The list of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 has undergone significant changes with the arrival of Lilo & Stitch and Mission Impossible: Final Judgment, which have dethroned several Marvel productions. Lilo & Stitch, the live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic, has grossed $772.5 million worldwide, positioning itself as the third highest-grossing film of the year. Its release in Spain on May 23 has been triumphant, maintaining notable success in local theaters.
For its part, Minecraft, which debuted in early April, has grossed $951.3 million, but it could lose its second place to the Disney movie if Lilo & Stitch continues on the upward path it has shown during its first weeks. This change in the box office landscape has made the film directed by Dean Fleischer Camp the main threat to Minecraft, which has begun to show signs of stagnation in the revenue charts.
Mission Impossible 8, the latest installment of the famous action saga, has proven to maintain its success, grossing $450.4 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of this year. In fifth place is Captain America: Brave New World, with $415.1 million, followed by Thunderbolts, which has reached $374.5 million.
Ballerina fails where John Wick has always succeeded
Despite the good reception of these productions, none have been able to match Ne Zha 2, a Chinese animated film that has grossed $1.898 billion and will premiere in Spain on June 20. In contrast, the John Wick spin-off, titled Ballerina and starring Ana de Armas, has had a modest performance, accumulating only $51 million in its opening weekend.
On the other hand, Spanish cinema has also had its standout moments, with Sirat, trance in the desert reaching fourth place at the box office and La buena suerte by Gracia Querejeta appearing in ninth position. Next week, the arrival of How to Train Your Dragon could once again disrupt the market, with the live-action film based on the popular DreamWorks saga, which promises to be one of the big titans of the year.
