At Nintendo, they believe that Mario can remain popular for 100 years and they know how to achieve it

Super Mario has reached a significant milestone by turning 40 years old since its launch in 1981. Throughout these four decades, this iconic character has dominated multiple franchises, from racing in Mario Kart to intergalactic adventures with Super Mario Galaxy, and even made the leap to film with the recent release of Super Mario Bros.: The Movie. Despite his long history, Nintendo assures that its protagonist will not only remain relevant in the market but aims for Mario to celebrate his centenary in 2085.

Un personaje cuyo propósito es la diversión

In a recent book from the Nintendo Museum, key figures from the company, such as Takashi Tezuka, an executive at Nintendo, emphasize the importance of the constant evolution of the franchise. “One might think it would be a miracle if Mario is still here after 100 years,” notes Tezuka, who adds that the key lies in maintaining fun: “If it’s not fun, you’ll get bored.” This approach highlights Nintendo’s commitment to innovate and adapt to new forms of entertainment without losing the essence of the game, which has always been running and jumping.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the character, also supports this perspective. Commenting on the future of the franchise, he indicates that Super Mario will continue to incorporate digital technologies and expand into new fields, including movies, while always maintaining the interactive aspect. “I believe Mario will be with us for a long time,” Miyamoto assures, reaffirming that the essence of the character will be key to the enjoyment of new generations of players.

It is clear that the Switch 2 has enjoyed a strong initial boost thanks to Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. And now both titles have received recent updates that enhance the gaming experience and address issues raised by players.

Things to Polish

The version 1.3.0 of Mario Kart World includes several significant improvements in Free Roam mode. Now, players can enjoy this mode with a second player, allowing for friendly races even in full games. Additionally, the update makes it easier to collect items, as players will now receive notifications about which items they have already found on the map, thus optimizing the exploratory experience.

Likewise, frustrating bugs that affected the ranking system and caused crashes in Bowser’s castle when using the Bullet Bill have been fixed. These corrections, while not drastic changes, significantly improve the quality of life of the game, ensuring a smoother experience for users.

On the other hand, Donkey Kong Bananza has also received its version 2.0.1, although with more limited fixes. This update resolves an alignment issue with the character Pauline’s voices depending on the system language. Players will also see a fix for a bug that prevented them from claiming a disc as a reward for finding all the balloons in the Bananza Rehearsal mode.

Recently, a video from Mario Kart World has shown NPCs carrying out car thefts, adding a touch of humor to the gameplay. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong Bananza released a new DLC titled Emerald Rush, which allows players to enjoy the roguelite mode and keep playing indefinitely, adding even more value to the gaming experience.

Sega is not afraid of Nintendo and to prove it has launched Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds

SEGA has decided to revive its historic competition with Nintendo with the launch of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, just after celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. In a strategic move, the company has reimagined its famous 90s commercial about Blast Processing to compare its new racing game with Mario Kart, a classic that has dominated the genre since its inception.

Can you really win at Mario Kart?

The new announcement highlights features of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds that are not found in Mario Kart, such as the lack of cross-play, an aspect derived from the exclusivity of the Nintendo Switch 2. This return to rivalry not only evokes nostalgia in fans of SEGA’s golden age but also shows that the company is ready to compete seriously in the current market.

SEGA has not lost sight of its alliance with Nintendo, continuing its support for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 and planning to release joint content in the future. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available on both the current Nintendo Switch and its successor, highlighting a relationship that, despite the competition, remains strong. However, with Nintendo characters like Kirby also looking to play on the same circuit as Mario, the pressure is on Sonic to prove his speed and trajectories in this new gaming landscape.

In this context, SEGA uses nostalgic elements to attract players, creating a sense of excitement around Sonic and his legacy. With this move, the company not only recalls its rich history but also seeks to strategically position itself in a market that continues to be influenced by the reference of Nintendo, while updating its own proposal of speed and fun.

Everything we know about the new racing game from Nintendo that aims to dethrone Mario Kart World

Although Mario Kart is currently Nintendo’s iconic racing game, it is not the only one. It hasn’t even always been the most popular and relevant. There was a time when the company’s premium racing game was F-Zero and, the one that received favored treatment, was this one. But those are no longer our times and unfortunately, we have to settle for things like F-Zero 99. Fortunately, creators like Masahiro Sakurai can do what they want within Nintendo, including a kart game that is not Mario Kart, and thus Kirby Air Ride was born.

Kirby Air Ride is a racing game released in 2003 for the Nintendo Game Cube. Although it was a critical failure and never achieved the sales of other titles from the company, perhaps because it was released almost at the same time as two of the most notable driving games in Nintendo’s history —F-Zero GX and Mario Kart: Double Dash, for many, the two best games in their respective franchises—, it managed to sell over a million copies worldwide. Creating a cult following for the game.

This has allowed for the announcement of a sequel: Kirby Air Riders, in anticipation of Nintendo Switch 2. To tell us everything, they have made a 45-minute Direct to clarify all the relevant details about the game. And we have come to explain it to you in detail.

What’s new

One of the peculiarities of the original game is that it had a single pilot: Kirby. Although it had different colors, what made the difference were the different ships, which defined different ways to play. Sometimes, in an absolutely radical way. These were not just differences in maneuverability or acceleration, but some could be controlled in completely different ways. But in this sequel, they have decided to add a new feature: pilots.

Now, in addition to Kirby, we can choose other iconic characters from the franchise such as King DeDeDe, Bandana Waddle Dee, or Meta Knight, among many others. Each with their own specials that will give them unique characteristics when playing.

Because another addition to the game is that it is now controlled not only with the joystick and one button, but with the joystick and two buttons. We need a second button to activate the special button, which is associated with the character we have chosen. It can involve charging with great acceleration, making particularly intense attacks, or throwing super spicy curry plates to incapacitate the other racers around.

What’s old about it

As in the original game, we will not have a button to accelerate or need to press forward to advance. Our pilot will move forward without us having to tell them to do so. The available button that is not for executing our special is the brake, which will allow us to drift and charge our ship’s acceleration, forcing us to know when to use it not only to avoid losing speed but also to gain acceleration at critical moments. As any veteran player of Kirby Air Ride will know.

In addition, it has been confirmed that the Air Ride modes and urban trials will return. The former are races of up to six people in lavish settings where mastering the characteristics of our pilots and ships will be essential. The latter are a kind of arenas for up to 16 people where we will have to face other pilots while collecting bonuses for our pilot to reach a final arena, where the winner will be the one who achieves the best result in the final trial.

When is it released and what is its price

With a release date set for November 20 and a price of 70 euros, both in physical and digital formats, it is significantly cheaper than Super Mario Kart World. Although with 25 gigabytes confirmed, it is also quite a bit heavier than that one.

What is all that extra space used for? We don’t know, because as Sakurai explained in the presentation, many things have been left unsaid. Extra modes present in the original game have not been shown, the character selection UI seems suspiciously empty, and there is still more than enough time to share even more details about the game. But what is clear is that anyone looking for a kart game that is less of a party game and more of a technical racing game that favors learning and technique above all else, Kirby Air Riders is the title you shouldn’t miss this year.

In an ambitious challenge that tests perseverance and skill, Storster, a dedicated player, has set the goal of completing all 1,242 games released for the Nintendo Wii in North America, along with 400 digital titles from the Virtual Console. This mission is not only monumental due to the sheer number of games but also because of the diversity of genres and qualities that span over seven years of the console’s history.

Get through the Wii as quickly as possible

The journey of Storster is being documented on his YouTube channel, where to date he has published 21 videos, starting his feat with the acclaimed Mario Kart Wii, which he considers “the best Mario Kart.” From there, his journey includes a variety of titles, from classics like Silent Hill: Shattered Memories to lesser-known gems like Rubik’s World and DeFenDin’ De Penguin. His effort stands out not only for its ambition but also for the tribute it pays to the rich and varied library of the Wii, beyond the big names known to all.

The speedrunning community is known for its exceptional dedication and superhuman skills to overcome challenges that sometimes seem impossible. However, Storster’s mission diverges from record times, focusing on the completion of each game, demonstrating that patience and love for video games are just as important as speed. As he progresses in this monumental achievement, his story resonates in a community that values perseverance over competition.

As his odyssey through the Wii catalog continues, Storster is not only writing his own story within the world of speedrunning, but also creating a testament for an entire generation of players, a legacy that transcends time and the limits of the initial challenge.

A user known as egodoubt2 has transformed the classic strategy game from Blizzard, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, into a dynamic racing experience, similar to Mario Kart. This innovative mod adds 3D physics and supports up to 20 players in multiplayer matches, offering the community a new way to enjoy the original title, released in 2002.

A fantastic madness that we didn’t think was possible

Customization is a key aspect of this creation, as the developed map is open source, allowing other users to modify it. Players can adjust elements of the circuit and choose different available objects to improve themselves in the race. Although the egodoubt2 mod stands out for its advanced physics features, there are a number of other mods, such as Leeroy Kart, which, while offering similar experiences, do not have the same physical depth.

The mod demo shows up to 20 racers competing on a simplified circuit, using iconic vehicles from the Warcraft universe. The user has demonstrated how the original perspective changes from an isometric view to a third-person view, allowing for a more immersive and fun experience. Although the race presented is still in development, elements such as speed boosters and interactive objects that enrich the gameplay are already visible.

This phenomenon highlights the community’s constant interest in creating alternative experiences within titles that were originally of different genres. The versatility of the mod suggests that it could even be adapted to emulate other game genres, such as RPGs. The creativity of players seems to know no bounds, reflecting an interesting evolution in the way video games are perceived and played.

Nintendo has released the first post-launch update for its popular game, Mario Kart World, fixing several bugs that affected the player experience. Although no drastic changes were implemented, the update includes a series of fixes that improve overall gameplay.

Changes that not only include that you now eat more shells

Among the most significant corrections is the solution to a problem in DK Spaceport, where players would sometimes slide through a wall before the finish line. A bug that caused players to be unable to return to their correct position after falling between Airship Fortress and Bowser’s Castle while gliding has also been fixed. To top it off, issues that prevented the use of items during races were also resolved, which can further increase the chaos and fun in competitions.

The update also addresses recurring issues such as game crashes that occurred after competing online or after watching post-race replays. Communication errors that could arise when joining friends in career modes have been fixed, which will undoubtedly make the online experience smoother. A bug that made controls inoperable when selecting a character on the Free Roam map has also been rectified, as well as inconsistencies in score fluctuations in Knockout Tour and Online Play modes.

The voice actor of Mario expressed his excitement about the experience of playing Mario Kart World, commenting that “it’s truly amazing to hear myself” in the game. With these corrections, players can expect a more polished and thrilling experience on the tracks, further reinforcing the popularity of this installment of the iconic racing franchise.

The Nintendo Switch 2 has had a stunning start in the market, selling over 3.5 million units in its first four days since launch, making it Nintendo’s best-selling console in this period. This impressive performance surpasses the 2.4 million units that the original Switch reached during its first month and shows a clear sign that the demand for the new hardware is exceptionally high.

An absolutely massive reception

Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, expressed his gratitude for the positive response from the public, emphasizing that “fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2.” This console was launched with standout titles like Mario Kart: World, and significant improvements are presented in popular games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which has undoubtedly contributed to its success.

To date, the Switch 2 has reached sales records in several markets. In the United Kingdom, it has become the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history; while in France, sales reached 207,000 units, surpassing the previous PS5 record. In Spain, the figures are also impressive, with over 108,000 units sold, doubling the previous record in this country.

Nintendo had projected sales of 15 million units for the fiscal year ending in March, and with such a strong start in sales, it seems likely to surpass that figure. Comparing this launch with that of other consoles, PS5 distributed 3.4 million units in its first month, a figure that the Switch 2 has already surpassed in its first days. The expectations surrounding this new console are high, and the consulting firm Kantan Games expects it to continue breaking records in the coming weeks.

The cow, a character that previously only served a decorative role in the popular Mario Kart universe, has gained a prominent place as a playable character in the upcoming title ‘Mario Kart World’ for Nintendo Switch 2. This change, which promises to revolutionize gameplay, is due to the vision of producer Kosuke Yabuki, who argues that, by breaking with traditional conventions, characters without limbs, such as Goomba and Pokey, can also be playable.

Many will want to play with this character

For years, players could only see the cows in the background, as an obstacle in the Moo Moo Meadows stage. However, the idea that this adorable character could drive a kart went from being a fan dream to a reality in ‘Mario Kart World’, a title that will be available from the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. In a brainstorming session among the developers, the cow was envisioned driving a tiny truck, which led to the realization that other background characters could also be included as competitors.

The inclusion of the cow has sparked an overwhelmingly positive response among fans, who have flooded social media with fan art and tributes. Yabuki expressed his surprise at the level of enthusiasm generated by the announcement, highlighting that it has exceeded their expectations regarding the warm reception from the public. We hope everyone continues to choose classic characters like Peach and Mario, he stated, although he also anticipates that many will opt for new characters like the cow and the penguin.

With ‘Mario Kart World’, a range of possibilities opens up for the franchise, and the developers are excited about the new directions the game can take. Although the idea of characters without hands or feet at the wheel may seem absurd, the premise of surprising and entertaining players remains. It is speculated that this new design philosophy will transform the way players experience Nintendo’s already iconic racing title.

9 outrageous plagiarisms of Mario Kart that throw a blue shell at the Nintendo saga

We are about to finally be able to play Mario Kart World, the game that replaces Mario Kart 8 in its functions after more than a decade (between WiiU and Switch) being the flagship of the franchise. However, since the first title on Super Nintendo, all franchises have wanted to have their own “kart”. It doesn’t matter how cheap, derivative, or -directly- plagiarized it is: if we can put characters in little cars and have them collect powers to throw at their opponents, it has to be programmed no matter what. We are about to finally play Mario Kart World, the game that replaces Mario Kart 8 after more than a decade (between WiiU and Switch) as the flagship of the franchise. However, since the first title on Super Nintendo, all franchises have wanted to have their own “kart.” It doesn’t matter how cheap, derivative, or -directly- plagiarized it is: if we can put characters in little cars and have them collect powers to throw at their opponents, it has to be programmed no matter what. Do you want to open the box of thunder and see the 9 most outrageous plagiarisms in the history of Mario Kart? Start your engines, because this journey is one-way only.

Chavo Kart

Nothing says “desperation” quite like a kart game based on the animated version of a Mexican sitcom from the 70s. Of course, in no episode did La Chilindrina and Don Ramón appear riding in small cars throwing objects, but in 2014 it seemed like such a good idea that it was released for Xbox 360 and PS3. The good part? You could race through the series’ settings. The bad part? Well… Do I remind you that it’s a kart game based on El Chavo Del 8?

Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing

Of course, if there are games pulled out of nowhere, we have to talk about Star Wars. In this case, we could run with the characters from The Phantom Menace (in addition to Boba Fett and Darth Vader), all of them with big heads in a “super-deformed” style. It was such a disaster that it was only released for PS2 and, after seeing its sales, the rest of the ports were canceled. You only need to watch for a little while to see that it should be condemned to the deepest oblivion: the Force was not with it.

Crazy Frog Arcade Racer

Do you remember Crazy Frog? It was a kind of frog with a pilot’s helmet that sang a version of Axel F and, for some reason, it was everything at the end of the 90s. And, of course, it ended up starring in its own Mario Kart plagiarism, where it faced off against other characters from its world that absolutely no one remembers, like Rasta Dog, Punk Girl, or Dream Boy. This authentic disaster was released for Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2… and it even had a sequel in 2006, which apparently broke the curse and made Crazy Frog leave our lives.

South Park Rally

At some point, we will have to talk about how the quality of South Park games (before, of course, The Stick of Truth) was terrifying. South Park Rally, in particular, is one of the worst, and it deserves credit: based only on the first three seasons, Tantalus Interactive took just 7 months to finish programming and release it for sale, which gives you an idea of its quality. At least Trey Parker and Matt Stone provided the voices themselves… Even though they spent the next decade laughing at it!

Burger King PocketBike Racer

In defense of this game, at least it must be said that it does not hide that it is an advertisement: it cost just $3.99 more alongside any menu at Burger King, and the quality matches the price. Although it was originally made in seven months for Xbox Live Arcade, in the end, the result was so good (for what everyone expected) that they ended up bringing it to physical format. That said, don’t be fooled: beyond being able to choose a giant hamburger as a character, it doesn’t have much more to offer.

Garfield Kart: Furious Racing

The worst part is not that it’s a Garfield kart game. It’s that it’s the second Garfield kart game! And if you thought that would make it better by patching the errors, think again: it’s exactly what you think. I mean, it takes the mechanics of Mario Kart but doesn’t know what to do with them, leading to absolute frustration. Want to know the worst part? In May of this year, it was announced that there would be a third installment of Garfield Kart, titled Garfield Kart 2. Not even they can agree.

Woody Woodpecker Racing

What is the reason that Woody Woodpecker, a character already forgotten by pop culture, starts racing against other even lesser-known cartoon characters from Universal? Well, of course, it’s to try to strike gold and make some money along the way. Clearly, the result did not bring Woody Woodpecker back to fame for a moment. If anything, it sank him further into the mire of characters that will not return to the forefront no matter how hard they try.

Smurf Racer

When Peyó created the Smurfs in 1958, in the pages of Johan and Pirluit, no one imagined what capitalism would do with his tender characters. For example, turning them into race car drivers. Ten tracks, 13 racers, a disaster in the making only for the true fans of smurfing all the racing games.
