Nintendo applies for GameCube trademarks: this is what it could mean

Rumors have been swirling in the Nintendo fanbase ever since it was discovered that Nintendo recently filed multiple trademarks involving the Nintendo GameCube. Fans of the classic system have had their heads spinning, wondering what the trademarks will lead to. Here are a few theories as to what the trademarks mean:

1. Nintendo is developing a GameCube Classic Mini

Hot off the trail of the adorably small but impossible-to-track-down NES and SNES Classic systems, Nintendo could have a Gamecube Classic Mini in the pipeline. The system is home to many classic gamesthat fans would surely jump at the chance to revisit like Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The rousing success of the NES and SNES Classic Mini systems seem to paint the GameCube Classic Mini as an inevitability, with the recent trademarks possibly telling us that it may release sooner than we thought.

2. The trademarks refer to the Switch GameCube controller adapters

During the Super Smash Bros Ultimate reveal at this year’s E3, series director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Nintendo was releasing a GameCube controller adapter for the Nintendo Switch. Since literally everybody in the world uses the GameCube controller when they play Smash, fans everywhere rejoiced. However, it would admittedly be slightly disappointing if the only thing to come out of these Gamecube trademarks was a controller adapter. Hopefully, it’s something more!

3. Nintendo is planning on releasing GameCube games on the Virtual Console

While details on Nintendo’s upcoming online service for the Switch have been scarce, they have revealed that subscribers will have access to a library of classic NES games. While this is not technically the Virtual Console, the trademark may suggest that Nintendo is preparing to reintroduce the Virtual Console with the ability to download and play GameCube games. It may sound like a pipe dream at this point, but hopefully, Nintendo is listening to its audience, as requests for GameCube games on the Virtual Console have been circulating for years. Being able to play these classics on the go for the first time ever would be amazing.

Bringing back couch play: 5 amazing indie co-op games

Online gaming is so widespread these days these days that it’s easy to forget that multiplayer gaming used to only be local. Even Halo, which used to be one of the most popular couch multiplayer games in the world, didn’t have split screen in its latest entry. While online gaming is fun and accessible, sometimes you just want to invite some friends over, order a pizza, and play Mario Party until 3 a.m. Here are some newer indie games that reinvigorate that couch co-op spirit.

1. Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime

The name of this game is hilariously weird, and the game itself is even weirder. The game has you playing as one of many cute space pilots, scouring the universe, fighting hostile aliens, and rescuing helpless animals. Each player has their own character, and you can run around the giant circular ship to the different sections to control different parts. For example, one person could pilot the ship, while another controls the shields, with another on the turrets.

The game supports up to four players, inevitably, leading to a lot of shouting and mayhem. Despite the cutesy art style, the game is actually quite difficult, as every player needs to micromanage their specific role carefully. Amusingly, the end of every level presents a “love meter” that tells you how well you and your partner were in sync.

The game is available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC/Mac. The trailer can be viewed here:

2. Overcooked

Overcooked download now
10

Overcooked is a frantic cooperative action game in which players try desperately to run a restaurant without everything going haywire. The game is basically Diner Dash cranked up to 11, as players must balance working quickly with getting the orders right to pass the level and get a high score. Each order that comes in must be made to specification, and your customers will tolerate no mistakes.

The game is both easier and harder when you get more people. It’s easier in the sense that you have more hands on deck to handle the various kitchen tasks, but it’s harder because you have so many people running around the kitchen, and then you get an order wrong, and the steak caught on fire, and there are no clean dishes left, and you’re only 10 points away from winning the level…etc. etc. Overcooked is hilariously stressful and we recommend this one to anybody who loves screaming at their friends. Overcooked 2 was recently announced, so keep a look out for that, too.

The game is out for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The trailer can be watched here.

3. Don’t Starve Together

Don't Starve Together download now

This charmingly creepy Burtonesque game tasks players with surviving a bleak and surreal world starting with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Like the title implies, players need to keep their characters fed, but they also need to worry about managing their characters’ sanity and fighting off an all-powerful but unseen Lovecraftian horror named Charlie. Don’t Starve Together combines the survival and roguelike genres to craft a bleak but endearing adventure. Each death is permanent (barring the use of certain items) so players must work together carefully to avoid the infinite number of things waiting to kill them.

The game is available on iOS, Android, Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The trailer can be viewed here.

4. Cuphead

Cuphead is run-and-gunning at its best. The difficulty is hellishly brutal, with the game being only incrementally easier with a friend on your side. Resist the urge to snap your controller in half and you’ll be treated to a gorgeously animated adventure straight out of a 1940’s Max Fleischer cartoon. While the game is incredibly hard, it is never unfair. Enemies telegraph their attacks clearly, and are so unique and well animated that it’s hard to hate them. With that being said, you will likely let out a primal scream when you finally beat that boss that just killed you 500 times in a row.

The game is out for PC and Xbox One. The trailer can be viewed here.

5. Snipperclips

While the other games on this list may be frantic and stressful, Snipperclips is anything but. In this game, players cut each other up into various shapes in order to work together to complete a level. You need to get creative with your snipping, as each level presents a unique problem to solve, such as shooting a ball into a hoop or helping a hamster run across a bridge. The cutesy art style and laid back music make this game feel much more relaxed than other co-op games, and it’s a fine title to wind down and relax with your friends.

The game is available on the Nintendo Switch and the trailer can be viewed here.

3 features Square Enix’s upcoming Avengers game needs to be great

While Marvel is casually shattering box office records with megahits like “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” they have been dormant when it comes to video games. For years, Marvel has released few-to-no AAA games based on their beloved characters. Instead, they have released many mobile games, undoubtedly because they are cheaper to create and still rake in tons of money. However, with Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 game and Square Enix’s The Avengers Project on the horizon, fans can have the big-budget Marvel games they’ve been wanting for years. Details on this hotly anticipated game are scarce, but we’ve put together a list of things we think would help this Avengers game live up to the hype. Watch the teaser trailer below:

Include characters from ALL corners of the Marvel Universe

Ever since the explosive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel has promoted characters featured in their movies as opposed to characters they don’t have the film rights to. Most notably, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men have taken a backseat to the Avengers and their related characters (Disney seemingly views promoting these characters as promoting the films of rival studio Fox). However, with news of Disney’s buyout of 20th Century Fox, all Marvel characters will be under the same roof for the first time in years. Including these characters in some way in their Avengers game would be a nice high profile reintroduction. According to an analysis of leaked concept art for the game (which can be viewed below), the game also includes more obscure Marvel characters, such as Ex Nihilo and Black Bolt. With Insomniac’s Spider-Man having a grounded story set in New York, it would be nice to see The Avengers Project explore stranger and more obscure areas and characters in the Marvel Universe. The presence of Ex Nihilo alone shows that Square Enix is willing to dive beyond just the MCU when it comes to Marvel characters, and that makes us very excited.

Have deep customization and RPG options

Raven Software’s X-Men Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance series both fantastically combined action and RPG elements. Each character from both series’ massive rosters had their own unique powerset, costumes, and gear. These powers and costumes could be upgraded or changed through experience points and loot, and teams of characters that synergize together (such as the Fantastic Four or the Avengers) are given stat bonuses. Hopefully, Square Enix will allow players to customize their characters through stat management and alternative costumes, allowing players to assemble the superhero dream teams they’ve always wanted to see.

Have a deep, team-centric combat system

The whole concept of the Avengers is having a diverse and sometimes volatile group of people work together to be greater than the sum of their parts. It would be awesome if Square Enix allowed for heroes to creatively combine their powers as seen in the gif above. The heroes of the Marvel Universe have such creative and diverse powersets, so Square Enix needs to make sure that every character feels and plays completely different from each other. Hopefully, they balance each character so that they feel equally useful, despite the power levels being so dramatically different between characters.

These 4 hilarious Pokémon Go ripoffs will make you cringe

During the summer of 2016, it was impossible to escape Pokémon Go. Everywhere you went, people were either playing the game or talking about it. Both presidential candidates even gave it a shoutout. With over 800 million downloads, Pokémon Go was a huge success for Nintendo and developer Niantic. However, it would be naive to assume that something that popular could exist without being ripped off. Developers quickly cranked out half-baked apps that desperately tried to capitalize off of the Pokémania. The results range from okay-at-best to shameful to downright bizarre. Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Pixelmon Go

This shameless ripoff seems like it was spat out in 10 minutes by a room of old corporate dudes. “Kids like Minecraft? Kids like Pokémon? What’re you waiting for? Get it out!”

Despite its title, this app has no relation to the popular Minecraft mod Pixelmon. Instead, it features gameplay that can generously be described as a gutted version of Pokémon Go. There are no gyms to battle, plus, you don’t even need to walk around to find Pixelmon, you just tap the screen to make your character walk around. That’s right, they took the core gameplay innovation of Pokémon Go (as in, actually going outside and exploring) and stripped it away.

2. Garfield Go

We’ll give the other ripoffs credit, they realized that part of the appeal of Pokémon Go is the assortment of colorful creatures you collect. Whoever is responsible for Garfield Go clearly did not understand this. Instead, you run around outside looking for treasure. While in Pokémon Go, you use your phone camera to throw Pokéballs at monsters, in Garfield Go, you throw lasagna at the lethargic cartoon cat. You need to actually point your camera around until you find Garfield, and until you do, he endlessly repeats “MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW.” Garfield Go doesn’t even make sense as a concept. I am under 50 so I’m no Garfield expert, but isn’t the whole point of the comic strip that he’s a lazy cat that lounges around the house all day? Why would he be running around outside looking for treasure? I may be thinking too hard about this but I’m at least thinking harder than the people who created this game.

3. Draconius Go

This particular ripoff has the dubious honor of being accused of plagiarism by Niantic itself. The game shamelessly copies concepts like Pokéstops, gyms, Pokéballs, and catching. The monsters featured in-game even use CP points to represent their power, just like Pokémon Go. Niantic was not having it. Draconius Go developer Elyland defended themselves against the clearly baseless accusations by saying, among other ramblings, this:

“When we developed this game, we consulted leading world-class lawyers, and we are 100% certain that Niantic’s claim is unjustified. Niantic’s reaction shows that they consider us as a serious rival. By doing so, they actually prove that our product is better.”

We’re sure Niantic is shaking in their boots, cowering in fear as Draconius Go inevitably becomes the most downloaded app in existence, leaving Pokémon Go as nothing but a faint memory.

4. Go Catch Em All! – Hungry Monster.IO World Chasing Color Dots

Yes, that word-vomit is the actual title of the game. This particular ripoff became infamous after releasing in countries that Pokémon Go hadn’t yet. So many people were fooled into downloading this that it shot up to the top of the App Store charts in countries like Canada and Norway. We don’t necessarily blame people for being fooled either, as the App Store page features screenshots literally taken directly from Pokémon Go. As for the game itself, it’s just Agar.io with Pokémon faces, which again, is copyrighted content.

How Overwatch raised a jaw-dropping amount of money for breast cancer research

Over the past couple of weeks, Blizzard’s Pink Mercy campaign has raised over $12.7 million for breast cancer research. Donations were sent to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in what was the largest corporate donation in the BCRF’s 25-year history. These millions will fund the BCRF’s research into treatment, prevention methods, and the search for a cure for breast cancer.

Blizzard ran the campaign through its hit class shooter Overwatch. For $15, players could purchase an exclusive new pink skin for the hero Mercy, the sales of which went directly to the BRCF. In Overwatch, Mercy is far and away most popular healer in the game, making her thematically fitting for a breast cancer awareness skin.

The runaway success of this campaign is a testament to the generosity of the Overwatch fanbase. For more information on the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, you can check out their website here.

Why Twitter just purged over 70 million accounts

Since May, Twitter brought the ban hammer down on over 70 million accounts. That’s nearly 1 million accounts every single day. This mass digital purge comes in the wake of increased criticism toward Twitter and other social media platforms whose critics say they don’t do enough to protect their users from spam and abuse.

Since May, Twitter brought the ban hammer down on over 70 million accounts. That’s nearly 1 million accounts every single day. The affected accounts mostly consist of spammers, bots, propaganda accounts, and trolls. This mass digital purge comes in the wake of increased criticism toward Twitter and other social media platforms whose critics say they don’t do enough to protect their users from spam and abuse.

As any Twitter user can attest, a huge influx of bots invaded the platform during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. High profile media coverage of Russian propaganda and troll accounts have has severely hurt Twitter’s public image, and this ban wave is undeniably a response to the criticism. While Twitter arguably got off lighter than Facebook (whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg infamously had to testify before Congress), they definitely have a long road ahead of them in regaining user trust. After the bot-infested events of Brexit and the 2016 election, Twitter is taking bot detection much, much more seriously.

Additionally, Twitter purged accounts that spread hate speech or abuse. More and more celebrities are choosing to stay off of Twitter due to the torrents of abuse they receive. For years, Twitter’s term’s of service allowed for banning hate speech and abuse. But recent enforcement has been far more vigorous. It can be extremely tricky to balance the ideas of free speech, hate speech, and abuse, so it remains to be seen how Twitter users react to the crackdown and how, if at all, the user experience improves.

What can we expect from Respawn’s upcoming Star Wars game?

In case you missed it, at E3 EA revealed the title of their upcoming Star Wars game as “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.” The game is being developed by Respawn Entertainment, a team made of up of former Infinity Ward developers who worked on the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” and “Titanfall” series. Details on the game are scarce; there are no trailers or screenshots to be seen and the platforms the game will be playable on have not been announced. Just about the only thing we do know is that the game will be a large-scale single-player adventure where the player controls a rogue Jedi Padawan in hiding after the events of “Revenge of the Sith.”

Since 2013, Disney signed a deal with EA that would grant the publisher the exclusive right to develop and publish Star Wars games. The results of this deal have been shoddy for fans so far, with “Star Wars Battlefront” and the infamously microtransaction-ridden “Star Wars Battlefront 2” receiving middling reviews. Rebellions are built on hope, however, and many fans have placed their hopes in Respawn’s upcoming Star Wars single player epic. Here are a few ways it can give fans the single player adventure they’ve been craving for years:

Show unexplored corners of the galaxy

The Star Wars franchise has shown us countless alien worlds with their own distinct landscapes, creatures, and cultures. From the sandy bazaars of Tatooine to the hellish fires of Mustafar, we’ve seen countless unique planets and alien societies. Instead of returning players to Hoth for the countless time, the game should feature all-new locations to explore. The expanded universe comic books and novels alone feature plenty of locations ripe for the big screen, and Respawn should be unafraid to tread new ground.

Have an in-depth lightsaber combat system

“Star Wars Jedi Academy II: Jedi Outcast” is considered one of the best Star Wars games ever made for its lightsaber combat. The game features many lightsaber styles and techniques, and these different techniques can be combined into combos. These techniques, combined with an assortment of light and dark Force powers, turn each lightsaber duel into a flashy but nuanced fight. Similar to a fighting game, players must anticipate and react to their opponents quickly, as one missed strike could spell death. The fast-paced combat is a near 1:1 match with the choreographed duels seen in the prequel trilogy. “Jedi Outcast” came out 16 years ago, and Star Wars fans are long overdue for another in-depth dueling system. Footage of Jedi Outcast lightsaber duels in action can be viewed here:

Focus on new characters and stories

Despite taking place in a galaxy with limitless possibilities, Star Wars famously recycles themes and character arcs to tie major stories together. Speaking on this method of storytelling, George Lucas has said,

“It’s like poetry. It rhymes. Every stanza rhymes with the last one.”

While the franchise has been home to many iconic and memorable stories, its time for the storytelling to break away from the rhymes and get more experimental. Whether you love it or hate it, last year’s “Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi” told a story that deconstructed all of the storytelling “poetry” told by the original and prequel trilogies. “Fallen Order” should continue this trend by telling its own unique story, free from the rhyme schemes of the rest of the franchise. Additionally, the Star Wars universe allows for an infinite number of character possibilities, so Respawn should focus on creating new characters rather than falling back on old favorites to drive the story. Fan-favorite characters should make brief appearances or cameos only, giving the narrative freedom from establish continuity and allowing Respawn untapped access to the rich Star Wars universe. May the Force be with them.

5 Game Boy Advance games to revisit on your iPhone

If you’re anything like us, you spent countless hours of your childhood on your Game Boy Advance, straining your eyes and spraining your thumbs in search of the next secret level. With emulation, revisiting those classic games on your iPhone is now easier than ever. (Curious how to play retro games on your iOS device? Here’s how.)

The following list will highlight some GBA games that deserve your attention, whether it be for a nostalgic throwback or a fresh new experience. We made this list following two simple rules. First, no Pokémon games are included, because they are too obvious, and we wanted to delve deeper into the GBA library. Second, the games featured do not generally rely on fast button presses or quick reflexes. This is because the touchscreen controls of the iPhone can make action games difficult, hence slower paced games are much easier to play. Without further ado, here are 5 GBA games you should download for your iPhone:

1. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

This quirky RPG stands out from its contemporaries through its unique gameplay and ridiculous story. Building off the foundation laid out by Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario, the game puts a fresh twist on the RPG formula. Players can use carefully timed button presses to both add extra oomph to Mario and Luigi’s attacks and protect them against their enemies. Speaking of enemies, the game features a lot more than just Goombas and Koopas. The game pushes the craziness of Mario’s world to its limit, most notably with bosses like Fawful, a neurotic, Engrish-spouting bean whose villainous monologues include such gems as “I HAVE FURY!” and “And this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom!” This is a must play for fans of Mario or offbeat RPGs.

2. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

The first of many portable entries into the megapopular Kingdom Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories is a must play. The game combines card collecting with action and RPG elements to create a wholly new experience for the franchise. Players control Sora, who fights enemies in real time using a deck of cards that controls his actions. Decks are composed of Keyblade attacks, spells, and summons, which call upon famous Disney and Final Fantasy characters to aid in battle. Players travel between iconic Disney worlds, such as Neverland, the Hundred Acre Wood, and Agrabah. Taking place between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II, the game features the series’ trademark nonsensical and over-the-top storytelling. If you’re as massively hyped for Kingdom Hearts III as the rest of the world, don’t skip over this game.

3. Advance Wars

This criminally overlooked gem is one of the finest games to grace the Game Boy Advance. Players take control of various CO’s (commanding officers) and lead their armies to victory in this turn-based tactics game. Featuring a cartoonish story that is lighthearted without being corny, the game combines charm and accessibility with depth and replayability. A hallmark in strategy game design, the game is very easy to pick up but difficult to master. The game can be enjoyed in short bursts or extended sessions, making it a perfect fit for your iPhone.

4. Fire Emblem

This beloved strategy series was first released in America on the Game Boy Advance, and has since become one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises. Similar to Advance WarsFire Emblem features strategic, grid-based gameplay. However, Fire Emblem distinguishes itself with its greater emphasis on story. The stories featured are grand in scope, with fully realized characters and plots. Through the course of your adventure, you’ll probably become attached to the likable and varied cast of characters. Make sure you keep them safe in battle, however, as Fire Emblem features permanent character death. If a character falls in battle, they will actually permanently die, affecting the rest of the story and preventing them from being used in future missions. This unique, heartbreaking feature adds an element of urgency to an already stellar strategy game.

5. WarioWare Inc: Mega Microgame$

WarioWare is probably the most bizarre series we have ever played. The game features hundreds of “microgames”, minigames with simple objectives like “Dodge!” or “Jump!” that only last a few seconds. While we mentioned earlier that action games are not typically suited for the iPhone’s touchscreen controls, the simple and quick nature of the microgames work well with the touchscreen. The microgames range from straightforward to hilariously bizarre, giving you little time to process the lunacy before being thrust into the next game. Combine this endless variety with an insanely colorful and memorable cast of characters, and you get one of the GBA’s most unique and entertaining games.

Any classics you think we missed? Leave a comment below!

How to get Game Boy games on your iPhone in less than 10 minutes

Play some old school Game Boy Advance games on your favorite Apple device. It’s easy! Just follow these steps.

Seventeen years ago, Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance in America. The system sold millions of copies and was beloved by players throughout the world for its diverse and eclectic game library. Now, you can enjoy your favorite Game Boy Advance classics on your iPhone using an app called gba4ios. Installing this app is incredibly easy and requires no jailbreaking. This guide works with both iPhones and iPads, and will allow you to play Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy games on your device. The installation process is displayed with pictures below:

First, open your preferred browser on your iPhone and head to this link. You should see a screen like this. iPhone X users should choose the second gba4ios option, while all other users should choose the first. Once you tap an option, a button will pop up saying “Install”. Tap the install button, and gba4ios will download to your home screen like any other app would. However, you must first verify the app to use it. Fortunately, this is easy.

Go to your Settings app and select General. Once inside, open Profiles & Device Management. Inside there should be a profile underneath the Enterprise App header. Open this and the icon for gba4ios should be inside. Select the Trust option. This allows you to actually access and open the gba4ios app. Exit the settings app and open the gba4ios app from your home screen.

Once opened, your app should look something like this (note: We already downloaded a few games, which is why their titles appear). In order to download games, tap the magnifying glass icon in the top right. This will open a web browser within the app. Game Boy game files are called “roms”, so enter the name of the game you want into the search bar followed by rom (ex. “Super Mario Advance rom”). Numerous websites will then pop up. Choose one and download your rom. If done correctly, the title of the game will appear as shown above. Simply tap on the name of the game to play it.

And that’s it! You can now play Game Boy games on your iDevice.
