Complete Guide to the Eternals

There’s a new group of heroes in town! Get to know the Eternals!

eternals

If your Marvel knowledge is only confined to their most popular characters, then you’ve probably never heard about the Eternals. However, if you’re a fan of the movies, you are probably dying to learn more about them, especially after this years’ San Diego Comic-Con.

This heroic race has been around for more than 40 years, and have gone through loads of changes over time. We decided to gather up all the general information from the comic books about the Eternals that we will be seeing in the Eternals movie. So, if you need to brush up on your Eternals knowledge, we’ve got the guide for you!

Complete guide to the Eternals

Who are the Eternals?

The Eternals were created by the famous Jack Kirby in the 1970s.

Basically, they are ACTUALLY Earth’s mightiest heroes. The Eternals are immortal cosmic beings (basically, they’re aliens) that have godlike powers and abilities. They also fight with their immense cosmic energy that gives them superhuman powers.

Millions of years ago, Celestials (that’s the same species as Star-Lord’s dad) looked at early humanity and created two additional races. They created a disgusting, monstrous race called the Deviants. They also created the advanced Eternals.

We do not know much about the plot for the movie, but we do know several members of the film’s cast. This includes Salma Hayek who plays the leader of the Eternals, Ajak, and Angelina Jolie who will star as Thena.

The members

There are different Eternals depending on where you are in the galaxy. As of now, there are Eternals on Earth, Titan, alternate dimensions, from unknown alien worlds, and Uranos. For this list, we are looking at the Eternals that will appear in the movie, and ones you might have heard about.

Thena

ThenaThe first up for the Eternals is Thena, who will be played by Angelina Jolie.

All of the Eternals are insanely strong, and Thena is no slouch herself. She has superhuman speed and strength along with a bunch of other abilities including:

  • Regeneration
  • Durability
  • Shapeshifting
  • Shooting energy blasts
  • Mind control
  • Telekinesis
  • Telepathy
  • Flight
  • Creating barriers/shields

Aside from her powers, you can typically expect Thena to bring her trusty spear that also shoots energy blasts as well as a bow with elemental arrows.

She is honestly a lot like Wonder Woman. Both she and Wonder Woman were raised in a heavily Greek-influenced world believing in the Greek gods like Zeus, Ares, and Athena (where Thena gets her name).

Also like Wonder Woman, Thena has a soft spot for humans. Along with a desire to protect humanity, Thena fell in love with a human male and had a son with him.

Thena is also super smart. While trying to pursue a somewhat normal life, she became one of the top researchers at Stark Enterprises where she worked for Iron Man. However, Thena is not afraid to get her hands dirty, and will gladly introduce you to the business end of her spear.

Ikaris

IkarisRobb Stark left the world of Westeros and has come to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Played by Richard Madden, Ikaris is one of the most powerful members of the Eternals. His powers include:

  • Strength
  • Speed
  • Flight
  • Durability
  • Regeneration
  • Enhanced reflexes
  • Telekinesis
  • Laser vision
  • Psionic abilities
  • Teleportation

Typically, Ikaris is seen as the main focus of the Eternals, but it appears as though he will be taking a backseat while Angelina Jolie takes the spotlight as Thena. A lot of the time, he leads the Eternals, and also played a major role in introducing them to the world.

Kingo

Kingo

Kingo is…. honestly an extremely random member of the Eternals to add to the movie.

He’s been in next to no issues and hasn’t had nearly the same development as other Eternals. Also, he is a Japanese and was raised in the way of the samurai. So it is a bit random that he is being played by Kumail Nanjiani.

He did have a very random character arc where his mind was wiped and he became an extremely popular action movie star.

Although we’ve never seen him use his full Eternal powers in the comics, we can assume he has the same superhuman abilities. He is also an expert swordsman.

We’re expecting the writers are going to give Kingo a massive overhaul. Given the fact that he’s going to be played by Nanjiani, we expect him to fulfill the role of comic relief.

Ajak

Ajak

If you thought Kingo was getting an overhaul, wait until you get a load of Ajak.

Like most other Eternals, Ajak has super strength, speed, durability, healing, the ability to shoot energy blasts, fly, and teleport. He also has the unique ability to communicate with nearby Celestials telepathically.

In the comics, you could say he is fairly standard. He’s not the most powerful or important person in the Eternals, but he isn’t the least powerful or important either.

He was born and raised in the frozen tundra of Siberia.

So, who did Marvel Studios get to play this hardened, Russian, gritty man?

Why, the Mexican-American bombshell Salma Hayek, of course.

VIDEO IS NSFW

Not only that, but Ajak has now been upgraded to the leader of the Eternals according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a female actress taking the role of a normally male character; Marvel is just clearly going in a different direction than the comics with this flick.

Phastos

Phastos

Not a lot is known about Phastos as his history is a bit cloudy. However, he has the same basic abilities as pretty much every Eternal. He also carries around a hammer similar to Thor’s. However, his hammer fires energy blasts rather than lightning.

He is a brilliant inventor and engineer. He’s basically the Donatello of the Eternals. He is being played by Brian Tyree Henry who voiced Jefferson Davis in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

Sprite

Sprite

Representing one of the youngest Eternals, Sprite is a childlike Eternal who is often too immature for their own good.

Despite being an Eternal, you typically don’t see Sprite using most of the typical Eternal powers like strength, speed, flight, or shooting energy blasts. Instead, Sprite is a master of using psychic powers to erase memories, as well as creating illusions to fool enemies.

Makkari

Makarri

Much like his buddy Phastos, Makkari dabbles in tech, inventing, and machinery with the Eternals. More specifically, he builds high-speed vehicles that the team uses on missions.

Why a race of superhumans with superspeed and flight need vehicles is anybody’s guess, but maybe Makkari just needed something to do. He doesn’t have any abilities that stick out when compared to other members of the Eternals.

He is actually one of the smarter members of the Eternals. He was taught philosophy by Plato while living in Greece and is considered to be a prophet amongst the Eternals.

Thanos

Thanos

That’s right!

Thanos himself was a member of the Eternals in the comics. More specifically, he is an Eternal from Titan. this would explain why he’s so strong that he can even take on the likes of Thor and the Hulk:

It will be interesting to see if the MCU will dive into that plot point once the film comes out in November of 2020.

Who’s Gilgamesh?

Gilgamesh

Although not a member of the Eternal’s team himself, Gilgamesh is no pushover.

Serving as the villain for the movie and in the comics, Gilgamesh is also known as “The Forgotten One.” He is absurdly strong, and his powers have been known to even rival Thanos. He is an Eternal by race but has only joined forces with the team on rare occasions.

He has all the same powers of most Eternals but is also insanely skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Since he is an Eternal, he is basically immortal. During his life, he devoted himself to learning as many fighting styles as he could. He is considered to be a monster slayer who kills giant, mythical creatures for sport.

Although he is traditionally a villain, he has joined forces with the Eternals, and even the Avengers.

Wrapping up

Although the Black Widow movie is coming first in 2020, we might be looking forward to this movie even more.

As far as what we’re going to see in the movie, we have no idea. We know the cast, and we know that Gilgamesh will be the villain. As far as where the Eternals have been all this time, your guess is as good as ours. However, we expect that Marvel Studios is going to take a LOT of creative liberties with this movie.

With “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Marvel had the opportunity to take one of their less popular properties, make some changes, and ended making one of their biggest hits. We’re guessing that director Chloé Zhao is hoping to accomplish the same with “Eternals.”

Regardless, we are excited to see where Phase 4 is heading, and we can’t wait to see this one!

Every MCU movie ranked from worst to best

From Iron Man to Endgame, what are the best films the MCU has to offer?

SPOILERS BELOW!

Surpassing even the Star Wars franchise, the MCU is the most profitable film franchise of all time.

Averaging about $1 billion per film, the MCU has created heroic characters and tyrannical villains mixed with some of the best action and comedy of our time.

However, not every film was a winner. Movies like the first Thor film pale in comparison to later entries like “Captain America: Civil War” where we got to see more action and a larger assortment of characters.

Every MCU movie ranked from worst to best

23. “Iron Man 3”

Iron Man 3

A common theme you will see with this list is that as Captain America got better and better, Iron Man got worse and worse. Robert Downey Jr. is the film’s only saving grace, bringing the same charm and wit to Tony Stark‘s character.

Where the film falls flat is in every other aspect. The action is bland. The story is dumb. The villain is absolutely atrocious:

In the comics, the Mandarin is an all-powerful scientist who uses alien technology to become a supreme overlord. He is the true arch-nemesis of Iron Man. In the movie, he is an actor who fakes being head of a terrorist organization.

Where the film goes from bad to insulting is in its treatment of Ben Kingsley. Kingsley has wanted to play a comic book villain for years. He nearly played Vulture in “Spider-Man 3,” but the director had other plans. The Mandarin seemed like a dream role for the actor, but what resulted was the film of our nightmares.

Hopefully, we will see the Mandarin done right in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

22. “The Incredible Hulk”

Incredible Hulk

This one was so bad that even Marvel wants you to forget about it.

Hulk is an unstoppable force of destruction who annihilates everything in sight with his bare fists. Somehow, the filmmakers found a way to make that boring. We don’t get to see a lot of Hulk action, and when we do it’s a CG mishmash that looks worse than some video games.

Looking back on the film, Edward Norton didn’t do a terrible job, but his portrayal would not have fit as well in the Avengers like Mark Ruffalo’s.

21. “Thor: The Dark World”

Thor 2

In the Avengers films, Thor is one of the most entertaining characters to see on the screen. Unfortunately, it took him a few movies before the God of Thunder himself captured the same energy.

In his second feature-length film, Thor finds himself up against the dark elf Malekith. Malekith is played by the Ninth Doctor himself, Christopher Eccleston. Eccleston is a good actor, but Malekith is not an interesting villain. He wants to use the Reality Stone to take over the universe. That sounds interesting, but it just comes off as bland.

Yeesh, talking about the Infinity Stones gets super confusing. Luckily, we have a guide to help you learn more about them:

What truly hurts this film is the humor. The MCU is a bit controversial for how much humor there is, but good lord, is there too much in this movie, and Kat Dennings‘s character is at the forefront.

The film has “The Dark World,” in its title, and yet with the sheer amount of humor, you’d think its the most lighthearted film in the series. The jokes do not land. By the end, you’ll want Thor to bash your head in with Mjolnir.

20. “Captain Marvel”

Captain Marvel

The MCU has immortalized several actors and actresses as their characters. Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man. Chris Evans IS Captain America. Scarlett Johannsen IS Black Widow. Brie Larson, on the other hand, isn’t exactly a memorable Captain Marvel.

She is by no means bad, and the issues with her character are just as much the fault of the writing and directing. She’s just boring. The story’s focus is on her trying to figure out her past. The problem is that the movie is a prequel, so we already have a lot of her backstory figured out. The things that surprise her and other characters have no effect on audience members who have seen the rest of the MCU.

When the film is at its best, it still doesn’t come close to other films on this list. The movie builds her up to be this trump card against Thanos, but all it does is make her feel like a plot device rather than a person. When she does unlock her powers and go full badass, the film becomes what it should have been the entire time.

The film also tries to capture some nostalgia, but completely falls flat. Taking place in the ’90s as a prequel to the rest of the MCU, the advertising looked like this was going to take us down memory lane. Instead, we got to see a shot of a Blockbuster video and a nostalgic Stan Lee cameo. Other than that, the nostalgia trip fell short just like the rest of the film.

19. “Thor”

Thor

Coming off two Iron Man films and one Hulk film, we were looking forward to a breath of fresh air as far as scenery goes. Cities are cool and all, but when we heard a Thor movie was coming, we were looking forward to seeing a movie take place in Asgard. To the film’s credit, Asgard looks cool and all, but we just don’t get to see a lot of it as the film mainly takes place in New Mexico.

New Mexico is fine and dandy for “Breaking Bad,” but for a superhero movie about the mythical God of Thunder, it leaves a lot to be desired. Where the film shines is with its star, Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth brings life to Thor and absolutely commands the screen. He is funny, charismatic, and badass throughout the film. Also, watching him learn Earth customs is one of the best parts of the movie.

The fish out of water story works in this film, but the story about the God of Thunder learning to become the king of Asgard falls to the wayside. The movie isn’t bad, it just isn’t what we wanted to see.

18. “Ant-Man and the Wasp”

Ant-Man 2

After “Avengers: Infinity War,” audiences were left depressed. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” appears to have been Marvel’s attempt to lighten the mood. In a lot of ways, it does. In other ways, it completely disrupts the pacing.

Like its predecessor, the film is still a lot of fun. Paul Rudd is hilarious as Scott Lang. Some of his scenes in this movie are some of the funniest in the entire MCU:

Where the film falls short is the story. Ant-Man and Wasp are in a race against time against a new villain, Ghost, to rescue Wasp’s mother, Janet Van-Dyne. Ant-Man and the Wasp simply want to rescue her while Ghost wants to use her to cure her disease, which may, in return, kill Janet.

Although it is a breath of fresh air to have a movie without a basic villain who wants to take over the world, Ghost is no Thanos.

17. “Iron Man 2”

Iron Man 2

For a lot of people, “Iron Man 2” might fall lower on the list. To be fair, they’re not wrong.

Tony Stark’s charisma and sarcasm are replaced with him being obnoxious and standoffish:

Where the movie bounces back is with literally every other aspect. The action is a lot of fun. The supporting characters are a lot of fun, and even the villains are fun. Sure, Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash is a far cry from Loki or Thanos. However, Whiplash AND Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer make it fun. I mean come on, the scene at the congressional hearing where Tony rips apart Hammer is incredible:

Although the action can be lacking, when it is good, it’s a lot of fun. Watching Iron Man and War Machine mow down drones is an example of when a CG battle can actually look cool. “The Incredible Hulk” should have taken notes.

16. “Avengers: Age of Ultron”

Avengers 2

This movie has a lot of things going for it. The action is incredible. The new characters are a lot of fun to watch. Also, the events it sets in motion define the rest of the MCU up until the end of Phase 3.

Where the film falls apart is in its villain and main story. Ultron certainly looks intimidating, but he’s just annoying. Every line out of his mouth sounds like a fortune cookie or a cringe-worthy Tumblr post:

Loki from the previous Avengers movie was built up in “Thor.” Thanos was built up since the end of Phase One and in various small appearances until “Avengers: Infinity War.” Ultron is born, lives, and dies all in this film. In a series that prides itself on creating characters over multiple films, Ultron’s short life just pales in comparison.

In the “Age of Ultron” comics, Ultron is an unstoppable force that the Avengers are simply unable to defeat on the battlefield. The only way they are able to beat him is by going back in time and stopping his creator, Hank Pym, from making him in the first place. In the film, Ultron ultimately loses to the superpower of teamwork. Yawn.

Fast-forward to the cooler scenes in the movie like Iron Man fighting Hulk or when they all try lifting Mjolnir. Other than that, there’s no need to bother. However, it might be worth looking into whether or not you can lift Thor’s hammer. You know, in case Frost Giants ever invade the Earth.

15. “Doctor Strange”

Doctor Strange

Visually, this movie is on par with movies like “Inception.” The story is cool, and the action is insane:

The story’s weakness is its main character. Benedict Cumberbatch is a great actor and Scott Derrickson is a good director. However, they both just couldn’t quite make a likable protagonist.

Doctor Strange is a jerk throughout the movie. Although he falls on the side of good at the end of the film, he’s selfish and cocky for the first 80%. Characters like Spider-Man and Ant-Man make mistakes in their films, but their motivations are always pure. Strange acts like a god among ants, so it’s hard to relate to him or even root for him sometimes.

However, at the end of the day, this film still looks absolutely spectacular. For goodness sake, just watch this part:

That was bananas.

Scenes like that make this movie still fun to watch on subsequent viewings. Just be prepared to do a lot of eye-rolling whenever Strange opens his mouth.

14.  “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2”

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

The first Guardians of the Galaxy film is pretty much loved universally. While its sequel is decent, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2” just doesn’t capture the same lightning in a bottle as the original.

The original cast is back aside from Groot being several feet shorter. This time, the Guardians are out to stop Star-Lord’s estranged father Ego from destroying the galaxy.

The characters are still a lot of fun, and the story is decent. It just simply doesn’t have near the same level of action or humor that we wanted. Although, this scene is still awesome:

The strongest part of the movie is Yondu and his journey to redemption. The movie goes into much more detail about his father-son relationship with Star-Lord, and the reasoning behind his actions.

Is he cool? Hell yeah, he’s cool.

If you’re looking for more of the same Guardians action you loved in the original, this one won’t disappoint you.

13. “Spider-Man: Far From Home”

Spider-Man: Far From Home“Spider-Man: Far From Home” has a lot of great scenes, but they don’t quite equate to a phenomenal final product.

In the final film in Phase 3, we see a world trying to rebuild itself after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” People who were killed when Thanos snapped his fingers (they call it “the blip” in the movie) are now trying to find a way to fit back into society. Also, the world looks for the answer for who will become the next Iron Man after Tony Stark’s tragic death.

Peter Parker feels a huge weight on his shoulders as he feels the burden to take over where Stark left off has fallen on him. However, he isn’t done being a kid. He wants to hang out with his friends, go on a vacation, and tell his crush how he feels. When Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) enters the fray and appears to be the next great superhero, Spidey sees a way out for him!

With two great end credits scenes, awesome action scenes, great comedy, and a few cool twists, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” has no shortage of great scenes. However, the movie doesn’t exactly do a good job of capping off Phase 3. Although it’s nice to have some lighthearted fun after having our hearts ripped out in Endgame, we would’ve preferred something that gave us a better idea of what to expect in Phase 4.

12. “Ant-Man”

Ant-Man

At the end of “Age of Ultron,” the MCU formula was getting tired. Every movie was feeling like more of the same, and the franchise was in desperate need of a breath of fresh air.

Never would we have guessed that the change we were looking for was in “Ant-Man.”

In many ways, “Ant-Man” is a lot like most other superhero movies. There is an origin story followed by training to become a hero, and it all culminates into an epic final battle. Where the movie differs is in its execution. The action is unlike anything else in the MCU thus far:

Ant-Man fights unlike anyone else in that he uses the environment to his advantage. Him switching between normal-size and ant-size mid-fight is awesome and adds a whole new dimension to the action.

“Ant-Man” also might be the funniest movie in the entire MCU, and we don’t say that lightly. We could listen to Luis tell a story all day:

11. “Captain America: The First Avenger”

Captain America

First, let’s do introductions:

Now that that’s out of the way, this movie is an absolute jam. It is physically impossible to watch this movie without a smile crossing your face.

This is the movie that cemented Chris Evans in the role of Captain America. He finds a way to capture all of Cap’s motivations while still making him an interesting complex character. He goes from inspiring to heroic to tragic, all in the same film.

The movie also does a great job of capturing America in the 1940s. From the scenery to the wardrobes, to even how people act, it feels like virtual time travel.

The only part of the movie that needs a little work is the action. We don’t get a lot of shield throwing/bashing action. However, what we do get is phenomenal. Basically, we could do this all day.

10. “Iron Man”

Iron Man

The movie that started it all.

“Iron Man” doesn’t have the same luster it had when it was first released, but it is still a great film to watch today:

In this film, Robert Downey Jr. becomes Iron Man the same way Heath Ledger became Joker and Christopher Reeve became Superman. His charm, charisma, and wit perfectly reflect the Tony Stark we know from the comics.

From start to finish, both Downey Jr. and Iron Man rocket across the screen, giving us a non-stop ride with great action and comedy. The only hiccup in the film is the main villain, Obadiah Stane, the Iron Monger. Stane is played by the incredible Jeff Bridges, but his character does not fit in the story as well as he could. Let’s just say, The Dude does not abide with him.

Iron Man was the role Downey Jr. was born to play. He’s been Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chaplin, and a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude. However, as he says, he is Iron Man.

9. “Spider-Man: Homecoming”

Spider-Man Homecoming

We’ve seen Peter Parker’s origin twice before on the big screen.

We don’t need to see him get bit by a spider again. We don’t need to see him fumble with learning his powers. Also, we don’t need to see Uncle Ben die again.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” isn’t the origin story we have seen over and over again, and instead replaces it with a coming-of-age tale. Also, he can do a flip!

Spidey is played by Tom Holland, and for the first time on the big screen, he finally looks like a high school kid. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air to see an adolescent play Parker, and not a guy clearly in his late 20s, early 30s.

Along with a great performance from Michael Keaton as Vulture, we get a great movie with phenomenal action. The two play off each other very well as Holland grows more and more into a superhero.

Hopefully, Jake Gyllenhaal will give us just as good a performance in “Spider-Man: Far From Home:”

While also being a great action star, Holland gets lots of sympathy from the audience. At the end of the day, he’s still a kid who is in over his head. When he struggles, you root for him. When he triumphs, you cheer for him.

The story all culminates in a twist-ending that shakes audience members to their core. If you haven’t seen it yet, swing on in for a thrilling experience.

8. “The Avengers”

The Avengers

When “The Avengers” first hit theaters, audience members were calling it the greatest superhero movie ever made.

Let’s dial it back a notch.

“The Avengers” is a phenomenal film on epic proportions, but it is far from perfect. The movie is basically one-liners and action scenes from start to finish.

Although the formula has since been duplicated to mixed results, this was the first time we saw a group of superheroes across multiple films come together.

Although we got better Avengers adventures later on, this is still a noteworthy movie that still holds up.

7. “Thor: Ragnarok”

Thor 3

The first Thor movie didn’t have enough Asgardian lore to keep our interests and the second missed the mark with almost every joke.

“Thor: Ragnarok,” on the other, hand nailed both those areas on the head, with incredible lore and a mythical story to keep our interests.

The film even played classic Led Zeppelin songs over some of the actions scenes to further add to the awesomeness.

Thor goes through character development in this movie different from the previous films. In this movie, Thor fails and has to seek redemption. He has to surpass overwhelming odds that don’t always require swinging a hammer super hard.

Even better, Kat Dennings is nowhere to be found. Instead, we get one of the greatest comedic duos in comic book history:

6. “Guardians of the Galaxy”

Guardians of the Galaxy

“What a bunch of a-holes.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy comics are some of the lesser-known ones from Marvel. Prior to the movies, you’d seldom see a Groot or Starlord cosplay at a convention. However, after the movies, they are now some of the most recognizable characters in the entire Marvel Universe.

What makes the movies so great is the team chemistry. Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, and Drax all have their own distinct personalities that play off each other so well.

The action is fun, and the jokes are funny, but it’s how the characters interact with this creative environment that makes the film so great.

We can watch Groot mess around while Rocket yells at him, or Drax struggle with cultural norms all day. This ragtag gang never gets old.

5. “Black Panther”

Black Panther

Wakanda forever!

Securing a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, “Black Panther” deserved all the praise it got.

What makes this film so incredible is Michael B. Jordan’s character Erik Killmonger. Killmonger has this tragic backstory that feeds into his overwhelming hatred for both his cousin T’Challa and Wakanda.

The true star of the movie is Wakanda itself. Wakanda is absolutely stunning. Seeing the African culture mixed into the set design and costume design is truly breathtaking. There isn’t another movie that looks like this, let alone another MCU movie.

Honestly, there’s so much cool stuff that went into making this movie that we made a list talking about it:

There’s a reason why this film won three Oscars.

4. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”

Captain America 2

When it comes to the MCU, aside from James Gunn, the director(s) that probably stand out are the Russo brothers.

The four MCU films directed by the Russo brothers are not only great, but they’re also the top four films on this list.

In the first Captain America movie, Cap was the star-spangled man with the plan who fought for all things America. In the two Cap films directed by the Russo brothers, we see Cap thinking for himself more, and questioning the government that made him. This results in intense and suspenseful action sequences:

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was their first movie. The film feels more like a spy film than a superhero flick. Cap and Black Widow work to uncover the secrets of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s dark past while also on the run from Winter Soldier.

The movie’s main twist before the climax was obvious to fan’s of the comics, but played out well in the film nonetheless.

The action really takes off in the fight sequences between Cap and Winter Soldier:

James Young serves as the fight choreographer for the movie. After this picture, Marvel brought him back to work on the fight choreography in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies and every Avengers film thereafter.

If you are looking for an espionage flick with some of the best hand-to-iron-hand fight scenes, look no further.

3. “Captain America: Civil War”

Captain America 3

Where “Age of Ultron” fell flat, “Captain America: Civil War” felt more like the Avengers sequel we deserved.

The movie had a difficult task ahead of it. Not only did it have to adapt one of the most popular Marvel comic series, but it had to introduce two big superheroes: Spider-Man and Black Panther.

The movie does a great job of showing every character’s motivations as to whose side they take. It also doesn’t dwell on them. The movie also does a good job of changing a major issue from the comic series. It replaces the Superhuman Registration Act with the Sokovia Accords.

In the comics, the act requires all superhumans to register themselves and reveal their secret identity. Cap and a team of other superheroes disagree with the act and refuse to sign, just like in the movie. Here’s where the comics don’t really make sense: There aren’t a lot of superheroes with secret identities in the MCU.

The only person the act really affects is Spider-Man, and he willingly sides with Iron Man.

Spider-Man Civil War

With Peter Parker abiding by the act, there’s really no need to fight. Yet, the comic series paints Iron Man and his team as the bad guy.

In the movie, the Sokovia Accords require all superhumans to only engage a situation when approved by a United Nations committee. Iron Man carries a lot of guilt from “Age of Ultron,” so he leads the charge for the accords. Cap, on the other hand, questions them as he is still regaining his trust in the government after finding Hydra sleeper agents in S.H.I.E.L.D.

This all culminates into a battle with Cap’s side and Iron Man’s side at the airport. The fight scene speaks for itself:

At the end of the film, the Avengers are more divided than ever, thanks to Baron Zemo. Zemo is essentially what Lex Luthor should have been in “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Even though the heroes know he is manipulating them, they simply do not care; their urge to fight each other is now stronger than their will to forgive.

This is a near-perfect comic book movie, and yet it is only our number 3.

2. “Avengers: Endgame”

Avengers Endgame

This movie missed the top spot by a hair.

“Avengers: Endgame” gave us satisfying conclusions to characters nearly a decade in the making. It wrapped up the Thanos saga with a ribbon, giving us a final battle scene we will be rewatching over and over again.

The only flaw in the film is in how little we can really rewatch the entire movie. The first time you see it, it’s incredible and you are glued to the screen from start to finish. On subsequent viewings, you really feel the three-hour runtime a lot more. Once it comes out on Blu-ray and streaming services, we expect that we’ll mainly just watch the last hour.

Throw one or two more action scenes throughout the film, and this takes the top spot, no questions asked. However, it’s still a tremendous film and a dramatic conclusion for some of our favorite characters.

1. “Avengers: Infinity War”

Avengers Infinity Wars

Few films leave audience members as somber as “Avengers: Infinity War” did. After your first viewing, you are left with a cold sweat and an overwhelming fear for our heroes takes over. However, in an almost masochistic fashion, we can watch this one over and over again.

The film is non-stop action and character development. We see characters meet each other for the first time in memorable scenes that eventually become intense battles.

The star of the film is Thanos. The Russo brothers took the Thanos from the comics and without a doubt made him 10 times better.

In the comics, Thanos is motivated by his love for Mistress Death, the literal interpretation of death in the Marvel universe. Thanos wants to wipe out half of all life in the universe with the Infinity Stones in order to court her.

Thanos snap

In the movie, Thanos wants to do the same thing, but because he thinks the universe will run out of resources at its current rate of expansion.

The film has some of the best action in all of the MCU. It has some of the best humor in all of the MCU. However, it has THE best story in the entire MCU.

Complete Guide to Shang-Chi

From his controversial beginnings to his work with the Avengers, Shang-Chi has a long, complicated history.

Shang-Chi

After Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced the new movie “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” at San Diego Comic-Con, many fans had the same reaction:

“Who the heck is Shang-Chi?”

If this was you, then you need to read this guide to learn everything there is to know about this master of Kung-Fu before we get to see Simu Liu bring the character to the big screen.

Complete guide to Shang-Chi

Who is Shang-Chi?

He’s a ripoff?

Shang-Chi
Special Marvel Edition #15: The first appearance of Shang-Chi

Shang-Chi first appeared in 1973. He is known as the master of Kung-Fu. In 1972, there was a wildly popular show called “Kung-Fu.” Kids loved it. It starred a martial arts student who learns the way of the fist from his sensei. The famous “if you can snatch the pebble from my hand…” line as well as calling your pupil “grasshopper” originated from this show.

Marvel wanted to adapt the show into a comic series but was denied by the show’s network. So, Marvel made a similar comic series to capitalize on the growing Kung-Fu fad. Basically, Shang-Chi is a ripoff of a popular ’70s TV show.

His dad is a complicated man

Fu Manchu

According to his origin, Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu. However, this was changed in later comics.

For those who don’t know, Fu Manchu was a character played by Christopher Lee in the 1960s. He is an evildoer who veers headfirst into Asian stereotypes… and he was played by a white guy. Needless to say, Fu Manchu was a very racist depiction.

However, Fu Manchu was very popular when he was around, so Marvel got the rights to make Fu Manchu comics. Later on, Marvel lost the rights to Fu Manchu, which left them with a predicament with Shang-Chi. In 2010 in an issue of “Secret Avengers” it is discovered that Fu Manchu was merely an alias, and Shang-Chi’s father’s true name is Zheng Zu.

Marvel would probably rather not make a Shang-Chi movie altogether than make one with the PR nightmare that is Fu Manchu, so losing the rights to him was a blessing in disguise.

shang chi mandarin

Later on, Zheng Zu faced even more development. He soon became the ruler of the Ten Rings, taking on the mantle of the Mandarin. As the new Mandarin, he led the Ten Rings to try to overthrow K’un L’un (more on that later), but was ultimately stopped by Shang-Chi.

Powers and abilities

Although Shang-Chi mainly relies on hand-to-hand combat, he does at times use a sword, a staff, and nunchucks. However, he’s got nothing on Michaelangelo.

Later on, Marvel realized that if you don’t have superpowers, you can’t really stand out in a world of superheroes. As a result, Shang-Chi obtained the ability to create copies of himself.

Shang Chi

What is his story?

Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu (Zheng Zu) and a white American woman who his father genetically selected.

Not much of a love story.

Fu Manchu trained Shang-Chi in the ways of martial arts and being an assassin. While on a mission for his father, Shang-Chi learned that Fu Manchu was actually evil. He then swore to his father that he’d devote his life to taking him down.

Basically, most Shang-Chi comics are about him thwarting his father’s various plans.

Affiliations

Despite his controversial beginnings, Shang-Chi was a pretty big hit for Marvel. He appeared in several more special editions and even fought alongside other martial artists like Iron Fist and even became an honorary Avenger.

In fact, he once joined forces with the Avengers alongside Captain America to thwart the Mandarin and save the world.

shang chi avengers

Quite often, Shang-Chi is a secondary character in most stories and another character like Iron Fist or Captain America has the lead role.

Isn’t he basically just Iron Fist?

Shang Chi

Although they have a few differences in their powers, Shang-Chi and Iron Fist have a lot in common. First off, both of them have a shared bond with the mystical land of K’un L’un.

K’un L’un is a hidden world filled with monks who train night and day in martial arts. Their champion is the Iron Fist who is a living weapon filled with all the power of K’un L’un.

Although they are both martial artists, they have different fighting styles. Iron Fist heavily relies on his abilities as the living weapon to make his fists glow with fiery energy for more devastating attacks.

Although Shang-Chi has the ability to copy himself, he seldom uses it. He prefers to fight hand-to-hand rather than on other methods. As a result, even Iron Fist has admitted that Shang-Chi is the greatest martial artist in the world.

Luke Cage Shang-Chi

Despite their similar fighting styles, Iron Fist and Shang-Chi have very different personalities. Iron Fist’s abilities as the living weapon make him overly confident and cocky with his abilities. Also, Iron Fist finds pleasure in thwarting his enemies while Shang-Chi views his battles as a necessary evil.

Who are the Ten Rings?

Tony Stark Ten Rings

The Ten Rings is a criminal organization run by the Mandarin. It gets its name from the 10 rings worn by the Mandarin that grant him powers. These powers include:

  • Rearranging matter
  • Shooting beams
  • Creating vortexes
  • A beam that disintegrates things
  • A light that casts everything into darkness
  • A light that makes magnetic fields
  • Shooting flames
  • Shooting lighting
  • Mind control
  • Shooting ice

Man, where were these things when the Avengers needed them against Thanos?

Basically, the Mandarin is one of the toughest guys around, and he is hellbent on world domination. As a result, the Ten Rings follow him for a piece of the action.

The Ten Rings have already made their presence known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were the terrorists who captured Tony Stark in “Iron Man.” They also assisted Whiplash in “Iron Man 2.” Finally, in “Ant-Man,” a member of the Ten Rings was at Pym Laboratories.

Ten Rings
See the tattoo?

The Ten Rings were also featured in “Iron Man 3.” If you remember, Ben Kingsley played an actor who was playing the Mandarin. However, in a special Marvel made afterward, fans learned that the real Mandarin was actually out there.

What will the movie be about?

Marvel hasn’t revealed much about “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” so this is just a theory. It will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Tony Leung will play the Mandarin.

We know for a fact that the movie will feature both the Ten Rings and the Mandarin. In Marvel’s “Secret Wars” Zheng Zu (Shang-Chi’s father) is the Mandarin and the leader of the Ten Rings. Our theory is that the movie will follow this route as Shang-Chi fights against his father to dismantle the Ten Rings from the inside out.

Wrapping up

Do you think “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is going to be a decent movie, or do you think it will be a swing and a miss? Let us know in the comments below! Also, make sure you share this guide with your friends so they can learn about Shang-Chi as well!

5 things we want to see in the Blade movie

We’re going to need buckets of blood and lot’s of swears in order to pull this off.

BladeIt came as quite a shock when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Mahershala Ali announced that there will be a Blade move in the MCU.

If you grew up in the late ’90s or early 2000s, you probably remember the three Wesley Snipe Blade movies. Although they have a bit of a fan base, most fans of the comics agree that the movies were cheesy and a bit campy.

A new movie means a fresh start for Blade. However, there are a few things that Marvel Studios needs to get right if the movie is going to attract new fans and old fans. As huge fans of both Blade and the MCU, we decided to take a look at the things we can reasonably hope for in a Blade movie that will make everyone happy.

5 things we want in the Blade movie

5. For it to be wayyyy less cheesy than the Wesley Snipes movies

Even though the Wesley Snipes movies were filled with gore and swears thanks to its R rating, it still was filled with cheesy dialogue like this:

VIDEO IS NSFW

Mahershala Ali is a two-time Oscar winner and an extremely respected actor. Bad one-liners will sound very unnatural coming out of his mouth. Since it’s the MCU, there will still be some humor here and there, but if he remains stern and serious for the majority of the film, we’re in for a treat!

4. For it to be just as dark and gritty as the comics

The Blade comics are pretty dark and hardcore. Blade’s mother was a prostitute who was killed and eaten by a vampire as she was giving birth to Blade.

Luckily, Blade’s mom’s hooker friends fended off the vampire before he could chow down on Blade.

Blade was raised at his mom’s old brothel where he grew his hatred for vampires. He also learned the how-tos of killing vampires. Before the age of 10, Blade was already preying on weaker vampires.

Since this is the MCU, we don’t expect to see a pregnant woman get eaten by a vampire who is considering eating the baby for dessert. However, Blade can’t just be given the standard tragic backstory. He needs to be born into blood to feed into his hatred for vampires.

3. A precursor to Marvel Zombies

MArvel Zombies

Although he eventually was infected, Blade was part of the zombie resistance in “Marvel Zombies.”

“Marvel Zombies” was one time where the Marvel comics dove into the realm of horror. In it, many of our favorite heroes have been zombified, and it’s up to a resistance of uninfected to save the world.

Since “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is supposed to be the MCU’s first horror movie, “Marvel Zombies” is a logical next step. If the MCU were to slap this at the end of “Blade,” this could be one of the best end credits scenes in all of the MCU.

2. Tie it into the MCU in a way that makes sense

Okay, so some pretty silly stuff happens in the MCU, but it all makes sense.

Sure, there’s a talking raccoon, a talking tree, wizards, magic hammers, and a whole bunch of other nonsense. However, there isn’t anything that doesn’t fit into the world the writers have created.

In the world of Blade, not only are vampires real but so is Dracula. That would mean throughout the entirety of the MCU, there were secretly vampires the entire time. With all of these huge criminal organizations like the Ten Rings and Hydra, we can’t help but think they would’ve stumbled upon the world’s vampire underbelly, and recruited some to defeat the Avengers. Basically, if the MCU just says “there were vampires the whole time,” it would be pretty silly.

We’re fine with introducing vampires, but the writers need to find a creative way to bring them in that not only makes sense but fits the series.

1. An R rating

This cannot be stressed enough: “Blade” needs to be rated R.

The amount of blood, gore, and swearing that will be necessary to make this movie demands an R rating. We have R ratings with the Deadpool movies, so why not Blade?

If he appears in tie-in movies with the rest of the MCU, it can go back down to PG or PG-13, but the writers really need to take off the kid gloves with this one.

Wrapping up

The MCU has rarely disappointed us, so we are going into “Blade” with loads of optimism. However, if Steve Rogers doesn’t shout “language” at least 50 times during the course of this movie, we won’t be happy.

Guide to Marvel Phase 4: Everything you need to know

From Blade to female Thor, Marvel revealed so much at Comic-Con!

Portman Thor

To say the MCU dropped a bomb at their Comic-Con panel this year would be an understatement. They dropped a nuke on the stage and then dropped a few smaller bombs while they were at it.

At the Comic-Con panel, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige along with an abundance of actors, actresses, and filmmakers gave us details on five Disney+ shows, five Phase 4 movies, and a few other projects.

There is a LOT to talk about. Once you’re done reading this article, let’s take the discussion to the comments section below to keep the conversation and the speculation going!

Guide to Marvel Phase 4

Phase 4

It is important to point out that although this is Marvel’s current complete line-up for Phase 4, Feige says things can change:

For example, as Phase 2 was ending in 2015, Marvel Studios acquired the rights to put Spider-Man in their films. Obviously, this changed up the future of Phase 3 quite significantly with Spider-Man appearing in five movies including two of his own.

The Disney+ shows

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Falcon and Winter Soldier

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” will feature Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles. It is coming out in fall of 2020, and deals with the two character’s lives after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Falcon has a new weight on his shoulders as he is now expected to take up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers went back in time for that long-awaited dance.

Along with Stan and Mackie, Daniel Brühl will be returning to reprise his role as Baron Zemo. Zemo was the main villain in “Captain America: Civil War.” His family was killed during the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and since he didn’t fully get his revenge in “Civil War,” he may want to continue to dismantle the Avengers in “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

Loki

During “Avengers: Endgame” the Loki of 2012 made a quick getaway by stealing the Space Stone. “Loki” for Disney+ will follow the God of Mischief as he makes his way through the universe.

Wait, didn’t Loki die?

Yes, he did die in “Avengers: Infinity War.” However, the show will be following an alternate timeline Loki. This Loki hasn’t gone through the character development Loki experienced in “Thor 2: The Dark World” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” so he is in need of redemption. Apparently, this Loki will be traveling throughout the universe with the Space Stone getting into loads of adventures along the way.

Hopefully, since he has an Infinity Stone, his path may cross with Thanos and we’ll get to see Josh Brolin’s return!

“Loki” will be released on Disney+ in Spring of 2021.

WandaVision

Both Scarlett Witch and Vision will return for new adventures in “WandaVision.”

Wait, isn’t Vision dead?

Yes, Thanos ripped the Mind Stone from Vision’s forehead.

However, as we have seen, the MCU is not afraid to bring people back from the dead. Just ask, Agent Coulson, Loki, and everyone that died in the Snap. We expect that Black Panther’s sister Shuri might be able to use her tech to bring him back, or Scarlet Witch will just magic him back from the dead.

Feige promised that characters will return in the show, including Monica Rambeau. Her character was in “Captain Marvel,” which took place in the ’90s. Now, she is a grown woman, and she’s ready to get into the action in “WandaVision.”

Events in the show are expected to lead into “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” Also, Elizabeth Olsen will be playing Scarlet Witch in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” but more on that later.

“WandaVision” will be released on Disney+ in Spring of 2021.

What If

In the summer of 2021, Disney+ will feature the first animated endeavor in the MCU.

“What If” tackles alternative scenarios in the MCU. More specifically, it tackles “what if” situations. These are scenarios where things didn’t go the way they went in the MCU. They are named after the comics that bear the same name.

Most of the MCU alumni from the movies will return to voice their characters, but there is no official list of who will return. However, we do know that the following will be included:

  • Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger
  • Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier
  • Josh Brolin as Thanos
  • Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk
  • Tom Hiddleston as Loki
  • Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor
  • Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter
  • Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther
  • Karen Gillan as Nebula
  • Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
  • Paul Rudd as Ant-Man
  • Michael Douglas as Hank Pym
  • Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan
  • Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark
  • Sean Gunn as Kraglin
  • Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
  • Taika Waititi as Korg
  • Toby Jones as Arnim Zola
  • Djimon Hounsou as Korath
  • Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster
  • Michael Rooker as Yondu

Since they weren’t listed, we doubt Chris Evans will return as Captain America or Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man for the first season. However, if they show does well, they might come back for a second season.

The show will also bring on Jeffrey Wright who will play the Watcher. The Watcher is a being in the Marvel universe who observes history unfold, but does not get involved. You might remember seeing several Watchers in “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.”

Hawkeye

In the fall of 2021, Clint Barton will begin training Kate Bishop to become the newest bow-and-arrow-wielding master in “Hawkeye.”

Jeremy Renner and Kevin Feige remained pretty tight-lipped about this project. This is probably because it’s more than two years away and a lot can change.

However, we do know that the series will dive into Barton’s time as Ronin. Between “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” Barton began ridding the world of evildoers who survived Thanos’ snap. He did this under the guise of “Ronin.” It could be that the sins of Barton’s past may come back to haunt him.

The movies

Endgame

Black Widow

TaskMaster

It might seem a bit odd, but the MCU will kick off Phase 4 with a prequel.

Set during the events of Agent Romanoff’s famous Budapest mission, “Black Widow” will dive into the agent’s origins, her previous relationships, and the red in her ledger.

Fans at Comic-Con got to see a small teaser which Disney is adamantly trying to make sure stays off YouTube, but we did hear about what it showed:

Along with lots of awesome Black Widow stunts, the trailer showed Widow’s sister character Yelena as her relationship with Romanoff develops.

Finally, the trailer ended with a brief glimpse at another villain in the movie, which many fans speculate is Taskmaster. Taskmaster is a mercenary as well as a sort of supervillain coach. Basically, he is sometimes hired to help train people on how to be villains.

He’s basically Robbie Rotten meets The Punisher:

Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz will be playing Melina Vostokoff aka Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden is one of the classic villains in the Black Widow comics. Finally, David Harbour is joining the cast as Red Guardian, a Soviet superhero. Funny enough, Red Guardian’s real name is Alexei, which is the name of the Russian that Harbour’s character joins forces with in “Stranger Things.”

The Eternals

Eternals

If your Marvel knowledge is only confined to their most popular characters, then you;ve probably never heard about the Eternals.

Basically, they are ACTUALLY Earth’s mightiest heroes. The Eternals are immortal cosmic beings (basically, they’re aliens) that have godlike powers and abilities.

One thing to point out is that Thanos himself was a member of the Eternals in the comics. It will be interesting to see if the MCU will dive into that plot point once the film comes out in November of 2020.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang Chi

Much like the Eternals, you’ve probably never heard about Shang-Chi.

Without question, he’s probably the least-known Marvel superhero to get a standalone MCU movie.

He’s a martial arts master who can also duplicate himself.

As you probably know, in “Iron Man 3” Ben Kingsley played a fake version of the villain the Mandarin. However, as you might not know, Marvel created a short called “All Hail the King,” where we learned that there is a real Mandarin who is not happy about what has happened to his name.

Thankfully, we are going to get to see the Mandarin in all of his glory as he graces the screen in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

The Ten Rings is a terrorist organization who has been involved in the MCU since the start. They kidnapped Tony Stark, assisted Whiplash, and they even infiltrated Pym Laboratories!

Look at the neck tattoo on the guy with the beard. Does that emblem look familiar?

We don’t know who will be the next big bad guy in the MCU, but the Ten Rings and the Mandarin would be a phenomenal choice. The Mandarin’s mystic arts could create a new web of problems for the Avengers resulting in some great movies. Whether it’s a hit or a flop, we will find out in February of 2021.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange

I wonder if in those 14 million futures Doctor Strange saw, he saw his character going down this route.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will be Marvel’s first dive into the world of horror.

No, it will not be rated R. According to Feige, the movie will be rated PG-13.

Although we don’t know much about the movie, we do know that the events of “WandaVision” will lead into the movie. Also, Scarlet Witch herself will be a main character in the film. Whether or not Vision will make an appearance is yet to be known, however, if we get more awesome scenes like Strange’s fight with Thanos, we will be happy campers.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Finally, bringing Phase 4 to a close will be “Thor: Love and Thunder” in November of 2021.

Chris Hemsworth will be returning as the God of Thunder, and Tessa Thompson will be returning as Valkyrie. Speaking of whom, Marvel confirmed that Valkyrie will be the MCU’s first openly LGBTQ superhero!

The movie will take place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” with Thor soul-searching for the next stage of his life. However, the next stage of his life might just be the end because a new Thor is set to make her debut.

Female Thor

That’s right, the female version of Thor will be featured in “Thor: Love and Thunder!” Even better, Natalie Portman will be reprising her role as Jane Foster who will wield the hammer and become the new Thor.

In the comics, Thor loses his powers and the ability to wield his hammer. However, a successor is deemed worthy as a new female character becomes the new Thor.

Clearly, Natalie Portman is worthy to wield the hammer. However, are you?

Other projects

Blade

At the end of the panel, Mahershala Ali surprised everyone by coming on stage. At the request of Feige, he donned a baseball cap with “Blade” written across it.

Wait, haven’t there already been a few Blade movies?

Between the late ’90s and the mid-2000s, Wesley Snipes starred in three Blade movies. Although they do have a few fans, they never really attained a huge audience, and they especially never made MCU money. However, the R rating in each film meant that we got lots of gore and lots of adult language.

WARNING: Video is NSFW

Blade is part-human and part-vampire, but he isn’t a fan of that second half of his DNA. He hunts down and kills vampires across the world.

Yes, vampires exist in the Marvel universe.

He uses a wide array of weapons including guns, anti-vampire gear, knives, and explosives. However, he is best known for fighting off vampires with a samurai sword.

The movie will not be a part of Phase 4, so don’t expect to see anything about it until 2022.

Pretty much none of us anticipated a new Blade movie, but now all anyone can think is how could we NOT want a new Blade movie. If the MCU FINALLY gives us a movie with an R rating, we will be overjoyed. (Remember R-rated “Deadpool” wasn’t a part of the official MCU until Disney acquired Fox earlier this year.)

Think about it. How can you give us a gory, vampire slasher that’s not rated R?

Untitled Fantastic Four movie

Although it was only for a second, we did hear from Feige that Marvel Studios is working on a Fantastic Four movie.

Wait, haven’t we had, like, a million Fantastic Four movies?

We have had three Fantastic Four movies and none of them has been very good. The movie “Fantastic Four” in 2015 with Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan is arguably one of the worst superhero movies ever made:

Hopefully, Disney and Marvel can do the Fantastic Four justice. It will all start with a great cast, so hopefully, Reed Richards, Susan Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm will finally get their due.

*cough *cough Cast John Krasinski as Reed Richards *cough *cough.

A Fantastic Four movie might mean that Doctor Doom is coming to the MCU. If he does, then we might just the next big villain to take the reins from Thanos.

Stuff we know is coming:

Although none of these got trailers, we did hear word that we will be getting the following sequels:

  • Captain Marvel 2
  • Black Panther 2
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3
  • A bunch more Spider-Man movies

The mutants and the X-Men are coming

Don’t worry, the X-Men were mentioned by Feige at Comic-Con.

The X-Men/mutants will be in the MCU in the future. We might not know where they will fit in, but we hope to hear more about them soon!

 Wrapping up

Wow, that was a LOT to cover.

From the Disney+ shows, to the array of new movies, we have so much to look forward to in the next two years. Right now, we are betting that “Thor: Love and Thunder” will be the best movie of the lot. However, we will be happy to be proven wrong!

Complete MCU timeline explained

Confused about Marvel’s timelines? This video should help!

Avengers Endgame Captain America fight

With “Avengers: Endgame” and the upcoming “Spider-Man: Far From Home“, we’re quickly wrapping up Marvel’s Phase 3. For the avid Marvel fan there’s a wealth of awesome content in the past 10 years of movies, but for the novice who’s looking to hop aboard the hype train, there’s something of a learning curve.

Even if you’ve been following these films since Jon Favreau kicked them off with “Iron Man” in 2008, you might be scratching your head trying to remember whether Odin’s father killed the Dark Elves before Red Skull was born. Or maybe you’ve got no idea when Thanos adopted Gamora. Perhaps you can’t quite recall how many times the Tesseract traded hands. Lucky for us, Looper recently put out this handy timeline video that charts out the entire MCU timeline – everything from the Big Bang up to “Far From Home.” So strap in and buckle up; it’s a bumpy ride!

This video does a great job of fitting in all the concurrent events, and only slipped up on a few small details:

1. Ultron used the Mind Stone to create Vision, not the Soul Stone.

2. Zemo didn’t control Bucky to assassinate T’chaka; he did it himself while wearing a mask.

3. While this mentions “Agent Carter” it doesn’t bring up the littany of other Marvel Netflix shows, such as “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Daredevil,” or “Defenders.” Techincally these are canon too!

We hope this timeline helps straighten out some of the foggier details of the MCU.

Go ahead and bookmark this page if you need a quick reference once Phase 4 rolls around!

Why the Marvel Cinematic Universe works (and others don’t)

Why did the Avengers succeed while the Justice League flopped? Find out now!

Cap Thanos

The enormous success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe cannot be overstated. In just a few weeks, “Avengers: Endgame” has passed “Titanic” as the second highest grossing movie of all time, and is rapidly approaching “Avatar’s” number 1 spot. In fact, MCU movies make up half the spots of the top 10 highest box office grosses ever.

This brings us to the billion dollar question, “How did Marvel overtake mega-franchises like Harry Potter and Star Wars with characters that were once barely a blip in pop culture? Also, why have all the other cinematic universes failed to match its success?

Why the Marvel’s Cinematic Universe works (and others don’t)

Building a universe (in a cave with a box of scraps)

iron man 2008 start of mcu

In the 1990s, Marvel, like most comic book companies, was facing financial ruin. After filing for bankruptcy, Marvel attempted to save itself by selling off the film rights to its most popular characters.

Movie studios jumped at the chance to gain the rights to cultural powerhouses like Spider-Man and the X-Men (whose film rights were sold to Sony and Fox, respectively). Other Marvel characters, while beloved for decades by dedicated comic audiences, failed to break into the mainstream pop culture sphere. Characters like Thor and Iron Man are objectively cool, but they didn’t have the same draw as characters like Spidey or Wolverine.

After the breakout successes of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise and Fox’s X-Men series, Marvel decided to take out a loan of $500 million to create Marvel Studios. The idea behind Marvel Studios was that Marvel could use some of the lesser-known characters from its comic history to create a shared cinematic universe.

If the venture failed, the studio could simply liquidate itself and sell the film rights to its remaining characters to interested studios. Still owning the rights to the majority of the Avengers characters (most notably Captain America and Hulk), Marvel Studios attempted a bold strategy. They decided to make individual films of various characters before smashing them together in a massive blockbuster.

It was a bold and untried strategy at the time. Sure, studios had dabbled in crossing over their characters to modest success, (such as “Alien vs. Predator” or “Freddy vs. Jason”) but no studio had ever attempted to create a massive crossover universe out of an established property on this scale.

The only thing that was even close was the Universal Classic Monsters. From the ’20s through 1960, Universal created films with several monsters like Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, and the Wolf Man. From time to time, characters and their respective actors would cross over into other films. It was arguably a framework for the MCU, but it was a loose framework.

Marvel was the perfect property for this experiment, as the company had been crossing over its characters in the comics for decades.

Marvel Studios began with “Iron Man,” who was supposedly chosen to receive his own film due to his massive toy potential. The movie’s large budget, B-list main character, and at-the-time leperous main star Robert Downey Jr raised eyebrows among industry experts, who predicted a flop. In fact, Kevin Feige said Downey’s casting was the toughest fight he had with Disney. The 2008 movie was, as we all know, a massive success. It ended up singlehandedly recouping Marvel’s $500 million loan, convincing Marvel to move on with their experiment. The film made about $585 million, according to IMDb.

Iron Man’s approach to a cinematic universe was subtle. The film stood on its own, peppered with references to a larger universe (S.H.I.E.L.D, Nick Fury, the Avengers Initiative, etc) for hardcore Marvel fans to salivate over. The continued success of character films like “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Thor” maintained Marvel’s momentum until the release of the groundbreaking first Avengers film in 2012.

In building up to “The Avengers,” Marvel focused on telling self-contained stories with compelling characters first, and on connecting these characters in a shared universe second. By making these formerly unknown characters worthy in the eyes of the public, they drummed up interest for their eventual crossover. It’s this sense of patience that allowed for Marvel to craft its cinematic universe into something that was worth keeping up with. Their system of “phases” made sure that every crossover paid off in a big way.

Avengers

By building up audience confidence in their brand, Marvel was able to successfully dive deeper into their character library. Eventually, they pulled out then-unknown characters like Black Panther, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. While the rival DCEU hoped that the enduring legacies of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman would lead to massive box office success, Marvel built character legacies from the ground up.

With more than 20 movies in its universe, it can be hard to avoid audience fatigue. However, Marvel successfully navigated this by switching up genres and directors within its films. The films can range from spy-thriller (“Captain America: Winter Soldier”), heist-comedy (“Ant-Man”), cosmic misfit comedy (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), to Afrofuturist epic (“Black Panther”). Marvel’s signature style of loose dialogue and lighthearted, self-aware tone allowed them to create a consistent brand amongst its wide variety of characters without becoming repetitive.

Marvel Studios president and MCU brainchild Kevin Feige has stated that each movie is made for its own individual story first.

While the grand crossover outlines are there, directors and writers are given plenty of freedom to craft their own stories. This, along with Marvel’s patience in getting audiences invested in its characters, is the main reason the MCU has seen the success that it has. It builds naturally to crossover events instead of shoving a crossover movie in your face that tells you, not shows you, that these characters are important.

Why are other cinematic universes struggling?

justice league dceu

The runaway success of 2012’s “The Avengers” caught the attention of studio heads from across the world. The potential profits of a cinematic universe were massive, and every studio with recognizable characters immediately scrambled to follow Marvel’s lead. The most notable of these was, of course, DC.

With the release of 2013’s “Man of Steel,” DC had seemingly followed the formula set by “Iron Man:” create a standalone story with only cursory references to a larger universe. Unfortunately for DC, “Man of Steel” received only lukewarm reviews, with critics and audiences lamenting its dreary tone and color palette.

Sensing danger, DC decided to immediately move forward with its cinematic universe, or rather DC Extended Universe. DC continued with director Zack Snyder, whose bleak and pseudo-deep subversions of superhero narratives were clearly not resonating with audiences. The next film was “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” a film that was somehow overlong, stuffy, and unearned.

The movie immediately thrust new versions of Batman and Wonder Woman onto the big screen, failing to slowly build up the hype of a major crossover event.

By the time “Justice League” rolled around, DC showed that it still hadn’t learned how to properly build up a cinematic universe. It introduced more characters to the big screen without buildup (Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg,) rapidly attempting to play catch-up with Marvel to no avail. It would have been ludicrous to think only 10 years ago that a movie starring a talking raccoon and a tree would become a cultural phenomenon while the Justice League’s long-awaited big-screen debut would get a lukewarm reception.

By not trusting audiences and slowly building up their characters, DC made their crossover movies feel like any old superhero movie instead of a massive crossover event. This, combined with DC announcing dozens of movies that have barely made it past development hell, shattered audience faith in DC to make a coherent cinematic universe.

DC has started to regain goodwill with their solo movies like “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” and “Shazam!”  They are clearly moving away from lofty, pseudo-intelligent Snyder epics and more towards contained, tightly made stories. This has granted them significantly more critical and financial success, so it’s likely DC will focus on solo films for the near future.

Other cinematic universes have come and gone in the MCU’s lifetime. The X-Men franchise served as a sort of predecessor to the MCU, but its wildly inconsistent quality and haphazard continuity prevented it from fully achieving its potential.

Universal recently attempted combining their classic horror monsters into a modern cinematic universe known as the Dark Universe. Spearheaded with “The Mummy,” an action-packed Tom Cruise vehicle, the Dark Universe failed to take off before it really even started. Instead of creating a self-contained story that took place in a bigger world, “The Mummy” aggressively beat audiences over the head with setup for sequels and crossovers.

I mean come on, people; remember when they released a trailer for the movie without music?

This unsubtle, inauthentic buildup pushed audiences away, and the myriad of announced Dark Universe films are currently nowhere to be seen.

A particularly bold move is crossing over a bunch of properties that have nothing to do with each other (besides them all being owned by the same company). Hasbro is attempting to do this with its various properties such as GI Joe and Rom the Spaceknight. Hanna-Barbera is currently working on something similar with Scooby-Doo, Captain Caveman, and Wacky Races. It’s hard not to be cynical about mashups like these, as they seem to be brainchildren of studio executives throwing every remotely popular property they have into a blender. They are unfortunately completely skipping over the carefully laid groundwork of the MCU.

Wrapping up

All in all, the safest way to create a cinematic universe is simply to copy the foundation of the MCU. Create a bunch of compelling individual characters and then cross them over once audiences actually care. Do not simply throw a bunch of recognizable characters together, hoping it’ll have the same impact.

Planning must be careful and slow, and the studio must balance out their grand plans with the desires of individual filmmakers to craft independently satisfying films. If you can strike this balance successfully, you end up with the MCU. If you fail, you’ll simply land on top of the pile of other cinematic universe attempts.

New MCU secrets shared by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige

The man running Marvel’s movie empire gives clues about the future of the films.

Avengers: Endgame

Yesterday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige visited Reddit to answer some questions from fans. His responses give us a closer look at the creative process of the films and where the superhero blockbusters might go from here. These are the biggest things we learned during that Q&A.

Captain America was always worthy

Remember the scene in “Age of Ultron” when everyone’s trying to lift Thor’s hammer? Steve Rogers manages to make it budge. Feige says he believes Cap was worthy then, but just being polite by not lifting Mjolnir at the time.

Captain America and Thor's Hammer

The moment in Endgame when we all lost it.

Hulk isn’t done evolving

Hulk has been a notoriously problematic character for Marvel. After two actors, it seems they may have cracked the code with Mark Ruffalo. “Many years ago, Mark came in for a meeting with us at Marvel Studios to discuss ways in which the Hulk could grow and evolve in upcoming films. He pitched a lot of cool ideas, some of which led to what you saw in Thor: Ragnarok, Infinity War and Endgame, and some of which would still be cool to see someday.”

Hulk saved more lives than we saw in ‘Endgame’

Many fans calculated that the orignal Thanos snap probably killed far more people than those who got dusted. Imagine the supplemental deaths caused by the disappearance of air traffic controllers, pilots, drivers, and other people responsible for keeping us alive. When Hulk put on the gauntlet and re-snapped people into existence, did those people reappear at random? No, Feige says. “We refer to the version of Hulk in Endgame as Smart Hulk,” Feige wrote. Feige explains that Smart Hulk would take care to ensure that everyone affected by his snap would end up in a safe place. Good Hulk.

Stan Lee never saw ‘Endgame’

Boy, this hurts. The Marvel legend never got to see “Endgame” before he died. Feige explains, “Stan loved to wait to see the final movie at the premiere, so, unfortunately, he did not get to see the finished movie.” Feige did say that Marvel leadership did tell Stan the entire story on the day he showed up to film his cameo. We like to think he smiled when hearing that Captain America would finally tell the Avengers to assemble.

Stan Lee

The Marvel films are planned way in advance

“We usually work with a specific 5 year plan at any given point but often have a general plan that extends much, much further.”

Planning for the Infinity Gauntlet series began after filming of the first Avengers film

“We started discussing how to adapt the Infinity Gauntlet comic soon after the release of the first Avengers. It was on one of our creative retreats about 5 years ago that we decided to do it as two films. We started to crack the specifics of the story during production on Civil War with Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely, Joe and Anthony Russo, in a conference room as we went back and forth between takes.”

The Disney+ shows will work with the MCU

When a franchise begins spinning off into books and comics and digital series and video games, things can get pretty messy. You know this if you read any of the Star Wars books produced between the original trilogy and the prequels. Fans argued about whether those books were canon. Starting with “Episode I” in 1999, many of the books became invalid. By the time “The Force Awakens” debuted, it made virtually all of those books irrelevant to the larger storyline.

Feige reports that the upcoming Disney+ Marvel shows will work “totally and completely” with the MCU.

How did ‘Iron Man’ come together?

It’s easy to forget, but “Iron Man” was not a slam dunk success. Had that film failed, the entire MCU may not exist. There were two unconventional choices that ended up paying off in a big way: Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. So why did they give Favreau the director’s chair? Feige wrote, “Jon Favreau is one of the best storytellers on the planet, and Elf is a stone cold classic.”

As for Tony Stark himself, Feige confirmed that Robert Downey Jr was his biggest casting fight with Disney. It seems crazy now, but you have to remember that at the time, RDJ was seen as radioactive after a string of drug-related legal problems. Had Feige not won that fight, the MCU would have been radically different.

Iron Man

What is Feige’s favorite DC film?

Interestingly, Feige didn’t choose one of the most recent DC films to answer this question. He says his favorite is the 1978 “Superman” with Christopher Reeve. Although the special effects are quite dated, the film features some excellent performances and moments that make the Man of Steel very human. It’s worth a watch if you’ve never seen it!

Sick of the MCU? These movies are a good substitute!

Need a Marvel fix, but want something a little different? These films might be the answer.

Mad Max

As awesome as the MCU can be, they are saturating the summer blockbuster market.

We can’t help but want something fresh from time to time, rather than watching the same flicks over and over again.

Luckily, we have options for you. If you are looking for an awesome flick that combines comedy, action, and fun characters, these won’t let you down!

Best action movie alternatives to the MCU

1. Basically any Quentin Tarantino movie

You can pull almost any Quentin Tarantino movie off the shelf, and it will be one of the best films you’ve ever seen.

From action thrill rides like “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” or “Kill Bill: Vol. 2” to more intriguing stories like “Pulp Fiction,” you just can’t go wrong.

Tarantino also has films that touch on tragic moments in our history. “Inglorious Basterds” deals with both the Holocaust and WWII. “Django Unchained” takes place in an era in U.S. history when slavery was abundant.

Netflix has several Tarantino films in its library so you can start watching now if you have a subscription.

8

If you’ve never seen a Tarantino film, we would recommend starting with one of his first major films, “Reservoir Dogs.” It’s a movie about a diamond heist gone horribly wrong.  Think “Ocean’s 8” but with a graphic torture scene. After that one, you can move onto his later films like “The Hateful Eight.”

Netflix recently released an extended cut of “The Hateful Eight” separated into four hour-long episodes.

With Tarantino, you can expect a lot of gore, occasional drug use, and lots of swearing, so the kiddos should sit this one out. However, for a more mature audience, this guy might become your favorite director.

2. The Jumanji movies

Not a lot of people thought that the Jumanji sequel, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was going to be any good. However, the fun action mixed in with comedy from The Rock, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart made it a lot of fun.

We could also watch Karen Gillan kick butt any day.

The original “Jumanji” with Robin Williams is a classic that still holds up today.

If you’re looking for a good double feature on a rainy summer day, this proves to be a fun ride.

3. Godzilla and King Kong

For the average viewer, a subbed or dubbed Godzilla film from Japan might be a bit too much. Also, the original Godzilla film from the 1950s and the original King Kong from the 1930s might not capture your kids’ attention.

However, in the last few years, there has been a new American made Godzilla film and a King Kong film, and both are good. Also, with a new Godzilla movie on the horizon, it might be a good time to jump into the franchise.

“Kong: Skull Island” came out in 2017. It features three actors we know and love from the MCU: Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, and Brie Larson. The three find themselves on Kong’s home, Skull Island, where giant monsters run rampant and threaten their lives. The giant ape Kong reigns as king of the island, which they try to escape.

“Godzilla” is a 2014 film where the king of the monsters is out to save the world from an infestation of new monsters called the MUTO. It doesn’t have the same social dilemmas of the original film, but it does have solid action and great performances from both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

4. The Mission: Impossible films

Here’s the thing, not every Mission: Impossible movie is good. However, the newest addition, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” is a lot of fun.

The best part about the series is that you don’t need to see every film to know what is going on. Basically, Tom Cruise and his team are constantly thwarting terrorist organizations from taking over the world.

Where the films go from good to great is in the action and stunts. Cruise demands to perform his own stunts in the movies and seems to up the ante with each addition. Whether you are watching Fallout or the original “Mission: Impossible,” you can’t go wrong.

5. “Mad Max: Fury Road”

Imaging if the coyote-roadrunner cartoons were on steroids.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is about Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy, trying to survive the post-apocalyptic world. Along the way, he is captured by some psychopaths, escapes, and teams up with a badass, one-armed lady named Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron.

From there, the movie is a non-stop chase with the psychopaths trying to hunt them down along the endless dusty roads.

This is a movie where you need to put on deodorant beforehand as the intense action scenes will leave you sweating by the end.

6. The Kingsman movies

“Manners maketh man”

The first Kingsman movie, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is a wild action-comedy with high-paced fights mixed with hilariously crude humor.

Most agree that its successor, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” does not capture the same lighting in a bottle as the original, but it is still a decent sequel.

Both films are about British spies thwarting charismatic bad guys out to take over the world. As fun as the hand-to-hand fighting sequences are, the spy gadgets steal the show.

If you always wanted James Bond to have a bit of an edge, then look no further.

7. Almost any of the Batman movies

The Dark Knight is no stranger to the big screen.

Although we would not recommend the Ben Affleck edition, directors Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan gave us some great Bat-flicks to choose from.

Burton’s “Batman” and “Batman Returns” set the standard for future Batman films to come. For many people, Michael Keaton became their definitive Batman with these two movies.

Nolan did not give us movies that felt like comic books, but he did give us incredible action-filled roller coasters. “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” are some people’s holy trinity of superhero movies.

In these movies, we see Bruce Wayne’s tragic beginnings, him becoming the Dark Knight Gotham deserves, and finally his rise from the ashes of defeat to save the city.

If you want something more kid-friendly, “The Lego Batman Movie” is a lot of fun for people of all ages. Essentially, you can always bet on Batman.

Wrapping up

The MCU is not showing any sign of slowing down.

The movies dominate the box office, and fans always seem to love them. However, it is nice to take a break from the world of Captain America and Iron Man once in a while, and watch some other great heroes save the day.

Top 10 magical staffs in pop culture

From Overwatch to the MCU, these staffs put most other weapons to shame!

Staff fight!
Oh, yeah. There’s gonna be a lot of Gandalf.

Grab your wizard hat, double-edged straight sword, and haversack of rations, because we’re going on an adventure!

If you were like us as a kid, after reading a good fantasy novel or watching a particularly exciting movie, you went outside and played with sticks. You imagined they had the power to shoot flames, summon shields, or turn people into frogs.

Why? Because magical staffs are awesome! Whether they channel a user’s inherent energy, like Gandalf’s staff, or possess wild magic of their own, like Wabbajack, each of these iconic scepters contain the stuff of dreams, nightmares, and more.

So, let’s talk about the…

Top 10 Magical Staffs in Pop Culture

10. Jafar’s staff

Jafar

Ew. Creep.

Before Jafar takes over Agrabah, fights Aladdin, and turns into a wildly powerful genie of darkness, his staff is nothing short of memorable. The moment he dials in on Jasmine’s father, the Sultan, with those jeweled snake eyes and turns a once-proud man into his personal flying monkey, there’s no forgetting his staff!

Seriously. If you saw a costume-less person on Halloween holding a snake scepter, we’re willing to bet you’d think: “Huh, where’s the rest of their Jafar getup?” Trust us, it’s true.

But let’s ask the real questions here: does Jafar use his own magic? Does the staff have power itself? Is he a magician because he found the staff, like Aladdin found the lamp? Is Jafar, at heart, just another street rat dreaming of becoming a prince, who took a wrong turn toward the dark side? Is his mother named Martha?

Food for thought!

All musings aside, we’re pretty excited for the live-action remake of “Aladdin”. See it in theaters May 24!

9. Every Pickaxe from Fortnite

It'sajoke,gosh.

HAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!

We’re totally joking, these don’t count as staffs and (most of them) aren’t magical. Just wanted to make sure you’re paying attention.

The Real 9: Jack Frost’s staff

Jack Frost

Winter is coming…

If you haven’t seen “Rise of the Guardians,” we recommend it!

Jack Frost, the main character, teams up with Earth’s guardians, the Avengers!  Wait, no, he joins holiday heroes like Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny, and Sandman. Together, they battle Pitch, the veritable lord of nightmares.

But forget all that for now. Look at Jack’s staff!

It is shaped like an avant-garde shepherd’s crook and made of either a gnarled branch or a bunch of brown paper towels wrapped around PVC pipe. This staff creates ice and cold when used by Jack Frost. Generally, he just brings winter to Earth, but when children are in danger of Pitch’s nightmare-scape, he’ll essentially become Frozone from “The Incredibles.”

We’re pretty sure Jack Frost’s staff isn’t the source of his true power, because he became a guardian after saving his brother from ice. THEN he gained frost magic, so it was inside him all along! Isn’t that nice?

8. Mercy’s Staff (Caduceus)

Mercy
Source: ZaziNombies Lego Creations

In the picture above, the cosplay staff was made entirely of Legos.

Now, about the staff: anyone who’s played Overwatch knows the importance of healers. No healer is better known than the techno-angelic Mercy, who uses her staff to heal teammates while they fight. We aren’t exaggerating when we say a good medic makes the difference between life and death, victory and defeat.

Wouldn’t it be great if your teammates didn’t also verbally abuse you while playing healer? That would be awesome.

7. Sailor Moon Staffs

Sailor Moon

Ever been to Comicon?

If so, you’ve probably seen the Sailor Moon girls. And if you’ve seen the Sailor Moon girls, you’ve probably seen their awesome staffs!

Each one of the Sailors has their own staff, but Sailor Moon herself wields the Moon Stick. The Moon Stick allows Sailor Moon’s alter ego to transform into Sailor Moon. It also allows her to launch attacks such as the Moon Healing Escalation Attack.

If you haven’t seen “Sailor Moon,” do yourself a favor and check it out on Crunchyroll.

6. Maleficent’s Staff

Maleficent

Quick list: Maleficent’s staff…

  1. Curses Aurora into a deep slumber.
  2. Turns Maleficent into a will-o-the-wisp and then a spinning wheel to complete the requirements of her own curse.
  3. Summon a huge storm, lightning, AND thorns.
  4. Turns Maleficent into a GIANT DRAGON!

Never forget, in the original animated film, this staff performed some of the most exciting and versatile feats of magical power ever to be seen in a Disney movie.

5. Shazam’s Staff

Shavana

The recent release of Shazam contained what we believe to be a seriously underrated staff! Simply by touching it and saying the wizard “Shazam”s name, orphan Billy Batson turns into a superhero!

While the staff doesn’t actually produce ice, control minds, or open portals like you’d expect from something on this list, it’s still awesome. We believe the ability to turn anyone into a super-strong, lightning-powered hero who can fly gives it a firm bid for Number 5, at least.

4. Gandalf the White’s Staff

GandalfTW

Few character introductions hold a candle to that of Gandalf the White. He appears in a flash of glory and uses pure magical energy to swat aside Legolas’s arrow and Gimli’s ax. When the radiance dies down, you see him fully, in new duds holding a beautiful white staff.

It’s his final form: the original convoluted staff became a shiny, pale piece of artistically intertwined branches. When put to its full use, Gandalf can personally ward off an entire flock of Nazgul.

Even when used without magic, it still can knock orcs over the head with ease. This staff does a whole lot, and looks good doing it! It’s equally as awesome in the old EA “Return of the King” game.

3. Loki’s “Sceptre”

LokiSceptre

C’mon, people. It’s Marvel.

The scepter was first seen in “The Avengers,” and came back in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” where it helped create Vision. It also helped give Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver their powers.

The staff shoots blue bolts of energy. It uses the power of the Mind Stone. It can control people with just a touch. The pointy end can skewer agents named Coulson. The blunt end can briefly bonk Captain America in the head before he shouts “not today” and spin-kicks you in your shiny, helmeted head.

Alright, that got silly but you got the point: it’s awesome!

Although you might not be able to wield Thor’s hammer, Loki’s scepter can be just the tool you need to plan your own alien invasion.

2. Wabbajack

Wabbajack

There may never be another game like Skyrim. Our fingers are crossed so hard for Elder Scrolls 6, we can’t even tell you.

In Skyrim, there were many staffs. Dragon priest staffs shot elemental energy, Magelight staffs performed great alteration spells. Conjuration staffs like the Sanguine Rose brought Dremoras from the planes of Oblivion. Yet, despite all of that…

No. Other. Staff. Can. Turn. Someone. Into. A. Sweet Roll.

Wabbajack is the Daedric artifact of Sheogorath, the Daedric prince of madness. When using it on an enemy or an NPC or chicken that looked at you funny, it will have a completely random effect on them.

Maybe it will turn them into a bunny who scampers off in fear. Maybe it will make them explode in a blur of lightning. The Wabbajack essentially throws its target into a lottery where anything can happen to it.

It will forever live on in our hearts as one of the most wildly, delightfully unpredictable weapons in video game history.

1. Gandalf the Grey’s Staff

Gandalf

Let’s get this line out of the way from “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Though frankly, every line that comes out of Gandalf’s mouth sounds a little mystic and exciting, in no small part thanks to the acting prowess of Ian McKellan.

According to the novels,  generally, Gandalf uses it to channel his own magic. In the movie, this can be seen when he illuminates the Mines of Moria and fights the Balrog. In the books, we particularly enjoyed when the fellowship was stuck in a tree and Gandalf pretty much burned the forest down to ensure their escape. That was intense!

Aside from Loki’s sceptre, this can be considered the most popular and widely known staff in pop culture. Gandalf the White’s never captured the universal charm and simplistic beauty of this one, with its white crystal held in the twisted branches.

Conclusion

Eat your heart out, swords.

These staffs go to show that your typical weapon might not be the most effective. Though you shouldn’t bring a knife to a gun fight, bringing a staff to a Nazgul fight might be in your best interest.
