The co-founder of New Blood Interactive, Dave Oshry, has shared his opinion on the financial viability of game distribution platforms, stating that Steam is undoubtedly the most profitable for the company.

In a recent conversation with RPG Site, Oshry emphasized that porting games to consoles is a complicated task that generates “much less” in sales compared to what they achieve through Steam. Despite this, the New Blood team continues to port their games to other platforms, but they do so mainly to satisfy their players.

What compensates the most is the PC and specifically, Steam

Oshry pointed out that the decision to bring their games to Xbox or PlayStation is not solely driven by financial interests, but by the desire to please the gaming community.

“We do it because our players want it, right?” expressed the co-founder. This dedication to fans highlights New Blood’s commitment not only to profitability but also to user experience.

A encouraging aspect for developers has been the reception of development kits for Nintendo’s new console, known as Switch 2. According to Oshry, this new kit is not drastically different from the previous one, which has allowed the studio to get their game Dusk running at 120fps with mouse controls. “Dusk on Switch 2 works great,” he stated, suggesting a good adaptation of the game to the new platform.

On another note, New Blood has decided to venture into the RPG genre with Dungeons of Dusk, an adaptation of their popular title Dusk. The demo is available for free as part of the Steam Next Fest, and the full game is expected to be released this year. Additionally, GOG reaffirms its commitment to game preservation, stating that “the future of preservation is decided by the players who care.”

A game with the DNA of Diablo 2

Speaking of new projects, Moon Beast Productions, made up of former Diablo 2 developers, is working on an RPG titled Darkhaven. This ambitious game will focus on procedurally generated sandbox worlds, promising features such as deformable terrain, mining, and mod support, along with options for solo play or massive multiplayer mode. Currently, Darkhaven’s Kickstarter campaign has raised $200,000 of a $500,000 goal, with 25 days left to reach the target.

Susan Hu, also co-founder of Moon Beast, expressed her mixed feelings about competing with her own past creations and Blizzard’s remastering. However, the developers have made it clear that their intention is not simply to recreate the Diablo experience, but to offer an innovative proposal that combines elements of modern survival games.

These initiatives highlight a vibrant cycle in the gaming industry, where legends of the past intertwine with future projects and player interest continues to grow.

Diablo 4 wants to solve one of its biggest problems with its upcoming expansion: loot saturation

Blizzard Entertainment is preparing a significant expansion for its popular game Diablo 4, titled Lord of Hatred, which will be released on April 28. One of the highlights of this expansion is the introduction of a crafting system inspired by the classic Diablo 2. This new system will allow players to use the Horadric Cube to recycle and create new items, thus altering the loot acquisition dynamics in the game.

The accumulation of loot is a problem and they are aware of it

Diablo 4 players have expressed their frustration over the loot saturation in their inventories, especially in the late stages of the game, where legendaries no longer feel special due to an abundance of items. The implementation of the Horadric Cube could change that, offering new and exciting ways to interact with loot. In its current form, this system is expected to alleviate the burden of picking up items that often turn out to be useless.

During the recent Spotlight for the 30th anniversary of Diablo, brief details about this new crafting system were revealed. Players will be able to not only recycle unique items but also convert lower-quality objects into legendary ones, which promises to reintegrate the excitement of finding loot even at advanced levels of the game. This powerful system could lead to a more varied and less predictable gaming experience, in contrast to other titles like Path of Exile 2, where the gameplay tends to be more linear.

In summary, the Horadric Cube and the new crafting system are intended to enrich the gameplay of Diablo 4, offering more opportunities to find and improve items throughout the adventure. With the Lord of Hatred expansion on the horizon, fans are eager to see how this mechanic will transform their experience in the Diablo universe. Additionally, the expansion may bring more surprises with various options to explore in the use of the cube, which could redefine character building and the quest for legendary items.

In a revealing week for video game fans, Blizzard Entertainment has surprised the world with the release of the first expansion for Diablo II in 25 years, titled Reign of the Warlock. This novelty is available exclusively for those who own the remaster, Diablo II Resurrected, giving players a reason to relive the nostalgia of what many consider the best installment of the saga.

Want more? Then play

The expansion introduces the new class of the Warlock, an addition that marks a milestone in the long history of the game. According to Matthew Cederquist, the lead producer at Blizzard, there are still millions of players enjoying Diablo II daily, which has prompted the company to explore new possibilities.

Cederquist emphasizes that the release not only celebrates the 30th anniversary of the series but also seeks to gauge the community’s reaction to the inclusion of additional content, which could pave the way for future expansions.

The developers have kept the plans for the Brujo a secret and have expressed their commitment to honoring the legacy of the original title, released in 1999. Timothy Vasconcellos, the lead designer, has pointed out that it is vital for any new class to feel like an organic part of the game and not like a foreign element. In this regard, Blizzard refuses to “ruin the Mona Lisa“, suggesting that every step will be taken with caution and consideration.

Although the arrival of the Warlock is the main attraction of this expansion, there are also possibilities for adjustments to the current classes, always in collaboration with the community. Blizzard is open to hearing players’ opinions to ensure that any improvements are implemented without compromising the experience that fans love so much. With Reign of the Warlock, the saga seems to return with more vitality than ever, and followers are eager to see what new developments may arise in the future.

The director of 'Diablo 2' still hates one element of his game 25 years after its release

I remember Diablo 2 as one of the most important games of my adolescence. Specifically, there was a summer when I can’t remember doing anything else. I remember Diablo 2 as one of the most important games of my adolescence. Specifically, there was a summer when I can’t recall doing anything else. And yet, seen in perspective, it wasn’t perfect… far from it. In a recent interview with Chris Wilson, co-creator of Path of Exile, David Brevik, director of Diablo 2, expressed his reservations about certain aspects of the iconic game, despite its impactful legacy in the video game industry. Brevik, who celebrated the 25th anniversary of Diablo 2 alongside Wilson, expressed his dissatisfaction particularly with the stamina bar, a system that limits the time characters can run before their speed is reduced to a slow walk.

Resistance to resist

The intention behind the resistance bar was to prevent players from constantly fleeing from enemies, but Brevik argued that this mechanism, besides being a “tax for beginners,” becomes irrelevant in the later stages of the game. According to him, players are more interested in fighting and obtaining loot, rather than dodging enemies. “The idea that you could run away all the time and never die seems a bit absurd to me,” Brevik said.

For his part, Wilson defended the resistance bar by defining it as a “mastery mechanic”, suggesting that, although it may be a challenge at first, it eventually allows players to feel satisfaction in overcoming such an obstacle. This debate around the resistance mechanic reflects a trend observed in the development of modern ARPGs, where titles like Diablo 3 have abandoned this approach in favor of a more fluid gameplay.

Despite the criticism from its creator, Diablo 2 left a lasting mark by formalizing systems like progress in skill trees and random loot chests, which remain standard in contemporary RPGs. Brevik has acknowledged that while the stamina bar may have encouraged combat, “a better system could probably have been designed”, a sentiment that resonates with many current game designers.

At its launch, it set a Guinness World Record for being the fastest-selling PC game in history. This legacy remains strong, and the player community is still active in 2025, highlighting not only the original game but also the remaster released in 2021, Diablo 2: Resurrected.

If you want to play Diablo 2, this is the mod you can’t miss

One of the pillars of this longevity is Median XL, the most relevant mod for Diablo 2. This mod has transformed the experience of the original game, introducing support for advanced resolutions of up to 3840×2160, new content, and significant improvements in gameplay, such as adjustments in leveling and combat systems. Interestingly, version 2.0 of Median XL was released just when Blizzard presented its own remaster, which led many players to opt for the mod instead of the official version. Currently, Median XL is in active development, preparing for a new update that will include season 39, with new developers providing ongoing support.

The Median XL community is vibrant and well-organized, with forums and a Discord server where players interact, discuss strategies, and share experiences. Despite being a mod that relies on optional donations for its survival, its popularity demonstrates the unwavering commitment of fans of the original game. Additionally, they have begun to rethink gameplay elements that have not evolved much since its initial release.

Meanwhile, Blizzard continues to work on Diablo 2: Resurrected, which continues to receive updates, and on Diablo 4, which is exploring the concept of games as a service. Undoubtedly, Diablo 2 has maintained its relevance in the video game industry, offering multiple ways to enjoy it, whether through the original experience or the mods created by the community.

The creator of Diablo II is clear: ARPGs are currently worse

David Brevik, co-founder of Blizzard and designer of Diablo, has expressed criticism about the current state of action role-playing games, pointing out that their excessive speed and enemy saturation have stripped the genre of the depth and sense of connection that characterized the early titles of Diablo. In an interview with VideoGamer, Brevik commented that “ARPGs in general have taken to eliminating large amounts of enemies quickly,” which has transformed the gaming experience into something less appealing.

Quality over quantity: an old debate where Brevik knows where he stands

According to Brevik, Diablo 2 offered a more “personal and realistic” experience compared to modern ARPGs, arguing that the game’s pace allowed for greater emotional involvement. “The pace of Diablo 2 is great, and that’s one of the reasons it has endured,” he stated. This approach contrasts with the current trend, where new ARPGs focus on instant rewards and the rapid accumulation of loot and experience, which, according to him, “cheapens the experience.”

The designer also emphasized the loss of enjoyment in the journey that these games offer, suggesting that many players are more focused on reaching an end than on enjoying the process. “The true pleasure of ARPGs is not in reaching the end, but in the journey,” he noted. Brevik criticized games like Path of Exile and Diablo 3 and 4, where players are incentivized to quickly maximize characters to access endgame content, arguing that this limits the full experience of the game.

Brevik’s criticisms add to a growing discussion about the direction of the genre, which seems to be polarizing different generations of players, where preferences for fast-paced gameplay clash with the nostalgia for a more thoughtful and rewarding approach. Although the debate over these generational differences continues, the impact of his perspective is undeniable in the evolution of ARPGs.
