Sony announces the closure of its biggest failure to date

Sony has officially confirmed that it is shutting down Destruction AllStars, the PlayStation 5 exclusive released in February 2021. Launched as a major bet to encourage online gaming on the platform, the game faced an extremely cold reception, being criticized for its lack of content, the aggressiveness of its microtransactions, and the repetitiveness of its gameplay proposal.

A Game Bound for Disaster

According to information from Sony in an email sent to all users, it is no longer possible to purchase the game or virtual currency within the game since yesterday, May 26, 2026. Stating that “due to ongoing technical issues, the multiplayer services of Destruction AllStars for PlayStation 5 consoles will remain disabled and will no longer be available”, they emphasized that single-player modes will still be available until November 25, 2026, when the servers will close.

Destruction AllStars has always been surrounded by controversy. Announced as a premium game, it was set to be sold for €69.99 at a time when the standard for games was €59.99, leading to significant controversy. So much so that it would eventually be released as a free-to-play with free updates and micropayments for cosmetics and upgrades. This did not help alleviate an almost immediate failure.

Although this is not the only failure of Sony this generation with online games. The other great example is Concord, a game developed by Firewalk Studios that, due to unprecedented low sales, shut down its servers in two weeks. The difference compared to Destruction AllStars is that it was a premium game and not free-to-play, which is why they decided to kill it off sooner: it was giving them bad press. Even if the numbers were, by no means, worse than those of the game from Lucid Games.

The Sims is a franchise based on a basic principle: create a family and see how they interact with others while decorating their house and deciding their lives. This means that Bridgerton, a series that has taken the world by storm for its depiction of 19th-century nobility, but above all, for its romances and the spectacular nature of its settings and costumes, is exactly what many people seek in The Sims. And by extension, it makes sense that Bridgerton has decided to collaborate with The Sims 4.

Options for every budget and taste

Starting from May 12 until July 7, you can download various themed rewards from Bridgerton if you log in to your EA account for The Sims 4. With 22 items ranging from new features in Create a Sim mode to building and decoration objects, and even a new trait, you don’t have to spend any money to enjoy this collaboration.

Now, the most interesting part is the paid packs. There are two, divided into the “Lady Bridgerton’s Masquerade Ballroom Kit” and the “Lady Bridgerton’s Masquerade Ball Fashion Kit,” which can be purchased separately for 6.99 euros or together for 9.99. With some extras for those who choose the latter. The first of these will allow us to build opulent ballrooms reminiscent of Regency England, including crystal chandeliers and large banquet tables. The second will focus on accessories for our characters, ranging from opulent dresses and jewelry to mysterious masks so we can recreate the era with the utmost accuracy.

These two packs will arrive, in any case, a little later. They will not be available until August 14 and will require The Sims 4, which is currently free-to-play on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. So we will still have to wait a little, but summer promises to be, once again, about The Sims and The Bridgertons.

Pokémon revolutionizes its competitive game with a new game that is as interesting as it is questionable economically

Pokémon is a franchise that has been dominating for years. It has everything to do so. Tremendously charismatic characters, a company with the financial and logistical muscle to carry it forward, and a fandom willing to forgive the missteps that are never so loud as to be a problem. At The Pokémon Company, they have what Disney, Sanrio, and practically no one else has: a franchise of eternal success and the intelligence to know how to exploit it.

That is not the only reason for the popularity of Pokémon. Another is that its video games are good in a very peculiar way. They are accessible and enjoyable for casual and child audiences, for whom they are designed, but they are also deep enough for a whole competitive scene to emerge around them. One that is sanctioned by The Pokémon Company itself. Something they have wanted to exploit more deeply with Pokémon Champions.

Pokémon Champions shows that competitive play is for everyone

Launched on April 8 on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with a mobile version announced for a later time this year, Pokémon Champions aims to be the centerpiece of competitive Pokémon gaming. This is evident from the moment we start the game.

Here there is barely any story. We don’t capture Pokémon, but rather obtain them through a kind of gacha system or transfer them from other Pokémon titles. We can’t even deeply customize our main character. The central part of the game is combat. With ranked, friendly, and tournament modes, everything revolves around battles, and after a series of tutorials to teach us the absolute basics of the game, we are given a choice of a Pokémon, provided with five others that align with it, and thrown into the arena to fight.

Pokémon Champions feels like it wants to convince players that competitive play is for everyone. And it succeeds. Because while it makes some concessions along the way to achieve this, what it does, to this day, adds more than it takes away from the game and its future possibilities.

If Pokémon’s competitive scene had two problems, they were, first, that it was completely inaccessible for newcomers, and second, that being connected to the main franchise games, they had to adhere to the rules and systems designed primarily for a casual experience. With Champions, specifically focused on providing a competitive game centered on combat, they have managed to address both issues. How? By doing something tremendously unpopular that has cost them a lot of criticism, somewhat unfairly: drastically cutting content.

In Pokémon Champions, there are 187 Pokémon and only mega evolutions as combat mechanics, of which there are 59. Items, a little over 100. Considering that there are currently 1,025 Pokémon, mega evolutions, Z-moves, Dynamax, Teracristalization, and moves +, in addition to a little over 300 items, many players have felt disappointed by the tremendous scarcity compared to what has been available so far. Especially because the next competitive season will already be played in Pokémon Champions.

But this change is positive. With fewer Pokémon and fewer items, it is easier to deal with for players who are entering competitive play for the first time, allowing for a simpler learning process. It also allows Pokémon Company to create tighter metas, where they delicately control the power level they want to achieve at any given moment, being able to combine different battle mechanics or items if they want to add an extra level of complexity at any given time. Giving them greater flexibility in shaping the competitive scene, and opening the possibility for a richer and more varied meta, thanks to that constraint. Because sometimes, less is more.

The problem of being free-to-play

That said, not everything is good. It is true that the absence of many key items and the focus on most items being mega-evolution stones, with most items being berries of one kind or another, makes item-based strategies excessively poor. This is something they should correct by adding in future updates, if not the most popular items from the competitive scene, then at least a dozen items that would make this strategic layer of the game richer and more complex.

The issue of monetization is more problematic. Because while it is not a problem now, it is easy to see how it could become one.

Pokémon Champions is very generous. Almost too generous. But that’s the trick. All free-to-play games start off being very generous only to end up not being so, and it’s easy to see how this can turn into a money pit. To begin with, the monthly battle passes, which mainly correspond to cosmetics, already represent a more than generous expense for anyone who wants to complete them monthly.

But, who wants to play completely free-to-play? They can, in theory. There is only one in-game currency and two types of different tickets, which are obtained through paid subscriptions, which, as we mentioned, have been distributed generously so far. And even more generously if you pay the 8 euros for the starter pack that gives a small advantage in that sense, but which is in no way necessary.

The problem is that the game has a subscription. For 50 euros annually, or 5 euros monthly, it offers great advantages in in-game currency and tickets. Although it remains to be seen whether it will really be necessary to keep up with the game’s updates, that is not the only subscription we will need. If we want to import our Pokémon from other installments of the franchise, we will have to bring them from Pokémon Home, a free app where we can store our Pokémon. As long as there are no more than 30.

Here is the trap that will surely end up costing money to its players. The Pokémon from Pokémon Home are not transferred to Pokémon Champions, but rather lent: they can be used in Champions, but they remain in Home. They take up space in both Home and Champions. This means that if we bring our previously optimized Pokémon from other games to save money, we will be testing the limits of our Home account. And if we exceed it, we will have to pay a monthly or annual subscription that, while not very expensive, is another subscription to add to the one for Champions. Or if we wanted to play free-to-play, one that we have to pay for, at least.

That is the big problem with the game. You can already see where they want to take our money. The most expensive thing by far is catching Pokémon, as obtaining Pokémon permanently is really costly, but bringing them from Home requires a permanent space that may lead us to have to pay a subscription, whether we want to or not. And that could very well end up being exactly what kills the game: The Pokémon Company’s need to get our money.

Riot Games has officially released its fighting game and it is exactly what we expected, but also less than we wished for

Fighting games are one of the most particular genres of video games. They are undoubtedly niche, but they are treated as if they were still mainstream. Everyone wants them to appeal to the general public, but at the same time, they get furious if they are not basically esports designed to have high-level competitions around them. Riot Games has officially released its fighting game and it is exactly what we expected, but also less than we wished for

Fighting games are one of the most unique genres in video gaming. They are undoubtedly niche, but they are treated as if they are still mainstream. Everyone wants them to appeal to the general public, but at the same time, they get furious if they are not basically esports designed to have high-level competitions around them. And in this constant contradiction of having to be treated like sports, but wanting to reach the public, is where they exist: never managing to break out of the big titles that have already attracted an audience for decades.

Riot Games seems to want to be the one to break this idea. To create a fighting game that is not only competitive but also introduces new players to the genre. And for that, it has the necessary keys. Characters with whom we already have a prior relationship, a competitive structure, and the money to make the game treated as a sport from the start. But is that enough for 2XKO to succeed?

A game that has a long history

Until we reached where we are today, with the game being launched, many things had to happen. To begin with, it had to be announced. That happened in 2019 and it was done under the name of Project L. Riot did not want to provide more details about what was happening with the game, except that it was being developed by its studios in Los Angeles, Sydney, and San Francisco.

For years, that was all we knew. At least, until February 22, 2024, when we learned two new things: that it would be a 2 vs. 2 game, where we can switch between characters at any time, and that its name would be much more alluring in English than in any other language: 2XKO.

Since its announcement until today, many things have happened. To begin with, the game was launched in early access in a closed beta by invitation on October 7, 2025. Harvesting great success among casual and specialized audiences, it managed to become the buzz of fighting games for a few weeks. So much so that, by the end of the year, it was nominated for the Best Fighting Game category at The Games Awards 2025 despite not having been officially released. An award that was ultimately won by Tekken 8.

Now 2XKO is officially out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with a roster of 13 characters from famous characters of Runeterra, the universe of League of Legends, and the impressions are clear: there is potential for something big here.

The first reason is that Riot is behind it. They have money and they are going to use it, not by organizing the tournaments themselves, but by helping established tournament and competition organizers to create their own 2XKO competitions. This ensures that an organic competition for the game is created. Especially considering that Riot has already stated that it is not their intention to create a professional league for the game, as they did at one time with some of their other games, such as League of Legends.

The second reason is that it is a relatively accessible game. Although the tutorials are quite questionable, the assistance systems are excellent and allow for casual play in an easy and effective way. Since we add to that the fact that the game is free-to-play and has characters that are familiar to a wide audience, 2XKO has real potential to become a game that captivates many people outside of fighting games.

So, what problems do we find? It falls short in everything it wants to do. Its monetization is the classic Riot model, with costly cosmetics. The depth of the game is noticeably lower than that of other games on the market, raising the question of whether the ceiling will be too low to really interest professional fighting game players. And the jump from playing with assistance to playing without it is very harsh, and the tutorials do not help in this regard, not addressing the biggest concern that fighting games have: making players feel comfortable making the leap from novice to intermediate level.

Are these problems enough for 2XKO to fail? Only time will tell. Especially since they are conditional: we still don’t know how serious they are compared to how they appear on paper. What is clear is that, for now, it is a game with a potentially thriving competitive scene thanks to the money it will generate and a casual audience that can engage due to the ease of picking up the controller and feeling good playing with their favorite characters, even without knowing anything about fighting games. So, just for that reason, what is certain is that 2XKO will have a spectacular launch.

ARC Raiders was almost a free-to-play game, but that would have been worse for you

Embark Studios has made the controversial decision to change the model of its game ARC Raiders, which will go from being free to a paid title, initially causing an uproar among the gaming community. However, after this transition, the team has observed significant improvements in the gaming experience, according to Virgil Watkins, the project’s design director.

A worse game due to microtransactions

Watkins mentioned in a recent development video that this decision has allowed the team to remove barriers and artificial timers that were inherent to the free-to-play model. In that system, developers are forced to create mechanics aimed at keeping players engaged, which can lead to friction and frustrations. “It was difficult to respect the player’s time,” Watkins noted, adding that trivial aspects like crafting items were tied to timers that forced users to wait.

The transition to a payment model has allowed Embark to adjust the game mechanics without previous commercial limitations, enhancing the feeling of effort and reward. For example, activities like crafting items are now processed without artificial waits, which has facilitated a smoother and more rewarding experience. “Now things take the time they should take,” summarized the designer, which has impacted the perception of the game as a whole.

Despite being a paid title, with a set price of 39.99 euros, Watkins clarified that the studio will continue to explore monetization models that are not predatory. “The priority is to find sustainable methods that are fair to players,” he concluded, emphasizing that the balance between monetization and user experience remains a central challenge for the industry.

Isaac Clarke, the iconic protagonist of the Dead Space saga, has made his unexpected appearance in the game Skate, through a cosmetic pack that has generated controversy among players. This collaboration, typical of Electronic Arts (EA) in an attempt to attract fans through nostalgia, allows users to customize their experience in the new Skate, a free-to-play title set in the open world of San Vansterdam.

We like Isaac Clarke, but we don’t like 30 euros

The Isaac Clarke pack includes several cosmetic items, such as a “cardboard” suit, a themed board, the Necro Stomp emote, stickers, and an avatar. However, the price of this content has been deemed excessive, costing between 30 and 35 euros, an amount that exceeds the cost of complete games like the recently released Dead Space Remake, available for around 15.99 euros digitally and 14.99 euros in physical format.

The gaming community has expressed its discontent on social media, reminiscing about past times when obtaining skins was much more accessible, like in Skate 3, where Isaac’s outfit was unlocked with a simple code. In contrast, the current microtransaction system imposes a pricing structure that leaves many players frustrated. With a minimum of 30-35 euros required to access the pack, players feel they are being encouraged to spend more on cosmetics than on complete games.

The debate over microtransaction prices in free-to-play titles is a recurring topic among fans, especially when comparisons with previous products highlight notable differences in terms of accessibility. As Skate continues in early access, the insistence on a more ethical monetization model could be crucial for maintaining the loyalty of its player base.

With the arrival of new playable content, such as additional characters and the introduction of ranked matches, many fans have received the title with enthusiasm. However, concerns about its monetization model have overshadowed the launch.

Free to play, but with very expensive microtransactions

2XKO is a free-to-play game, which means its funding is based on in-game purchases, mainly cosmetics. However, the prices of these items have been the subject of criticism. The welcome packs, which include premium currency and access to characters, have caused widespread discontent, especially the most expensive pack, which costs 99.99 euros and locks three of the most desired skins, inspired by the popular series Arcane. The option to purchase cosmetics individually is not available, which has led the community to question Riot Games’ pricing policy.

Among the available items, legendary category skins are sold for 2000 KO Points, equivalent to 20 euros, and a battle pass is offered that ranges from 10 to 35 euros, depending on the level. Although it can be argued that these purchases are optional and that the focus on cosmetics is appealing, many players believe that the prices are high and that the variety of options is often confusing.

Criticism of Riot Games’ monetization has resurfaced, recalling the price increases in League of Legends in recent years, where some skins have reached up to 500 euros. With the community on alert, it is clear that Riot must pay attention to the concerns of its fans, especially with upcoming releases and events, such as the League of Legends World Championship.

Ubisoft has released a new version of its successful game Rainbow Six Siege, known as Siege X, adopting a free-to-play model with the intention of attracting new players. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the title has experienced a notable loss of users in recent weeks, which has raised concerns within the gaming community. In early June, the number of concurrent players on Steam reached 142,000, but since then it has fallen to numbers lower than those before the launch of the new version.

A game that is plummeting due to cheaters

One of the most prominent problems facing Siege X is the proliferation of hackers that have harmed the gaming experience. Ubisoft has been criticized for not implementing effective measures to combat this situation. In response, the company has promised to impose harsher penalties against cheaters and has stated its intention to target cheat providers that affect the integrity of the game. According to the plan detailed by Ubisoft, permanent bans are expected to be applied to offenders and systems for detecting improper behavior will be improved.

Aside from addressing the issue of cheaters, Ubisoft has admitted that its communication regarding changes and improvements in the game has not been effective. The company has acknowledged that this has contributed to the decline in interest for Siege X. Consequently, a series of adjustments are underway, including the renewal of the competitive mode, revisions in progression and rewards, as well as the incorporation of more content in the game’s seasons. These changes will be carried out under a testing phase to ensure they are well received by the community.

With these actions, Ubisoft hopes to stabilize the gaming experience in Siege X and regain the trust of players, who have been enjoying the title since its launch nearly a decade ago.

The highly anticipated fighting game 2XKO from Riot Games will launch in early access on October 7. In a context where experimentation and innovation are key, the game director, Shaun Rivera, warns players about possible imperfections in this first phase. According to Rivera, the team aims to test new ideas, which may result in a somewhat bumpy start, characteristic of early access games.

A game that will have obvious ups and downs

In a recent interview, Rivera expressed his willingness to take creative risks, acknowledging that some of the proposals may not be successful. “We are trying new things. Sometimes they will work and sometimes they won’t, but we have to be prepared for that,” said the director. This experimental approach is partly due to the fact that the team is developing champions from scratch, without reusing animations from previous fighting titles, which adds an additional layer of complexity to the development process.

Despite the excitement for the launch, some players have criticized the limited selection of playable characters available in the closed beta, where icons like Vi, Jinx, and Ekko can be found. Rivera assures that although the number of champions will be restricted at the beginning, they are working on incorporating more characters into the roster, something that could be well received by the gaming community that longs for greater diversity in the lineup.

2XKO will be launched as a free game in early access, offering gameplay options both solo and in duo, as well as the possibility to participate in ranked matches. With a solid foundation and many ideas in development, the team behind 2XKO is eager to receive feedback from players as they continue to refine their vision for the game.

Riot has officially launched its fighting game, 2XKO. Or at least, its closed beta. If you are one of the lucky ones who have gained access to it or know someone who could have given you access, congratulations. If not, we’re sorry. Invitations will gradually circulate, making it easier to join, allowing more people to get in. Because there is a lot to unpack after the first 24 hours of 2XKO. Including what they have aimed to achieve with this new fighting game.

First of all, it is important to clarify the most important thing: 2XKO focuses on the universe of Runeterra. Unlike Valorant, where they wanted to distance themselves from the universe of League of Legends, in 2XKO they have chosen to embrace all the work already done. Here are all the characters you already know and love from their other games, or from the fabulous Netflix series, Arcane, each with their personality intact in the form of spectacular fighting moves.

Because this is a fighting game and, moreover, it is quite unique. It is a Tag Team. This means that we do not fight with a single fighter, but with several, among which we alternate following certain rules. In the case of 2XKO, as its name suggests, the teams consist of two characters that we can customize to our liking.

A fighting game that wants you to play your way

This is perhaps the most surprising aspect at first glance. The level of detail in customization. It’s not just that we can choose any character, as long as we have unlocked it, and form the team we want, but it also allows us to customize many aspects of it. The type of team attacks, the skins, and even the automation of certain movements and combos, which we can program to be executed automatically whenever a specific sequence of simple attacks is performed.

Although this may sound against the spirit of fighting games, it is a way to make it easier for new players in the genre to enter 2XKO. There is more depth in the game than it seems, with combo breaks, juggles, and various types of specials, and it can become overwhelming for many players. That’s why the option to execute certain specials at the end of specific sequences is a way to make it easier for less experienced fighting game players to enter without having to worry about all aspects of them. Especially because, at a certain point, they will discover the importance of diversifying when they launch their specials.

The concern for the novice and casual player makes the tutorial’s harshness quite strange. Long, offering us rewards for completing it and throwing endless technical terms at us in unclear ways, it is not always as explicit and straightforward as we would like. Although it is far from being the worst we have seen in the genre.

What reasons are there to play 2XKO?

On the other hand, those who are already into fighting games will have a lot to enjoy here. With a small roster, but full of personality, it’s impossible not to find two characters that fit your playstyle. The unlock system seems generous, but we’ll have to see how it evolves over time, because being a free-to-play game could become a serious problem. And while the game aims to be accessible for people who have never touched a fighting game, it has a rewarding layer of depth that will make hardcore players happy.

Is it deep enough or different enough for them to abandon their current fighting games? Honestly, it seems hard to believe. 2XKO has some interesting foundations, but it doesn’t seem to bring anything as interesting, new, or exciting to think, at first glance, that it will represent any kind of revolution in fighting games. At least not for now.

If Riot knows how to cultivate a competitive scene worth participating in, due to its prizes and community, and manages to attract a more casual audience to fighting games and get them hooked, 2XKO could be the big surprise of the decade in fighting games. And a much-needed breath of fresh air that the genre has been lacking for a long time. But achieving this will be very difficult, even for a company as influential as Riot Games. Even if they have a solid foundation, if they know how to play their cards right, they could achieve what once seemed impossible.
