Ubisoft’s new release is delayed for good reason

Ubisoft has decided to delay two of the games they had planned for release. Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence, two highly anticipated free-to-play mobile shooters.

Ubisoft seems to have taken to heart the idea that well-done things take time. By delaying several games to give more time to the studios to polish them, spacing out their releases, it seems they have decided to take better care of their work. Ensuring the quality of their games, putting more effort into their projects, so as not to give the impression of doing careless or rushed things. Something they have only confirmed in their latest financial results.

Although they have been doing well so far this fiscal year, Ubisoft has decided to delay two of the games they had planned for release. Rainbow Six Mobile and The Division Resurgence, two highly anticipated free-to-play mobile shooters, were expected to be released before March 2025, but they did not have a specific date yet. Now Ubisoft confirms that they will be released during the next fiscal year, which runs from April 2025 to March 2026.

Their reasons for delaying them have been to give them the necessary time for the games to meet their expectations. And that is why, according to Ubisoft, this fiscal year has gone quite well for them. With net income above their initial goals, reaching 290 million euros instead of a projected 275 million, they are on track to resolve the disappointing fiscal period of 2022-2023, where, due to losses, they ended up canceling several projects. Some of them high profile.

To maintain good numbers, Ubisoft has a few releases for the remaining fiscal year. On August 30th, Star Wars Outlaws will be released, but it doesn’t end there. On November 15th, they will launch Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and in 2025, they plan to release Anno 117: Pax Romana. These titles are intended to help them round out their fiscal year.

Therefore, despite the delay of its two mobile shooters, it doesn’t seem that Ubisoft will struggle to meet its economic expectations. Game development is difficult, and delays are often inevitable. Especially when we’re talking about large multinational companies where release dates are set from places far removed from the day-to-day realities of production. This is something we’ve seen today with the wave of delays announced by Ubisoft for their games. However, one of these delays has caught our attention, and not without good reason.

Ubisoft has announced that a “major game,” previously planned to release before the end of March 2024, has been delayed. How long? Until sometime before the end of March 2025. While they haven’t mentioned any specific name, everyone quickly assumed which game it is. Because with only a few months left until that hypothetical release, there’s only one announced game on the horizon: Star Wars Outlaw.

This may seem like a long shot because the game is announced but doesn’t have a release date yet, but nothing could be further from the truth. As early as May last year, even before Star Wars Outlaws was announced, multiple sources confirmed that Ubisoft was planning to release an open-world Star Wars game. And its release date was scheduled for early 2024. Furthermore, two different sources have informed Kotaku that the intention was, or is, to publish the game before the end of the current fiscal year. That is, before March 31, 2024.

In addition to all of this, the statements from Kotaku’s sources and what Ubisoft has said also seem to align perfectly. While Ubisoft has stated that they had a major game planned to be released before the end of the current fiscal year, the extraordinarily positive fiscal balance has led them to delay it to maximize the value of their creation. On the other hand, Kotaku’s sources claim that the game may be too ambitious and could ultimately be delayed until the next fiscal year to ensure its final quality.

In other words, while we can’t confirm that the delayed game is Star Wars: Outlaws, all signs point to it being the most likely candidate. The only date we have is a vague 2024, and even with delays, they could still make it. They have nine months of the fiscal year to meet it. And if that helps the game to be released in its best possible version, it’s undoubtedly good news.

However, what many probably didn’t expect is that the Switch would extend its life by another year and a half beyond the six and a half years it has already been around.

As stated by Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, to Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper that is also the world’s largest financial newspaper, Nintendo will continue to focus on Switch until the end of the current fiscal year, which concludes in March 2024. For the more alarmed, this might sound like Nintendo has no intention of releasing a successor to Nintendo Switch until, at least, April 2025. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Similar to how Sony and Microsoft continue releasing games for previous-generation consoles, what Furukawa means here is that even if they launch the successor to the console, they will continue supporting it with new games.

This only serves to confirm the rumors that a hypothetical Switch 2 would arrive in the second half of 2024. Having showcased a series of demos at the previous Gamescom, albeit only among developers, it appears that Nintendo is already aiming for its next-generation leap. However, as Furukawa himself states, not at the expense of leaving behind those who are already enjoying their excellent current console.
