We already know the cost of Xiaomi’s new electric car: Can you afford it?

Xiaomi’s CEO dared to claim that the standard version of the SU7 surpasses Tesla’s Model 3 in over 90% of its specifications. It only costs around…

Tesla has a problem in China. The first one is called BYD, one of the largest EV manufacturers in the world, but it is joined by a completely unexpected rival: Xiaomi, the great consumer technology manufacturer of the last decade.

Xiaomi, a company better known for its smartphones and other gadgets than for its cars, presented its first electric vehicle for the Chinese market last year. But the price of the new SU7 was not announced until its official presentation on Thursday, and it is lower than many expected.

Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, said that the standard version of the SU7 will be sold for $30,000 (215,900 yuan), although as CNBC pointed out, this means that each vehicle will be sold at a loss.

The price is remarkable because it is considerably lower than Tesla’s Model 3, which starts at $34,000 (245,900 yuan) in China.

Xiaomi wants to beat Tesla on its own turf

Lei dared to claim that the standard version of the SU7 surpasses Tesla’s Model 3 in more than 90% of its specifications, and added that the new car offers a minimum driving range of 700 kilometers, which is about 93 kilometers more than the Model 3.

The first EVs from Tesla’s only factory in China rolled off the production line in 2019. More recently, it has been cutting the price of its cars to better compete with Guangdong-based BYD and other EV manufacturers in the lucrative Chinese market.

BYD sold a record-breaking 526,000 battery-powered vehicles worldwide in the last quarter of last year, overtaking Tesla for the first time in a single quarter. But for the whole of 2023, Tesla is in the lead.

Tesla’s management team will be closely monitoring the Chinese market with even more interest in the coming months, especially because the first sales figures suggest that there is a great interest in the SU7 after Xiaomi reported on Thursday more than 50,000 orders in its first 27 minutes of availability. Deliveries will begin next month.

Xiaomi plans to invest $10 billion in the automotive sector over the next decade, and the company has stated that it could enter the global market in the next two years. It also aims to become one of the top five car manufacturers in the world in the next 15 to 20 years.

We already know what the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will be like: first look at the smartphone

Last year, Xiaomi launched its new range of mobile phones, the Xiaomi 14 series, in China. Those of us who have been Android users “since we were little” were eagerly awaiting the release of the 14 series in the rest of the world, especially to avoid importing the phone from China, paying customs duties, and then formatting the device with a custom ROM. What a hassle.

And this will be on February 25th, the date when we will be able to buy the 14 and 14 Pro models from Xiaomi… But they won’t be the only ones. The website Android Planet recently revealed that Xiaomi will also launch an Ultra version of this range, which can be purchased with a discount coupon at least from the official Xiaomi website in the Netherlands.

While up to this point nothing was known about this new model (apart from the fact that it will be more expensive, as we all expect), a recent leak of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra renders, published on the website MySmartPrice, shows us how this new and shiny mobile will look, as well as some of its features.

To start, at least one version of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will have a leather back. This will include a round and huge camera module from the brand Leica, which will be surrounded by a silver bezel on the outside, as well as a golden and a black bezel.

Both the power button and volume controls of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will be located on the right side of the phone. The device’s power button will have a textured finish to improve grip and feel. In addition, it can be observed that the left side of the device will be completely clean, except for the mobile antenna marks located on both sides.

The position of the speaker grille and main microphone of Xiaomi 14 Ultra changes compared to the design of Xiaomi 13 Ultra. Both will still be located at the bottom of the device, next to the USB-C port, but in alternate positions. Interestingly, the top part shown in the renders only shows the secondary speaker, without any trace of the secondary microphone and the infrared emitter (which does not mean that they will not be included in the final version).

Beyond these images, there is not much more information available about this new model from Xiaomi’s 14 series at the moment. But don’t worry, the 25th is just around the corner and we will know much more soon.

Xiaomi has just unveiled its new electric car to the world, and as we suspected, it looks like a plagiarism

Xiaomi has just announced its plans to enter the oversaturated Chinese market for electric vehicles and compete with automotive giants Tesla and Porsche with a car model in which it claims to have invested over 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) in development.

The company’s car model, known as Xiaomi SU7, “is in the testing production phase and will be available in the national market in a few months,” said CEO Lei Jun in a Twitter post. “The price has not been finalized yet.”

A car that looks too much like the Porsche Taycan

Pronounced “Sue Qi” in Mandarin, the Xiaomi SU7 surpasses Porsche’s Taycan and Tesla’s Model S in acceleration and other metrics, Lei said during a three-hour presentation on Thursday.

He also expressed bold ambitions to become a leader in the industry, including in autonomous driving, and pointed out that the design team of the SU7 previously worked at BMW and Mercedes Benz.

The start of sales is scheduled for 2024, after more than three years of development, during which electric vehicles have taken off in the competitive Chinese market and domestic manufacturers have begun to differentiate their products with ambitious offers of car-compatible technology.

This is a potential advantage area for Xiaomi, which is best known for its smartphones and appliances. Xiaomi’s goal is to create a smart ecosystem: “Human x Car x Home”.

The SU7 will integrate with Xiaomi’s smartphones and Internet-connected appliances, the CEO assured. And he emphasized the company’s efforts to ensure data privacy between devices and create a car that exceeds US rear-end collision safety standards.

She said that the vehicle will also be compatible with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, CarPlay, and AirPlay. The American giant, which has been speculated about a car for five years now, still hasn’t taken the plunge.
