Argonaut Games announces the return of a cult classic from Nintendo 64 that you don't remember

Argonaut Games, the original developer of the memorable title Buck Bumble, has suggested a possible return of the game, presenting it as the new “mascot” of 4/20. This announcement, made through a post on Bluesky, marks a milestone in the history of a game that, despite its place in the hearts of some players, never reached the status of an undisputed classic during its release on the N64. “Right about now Buck Bumble is officially your new wholesome 4/20 mascot,” reads the post, accompanied by a clip of the game’s melody that has gained notoriety as a […]

Argonaut Games announces the return of a cult classic from Nintendo 64 that you don't remember

Argonaut Games, the original developer of the beloved title Buck Bumble, has suggested a possible return of the game, presenting it as the new “mascot” for 4/20. This announcement, made through a post on Bluesky, marks a milestone in the history of a game that, despite its place in the hearts of some players, never reached the status of an undisputed classic during its release on the N64. “Right about now Buck Bumble is officially your new wholesome 4/20 mascot,” the post reads, accompanied by a clip of the game’s melody that has gained notoriety as a modern meme.

A bee with little success

Argonaut Games is acclaimed for its work on the original Star Fox for SNES, and after being revived in 2024, it has acted as a retro game publisher, recently releasing a remaster of Croc last year. This resurgence of lesser-known titles, such as Buck Bumble, raises questions about which games truly deserve a comeback in a nostalgia-saturated market.

Originally released in 1998, Buck Bumble received mixed reviews due to its unique concept of a “warrior bumblebee” fighting in a backyard environment. Although it did not become one of the top titles for the N64, it has come to be remembered for its catchy opening melody. Today, the decision to revive games like Buck Bumble may be driven by the growing trend of revisiting less conventional titles.

With the surge of remasterizations, many are wondering if Buck Bumble deserves a revival in the current context of video games. However, there are those who feel a connection to these unique games that offer different gameplay mechanics. In a landscape where “every game is someone’s favorite,” the future of Buck Bumble could be closer than ever, although it remains uncertain how such a return will unfold.

The iconic 1999 game, Darkstone, known for its hack-and-slash style, will come back to life with a remastered version called Darkstone Restoration.

This remaster is led by Paul Cuisset, the original creator, who aims to revitalize the experience of this title that has been forgotten by many over the years.

A cult video game

Among the promised improvements are greater stability, compatibility, interface readability, and refined controls. Additionally, Cuisset has mentioned the possibility of restoring important elements from the Darkstone legacy, such as a modernized network functionality and a new quest editor, although the latter will depend on the reception of the early access version in the market.

Darkstone, despite being considered a generic game in its genre, had unique features, such as the ability to play solo accompanied by an AI-controlled companion, as well as the management of hunger bars and character aging. This provided a more realistic and dynamic experience for players. However, the original title has faced significant issues in its currently available version, such as choppy music and a hard-to-read interface.

The decision to launch Darkstone Restoration in early access is unusual for a remaster, but it ensures that it will offer a complete gaming experience and not merely a prototype. Although an exact release date has not yet been announced, interested parties can keep track of the development through the Steam platform.

With this revitalization, Cuisset hopes to not only attract old fans of Darkstone, but also capture the attention of new generations of players in a competitive market, where remastered classics are on the rise.

"If we only wanted to make money, we would only release our games on Steam," says the CEO of one of the leading indie developers

The co-founder of New Blood Interactive, Dave Oshry, has shared his opinion on the financial viability of game distribution platforms, stating that Steam is undoubtedly the most profitable for the company.

In a recent conversation with RPG Site, Oshry emphasized that porting games to consoles is a complicated task that generates “much less” in sales compared to what they achieve through Steam. Despite this, the New Blood team continues to port their games to other platforms, but they do so mainly to satisfy their players.

What compensates the most is the PC and specifically, Steam

Oshry pointed out that the decision to bring their games to Xbox or PlayStation is not solely driven by financial interests, but by the desire to please the gaming community.

“We do it because our players want it, right?” expressed the co-founder. This dedication to fans highlights New Blood’s commitment not only to profitability but also to user experience.

A encouraging aspect for developers has been the reception of development kits for Nintendo’s new console, known as Switch 2. According to Oshry, this new kit is not drastically different from the previous one, which has allowed the studio to get their game Dusk running at 120fps with mouse controls. “Dusk on Switch 2 works great,” he stated, suggesting a good adaptation of the game to the new platform.

On another note, New Blood has decided to venture into the RPG genre with Dungeons of Dusk, an adaptation of their popular title Dusk. The demo is available for free as part of the Steam Next Fest, and the full game is expected to be released this year. Additionally, GOG reaffirms its commitment to game preservation, stating that “the future of preservation is decided by the players who care.”

A game with the DNA of Diablo 2

Speaking of new projects, Moon Beast Productions, made up of former Diablo 2 developers, is working on an RPG titled Darkhaven. This ambitious game will focus on procedurally generated sandbox worlds, promising features such as deformable terrain, mining, and mod support, along with options for solo play or massive multiplayer mode. Currently, Darkhaven’s Kickstarter campaign has raised $200,000 of a $500,000 goal, with 25 days left to reach the target.

Susan Hu, also co-founder of Moon Beast, expressed her mixed feelings about competing with her own past creations and Blizzard’s remastering. However, the developers have made it clear that their intention is not simply to recreate the Diablo experience, but to offer an innovative proposal that combines elements of modern survival games.

These initiatives highlight a vibrant cycle in the gaming industry, where legends of the past intertwine with future projects and player interest continues to grow.

Nigthdive Studios has established itself as a benchmark in the preservation of forgotten video games, facing significant challenges such as licensing disputes, loss of assets, and technological limitations. In an effort to revive classics from the past, the studio has remastered iconic titles like Heretic and Hexen, originally released in 1994 by Raven Software, making them accessible to modern audiences.

Pure fantasy from another era, today

The remastered edition of these games not only incorporates graphical improvements but also focuses on accessibility, a priority for Nightdive. With newly implemented features such as a map system and control customization options, the studio aims to meet the needs of fans and enhance the gaming experience based on user feedback.

Stephen Kick, founder and CEO of Nightdive, emphasizes that accessibility is “a key part” of the studio’s mission. “When we remaster a classic game, we not only make it more appealing; we also ensure that it can be enjoyed by as many people as possible,” he added. Among the new features is a points of interest system that facilitates navigation in the complex worlds of Heretic and Hexen, thus improving gameplay for new players.

In addition to advancements in accessibility, Nightdive is committed to continuing to refine its future titles, recognizing areas where there is room for improvement, such as offering tailored options for colorblind players. Through these initiatives, Nightdive not only helps to rescue titles from oblivion but also sets a precedent for how video games can evolve, maintaining their essence while adapting to current needs. In an industry where many games fall into obsolescence, Nightdive’s work represents a renewing hope.

The director of the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster confesses why it took them so long to do it: they had lost everything

The remastering of one of the most beloved titles in the Final Fantasy saga, titled Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, will be released on September 30 for PC and consoles, offering a new opportunity for fans and new players to enjoy this classic. However, the development process has been a true challenge, as there were no original data or source code of the game, which forced the developers to rebuild it from scratch.

It’s hard to remake a game when you have to do it from scratch

Kazutoyo Maehiro, project director, explained in a recent interview that, due to common practices at the time, the data of the original game was overwritten every time it was localized for a new language. This fact meant that the team had to analyze different existing versions of the title and, at times, play the original game to intuitively capture its essence. Maehiro emphasized that “each challenge stemmed from this lack of master data, which contrasts with current standards of video game preservation.”

The remastered version will include a modern user interface, full voice acting, dialogues added by the original writer and director Yasumi Matsuno, autosaves, and adjustable battle speed. For those who prefer the classic aesthetic, there will be a mode that maintains the original graphics but revokes several of the new features implemented.

The balance between attracting new players and satisfying fans of the original game has been a priority. Maehiro commented that, while some believe that remasters should not go overboard, the team considers it essential to offer both an accessible enhanced version and an option that resembles more closely the game that millions of fans adored at its original launch.

With its expected arrival in September, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles promises to be a renewed experience that pays homage to its legacy.
