What does that crack in the sky mean for Fortnite Season 5?

Fortnite players were treated to a spectacular series of events this past Saturday when the sky over the Battle Royale map literally split in half.

At 1:30 PM ET, a missile launched from the silo near Snobby Shores before seemingly disappearing into a portal, splitting in half, and exploding in awe-inspiring fashion. The detonation left a massive, glowing rift spider-webbing across the sky above the Battle Royale map.

The event was a sight to behold, but unfortunately, if you weren’t in the game at 1:30 ET on Saturday, you’re out of luck. The launch was Fortnite’s first real-time event, meaning that it only happens once.

So, what exactly did you miss if you weren’t in-game for the launch? Though the above video gives a pretty good view of what happened, things start to get a little muddled after the first few seconds. At first, the rocket slowly climbs skyward, then a secondary booster ignites, propelling the rocket off on an angle at a much faster speed. The missile then seems to enter orbit. For a few seconds, a mysterious voice echoes across the map. It seems to be setting a series of coordinates.

Then, all at once, the warhead begins its descent, with a series of laser guidance systems sending it straight for Tilted Towers. Just when it seems like the city is about to be obliterated, a blue glowing portal opens and the rocket simply disappears. Seconds later, another portal opens on the other side of the map. The missile ricochets back and forth between these rifts before finally detonating midair with an epic, ear-shattering boom, leaving the final giant rift that continues to loom over the map.

So… what the heck happened? And what does it mean for Season 5? It seems likely that the missile launch silo was part of Season 4’s superheroes and supervillains theme. If true, we can conclude that the supervillains were going to use the missile to destroy the city of Tilted Towers as part of their evil plan. However, at the last minute, it seems that someone – or something – intervened, causing the missile the ricochet off course.

Whether the rift was opened  by the missile’s detonation or by some other force remains to be seen. However, it seems likely that whatever the cause, these portals will be playing a key role in Season 5. A few perceptive Reddit users have also caught onto the fact that the portal seems to be getting larger. Smaller rifts have also been appearing and disappearing all across the map, such as this one at Lonely Lodge.

This all begs the question: what is on the other side of these mysterious rifts? We know from what happened to the rocket that these portals seem to lead to some kind of alternate dimension, but what if the rifts are actually portals through time? A few Fortnite data miners have discovered some interesting new assets in the game files:

All of these props seem to point to some kind of Wild West setting. New film noir-style Detective skins have also recently been added to the game.  Perhaps this is another hint that these portals have some kind of time-traveling abilities.

With almost a week to go until Season 5, we won’t have long to wait before we find out what exactly these mysterious portals have in store.

Facebook reveals which companies were given special access to your data

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Facebook has been going through quite the crisis recently. Trust in the big blue social network has been severely dented and head honcho Mark Zuckerberg was called to testify in front of Congress.

Since the first reports of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook has been under increasing pressure to disclose more details about what user data it shares and who with. We recently reported on the latest chapter of the scandal, which saw 61 companies being given extended access to user data. The pressure grew further when it emerged that Chinese companies like Huawei we’re getting their hands on Facebook user data.

In response to the growing pressure, Facebook has decided to release a list of the companies, which you can see below, that were granted special access to user data.  Each company had, according to the BBC:

“… been given a temporary exemption to a block on apps accessing details about users’ friends.”

What does this all mean?

This special access was granted after May 2015, when Facebook updated to a more restrictive system. Until then app developers were able to request Facebook data including name, gender, birthdate, location, photos, and page likes. The new system enacted a more stringent review process and removed access to friend’s data, but the above companies were given an exemption, of up to 6 months from the May 2015 deadline, before having to sign up to the system.

Facebook hasn’t explained why the 61 companies were given the extra time before having to comply with the new, stricter rules.

Instagram might soon be much more interactive

We recently reported that Facebook will start adding interactive elements to video content, and it seems that Instagram is also going to start doing something similar. Passively consuming content from social media can have an adverse effect on a person’s wellbeing, so Facebook believes drawing users in and making them active participants in the content will have a positive impact.

Instagram has seen a lot of innovation recently

Android Police reports that the interactive elements will come via a new questions feature in Instagram Stories. Yes/no polls have been a part of Instagram Stories for some time now, but according to the report Instagram is testing open ended-questions. Rather than just clicking to answer, users will be able to type out custom responses to the questions posed.

Instagram has recently rolled out a brand new app, IGTV, for long-form video content, and Instagram Lite for use on older or slower smartphones. That isn’t all, the Stories feature also received a pretty massive update with the addition of music stickers that play officially licensed music from the world’s top acts. This newest addition would fit into a recent trend of Instagram innovation that has seen the app break through 1 billion active monthly users.

These interactive questions are still very much in a test phase, and Instagram is yet to comment officially on their implementation. They haven’t rolled out around the world yet, and they may see some changes before they’re released to a wider audience. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Spotify now has a Lite app for Android too

It is still a test, and the icon says “beta,” but Spotify has launched Spotify Lite for Android. We’ve recently seen a spate of apps releasing basic versions of themselves so that users with older or slower phones can access their services. Spotify Lite is the latest and offers a much simpler version of the Spotify experience.

Compared to the likes of Facebook’s Lite apps or Google’s Go apps, Spotify Lite has cut a lot of the main app’s experience. Despite their smaller file size and less resource intensive operation, Facebook and Google have managed to maintain most of what their main apps offer. Spotify Lite has managed to cut its size down considerably but to achieve this, a lot of the Spotify experience that we know and love has been cut.

Spotify Lite saves data but sacrifices functionality
It is Spotify, but there is a lot missing

Spotify Lite offers users the ability to play random tracks from suggested playlists. The playlists are automatically set to shuffle, and there is no option turn off shuffle. That is pretty much it. There is no control over playlists, no radio, no single track search, and no radio stations. You download Spotify Lite, and you get the music you are given.

This is a test

Spotify has made it clear that this is a test app and that the company wants your feedback. Users have already started chiming in with their opinions via reviews on the Google Play store. Most people seem to be asking for:

  • Premium users to be able to turn off shuffle
  • Control over playlists
  • An ability to decide sound quality for downloaded music. This will give more control over the amount of space that the files take up.

It is still early days though, so if you download Spotify Lite and can think of any way to make it better, let Spotify know about it.

The Lite app trend that we’re seeing is a really positive move from the industry. We’re happy that Spotify is on board and wants to bring its service to users with more basic devices. The music streaming specialist still has a long way to go with Spotify Lite, however, so hopefully, over time, we’ll see this app getting better and better, based on user comments and recommendations.
