How to survive your first playthrough of Dark Souls: Remastered

Dark Souls honors the age-old tradition of difficult video games. The newest release, Dark Souls: Remastered, holds true to itself with familiar enemies and environments. Don’t let the improved frame rates, graphic textures, and summoning abilities fool you – this game still enjoys thrashing unsuspecting players into oblivion.

If you’re new to the game, welcome!

Whether an old fan coming back for a second taste or a first timer looking to prepare themselves for the challenge, we’ve got a few lessons from Soulsborne veterans that will help smooth your experience.

Prepare to Die

This isn’t just a catchphrase, it’s a tenet inseparable from the game’s core.

On the surface level, Dark Souls’ design is meant to kill in a number of different ways; sneaky corners conceal hidden enemies, boss attacks are often timed to catch those who dodge too soon or too late, and deadly cliffs are generously spread throughout your precarious path. However, in a strange way, these pitfalls are also fair: masterful players have historically completed no-hit, no-death runs, which means that skill and knowledge can overcome any trial within the game.

On a spiritual level, Dark Souls is meant to give you a REAL sense of pride and accomplishment. Dying once, twice, or even 50 times isn’t a sign of failure to a Soulsborne player, it’s a spice that makes victory 100 times more satisfying. Our first attempt to defeat the bosses Ornstein and Smough on a solo playthrough ended after 20 deaths, but was probably the greatest single gaming moment of all time.

Basically, if you’re prepared to die and get back to the fight, you’ll eventually overcome any difficulties. Even Blighttown, we promise.

Speaking of which…

A Quick Note on Blighttown

We suggest running. There aren’t many good items here, and it’s not great for farming souls. Sprint down to the poison swamp, hug the right wall until you find the drain bonfire, and use that as your Forward Operating Base (FOB) to fight Chaos Witch Quelaag.

If you really want to fight your way through, we commend you. Battling through Blighttown’s hellish quagmire automatically awards you with Dark Souls Veteran status.

Choose your Playstyle

Dark Souls doesn’t provide enough levels to become excellent at every classification: you need to choose what to be, then invest in that. Here are a few general categories, along with their pros and cons.

  1. The Two-handed Boss. This is our favorite. Rather than using a shield, the two-handed boss should wield a damage-heavy weapon like the Zweihander (which is available early on) and keep weight down in every other way.
Pros: You deal massive damage, roll quickly, and feel awesome.
Cons: Player vs. player (PvP) is hard because Ultra Greatswords can be parried (knocked away by a shield, during an attack, to create an opening for deadly counterattacks). Also, you’ll take slightly more damage, but armor in Dark Souls doesn’t do much anyway.
  2. The Tank and the Knight, two sides of the same coin. Both use a shield in one hand and a weapon in the other, but tanks wear more armor and heavier shields to increase poise at the cost of speed.
Pros: Shields are a great way to keep safe while learning the mechanics of the game.
Cons: One-handing weapons reduces damage considerably!
  3. The Sorcerer. Grab a catalyst and fire soul weapons! This has been called the game’s “Easy Mode” because sorcerers can stand far away from enemies.
    Pros: Safety and cool-looking spells.
Cons: A much slower playthrough, weakness to quick enemies, difficult PvP, and low damage against enemies with magical defense. Don’t be scared, sorcerers are really great.
  4. The Pyromancer. Like the sorcerer, pyromancers cast magic from a distance. However, the pyromancer’s tool – a pyromancy flame – can be used by almost anyone and weighs nothing. Many users fall in love with this build because the game makes starting out with a few fireballs quite easy, and leads to greater attacks.
    Pros: Damage, fun, and FIRE.
Cons: Numerous levels must be allocated that could be used for endurance, health, and other aspects.
  5. The Thief. Here, everything about speed matters! Keep weight low, carry a fast-moving weapon, and hold the buckler shield. Dodging easily is a pro, but the biggest benefit comes from the ability to avoid parries, parry others, and punish slower attacks. The con is high damage taken.
  6. The Creative. Many players find interesting combinations with surprising results. Want to use a whip or a claw weapon? Cast dark spells exclusively? Go for it, and let us know how it works for you!
  7. The no-no’s. There are two things you should probably stay away from: Clerics and archers. Throwing lightning as a Cleric may sound awesome, but the slow casting and low damage make the build terrible. Archers also do very little damage with arrows and need to constantly buy arrows, since they do not regenerate at bonfires like miracles or sorceries. We’re not saying you can’t try these builds, we just strongly advise against it.

Remember, whatever you choose, have fun with it! Any type of character can be used well in the right hands and the game rewards those who are clever and persistent.

Keep Notes

What locked doors did you see? Where did you find that one pathway? Since Dark Souls has no mini-map, navigation can become difficult. This becomes even more of an issue as the game progresses and new areas open up, forcing the player to backtrack multiple times. Even after fast traveling becomes available, locations still are difficult to find. A journal might be the key to remembering if you’re avoiding walkthroughs.

Friend Up

Having too much trouble with a boss? That’s what the summoning system was created for! It allows you to bring other Dark Souls players – called “Phantoms” – into your world to help. There are a few things to know:

Summon signs will appear as glowing white runes on the ground. Pressing the interact button over one will allow you to summon the player into your world, after about 20 seconds.

A number of restrictions affect summoning sign visibility:

  1. Internet connection. If you’re not playing online, you can’t connect to other players. Also, consoles may require you to have a special account: Xbox Gold or Playstation Live, for example. Joining the online community is well worth the cost, in our opinion.
  2. Humanity. Only a character that is human can summon phantoms, a hollow cannot. Humans become hollow by dying: the icon at the top left of your screen will become dark, and your character will suddenly look like a zombie. To solve this issue, gain humanity by killing enemies or using the “humanity” item. Then, rest at a bonfire and select “Restore Humanity”. Boom.
  3. Character considerations. Your weapon, the item you’re invading with, and your covenant can affect what players are available. This was designed to ensure early players aren’t being invaded by godlike, high-level masters. The system can complicated, but you can get around summon restrictions by password-matching in the settings menu.
  4. Password. If you’re not seeing summon signs, you may still have a password restriction set. Removing this will allow you to see the summon signs of random players once again.

Finally, remember that you can place your own summon sign by getting the White Sign Soapstone from Solaire of Astora, and NPC found on a balcony just after defeating the Taurus demon in Undead Burg.

Good luck and welcome to Dark Souls!

Everyone is here with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

“Everyone is here” in Nintendo’s new edition to the Super Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate! With a massive roster of 68 characters, longtime fans of the series will be excited to see the return of every character ever included in a Super Smash Bros. title. Along with the returning characters, Ultimate will feature three newcomers, Inkling from Splatoon, Daisy from the Mario franchise, and the long-anticipated Ridley from the Metroid series.

While some thought this game was going to be a port of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U with an increased roster, they will be happy to hear that this is not the case. During an interview with USGamer, localization manager Nate Bihldorff confirmed that the game was built from an entirely new engine, and was not an enhanced port of the previous title. While there are similarities between the two games, no assets from the previous title were used in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was built entirely from scratch. This can be seen in some of the character changes, as well as mechanical differences between the titles.

During a separate interview with Famitsu, Nate Bihldorff and Bill Trinen revealed that, unlike the characters, not all stages will be returning in the new Super Smash Bros. game. It’s still unconfirmed which stages will not be coming back, but it’s most likely this information will get revealed as the release date gets closer

Nintendo is also releasing a new Super Smash Bros. Edition Gamecube controller. Along with this controller, Nintendo will be releasing an adapter for the Nintendo Switch. Unlike the adapter for Super Smash Bros. Wii U, the adapter will be compatible with more games than just Super Smash Bros. Thankfully, if you owned an adapter for the Wii U, it’s already compatible with the Switch.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the Super Smash Bros. series, or you’ve only just begun playing, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be an exciting new experience for everyone. Pre-orders are already available, with the release date set for December 7 of this year.

Watch: Mario Kart VR looks INTENSE

For more than 25 years, gamers have been able to race one another in various versions of Mario Kart. But if we add virtual reality to the mix, Mario Kart looks like the most fun humans can possibly have. Check this out.

In addition to the VR headset, gamers sit in a cart that moves around to complete the sensory experience. This video was shot at VR Zone in Osaka, Japan. And we need to book a flight there immediately.

While we’re in Osaka (or Tokyo or Okinawa), we can also sign up for a real-life tour of the city in go-karts as we’re dressed like the Mario crew.

It’s probably frowned upon to whip turtle shells at fellow drivers in the real-life go-karts, you can do it all day long in the VR world. Man, what a time to be alive!

Is this cardboard arcade machine the best thing you can do with a Nintendo Switch?

This cool take on the Nintendo Labo project for Switch is a good idea, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it. If you’re not familiar with Nintendo Labo, it is Nintendo’s latest innovative masterpiece. It combines cardboard kits and the plethora of sensors on the Nintendo Switch console to allow users to create all sorts of cool contraptions that they can use to play different games.

Available kits include musical instruments, fishing rods, motorcycles, and more. There have already been some incredible showcases of just how good Nintendo Labo can be. The idea is to get kits creating and eventually moving on to building their own kits and coding the games to go with them. It doesn’t all have to be about learning though, and this cool third-party cardboard kit, by Nyko, is all about fun.

Image via: Nyko – The coin slot can be used as a piggy bank!

The PixelQuest cardboard arcade kit gives Switch owners the chance to build their very own arcade cabinet. It creates a housing for the Joy-Cons and Switch screen and comes with two little bobble head joysticks to complete the experience. The PixelQuest comes complete with grid outlines on the cardboard so that players can use the provided sheet of stickers to adorn their arcade cabinets with unique pixel art creations. There is even a working coin slot that can be used to save your nickels and dimes.

We love the PixelQuest Arcade Kit by Nyko, and we can’t wait to get our hands on one for the office. For just $20 it looks like an absolute bargain that will provide a couple of fun hours’ worth of construction and then a lifetime’s worth of nostalgia to get into. You can expect to see it in stores this Fall.

This is what happens when you hack The Game Boy Camera

Huawei recently a smartphone that has a 40-megapixel camera. That means photographs taken on it will have a whopping 40,000,000 pixels and will be incredibly clear. Now compare that to Nintendo’s humble Game Boy camera, which rocked a 128 x 128 pixel CMOS sensor. Images taken with the Game Boy Camera come in a mere 39,983,616 pixels short of the pictures taken with the brand new Huawei.

Source: Nintendolife

A lack of pixels does not mean a lack of magic. Nintendo is amazing at inspiring its fans to do amazing things with the products it brings to market. You only have to look at the Brand New Nintendo Labo to see how true this is. A mere 128 x 128 can still spark the imagination, and with that spark, Bastiaan Ekeler started a fire on the god-damned moon. Yes, he used his Game Boy Camera to take pictures of the moon, and they look sick.

To achieve his moon shots and a whole host of other sick shots Ekeler had to hack into his Game Boy Camera and hook it up to a Canon EF lens mount. To find out how he did it click here. His results were so good that he was even able to get a nice bokeh effect, which has now become a must-have feature on the latest flagship smartphone cameras.

New Pokémon game confirmed: Watch the trailer now

Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee will be the next Pokémon games for Nintendo Switch. The games are a mix between a Pokémon Yellow sequel and remake and will hit the shelves on November 16. In more exciting news, the games will also add Pokémon Go dynamics to the action.

Players will capture Pokémon just like they do in Pokémon Go. The Pokémon will appear on the map, and then players will have to fight them catch them using their Poke Ball. To throw the Pokémon ball you simply press a button on the joy-con, give it a shake, or you can use this Christmas’ must-have gift, the Poke Ball Plus.  A cool feature of the Poke Ball Plus is that players can put a Pokémon they’ve captured on the inside the Poke Ball and then take it with them everywhere they go.

Battles in the new games will be against other coaches. They’ll follow the same turn-based dynamics players will be used to, but there is little else known about whether new features will be added before release.

Players will be able to share Pokémon or fight both locally and online. Also, Pokémon can be transferred between Pokémon Go and Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee, but there’ll be a completely new story. Team Rocket will return, and Mewtwo will be back in his cave.

The 151 Blue / Red / Yellow Pokémon will be available in the game along with the Alola variants and an all-new mysterious Pokémon.

As the titles indicate, the Initial Pokémon will be Pikachu or Eevee. You will not be able to evolve them, but you will be able to capture other wild Pikachu or Eevee and evolve them to Raichu or Jolteon / Vaporeon / Flareon. Pikachu or Eevee will accompany you on your adventure on your cap. You’ll also be able to customize them.

Another great new feature of the game is the local cooperative mode. Another player can join the adventure at any time and help you capture Pokémon and fight other coaches.

Pokémon director, and producer, Junichi Masuda is involved in the development of the game. He clarified that Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee are not the games that were announced at E3 of 2017. These games will be more classic deliveries in the style of Sun and Moon and will arrive on the Switch in the second half of 2019.

Goldeneye 007 and other N64 classics could be coming back to your living room

Last year around this time, in the run-up to E3, certain Nintendo patents were doing the rounds on the internet. The patents back then were for the SNES mini-classic. Nintendo officially announced the retro console mere weeks after the patents started showing up everywhere. This is all relevant because now we have new Nintendo patents popping up all over the internet, and this time they’re indicating that an N64 Classic Edition retro console could be on the way.

Image via: Japanese Nintendo

The discovery of these latest Nintendo patents comes from the guys at the Japanese Nintendo fan site.  They found a trademark application in Japan for the N64. There isn’t much more information regarding the N64 on the application, but the timing of the discovery and the historical precedent indicates a new retro Nintendo console could be on the way.

If there is a new Nintendo console on the way, the logical time we’ll get an official announcement will be Nintendo’s live E3 stream. You’ll find all details of the Nintendo event, which will be taking place on June 12, here.

Without any official announcement, we can’t tell you what games will be on the N64 mini, but we can tell you what we’d like to see. Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Super Smash Bros. are all classics in our eyes. If Nintendo releases a mini console with those games included, we’ll be hard-pressed not to get involved and hook one up in the office.

What is Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu / Let’s Go Eevee?: Information, images and rumors about the Nintendo Switch Pokémon game

“The new Pokémon game will be called Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee!” “Nintendo will reveal this Pokémon to Switch next week!” “This is the logo!” “It will be a remake of Pokémon Yellow!” “There will be elements of Pokémon Go!”

The Pokémon community is freaking out over the latest rumors. But where are they coming from? Can you trust any of them? And, by the way, what is really Pokémon Let’s Go? Below, we’ll go over the strongest evidence of this game’s existence and gradually reveal what it is… or at least what it could be.

Registered domains

The strongest evidence came out on May 16, 2018. Fans discovered that web domains for pokemonletsgoeevee.com and pokemonletsgopikachu.com had been registered. The registration took place on May 15, exactly when the rumors exploded.

If you check it out, the owner of the two domain registrations is CSC Corporate Domains, Inc. This same company registered pokemon.com back in the day and also domains for Pokémon Sun and Moon for Nintendo. This is important because it’s not just  some fan-troll registering these domains.

“What a coincidence. On the 15th, people start talking about the new Pokémon game and suddenly Nintendo decides to register domains. Why didn’t they register them before?” you may be thinking.

Something similar happened in 2016, when rumors started popping up about Pokémon Sun and Moon. Nintendo registered the domains and literally revealed the games the next day. It’s possible that the Great N delays registration to avoid raising suspicion and, when evitable leaks happen, they register the domains to prevent some clown from taking them.

Does this mean we’ll see an official announcement about Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee soon? Leaker Emily Rogers posted in the ResetERA forums that the reveal could take place next week but she doesn’t rule out Nintendo making the announcement earlier due to leaks.

The first image of the game

Last month, in April, the Twitter account @pixelpar, another specialist in leaks, posted an image of what the new Pokémon game for Nintendo Switch could be.

At first, nobody believed the image. But now it’s taken on new relevance for two reasons. The first is that the trainer has an Eevee over his head. The second reason is that some fans have realized that this photo shows a recreation of Route 21 from Pokémon  Blue / Red / Yellow.

Since the image was revealed before the rumors that Eevee would be one of the important Pokémon and before the return to Kanto, the evidence is undeniably authentic and shows the game in action. Now, whether it’s an image from the final version of the game or from its early development is another matter.

Clues from Game Freak

Some of the most important clues were in plain sight this whole time, but we didn’t realize it until now.

Junichi Masuda, the director of Game Freak, the developer behind Pokémon, had been suggesting the content of the next game for days. Check out his latest tweets:

And here we’ve got one of the most recent promotional videos:

Is this the official logo?

Another leak has been the alleged logo of the Pikachu version.

Where did this logo come from? One of the sources that has leaked it is Twitter user @pixelpar. Is he trustworthy? See for yourself below.

Pixelpar had been posting a few strange sketches on Twitter.

Pixelpar ended this series of sketches with this video explaining that the truth was hidden in these sketches:

These sketches also reveal that the game will have elements taken or inspired from Pokémon Go. Sadly, we don’t know any other details.

So, this Twitter user deserves our trust when he suddenly revealed this:

That original evidence wasn’t a joke

The first hard evidence of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee was taken as a joke on April Fool’s Day.

Specifically, a mysterious message appeared in the shady 4chan forums. We’ve left this until the end because the rest of the evidence, which came out later, helps verify it.

The message said that the Pokémon game for Switch will be a remake of Pokémon Yellow, with two versions (Pikachu and Eevee), Blue and Red playing a role in the story, and both you and your rival as new trainers. It also said that following Pokémon will return, Hidden Machines will be replaced by Pokéride from Alola, Online mode will have a hub for players, there will be integration with Pokémon Go, capturing Pokémon will work like Go, there will be rewards for linking it with Pokémon Go and there will be a new accessory that can be used with both games.

It seems like a joke, but as you can see, all the evidence (the image of Lapras, the Blue and Red images combined with Pikachu and Eevee…) has ended up being true.

Origins of Pokémon Let’s Go

At the start of 2017, the portal Eurogamer shocked Pokémon fans by revealing that Nintendo would launch a game called Pokémon Stars for Switch. This would be an HD port of Pokémon Sun and Moon. With this port, Nintendo’s plan was that Switch would have one game from each of its three-star franchises in its first year: Mario, Zelda and Pokémon.

But in a Pokémon Direct, Nintendo announced two pseudo-expansions of Pokémon Sun and Moon for Nintendo 3DS: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Where the heck was Stars?

Eurogamer has taken advantage of the excitement of latest rumors to clarify that, according to their sources, Nintendo decided to turn Pokémon Stars, a “simple” port, into something more ambitious: a remake/sequel of Pokémon Yellow.

In theory, since Game Freak already had models of many Pokémon in HD thanks to the Pokémon Stars development, the transition shouldn’t have been too painful. However, it’s possible that Eurogamer has come up with this explanation to try to clean up their bad image after the failed leak.

Now, patience… though you won’t need much

Now we just have to wait for Nintendo to make a move. Luckily, you won’t have to wait long. All the leakers have insisted that the reveal of the new Pokémon game is close. In theory, it could be before the end of the month. Soon enough!

Oh by the way… Pikachu or Eevee? Which one would you choose?

Mario has invaded Google Maps

Source: Nintendo

March 10th is now Mario Day. It might be a stretch, but Mar 10 spells Mario, so March 10th is now Mario Day. To celebrate the fact, or perhaps because soon we’ll be getting a mobile version of Mario Kart, Nintendo and Google partnered up to bring us Mario Time in Google Maps.

Mario Time means that whenever you use Maps for navigation, Mario will be right there with you showing you which way you need to go. Instead of having the normal blue arrow, you’ll have Mario riding his famous red kart. This cool little update will only last for about a week so if you want to ride with Mario make sure you do it soon. You’ll find instructions here.

Oh yeah, you read that right. Mario Kart is coming to mobile. Tell all your friends!

Super Mario marches on

He may be in his thirties, but the bushy be-’stached Italian plumber shows no sign of slowing up or settling down. In fact, he and brother Luigi are more in demand than ever.

The new games keep coming, and moving onto new platforms, with Mario Kart Tour is scheduled to hit smartphones in just over a year.

Meanwhile, the great news for younger fans is that legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing a Super Mario Bros. movie with the same team that brought Despicable Me and Minions to the big screen.

The film doesn’t have a set release date yet, but we do know that it’s being produced by Universal – which should mean a theme-park tie in, too.
