Video games have diverse trajectories; some start with a significant impact and quickly fade away, while others endure over the years thanks to their communities and the dedication of developers. Interestingly, several titles, despite their age, continue to be updated and maintained, even 20, 30, or even 40 years after their release.

The longest-running MMORPG in history

In this context, games like Klondike, released in 1984, have demonstrated remarkable longevity, receiving graphical enhancements and new features that have maintained their relevance over time. On the other hand, NetHack, dating back to 1987, continues to receive regular updates and has an active player base. Its random content generation mechanism ensures that the experience is always new and challenging.

In turn, GemStone IV, known as one of the oldest MMORPGs still in operation since its launch in 1988, enjoys constant development. With a team of approximately 40 people, its goal is to survive another three decades in this dynamic world of video games. On the other hand, Kingdom of Drakkar and Genesis, both released in 1989, also continue to be relevant, with recent updates that have refreshed the experience for their players.

The evolution of these games, which continue to receive support, demonstrates the passion of both their developers and players. In some cases, like with Age of Empires 2, interest has been rekindled thanks to remastered editions and constant expansions. These examples underscore the unique ability of video games to adapt and endure over time, reflecting the dedication of the communities that support them.

A new MMORPG from one of the most iconic franchises of Sony PlayStation has leaked

Sony is diversifying its Horizon universe with the development of Horizon Steel Frontiers, an MMORPG that moves away from the stories featuring Aloy, as well as the recent virtual reality game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. This new proposal is in an early promotional phase, with a leaked video of more than ten minutes showing cooperative combat, vast natural landscapes, and the collection of weapons from enormous mechanical machines.

An MMO developed externally to Sony itself

The MMO will be set in a region known as Deathlands, which takes inspiration from the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico, and is notable for allowing players to create their own characters. In this shared world, thousands of users will be able to experience both cooperation and rivalry. The leaked images, which mix cinematics with pre-alpha gameplay, reveal not only the combat but also the possibility of transporting found weapons on the backs of mounts, an element that promises to enrich the gameplay.

Horizon Steel Frontiers will be officially presented at the G-Star 2025 event, which will take place in South Korea from November 13 to 16. Surprisingly, this MMORPG will be available on PC, iOS, and Android, but not for PS5, which has generated various speculations within the gaming community. A release date has not yet been defined, although more information is expected to be revealed during the event.

The director of Guerrilla Games, Jan-Bart van Beek, emphasized that the concept behind Horizon Steel Frontiers focuses on the thrill of facing colossal machines, an aspect that has been fundamental in the original saga. Additionally, it seems that more multiplayer experiences are being developed within the Horizon universe, which could indicate that a main sequel starring Aloy is still far from materializing.

On October 27, 2000, Dinamic Multimedia launched La Prisión, a title that has established itself as the first MMORPG in Spain, marking a milestone in the history of national video games. Its arrival was a bold bet in a complicated technological context, characterized by limited Internet connections and a market still largely unfamiliar with monthly subscriptions, which included an initial payment of 3,990 pesetas and a monthly fee of 1,000 pesetas.

A very unique video game

The Prison was distinguished by its focus on social interaction, fostering the creation of active communities that resembled early social networks. Although the game faced numerous technical issues after its launch, it managed to establish an environment where players could communicate and interact in novel ways for the time.

The project went through three significant stages: it was launched by Dinamic, later managed by Cryo Networks, and finally, maintained by its original creators until 2018. Despite its modest commercial success, the legacy of La Prisión endures among its fans, recalling memorable moments, including celebrations and important events within the game.

Currently, a new project called Revivir La Prisión aims to recover the essence of the original game using modern technologies like Unreal Engine. This community effort aims to revitalize the experience of La Prisión, offering new features and design improvements, such as interactive maps and NPCs that will enrich the gaming environment.

Developers have begun public testing, and although the release plans were scheduled for 2021, the preliminary results are promising. It remains to be seen whether this new approach can attract both old players and a new audience, thus revitalizing a classic that remains significant in the history of Spanish video games.

World of Warcraft is getting closer to coming to consoles

Blizzard Entertainment is making significant changes to World of Warcraft, aiming to simplify its gameplay and facilitate a possible adaptation to consoles in the future. Recent features implemented include ability rotations that require pressing only one key and the removal of community add-ons like WeakAuras in the upcoming expansion titled ‘Midnight’. These modifications have sparked speculation about the possibility of WoW coming to console platforms.

Simpler Fights

Players remain cautious about the great challenge of adapting the targeting system and the interaction mechanics of WoW, which, unlike other MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV, rely on clicking with the mouse to select characters and objects. This complicates the experience when using a controller, raising doubts about how combat could be carried out in a console gaming environment.

On the other hand, Blizzard has been collaborating with Xbox, which increases the chances of WoW being adapted to other platforms. Although the fan community shows interest in this possibility, questions still remain about the feasibility of making this transition without compromising the essence of the game. Some players believe that, despite the changes, the complexity of WoW’s combat system may pose challenges for a proper experience on console.

Although the idea of bringing World of Warcraft to consoles has gained traction, there are no concrete claims regarding it. Blizzard is in the process of revitalizing its classic MMORPG, and the next steps will be crucial in determining the future of the game in this new realm.

This MMORPG has doubled the average number of players on PC thanks to the announcement of a small change

Since its launch, New World: Aeternum has had a trajectory full of ups and downs, especially under Amazon’s management. However, the MMORPG has experienced a notable resurgence in its player base, increasing from an average of 7,000-8,000 players in July to over 15,000 currently on PC, not counting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms. A game with a great start, but that has fallen over time. This growth is largely due to the announcement of Season 10, titled Nighthaven, which will be released on October 13. Since its launch, New World: Aeternum has had a trajectory full of ups and downs, especially under Amazon’s management. However, the MMORPG has experienced a remarkable resurgence in its player base, increasing from an average of 7,000-8,000 players in July to over 15,000 currently on PC, not counting the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.

A game with a great start, but that has fallen over time

This growth is largely due to the announcement of Season 10, titled Nighthaven, which will be released on October 13. This new season promises to add a permanent area with a dark fantasy theme, as well as a rich story, new raids, and a game mode called Catacombs. A new maximum level (70) and a team score system (800) will also be introduced, raising expectations among the gaming community.

The recent influx of players, combined with the server merger, has led to long queues and performance issues in the game’s cities, reflecting both the excitement for the new content and concerns about the gaming experience. Players have reported waiting in queues of up to 500-600 people to enter the servers, something unthinkable in recent times.

Despite the management issues on Amazon’s part and the community’s perception of the game’s state, there is a positive sentiment among many players. For some, New World: Aeternum has become a refuge where they can disconnect and live adventures while exploring new mechanics and geographies promised by Season 10.

With the arrival of Nighthaven, it is claimed that there will be great interest in the new content. Rumors suggest that this could be more of an expansion rollout than just a seasonal update, raising concerns about whether the current game infrastructure will be able to handle the resurgence of its player base. As the release date approaches, many hope that New World can maintain its revitalization without compromising the quality of the gaming experience.

The MMORPG Ship of Heroes launches today, September 22, on Steam at a price of 60 dollars. This decision has sparked negative criticism in the gaming community, which considers the cost excessive for a title that does not present itself as a AAA quality game.

We could have spent 60 dollars on worse things

Despite having formed a small community of followers eager to try the title, the pricing proposal has led many to question the viability of the game. Comments on forums and social media reflect a shared frustration, with players expressing their discontent: 60 dollars and a subscription for this garbage, writes a user on Steam, highlighting the negative perception towards the business model of Heroic Games Corporation.

The controversy has deepened with accusations that the developer is censoring unfavorable critiques on forums like Reddit, which has intensified distrust among players. Some members of the development team have defended their strategy, claiming that the high community engagement validates their decisions. However, critics challenge this stance, arguing that unfavorable reactions have been ignored.

In response to the criticism, a representative of Heroic Games stated: No constructive criticism has been removed or banned, although he emphasized that many negative opinions do not provide constructive suggestions. The company stands firm that the increase in wish lists is indicative of a general acceptance of the announced price.

With the imminent launch, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect the commercial reception of Ship of Heroes in a market where user reviews spare no one.

Old School RuneScape is facing a persistent problem related to violations of its service rules, as many players resort to buying gold and in-game items through black market sellers, in a phenomenon known as real-world trading. This practice has generated a plague of bots in the game, which are dedicated to collecting gold for later sale. The situation has led the developer Jagex to tighten sanctions against those who buy gold, a decision recently announced.

Buying or selling gold in RuneScape can be expensive

In a statement, Jagex emphasized that gold buying is now clearly prohibited, but historically, lighter penalties have been applied to buyers compared to sellers. However, the company has changed its policy and now buyers will face harsher sanctions, including item confiscation and permanent bans. “Players are not expected to get away with just a warning,” warned Jagex representatives.

The reaction from the OSRS community has been mostly positive. Many players expressed their enthusiasm on platforms like Reddit, where comments like “Incredible news! Thank you!” have been common. However, skepticism persists about Jagex’s ability to effectively implement these new measures. Some users recalled previous promises from the company, including similar efforts in 2021 and 2007, which did not lead to significant results.

While most players applaud Jagex’s action against buyers, there is concern about the future effectiveness of these policies. Players in the OSRS environment have taken a cautious approach, waiting to see if Jagex will fulfill its promises this time for more stringent penalties against real-world trading of gold in the game.

Nintendo intensifies its offensive against the creators of Palworld by registering a new patent

The legal dispute between Nintendo and the independent developer Pocketpair, related to the game Palworld, has captured the attention of the video game world. The legal dispute between Nintendo and the independent developer Pocketpair, related to the game Palworld, has captured the attention of the gaming world. At the center of this conflict is the recent approval of a patent by Nintendo in the United States, which could have repercussions beyond Pocketpair’s title.

This patent could affect virtually the entire video game industry

The patent, registered in March 2023, describes a system in which players can summon a second character, referred to as a ‘sub character’, to fight enemies. Although this mechanic may seem specific, experts point out that it is so generic that it could apply to numerous game genres, from action to MMORPGs, potentially impacting future releases from multiple developers.

Although the patent is not retroactive, meaning it cannot be applied to games already on the market, its existence poses a serious dilemma for independent developers. These studios often lack the necessary resources to face legal actions from large corporations like Nintendo, which could discourage innovation. The concern goes beyond Palworld; any new game, DLC, or expansion that uses similar mechanics could face legal issues.

The situation becomes even more complicated when considering the already established titles that include summoning mechanics, such as Diablo IV and Elden Ring, which would not be immediately affected, but imply that the ground for new creations becomes uncertain. The possibility that Nintendo could use this patent in a legal context has raised alarms among developers, fearful of a patent arms race that could limit creativity in the industry.

In an environment where large companies have the advantage in terms of legal resources, the community of small developers faces an uncertain future. This situation not only has immediate consequences but could also have a lasting deterrent effect on innovation in the sector.

The MMO landscape is challenging. The decline in the number of users has led many studios to shut down servers when the investment becomes unsustainable. This is the context in which the YouTuber Bind decided to explore the MMO Dark Ages, a title released in 1999 that, in his own words, was on the brink of extinction. During his adventure, Bind discovered an active, albeit small, community that showed a deep connection to the game, which led him to reflect on the decline of these types of online experiences.

We have to go back!

His first video, which documented his experience in Dark Ages, has surprisingly resonated with viewers, generating an increase in game activity. More than three million views have driven both the return of former players and the arrival of new ones, thus revitalizing an environment that seemed desolate. Activities that had fallen into disuse, such as classes at the game’s university, have filled up again, suggesting a rebirth of the community.

Despite the optimism of some veterans celebrating this renewal, others remain skeptical, arguing that the game does not deserve to be saved in its current state. A comment in the forums highlights that the community has been “used” as a resource for Bind’s content, which has sparked a debate about the legitimacy of this resurgence. Furthermore, the company behind Dark Ages has begun to reactivate on social media, indicating a possible shift in its approach towards the community.

As time goes on, it remains to be seen whether this growth will be sustained or if it will be just a temporary phenomenon caused by the coverage of changes in Dark Ages. This situation recalls the delicate balance that persists in the world of MMOs, where investment in the community can be as crucial as technical support.

The creators of the biggest failure in EA's history believe it could have been a success if it hadn't been for EA

The announcement of the early closure of Anthem in 2026 has sparked intense debate within the video game industry, reigniting the Stop Killing Games initiative. This MMORPG, which was launched in 2019 and received largely negative feedback, will be extinguished after seven years of existence, leaving players without the possibility of accessing its content once the server is shut down.

A failure they knew was going to happen

Mark Darrah, former executive producer of Anthem, has expressed his discontent regarding this situation. During a recent interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Darrah explained that the game could have been designed differently, allowing for its continuity even after the developers closed support. However, he indicated that this would be complicated given the current structures of multiplayer game design.

Darrah made an analogy with toxic waste management, suggesting that, just as society has decided not to allow chemical companies to pollute ecosystems, it should also consider the costs associated with preserving video games. “It’s a cost we must be willing to bear,” he said. As an example, he mentioned Destiny’s peer-to-peer hosting system as a possible solution to keep games operational after their creators withdraw support.

The disappearance of games like Anthem and The Crew not only affects players who have invested time and money, but it is also a blow to developers who see their efforts and creativity vanish. Darrah suggested that, with some compromises in terms of quality and player experience, it would be possible to avoid the definitive closure of these titles, raising questions about the future and sustainability of games in the industry.
