“You have failed, you should be ashamed of yourselves”: The Green Lantern writer who has hated the HBO Max series with all his heart

After all the controversy surrounding Lanterns, the HBO Max series has finally come to an end, and the reviews have been, to put it generously, mixed. DC fans have gotten angry with Damon Lindelof and Tom King for telling a story their way instead of adapting one of the character’s legendary storylines, and they’re not alone: some of the publisher’s creators have taken up arms against the streaming service for not doing it well enough.

In the darkest night…

Grant Morrison was one of the first to get angry with the series, although gradually he got into it and admitted his mistake. That is something Ethan Van Sciver, artist on the comic-book series, can’t say: he’s watched it week after week and has waited until the end to share his opinion: “You failed”. Then again, what’s he going to say.

“It shouldn’t have been hard to put these characters through the hell you’ve put them through and have them come out better in episode 8, but instead you’ve destroyed them. All of them. Even the Manhunters are diminished by this series. John is a villainous, selfish asshole. Kerry is a monstrously stupid and cowardly murderer, Guy is a coward and Hal… Why did you have to kill him in such an empty and senseless, depressing and sick way?“. It’s not clear to me: so, did you like it or…?

But it doesn’t end there: “There is something deeply wrong with your writers’ room. I can’t believe James Gunn allowed this sick nightmare to sit alongside his fun superhero movies. All of you should be ashamed of this tremendous failure”. At HBO Max they’re considering giving it a second season, but just to be safe, it’d be better not to show it to DC’s creators. For whatever reason, they didn’t like it very much.

It’s official: ‘Bridgerton’ isn’t coming to an end and will have an unexpected spin-off

Although Netflix isn’t exactly the best streaming service at supporting its long-running shows, you have to admit that with Bridgerton they’re really outdoing themselves. Aware that they have a hit on their hands, they’ve not only renewed the series for season 5 (out of 8 novels), but they’ve also just announced that they’re expanding its universe with a new spin-off. After the one they made about Queen Charlotte, it was only a matter of time.

Coffee, pastries, and nobility

This new series still doesn’t have a name, but we know it will star Lady Violet in her youth, and specifically in her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The person behind it will be a regular Shonda Rhimes collaborator, Tom Verica, who besides working on Bridgerton has also worked on Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.

Obviously, seeing the success of Bridgerton, it’s only logical that Netflix would want to capitalize on its success and make as many seasons as possible. In fact, the marketing campaigns are spectacular precisely because they know they’ll pay off: six years after the first season premiered, the public is still asking for more, so this isn’t going to stop until they run out of pages to adapt. And there’s still a long way to go.

Netflix’s future looks super packed with projects, between the U.S. release of The Black Ball and, as always, the next big surprise hit that, as usual, nobody’s ever heard of until it premieres..

Andrew Garfield has stopped using ChatGPT… after playing Sam Altman

I don’t know if the same thing happens to you, but my Instagram Reels tab is crawling with people promising that I’m going to get rich if I cheat at solitaire. Make videos using ChatGPT, make books using ChatGPT, “write” up to 10 novels a day and publish them on Amazon… Anyway, peak desperation. However, despite the success (like it or not) of many of these projects made with AI, there are also people who can’t stand the sight of them. One of those people is Andrew Garfield.

ChatGPT Download

Very, very artificial

The actor, who’s burst into the Oscar race out of nowhere after Artificial charmed critics and audiences, says that after researching Sam Altman to play him, he hasn’t felt any more desire to play around with AI. “It scared me a little. I felt distrust toward the technology. It seems the people encouraging us to use it don’t know exactly what it’s capable of. Personally, it seems a little irresponsible to me”.

Although more and more people are dependent on ChatGPT to do literally anything, Garfield has refused to use it any more: “Luckily, I don’t need ChatGPT in my life as much as other people in other industries. As an actor, I was using it as a kind of fancy Google for research. I know that’s not what it was made for”. You know what looks a lot like Google? Exactly: Google.

We all know Hollywood’s next strike will have AI at its center, but the actor says it won’t be that big a deal: “I don’t think actors are going to be rendered useless. The soul of humanity is the soul of humanity. And I think actors are some of the people who are going to have to keep humanity alive in all of us and in the stories we tell”. I honestly hope he’s right. I don’t know if I’d count on it, greed is awfully tempting.

The first animated film made by AI that wants to compete at the Oscars will be released in theaters. It’s pure slop

Production companies quickly understood that there’s a way to catch the public’s attention so they’ll buy tickets: offer them things made by the creators they trust. That’s what happened with Markiplier and Iron Lung, or with Kane Parsons and Backrooms. Now, Fable, an AI animation studio, is going to try to repeat that success by with a long-shot bid built around Gods Don’t Give Gifts, YouTuber Gossip Goblin’s first film… made entirely with AI, of course.

Well, AI guess that’s that

Gossip Goblin has 1.5 million subscribers on his channel, where he’s clearly found an audience, with short films that have topped 9.3 million views and Shorts that have topped 15 million views. For now, the first trailer for Gods Don’t Give Gifts has passed 500,000 views, although, yes, only with around 7,400 “likes”. Enough to mount an Oscars campaign? Apparently so.

Actually, this film (which is surprisingly visually “slop”) is a collection of four short films by the director, and it will be screened in the United States starting on December 4. Or that’s what they promise, given that they still haven’t found a distributor. Obviously, this bid for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature is meant to show just how strongly the public and the Academy oppose the technology. And when they don’t nominate them, well, they’ll already have their talking points.

The head of Fable, the AI company that created the film, says that “For 5 years the question has been, when will an AI film win the Oscar? Gods Don’t Give Gifts is the first one that has a chance to be nominated, and after that we’ll see”. They know perfectly well that they’re not going to be nominated and that no one in the industry is really interested, but they’re going to have to watch it. Anyway. What a world.

Microsoft announces its new Surface Laptop Ultra and will pay you $1,000 if it manages to replace your MacBook Pro

Microsoft has set a date and price for the Surface Laptop Ultra, a 15-inch machine that starts at $2,599 and takes direct aim at the 16-inch MacBook Pro. According to Microsoft, it will arrive on October 16 and will focus on creative, development, and AI-related work. Just as Apple prepares a much lighter OLED MacBook Pro, a machine we expect to get a major refresh, Microsoft will offer up to $1,000 if you switch.

Plenty of power from Nvidia RTX Spark

The new Surface packs an Nvidia RTX Spark chip with a Blackwell GPU of up to 6,144 cores, a Grace CPU of up to 20 cores, and up to 128GB of unified memory. The mini-LED, touchscreen display can reach an HDR peak brightness that, according to Microsoft, is 25% higher than the MacBook Pro’s, although it hasn’t shared exact figures.

With three USB-C ports, one USB-A, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and Magnetic Connect, Microsoft’s version of MagSafe, we’re looking at the most powerful Surface yet. Microsoft, again without sharing exact numbers, claims that it weighs less than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Up to $1,000.00 for your MacBook Pro

As part of a presentation surprisingly focused on comparing itself with Apple’s offering, Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 if you trade in an eligible MacBook Pro with the purchase of the Surface Laptop Ultra.

Waiting for Apple’s new laptop? Rumors point to a thinner, lighter OLED MacBook Pro with a touchscreen. And don’t forget the recent launch of the new Mac mini and Mac Studio. We’ll see where Microsoft’s offering stands when it’s compared with Apple’s new models.

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival understands something essential about the Hellraiser franchise: what’s truly terrifying isn’t the Cenobites

There was a time when Clive Barker was synonymous with horror. It was an elegant, spine-chilling, brutal kind of horror, and one far more elaborate and complex than the mainstream was capable of offering. If Stephen King was already the king of horror in those days, Barker emerged as the prince: a rebellious and brutal one, capable of opening up an unimaginable new space. One full of violence and sex, but also of divergent identities where many more people could find a place than before.

Dead by Daylight Download

That was the secret not only of Clive Barker, but of Hellraiser. That it was a place with room for everything and everyone. Behind the blood, the pain, and the sex, there was something more. There was room for something different. For more people. That’s why it was so popular, and why Hellraiser, over the decades, has endured as a franchise that has become a veritable founding myth. That’s why it shouldn’t surprise us that Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival has finally been revealed. And that it’s a game very much worth keeping an eye on.

A protagonist scarred by trauma

Developed by Saber Interactive, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival puts us in the role of Aidan Lynch, a member of a biker gang whose job is to enforce order within it. But despite the violence of his profession, his personality couldn’t be more different. Cunning and a little faint-hearted, he lets events carry him along. As when, after a session of rough sex with his girlfriend, Sunny, they activate the Genesis Configuration and the cenobites, extradimensional beings with a BDSM aesthetic, flay her and take her with them. But completely in love with her and dependent on her, he decides to pursue them to bring her back.

The tone of the game is exactly what this first paragraph suggests. There’s explicit sex, there’s BDSM, there’s gore, and there are visions of a singular, strange hell that is as unsettling as it is confusing every time we set foot in it. The game is aggressive both visually and emotionally and has no problem showing us all the facets of Barker’s literature, not just of Hellraiser, but of his Books of Blood in general. And that’s why it works.

In any case, Aidan isn’t defenseless. Or not exactly. With the Genesis Configuration and all kinds of weapons, melee and firearms, he can defend himself against his attackers. Who aren’t cenobites, but things even more peculiar and strange: human adherents of the cenobites and the experiments they perform on them.

As a result, the whole adventure is a survival horror that recalls a mix of Resident Evil 8 and Condemned: Criminal Origins, where we’ll have to manage our inventory, constantly be crafting ammo and keep a close eye on our limited resources. Creating a constant tension not only because of the combat, where every one of our blows will be less brutal than the brutal blows of our far more numerous rivals, but also because of the scarcity of what we have at our disposal.

A game of pure horror

All of this, moreover, unfolds on two planes of reality at once: our world and the Labyrinth. In our world are the action sections where we fight enemies and move forward normally in a survival horror. In the Labyrinth we enter cenobite territory, where they’ll pursue us, we’ll have to dodge deadly traps and solve simple, but stimulating puzzles in order to uncover their secrets and get out of there alive.

This combination of elements makes the game always stimulating and interesting. Never losing its tone. We always feel completely overwhelmed by the situation, just as Aidan is, always dependent on something: drugs, his gang, Sunny. Having to discover for the first time in his life how to survive a situation far beyond his abilities without giving himself over to a higher power. Not even that of the cenobites.

And that’s even though the power is far greater. Because the Genesis Configuration gives us immense, limited-use powers, that make it easier to get through the levels. Though at the cost of Suffering, which is drained by using powers and is only recovered by inflicting pain on our enemies. Something easier said than done.

With close collaboration from Clive Barker himself, and with many references to the lore of the franchise that only the most die-hard fans will be able to spot—especially the comics, though not only those; and you don’t need to spot them or know them to appreciate what the game does—, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is one of the best survival horror games of the year. And for fans of the franchise, an absolute must. Because few franchise-based games have managed to capture the tone of a work so well and translate it into a video game as this one does.

Ring finally launches its own smart lock: it recharges itself, by the way

Ring has finally unveiled its first smart lock. As Apple and LG prepare their own range of cameras and locks, Amazon is making its move in the home automation space and doing so with an especially interesting idea: we can generate power by turning the lock’s own mechanism.

Ring - Always Home Download

A lock that can generate its own power

The Ring Smart Lock, like other smart locks on the market, comes with a fingerprint reader and a touch keypad and lets us control it from the Ring app. We can open the door from our phone, lock it from outside the house, and create temporary access for family members or visitors. But what if the battery runs out? It turns out that’s no longer a possibility. A few turns of the lock are enough to charge the battery so we can get into the house no matter how long the lock has gone unused.

According to Amazon, the new lock will arrive during the first quarter of 2027 for $249, in black, silver, and brass. Installation requires no wiring and it integrates with Echo, Alexa, and other Ring devices, which is especially interesting now that Alexa+ is gaining ground in the smart home.

Ring is pairing the lock with new Retinal Vision 4K cameras, which improve low-light performance and show more accurate colors. Without a doubt an excellent step forward now that Apple is setting the stage for a new phase in its home ecosystem. We’ll see what else arrives in the home automation space in the coming months.
