The co-founder of New Blood Interactive, Dave Oshry, has shared his opinion on the financial viability of game distribution platforms, stating that Steam is undoubtedly the most profitable for the company.

In a recent conversation with RPG Site, Oshry emphasized that porting games to consoles is a complicated task that generates “much less” in sales compared to what they achieve through Steam. Despite this, the New Blood team continues to port their games to other platforms, but they do so mainly to satisfy their players.

What compensates the most is the PC and specifically, Steam

Oshry pointed out that the decision to bring their games to Xbox or PlayStation is not solely driven by financial interests, but by the desire to please the gaming community.

“We do it because our players want it, right?” expressed the co-founder. This dedication to fans highlights New Blood’s commitment not only to profitability but also to user experience.

A encouraging aspect for developers has been the reception of development kits for Nintendo’s new console, known as Switch 2. According to Oshry, this new kit is not drastically different from the previous one, which has allowed the studio to get their game Dusk running at 120fps with mouse controls. “Dusk on Switch 2 works great,” he stated, suggesting a good adaptation of the game to the new platform.

On another note, New Blood has decided to venture into the RPG genre with Dungeons of Dusk, an adaptation of their popular title Dusk. The demo is available for free as part of the Steam Next Fest, and the full game is expected to be released this year. Additionally, GOG reaffirms its commitment to game preservation, stating that “the future of preservation is decided by the players who care.”

A game with the DNA of Diablo 2

Speaking of new projects, Moon Beast Productions, made up of former Diablo 2 developers, is working on an RPG titled Darkhaven. This ambitious game will focus on procedurally generated sandbox worlds, promising features such as deformable terrain, mining, and mod support, along with options for solo play or massive multiplayer mode. Currently, Darkhaven’s Kickstarter campaign has raised $200,000 of a $500,000 goal, with 25 days left to reach the target.

Susan Hu, also co-founder of Moon Beast, expressed her mixed feelings about competing with her own past creations and Blizzard’s remastering. However, the developers have made it clear that their intention is not simply to recreate the Diablo experience, but to offer an innovative proposal that combines elements of modern survival games.

These initiatives highlight a vibrant cycle in the gaming industry, where legends of the past intertwine with future projects and player interest continues to grow.

The current situation of the MMO Ashes of Creation, funded through Kickstarter, has generated a climate of concern among its followers. The game, which was launched in early access in December after a successful fundraising campaign of nearly 3.3 million dollars in 2017, faces significant challenges following the resignation of its leadership and massive layoffs.

An administrative disaster

The departure of Intrepid Studios’ director, Steven Sharif, has sparked a wave of concern. Sharif left the company in protest against the takeover by the Board of Directors, which asked him to carry out orders deemed unethical. This event was followed by the resignation of much of the management team, leading the company to notify mass layoffs to the remaining employees. The former communications manager, Margaret Krohn, has expressed on social media her uncertainty about the future of the game and her team.

As the gaming community feels betrayed, many have begun to request refunds, especially those who purchased the game on Steam. Although Steam’s policy generally denies refunds for games played for more than two hours, there are exceptions. Some users have managed to receive refunds despite the restrictions by sharing accounts of their experience and using alternative strategies to communicate with technical support.

Intrepid Studios has announced an upcoming update stream to address player concerns and provide clarity on the future of Ashes of Creation development. However, the sentiment in the community is one of distrust, and the lack of communication has led many to question whether their investment has been worth it.

Yacht Club Games, famous for its indie success Shovel Knight, is at a crossroads with the upcoming release of its next title, Mina the Hollower. This video game, which evokes the classic aesthetic of Game Boy games, has generated excitement since its Kickstarter campaign in 2022 raised over a million euros, a clear sign of public interest. However, its release, initially scheduled for October 31 of this year, has been delayed without a new official date, raising concerns about the current state of development.

The creators of Shovel Knight on the tightrope

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Cris Velasco, founder of Yacht Club Games, revealed that the studio is facing considerable pressure. “If we sell 500,000 copies, that would be amazing. If we sold even 200,000, that would be very, very good. If we sold close to 100,000, not so much,” Velasco commented. These statements underscore the studio’s need to reach a minimum sales threshold to maintain its independence, as failing to achieve those numbers could force them to seek external funding.

Despite having sold over three million copies of Shovel Knight in its 11 years of existence, the studio has not repeated that level of success with its subsequent releases, making the situation of Mina the Hollower critical for its future. Originally, the project for a Shovel Knight sequel was discarded to focus on Mina, indicating significant challenges in planning their projects.

As fans await news about the new release date and the possible impact this will have on Yacht Club Games’ trajectory, the gaming community is attentive, hoping that Mina the Hollower meets expectations and becomes another success in the studio’s journey.

This board game has raised 4 million dollars on Kickstarter and has encountered a problem: it doesn't know what else to offer

The board game Don’t Starve has been a resounding success on Kickstarter, raising nearly $4 million and far exceeding its initial goal of $50,000. This impressive funding comes from the support of a dedicated community, which since its original release in 2013 has turned Don’t Starve into one of the leading survival titles, with a strong cult following backing this tabletop adaptation.

Suffering Because of Their Success

Developed by Glass Cannon Unplugged, this cooperative game is designed for 1 to 4 players and offers an experience in a world where magic and science intertwine in unexpected ways. The game’s release date has been set for March 2027, generating great anticipation among fans.

In a recent update, the Glass Cannon team announced new funding goals that are available for sponsors. These include wormhole tokens, starting cards, and regeneration marker miniatures, which will add more variety and strategy to the game. The wormhole tokens, in particular, will allow players to move quickly across the map, while the miniatures will enhance the visual experience.

With only three days left in the Kickstarter campaign, an acrylic standee of Wurt and a digital skin have been unlocked if the total reaches $4.1 million before its close. Given the current funding levels, it is very likely that these additional goals will be met, further encouraging sponsor participation.

This effort to adapt Don’t Starve to the world of board games seems to be well received and promises to offer players a new way to explore its survival themes in a cooperative environment.

The game Ahoy, developed by Capstan Games, has captured the attention of video game enthusiasts following its successful launch on Kickstarter a month ago. With over 5,000 backers and more than $750,000 raised in just 21 hours, this ambitious indie project aims to redefine the experience of pirate video games through a focus on the historical accuracy of the Age of Sail.

It’s not your typical boat game

Ahoy combines crew management, navigation in a vast open world, large-scale naval battles, and team PvP experiences. The developers were inspired by classics like Sid Meier’s Pirates! and the rich history of 18th-century pirate life, aiming to provide a more authentic and less Hollywood-like experience compared to titles like Sea of Thieves.

The launch plan is divided into three phases: Sea Trials, which is expected in the first quarter of 2026 as a multiplayer environment focused on teaching navigation; Ahoy: Arena, which will feature ranked servers and seasonal events, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026; and, as a long-term vision, a persistent open world, which does not yet have a specific release date.

Developed after three years of pre-production, the Capstan Games team expresses confidence in their vision for Ahoy for 2025. During the recent edition of the Future Games Show by GamesRadar, the game was presented to a wide audience, marking an important milestone in its promotion within the competitive indie games market.

The future of Ahoy looks promising, but for now fans must wait until 2026 to experience the true pirate life. With a solid support base and a clear vision, many are wondering if Ahoy could be the successor that the community has been waiting for since the last golden age of pirate games.

The video game industry is going through a complicated financial moment, making it difficult to access funding for new projects. However, the indie developer Electric Saint is proving that the passion of the community can make a difference. Their game, Crescent County, an open-world RPG featuring a young witch delivery person who moves on a motorized broom, has managed to fund itself 100% in less than 24 hours through Kickstarter, raising $60,000 from an initial goal of $53,546.

A game that has managed to appeal to its community

Despite being rejected by more than 50 publishers in their attempt to secure funding, the Electric Saint team decided to turn to crowdfunding. The response has been overwhelming, with the community expressing strong interest in the project, which as of the closing of this news has raised over $72,000 in its campaign, with 21 days remaining.

Electric Saint has shared that financing new IPs is becoming an increasingly difficult task. “We have presented Crescent County to numerous distributors and have faced constant rejections. The struggle for financial support is real for new teams in the industry,” the studio indicates on their Kickstarter page.

Crescent County invites players to enjoy a colorful adventure in a world where they can deliver packages during the day and participate in nighttime street races on motorized brooms. The title, which stands out for its captivating artistic style, is being developed for PC and Xbox Series, and already has a demo available on Steam. Although Electric Saint has not yet revealed a release date, the support received on Kickstarter suggests that the community trusts its proposal. In a time when the industry struggles to find new projects, Crescent County stands as a ray of hope for independent developers.

In this context, Hawthorn has captured the attention of fans, raising 100,000 euros in just 24 hours, out of a total of 178,235 euros needed to access the pre-order phase. This rapid support indicates a remarkable interest from the community.

Hawthorn is a life simulator that stands out for having animals as protagonists in a charming rural setting. The plot, which includes an imminent threat that will disturb the peace of the idyllic landscape, has sparked comparisons with other popular titles like Stardew Valley. Players will have to face a series of challenges and tasks, as well as take advantage of seasonal changes in their adventure. Character customization and skill development will be key components of the gaming experience.

Behind Hawthorn is a team with experience in acclaimed titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3, which adds a factor of trust for potential sponsors. Although some team members may not have been directly involved in the design or programming, their connection to these great games raises expectations for the project.

The campaign on Kickstarter not only seeks funding but also invites the community to be part of the development, allowing their opinions and suggestions to influence the progress of the game. This dynamic of collaboration between creators and players is an element that has gained relevance in the industry, elevating Hawthorn’s potential to a new level, if it develops as promised.

The video game industry faces a complicated landscape, dominated by large publishers with million-dollar budgets, despite the crisis affecting the sector. This economic framework has led many studios to seek new forms of financing, with crowdfunding being one of the most effective tools to maintain their creative independence. The Ukrainian studio Frogwares, known for its work on the Sherlock Holmes franchise, has pointed out that crowdfunding has become essential in these uncertain times.

A Kickstarter where we will have all the details

In particular, Frogwares has announced the launch of its crowdfunding campaign for the highly anticipated sequel, The Sinking City 2, which will begin on March 6 through Kickstarter. Although details about the project are still limited, the existence of two exclusive editions for backers has been confirmed: a limited edition and a collector’s edition. This initiative is expected to be a major event, with promises of incredible rewards, special events, and surprises for sponsors.

The Sinking City 2 will take players to a fascinating open world set in 1920s America, immersing them in the Lovecraftian horror that characterizes the work of H.P. Lovecraft. One of the standout features of this game is the inclusion of a deduction option, allowing players to choose between diving into a more fear and survival-focused experience or engaging in the traditional investigative elements of the franchise.

With the scheduled release for 2025 on platforms like PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, more details about the gameplay and other aspects of the game are expected to be revealed in the coming days. Fans of the horror genre and followers of Frogwares are eager for what promises to be a standout title in the near future.
