The launch of Rise of the Ronin, one of Team Ninja’s most ambitious titles, has generated mixed reactions among PC players following its recent arrival on Steam. This open-world action RPG, which has been acclaimed in its PlayStation 5 version, has faced a series of technical challenges that have led many to criticize its performance on Valve’s platform.

A game with a successful launch… that has plummeted

The most notable problems reported by users include stuttering, crashes, and a significant loss of saved games, which has made the gaming experience frustrating for those who were expecting a successful launch. In its first month on Steam, Rise of the Ronin reached a peak of only 12,700 simultaneous players, a figure that has drastically decreased, currently leaving only 856 concurrent users.

In the face of a wave of criticism, Team Ninja has issued a statement via social media apologizing for the inconveniences and committing to release a patch on April 10 aimed at addressing these issues. However, the details about which specific aspects will be addressed have not yet been revealed, leaving the community in suspense.

This setback is not new for Team Ninja; the developer has faced similar situations in the past with other titles like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Ninja Gaiden: The Master Collection, raising questions about their ability to optimize ports for PC. In this context, the upcoming patch is expected to alleviate some of the players’ concerns and improve the game’s situation on the platform.

Valve has demonstrated remarkable financial performance, generating more revenue per employee than Apple and competing strongly with giants like Amazon. This has become a central topic in the video game industry, highlighting Valve’s ability to maintain strong business relationships. Monica Harrington, former executive and the company’s first marketing director, emphasizes in recent statements the importance of trust in the industry to ensure long-term success.

Trust: an important part of any business

During a post-talk interview at GDC 2025, Harrington shared her experiences on how a lack of enthusiasm for certain projects can lead to their cancellation. She recalled her time at Microsoft, where, after assessing the lack of good reviews for a game in development, she felt compelled to ask the key question: β€œAre you sure?”. This kind of honest approach is, according to Harrington, essential for maintaining credibility within the industry.

Valve’s commitment to transparency is reflected even in its approach to new projects. The constant assessment of evaluators’ enthusiasm is key; if critics do not show enthusiasm, that could mean the end of a game before its release. “It is crucial to notify the subtle currents in the perception of the game,” Harrington noted, which could be decisive for success in marketing.

Harrington also highlighted that many marketing experts come from the field of public relations, who are able to pick up on those subtle signals that can influence the direction of a project. His call for honesty and the safeguarding of credibility suggests that, in such a competitive environment, success is not only measured by numbers, but by the ability to genuinely connect with the audience and adapt to their reactions.
