What comes after 'Super Mario Galaxy'? Five possible projects about the future of Nintendo in film

Three years had passed since the last time we saw Mario, Luigi, and Peach in theaters, but the audience hasn’t lost any interest: Super Mario Galaxy has been a box office hit that will surely surpass 1 billion dollars in revenue, and with the Zelda movie becoming one of the most important of 2027, the question is obvious: Where should Nintendo go now? What is its roadmap? What clues does Super Mario Galaxy leave us about the future? Don’t worry, because we analyze them one by […]

It had been three years since we last saw Mario, Luigi, and Peach on the big screen, but the audience hasn’t lost any interest: Super Mario Galaxy has been a box office hit that will surely surpass 1 billion dollars in revenue, and with the Zelda movie becoming one of the most important of 2027, the question is obvious: Where should Nintendo go now? What is its roadmap? What clues does Super Mario Galaxy leave us about the future? Don’t worry, because we analyze them one by one… Or will the Big N have the ability to surprise us once again? When is the Wario Ware adaptation coming, please?

Donkey Kong Country

It’s the most obvious one, right? Even in Super Mario Galaxy, where he doesn’t appear, the characters declare themselves die-hard fans of his adventures, and it’s no wonder: he has charisma, an incredible supporting cast, and it would allow for something completely different from the Mushroom Kingdom: adventures among vines, jungles, barrels, and special powers. Ah! And it would also allow for the DK Rap at the end, you know!

StarFox

No one can deny that their forced appearance in Super Mario Galaxy has to lead to something more… And, of course, it’s not going to be that their latest games sell, because they haven’t released one in ages. They have changed their personality to make it more accessible, they have given their voice to Glen Powell… And it would really be strange if they just left it there and Fox McCloud never appeared again in a Nintendo production doing a proper barrel roll.

Super Mario Odyssey

What remains after exploring the Mushroom Kingdom and wandering through the galaxy? Well, diving into an odyssey as it should be. Although there have been hints here and there (the dinosaur, the Mexican planet with maracas included), we still have to see the definitive odyssey of Mario, with Cappy on his head and the possibility, of course, of including another guest star. Is Nintendo really going to hold back the urge to make a modern version of New Donk City?

Kirby

It hasn’t been released yet, but after Mario and Zelda, the third member of Nintendo’s royalty (and one of the ones most likely to sell a ton of merchandise) is the quintessential pink ball, Kirby. Additionally, it’s worth noting that from 2001 to 2003, it already had a series of 100 episodes, so it’s certainly not for lack of stories to tell. The only “bad” thing (in many quotes) is that its target audience may be even smaller than that of those who enjoy the Mario movies, but it would be strange if they didn’t even try.

Super Smash Bros

Let’s not deny it: we all have in mind that, just like Disney did with the Avengers, this has to end in a colossal crossover… Because it’s not that difficult! On Wii, they already introduced the fantastic mode of The Intergalactic Emissary, where little by little we unlocked all the characters. What’s stopping them from making, in a few years, a Super Smash Bros that lives up to the ones they have been presenting and a few new ones? After all, if we’re going to make a jingling of keys, at least let it be grand: Would they dare to include Sonic? Would the audience go wild with a Falcon Punch? If Zelda is a resounding success, I’m afraid it will become an absolute priority in Nintendo’s offices. Two billion dollars guaranteed.
