reinstated, and they’re also demanding the resignation of the board of directors. However, new negotiations between the board and Altman might lead to the latter’s return as the CEO of OpenAI.

Better shots than retweets: 'Fortnite' is now worth more than Twitter

What would you do if you had $44 billion left over? Elon Musk seems to have it clear: he bought Twitter so he could play with it.

The day Elon Musk walked into Twitter’s offices with a sink in his hands marked the beginning of the infamy that has led to the downfall of the once indispensable social network as a series of blunders, from the removal of the circles to the placement of a giant illuminated ‘X’ that polluted the luminosity of the rest of San Francisco. And all of this… only to end up losing an enormous amount of money.

Twitter DOWNLOAD

An epic investment

What would you do if you had an extra $44 billion? Elon Musk seems to have known exactly what to do: he bought Twitter so he could play with it. A year later, it is estimated that the social network is worth between 50% and 90% less (i.e., between $4 billion and $19 billion). The truth probably lies in the middle, around $15 billion, which is less than the current value of Epic Games, the developer of ‘Fortnite.

And after a financing round where they raised -attention- an additional $1.78 billion, right now it’s worth $17.3 billion (and rising). So, if Musk, instead of wanting to argue, had wanted to shoot to vent, he might have made one of the best investments in history.

223 million people use ‘Fortnite’ monthly compared to the 528 million who do the same on Twitter. However, Twitter Blue can’t compete, not by a long shot, in popularity with Epic’s microtransactions. Perhaps in the future, the strategy of the world’s richest person will succeed, and we’ll be using the social network of the former little bird to access our bank and do everything he wants us to do, but it doesn’t seem likely.

On the other hand, ‘Fortnite’ was not, like other pandemic games (eh, ‘Fall Guys’?), a one-day wonder, and even now, it is at its peak of popularity. The Gen Z throwing the floss dance in the face of the old folks. We brought it upon ourselves, truth be told.
