Recently, a age rating leak hinted that the first Resident Evil was going to be released in its original 1996 version for PC. And that’s exactly what happened. But those who were expecting a release on Steam will be disappointed. GOG, the digital store for preserving old games from the creators of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, has made the game’s port. They have it exclusively, with numerous improvements, to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible on modern PCs.
Of course, the good news doesn’t end here. The entire Resident Evil franchise revolutionized the survival horror genre, something we will be able to experience throughout 2024. Because GOG has confirmed that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis will also be available on the platform this year, being available for all PC players. Offering us an experience exactly like the original, but without frame drops or texture loading issues.
While it is true that all three games have remakes, these ports were really necessary as a preservation and accessibility measure. Although the first Resident Evil is accessible on PlayStation Plus and its remake is quite faithful to the original, it was not available as a standalone download on any service. Capcom is not willing to let a single Resident Evil go unnoticed and escape the present. We don’t blame them. Most of these games are excellent and have aged in an enviable way. With the few changes they make with the remakes, they adapt them perfectly to modern sensibilities, turning them into new versions that do not replace the originals.
That doesn’t mean that the originals don’t have a little place in our hearts. Not without reason, they are pioneers of modern survival horror games, although it’s true that they have controls that can be a bit tough at times, they are still fabulous on their own. That’s why any news related to a return of the original Resident Evil games is always a cause for celebration. And that’s exactly what has happened.
Resident Evil has received a PEGI 18 rating for PC in Europe. If this seems strange to you, even stranger is that we’re talking about the first Resident Evil, the one from 1996, and that the date it was registered was June 18, 2024. This suggests a possible re-release of the game that we still know nothing about, but that we’re certainly looking forward to.
This, however, has a pretty distinct peculiarity. Resident Evil was already released on PC at the time. Resident Evil is no longer the franchise we knew back in the day. For better or worse, it has evolved over time. Resident Evil 4 was a very evident and abrupt shift towards action. Resident Evil 7 was a return to the origins of horror, but it doesn’t feel the same as the old games. Something that has value in itself, but doesn’t take away that particular itch.
Because in this house we are big fans of the first three Resident Evil games. The ones from the original PlayStation. And not just out of nostalgia. We can replay them today and they are still as fantastic and original as their equally excellent remakes. But it’s true that these games are showing their age in terms of graphics. This makes us wish that someone would make a classic Resident Evil game with today’s tools. Prayers that have been answered, even when we thought it was impossible.
Those who have heard our prayers are not Capcom, but SFB Games. A studio known for their puzzle games that has decided to venture into the classic survival horror genre with a game called Crow Country.
Very inspired by the survival horror games of the first PlayStation, both in graphics and gameplay. In this game, we play as Mara Forest, who must investigate an abandoned amusement park, Crow Country, to find its missing founder, Edward Crow. As it is evident, we will not take long to discover that there is more than meets the eye. And we will find ourselves searching for keys and mechanisms while fighting and dodging terrible creatures that seek to end our lives.
Part of the appeal of Crow Country is that, while it is inspired by Resident Evil and survival horrors from the original PlayStation era, it does not fully imitate them. In Crow Country, we can move the camera, disable tank controls, and there is no inventory management. The game focuses more on exploration with excellent level design, a clue system that forces us to take notes or remember them if we don’t want to go back to a safe point to remember them, and particularly resilient enemy combat.
This is also contributed by the fact that the aesthetics of Crow Country are not those of classic Resident Evil. There is the decay and rust of these, but its lowpoly art direction is more reminiscent of a refined version of the original Final Fantasy 7. An incredible nostalgia boost that works extremely well with its scenarios, which are presented as small dioramas made for the world’s most sinister Pinypon.
Actually, although the scenarios are relatively small, they are very compact. They are full of objects, enemies, secrets, and doors. This makes them extremely dense and interesting to explore, even though they are quite small in size.
That’s why the game is reminiscent of classic Resident Evil games. Combat is in the background and is more of a last resort than something we use constantly and consciously. Not so much because of scarcity, since we can replenish our pistol ammunition whenever we want, but because of the resistance and quantity of our enemies. Making it wiser to simply clear our path to be able to advance without fear.
If you like classic Resident Evil games, Crow Country is the game you should be playing. It’s beautiful, it’s fun, and it perfectly captures the sensations of those first three installments of Capcom’s classic. So whether it’s nostalgia or because you’re in love with that kind of design, you should play Crow Country.
Capcom confirms that they are already working on the next remake of Resident Evil, although our question is, exactly what game?

When asked if Capcom intends to continue making game remakes, Anpo replied, “Yes. We have released three remakes so far, and all of them have been very well received. Since this allows modern audiences to play these games, it’s something that makes me happy as someone who loves making these games, and I want to continue doing so.” However, regarding which game will be remade next, he stated that “what game we will remake in the future is something we will announce in the future, so please stay tuned for that.”
What will be the choice for this remake is not at all evident. The logical choice would be Resident Evil 5, but its mixed reception, drastic departure from Resident Evil 4, and the controversy surrounding its African setting could cost it that privilege. Another popular option could be a remake of Resident Evil – Code Veronica. A fabulous Dreamcast game that would greatly benefit from a remake treatment. Although the possibility of remaking Resident Evil 1, when the previous one dates back to 2002, is something we shouldn’t overlook either. Even if it remains a delight by today’s standards.
At the end of the day, as Anpo says, we’ll have to wait to know more. Especially because Resident Evil has a broad, rich history filled with games worth rescuing. We all have periods in the past where we enjoyed things in a special way, and that’s why it’s common to have a special attachment to certain moments in our lives, associating them with specific points in history. In the case of video games, nostalgia for the era of the first PlayStation seems to be a common particular case, especially when we talk about two specific franchises: Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. But what if we told you that a game blending both has been announced?
Developed by SFB Games, its name is Crow Country. It’s a survival horror game with a low-poly aesthetic that reminds us of PlayStation 1 titles, like a stylized version of the models from Final Fantasy VII. However, in all other aspects, it’s pure Resident Evil.
This isn’t even something the game hides. According to the game’s creative director, Adam Vian, what they aimed for is a “Resident Evil / Final Fantasy VII aesthetic.” He also added that the game includes “locked doors, rusty keys, a health meter in the form of a heart rate monitor, a nightmarish atmosphere, and environments that evoke pre-rendered art (but are actually 3D).” In other words, it’s a nostalgic dream of the first PlayStation era.
Set in 1990, the game invites us to investigate the disappearance of a man named Edward Crow. To do so, we’ll have to visit Crow Country, an amusement park closed two years ago under mysterious circumstances. As Mara Forest, it will be our obligation to uncover the secrets hidden within the park and, more importantly, to survive.

Who doesn’t like The Muppetts and Sesame Street? That gentle, witty, sweet, but not pastel tone, where things are treated with intelligence, humor and affection, treating children and not so children as beings capable of thinking and not as idiots. Maybe that’s why horror games that present us with adorable pets that turn out to be monsters that want to eat our faces have been so popular for years. They’re scary, but not too scary, they appeal to our nostalgia and, moreover, they scratch at that same point that those couple of masterpieces that so many different generations have grown up with do.
That’s why it was only a matter of time before someone was more explicitly inspired by both. And while they were at it, what if instead of making a horror game, they made a survival horror in the style of Resident Evil or Silent Hill? That’s what John and Evan Szymanski must have thought and the result was My Friendly Neighborhood.
The premise of the game is simple. We are Gordon, a handyman who must enter an old building where the My Friendly Neighborhood show – a sort of Sesame Street that, after being cancelled a month earlier due to a horrible act of cannibalism among dolls, has started rebroadcasting old episodes directly to local TV sets. We wander in there to see what’s going on with the antenna only to discover that, to the surprise of no one reading this, our friendly neighbors may be our neighbors, but they are not friendly, and just as they were cancelled for devouring each other, they have now decided that it sounds like a better plan to devour us.
Our duty is simple: get them to stop broadcasting episodes and run away from there. To do it without getting eaten, not so much. With survival horror mechanics in the style of Resident Evil 4, we have limited ammunition, a character that moves relatively slowly and slowly, an inventory with a limited amount of space that we will have to manage and some dolls that, besides being extremely convincing in their cuteness -they could be real puppets from a Saturday morning show-, resist more shots than we could expect in the first instance. The game was released last July 18 and is available on Steam.
