The creator of Final Fantasy Tactics apologizes for the lack of languages in the new remaster of the game, stating that he will fight for their inclusion

The recent remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics and Octopath Traveller 0 has generated discontent among fans, as both titles lack a Spanish translation. This decision by Square Enix limits access for a significant segment of players who do not master other languages such as Japanese, English, German, or French. Despite being considered classics of the JRPG genre, language barriers could affect the commercial performance of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. The recent remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics and Octopath Traveller 0 has generated discontent among fans, as neither title has a Spanish translation. This decision by Square Enix limits access for a significant segment of players who do not master other languages such as Japanese, English, German, or French. Despite being considered classics of the JRPG genre, language barriers could affect the commercial performance of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles.

Matsuno always fighting for the players

Yasumi Matsuno, original director of Final Fantasy Tactics, has addressed this issue on his Twitter account, apologizing for the lack of support in Spanish. Matsuno, who has worked as a writer and script supervisor on this remaster, has expressed that he has communicated to Square Enix the need to include more languages to broaden access to the game. Although he cannot guarantee when this translation will be implemented, he urged fans to be patient while the situation is reviewed.

This is not the first time that players have encountered a lack of support in their language, so many point to Sega and Capcom as positive examples, as they have successfully translated several of their titles into Spanish, including the iconic games of the Yakuza series and the Ace Attorney franchise. This suggests that Square Enix has the opportunity to improve its image through similar decisions.

Meanwhile, the gaming community has taken the initiative, creating their own translations and dubbings of other titles such as Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts, highlighting the dedication of fans to fill the void left by the developers. The lack of an official translation could be a significant oversight that Square Enix will need to consider in future releases.

The remastering of one of the most beloved titles in the Final Fantasy saga, titled Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, will be released on September 30 for PC and consoles, offering a new opportunity for fans and new players to enjoy this classic. However, the development process has been a true challenge, as there were no original data or source code of the game, which forced the developers to rebuild it from scratch.

It’s hard to remake a game when you have to do it from scratch

Kazutoyo Maehiro, project director, explained in a recent interview that, due to common practices at the time, the data of the original game was overwritten every time it was localized for a new language. This fact meant that the team had to analyze different existing versions of the title and, at times, play the original game to intuitively capture its essence. Maehiro emphasized that “each challenge stemmed from this lack of master data, which contrasts with current standards of video game preservation.”

The remastered version will include a modern user interface, full voice acting, dialogues added by the original writer and director Yasumi Matsuno, autosaves, and adjustable battle speed. For those who prefer the classic aesthetic, there will be a mode that maintains the original graphics but revokes several of the new features implemented.

The balance between attracting new players and satisfying fans of the original game has been a priority. Maehiro commented that, while some believe that remasters should not go overboard, the team considers it essential to offer both an accessible enhanced version and an option that resembles more closely the game that millions of fans adored at its original launch.

With its expected arrival in September, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles promises to be a renewed experience that pays homage to its legacy.

No Rest for the Wicked is clear: ARPGs must give up on attributes

Thomas Mahler, co-founder of Moon Studios, has made a significant announcement regarding his game No Rest for the Wicked. No Rest for the Wicked is clear: ARPGs must give up on attributes

Thomas Mahler, co-founder of Moon Studios, has made a significant announcement regarding his game No Rest for the Wicked. After a recent problematic update, the studio has decided to remove the attribute system from the game, an approach that the developers believed would align their title with other games in the Souls-like genre. However, Mahler revealed that player data clearly showed that this system was no longer effective and was causing confusion.

In an extensive Twitter post, Mahler commented that attributes such as health and stamina became an obstacle in the gaming experience, leading to a reevaluation of how character progression and customization should be managed. “Making stats equally important is literally equivalent to giving players a rope to hang themselves,” he stated, alluding to the way players often confuse having a higher-level character with possessing more powerful attributes.

The co-founder also emphasized that, unlike Souls games, where statistics are not the main focus, the new system that Moon Studios is developing will aim to be much more intuitive. Instead of implementing rushed changes, Mahler stressed the need for thorough testing before the new system is launched as an update. “We want to ensure that leveling up is incredibly addictive and that each upgrade allows players to make satisfying decisions,” he stated. Drawing inspiration from the creative approaches of Final Fantasy 12 director, Yasumi Matsuno, the studio aims to reinvent the character progression process.

Mahler’s commitment to improving and adapting the game demonstrates his dedication to providing a smoother and more satisfying user experience. Meanwhile, the gaming community eagerly awaits the changes that could revitalize No Rest for the Wicked.
