Here’s what Fortnite 2 will look like

Honestly? There are no announcements that a Fortnite 2 is even in development or that it will ever be created at all…

That being said, we like to imagine what a Fortnite 2 could look like! Years down the road, what if Epic Games made the decision to create a sequel or a prequel to Fortnite? What type of game would it be? What would it focus on?

Game series tend to follow a few paths: continuation of the story and game mechanics crossover. We’ll go through each of these and see what a Fortnite 2 might have to offer.

Continuation of the Story

Believe it or not, Fortnite contains a hidden story. This has became more and more obvious over Season 4, which began with meteors crashing into the map, after which the “hop rocks” left at the craters were transported to Snobby Shores and the Villain’s Lair, and recently has continued with the lair firing a rocket towards Tilted Towers and accidentally opening an ever-growing portal over the map.

What does this story mean? Our best theory is the events are a tie-in between Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode and Save the World modes. Basically, the Battle Royale events are leading up to the zombie apocalypse.

In regards to a sequel, this could mean a Fortnite 2 in the vein of Mad Max, which takes places in a desert environment and possibly features a few wandering zombies amongst the Battle Royale landscape. Better yet, there may be a new story mode following a group of humans surviving the apocalypse: something with the run-n-gun excitement of Left 4 Dead with the Fortnite’s signature building shenanigans.

Mechanics Crossover

Sometimes, a sequel carries on the tradition in name and mechanics only.

In this case, we’d naturally expect to see the same Battle Royale style that we’ve come to know and love, along with the build-n-shoot combat from the original. However, this Fortnite 2 could also bring out an entirely new location, a few additional ways to fight, and, most likely, a new apocalypse to overcome.

We love the idea of new locations for Fortnite. Currently, the game features a somewhat hilly and homogenous environment, perfect for the game’s current iteration. However, in a Fortnite 2 there would be great possibility for expansion. Imagine running and building through a desert or a crowded jungle. Or fighting for Victory Royale in a gigantic cave underground or on top of a large, snowy mountain…

Also, there are a number of ways that Fortnite 2 could expand upon the combat. The current game includes a number of interesting items like the hop rocks, but the closest they’ve come to a vehicle was the short-lived jetpacks. The second installation of this game might see the introduction of vehicles and other clever items… space suits, perhaps? Portal guns? Thanks to the tongue-in-cheek way Fortnite currently introduces its updates, anything could be on the table.

Finally, what new apocalypse would Fallout 2 feature? With the rockets and meteors currently heralding the changes between seasons, we’re in the mood for an alien invasion. However, there are other alternatives: a world war? Nuclear fallout? A huge volcanic explosion? A second Ice Age? Time shenanigans? Whatever the case, you can be sure to expect epic battles against a new, interesting backdrop.

But really, a volcanic jungle island would be epic. Cue “Battle of Heroes”, by John Williams, right? (Seriously. Cue it. We’ll wait.)

A Vision

Since Fortnite 2 probably won’t happen, here’s our daydream, combining the best parts of what we’ve already considered:

Fortnite 2 takes place on an island chain being surrounded by encroaching deep-sea lava. This creates the game’s circle, although there are rivulets and streams of lava that must be avoided in other places as well.

By the way, this island is Jurassic World. There are dinosaurs.

Cars are now included, but there are no boats. The only way to get from island to island is by building rafts, which consist of at least one floor panel and a “wall” panel that becomes a sail whenever built on a boat. Falling into the boiling lava water slowly takes away health , so be prepared for epic boat battles, where constructing a strong warship may be the secret to success… especially if the final circle happens to land over a segment of ocean!

Whatever the case, we love Fortnite and are excited to see what new heights the game reaches in the future, whether or not that includes a sequel.

How Super Smash Bros. Ultimate can repair Nintendo’s rocky history with eSports

After revealing the massively anticipated trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at E3, Nintendo streamed an invitational tournament featuring the new game. For the event, Nintendo invited some of the world’s most popular and successful professional Smash players, including C9 Mang0, TSM Zero, and UGS Armada. The event can be watched in its entirety below:

The tournament showcased many of Smash Ultimate’s new characters, mechanics, and stages. Competitors also had the unique opportunity to meet with Smash series creator Masahiro Sakurai to give him their thoughts on the game. Back in 2014, Nintendo put on a similar event before the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS. Both of these events can be seen as attempts by Nintendo to grow a closer relationship to the eSports scene, which they had previously ignored. Newer games that have been released by Nintendo, including Splatoon 2 and ARMS, have been deliberately and earnestly pushed as eSports-worthy titles to varying results.

Nintendo’s fanbase created their own eSports scene

While competitive events surrounding Nintendo’s games have always existed, they really came into their own after the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee in 2001. While the game was easy to learn, dedicated players soon discovered many advanced techniques and playstyles that greatly increased the speed and depth of the game. For years, community organizers hosted bigger and better tournaments, complete with streams, casters, and prize pools. Whereas most competitive games have direct support from their developers, such as Capcom hosting Street Fighter tournaments, for whatever reason Nintendo did not acknowledge this bustling and popular community. In 2013, Smash fans even secured a spot for Melee at EVO, the world’s most popular fighting game tournament, by raising over $94,000 for breast cancer research (EVO’s last spot that year was reserved for the game that received the most charitable donations). However, despite their efforts, Nintendo attempted to shut the Smash portion of the event down. Facing massive fan backlash, especially in light of the charitable donations, Nintendo relented and allowed the event to proceed and be streamed online. Why Nintendo had been so adverse to eSports has never been completely clear, but Masahiro Sakurai has spoken on the matter:

“The philosophy behind them doesn’t go in line with Nintendo’s philosophy in that some of these players are playing for the prize money…it comes to a point where they’re playing the game for the money, and I feel that kind of direction doesn’t coincide with Nintendo’s view of what games should be.”

While this stance seems to be part of Nintendo’s core philosophy and will likely never change, they have certainly warmed up to eSports in recent years. Since the 2013 EVO blunder, they’ve sponsored tournaments for Melee, Smash 4, Splatoon, and more. Their involvement is still minimal compared to most developers, but it’s getting there. Hopefully, with the release of Smash Ultimate, Nintendo can find a balance between embracing the competitive scene without alienating casual players.

What’s New In Fortnite Season 5

The highly anticipated Season 5 has finally arrived in Fortnite: Battle Royale. Epic Games had their work cut out for them, as the story-soaked Season 4 was a fan favorite for its live rocket launch, superhero storyline, and Infinity War crossover. The portals opening in the sky following the rocket launch led many players to speculate that Season 5 would involve time travel and dimensional warping. They were right.  Below, we’ll break down the map changes, new Battle Pass content, and gameplay additions.

Trouble in Paradise

Life is a highway!

Sorry Moisty Mire fans (both of you), the whole bottom right section of the map has dried up and desertified. In its place is a bustling desert area featuring several of new named and unnamed locations. The entire area has a southwestern United States, Route 66 theme to it. The main attraction is Paradise Palms, a resort town that features a tall hotel complete with pool. There are plenty of nearby pitstops too, including a giant go-kart track for the new All Terrain Kart (more on that later), a truck stop, and a bunch of dinosaur statues modeled after the real-life Cabazon Dinosaurs tourist attraction in California.

What better way to wind down from the horrors of war than to hit the links?

Additionally, the farmers at Anarchy Acres apparently decided to take up golf instead, transforming the area into Lazy Links. This high society attraction features a golf course complete with luxurious buildings, tennis courts, and a fleet of All-Terrain Karts.

Fortnite is for the Nords!

Time travel shenanigans have led to an entire Viking settlement popping up on a mountain south of Snobby Shores. This location is mysteriously unnamed, with fans so far dubbing it Viking Village, Norse Nook, or simply Whiterun. It remains to be seen if other anachronistic locations will spring up in the future.

The New Crew

A Viking, a lifeguard, and a time traveler walk into a bar…

Season 5’s new batch of skins certainly fits the time travel theme. Featuring a colorful and diverse new cast of characters, players have gone right to work completing challenges and leveling up their Battle Pass to add them to their collection of skins. Much like Carbide and Omega from Season 4, two of the new skins are customizable with unlockable upgrades. The two new skins that are customizable are Drift (the blonde guy in the center of the picture above) and Ragnarok (the terrifying white-eyed Viking to the left of Drift). Their completed costumes can be viewed below:

Can’t wait to see these badass new skins dabbing

A Whole New Gameplan

The void is calling

Tying into the dimensional theme of Season 5, Epic has added small fractal-like portals called rifts to various locations on the map. When players enter these rifts they are warped to the giant crack in the sky, allowing them to dive and glide to avoid the storm and outrun opponents.

While Tomato Man and Durr Burger will be sorely missed, their legacies live on as golf cart accessories

The brand new All-Terrain Kart allows up to four players to powerslide their way to victory. Players can drift to gain speed boosts a la Mario Kart, and the roof of the kart serves as a jump pad. The karts can be found and taken on test drives at the new go-kart track and at Lazy Links. It was hilarious seeing the stunts that players could pull off with the shopping cart, so we can’t wait to see the Jackass stunts that people come up with for the ATK.

Shoot threes, not other players

An unexpected but welcome addition to the Season 5 Battle Pass, toys allow players to shoot baskets, hit golf balls, and volley a beach ball. If you can avoid being gunned down, try hitting a few baskets at Tilted Towers or shooting a hole in one at Lazy Links!

The one thing the Nintendo Switch needs to be perfect

The Nintendo Switch is undoubtedly one of the most innovative consoles on the market, combining portability, solid performance, and a lineup of excellent games: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2, to name a few. The spunky design – a screen between two detachable controllers on either side, which can be configured in a number of different ways – showed the world just what the Wii U aspired to be. Currently, it has become Nintendo’s best-selling console and just keeps growing in popularity.

In short, the Switch is heckin’ cool! So cool, in fact, we would argue that within the niche market Nintendo has created, it is almost PERFECT. Almost…

Despite its other qualities, the Switch lacks one feature: a good way to connect with other players.

Basics of the issue

Turn on the Nintendo Switch and open a profile. You’ll find three subsections related to friend activity: Friend List, Friend Suggestions, and Add Friend. The Friend List shows your current friends, whether or not they are online, and what game they are currently playing if so. The Friend Suggestions tab allows you to find friends from social media and other Nintendo devices. Finally, Add Friend lets you send and receive friend requests, as well as search for users that you’ve played with recently, who are nearby, or who have chosen a “Friend Code”.

So, what’s the big deal?

After discovering friends, sending requests, and linking your profiles, the Switch doesn’t allow any communication between users.

See a friend online? Go ahead and select their profile. You’re only given three options: make them a Best Friend (which places them at the top of the list), remove them as your friend, or block them. No sending messages, no chatting with a microphone, no way to let them know you’re online. Even if you start playing the same game as your friend and join their team, there’s still no chat allowed.

You’ll just have to find a way to talk in-game…

Welp, that’s one way to get your point across…

Don’t get us wrong, we still love the Switch and believe this problem will be fixed in the near future. In fact, we have two solid theories on what Nintendo may be doing.

What this probably means

Nintendo bears its family-friendly history like a badge. Their consoles and games have often been designed to bring people together both in-game and online. Remember cord-assisted Pokemon trading? The physical movement of the Wii remote? Aspects like encouraged Nintendo users to get out, about, active, and most importantly, connected to others.

The Switch’s current lack of messaging could be intended to avoid caustic communities around their games. For an example of how this looks, check out Splatoon 2. After the tutorial, your game experience begins in a city square populated by other players, idling about, who communicate through small drawings.

Thanks to this system, Nintendo is able to allow community messaging and conversation to happen without anything too hateful or negative invading the positive and kid-friendly atmosphere.

What this Could Mean

On the other hand, Nintendo also plans to create a paid online service – like Xbox Gold or Playstation Live – beginning in September of 2018. Since playing games across the internet currently costs nothing for Switch users, the change from free to paid could very well produce anger. Nintendo may already have messaging software ready, but has planned to provide free user communication tools to smooth out the transition.

If this turns out to be the case, we’re excited for September! Although Nintendo adopting a subscription program disappoints us, it’s a trend that console gamers have become familiar with and makes sense for Nintendo’s business.

User suggestions

Still, Switch users may want to find other ways to send messages to online friends, and we have some ideas for you!

  1. Ask yourself: are your friends already connected elsewhere? As we’ve mentioned, the Switch allows you to meet with people nearby, or from social media. If you’re able to chat in person, on Facebook, or on the phone, use those methods to stay in touch!
  2. What game are you playing? Remember, games like Fortnite have in-house chat programs that will allow your friends to use voice chat. But REMEMBER: you’ll only be able to use this form of communication while playing that game, so it may be best to connect over social media or by phone, as we noted in suggestion 1.
  3. The creative approaches. If you met someone on the Switch in a game that doesn’t allow chat, it may be difficult to send a message. Instead, you could find a way to send a pictogram within the game or ask around online through sites like Reddit. There’s no telling how you may bump into your mystery friend.

We’re excited to see where the Switch goes from here, and hope a solution to this problem will be set in place to make the Switch even better!

Nintendo applies for GameCube trademarks: this is what it could mean

Rumors have been swirling in the Nintendo fanbase ever since it was discovered that Nintendo recently filed multiple trademarks involving the Nintendo GameCube. Fans of the classic system have had their heads spinning, wondering what the trademarks will lead to. Here are a few theories as to what the trademarks mean:

1. Nintendo is developing a GameCube Classic Mini

Hot off the trail of the adorably small but impossible-to-track-down NES and SNES Classic systems, Nintendo could have a Gamecube Classic Mini in the pipeline. The system is home to many classic gamesthat fans would surely jump at the chance to revisit like Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros Melee, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. The rousing success of the NES and SNES Classic Mini systems seem to paint the GameCube Classic Mini as an inevitability, with the recent trademarks possibly telling us that it may release sooner than we thought.

2. The trademarks refer to the Switch GameCube controller adapters

During the Super Smash Bros Ultimate reveal at this year’s E3, series director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that Nintendo was releasing a GameCube controller adapter for the Nintendo Switch. Since literally everybody in the world uses the GameCube controller when they play Smash, fans everywhere rejoiced. However, it would admittedly be slightly disappointing if the only thing to come out of these Gamecube trademarks was a controller adapter. Hopefully, it’s something more!

3. Nintendo is planning on releasing GameCube games on the Virtual Console

While details on Nintendo’s upcoming online service for the Switch have been scarce, they have revealed that subscribers will have access to a library of classic NES games. While this is not technically the Virtual Console, the trademark may suggest that Nintendo is preparing to reintroduce the Virtual Console with the ability to download and play GameCube games. It may sound like a pipe dream at this point, but hopefully, Nintendo is listening to its audience, as requests for GameCube games on the Virtual Console have been circulating for years. Being able to play these classics on the go for the first time ever would be amazing.

Bringing back couch play: 5 amazing indie co-op games

Online gaming is so widespread these days these days that it’s easy to forget that multiplayer gaming used to only be local. Even Halo, which used to be one of the most popular couch multiplayer games in the world, didn’t have split screen in its latest entry. While online gaming is fun and accessible, sometimes you just want to invite some friends over, order a pizza, and play Mario Party until 3 a.m. Here are some newer indie games that reinvigorate that couch co-op spirit.

1. Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime download now

The name of this game is hilariously weird, and the game itself is even weirder. The game has you playing as one of many cute space pilots, scouring the universe, fighting hostile aliens, and rescuing helpless animals. Each player has their own character, and you can run around the giant circular ship to the different sections to control different parts. For example, one person could pilot the ship, while another controls the shields, with another on the turrets.

The game supports up to four players, inevitably, leading to a lot of shouting and mayhem. Despite the cutesy art style, the game is actually quite difficult, as every player needs to micromanage their specific role carefully. Amusingly, the end of every level presents a “love meter” that tells you how well you and your partner were in sync.

The game is available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC/Mac. The trailer can be viewed here:

2. Overcooked

Overcooked is a frantic cooperative action game in which players try desperately to run a restaurant without everything going haywire. The game is basically Diner Dash cranked up to 11, as players must balance working quickly with getting the orders right to pass the level and get a high score. Each order that comes in must be made to specification, and your customers will tolerate no mistakes.

The game is both easier and harder when you get more people. It’s easier in the sense that you have more hands on deck to handle the various kitchen tasks, but it’s harder because you have so many people running around the kitchen, and then you get an order wrong, and the steak caught on fire, and there are no clean dishes left, and you’re only 10 points away from winning the level…etc. etc. Overcooked is hilariously stressful and we recommend this one to anybody who loves screaming at their friends. Overcooked 2 was recently announced, so keep a look out for that, too.

The game is out for Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The trailer can be watched here.

3. Don’t Starve Together

Don't Starve Together download now

This charmingly creepy Burtonesque game tasks players with surviving a bleak and surreal world starting with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Like the title implies, players need to keep their characters fed, but they also need to worry about managing their characters’ sanity and fighting off an all-powerful but unseen Lovecraftian horror named Charlie. Don’t Starve Together combines the survival and roguelike genres to craft a bleak but endearing adventure. Each death is permanent (barring the use of certain items) so players must work together carefully to avoid the infinite number of things waiting to kill them.

The game is available on iOS, Android, Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The trailer can be viewed here.

4. Cuphead

Cuphead is run-and-gunning at its best. The difficulty is hellishly brutal, with the game being only incrementally easier with a friend on your side. Resist the urge to snap your controller in half and you’ll be treated to a gorgeously animated adventure straight out of a 1940’s Max Fleischer cartoon. While the game is incredibly hard, it is never unfair. Enemies telegraph their attacks clearly, and are so unique and well animated that it’s hard to hate them. With that being said, you will likely let out a primal scream when you finally beat that boss that just killed you 500 times in a row.

The game is out for PC and Xbox One. The trailer can be viewed here.

5. Snipperclips

While the other games on this list may be frantic and stressful, Snipperclips is anything but. In this game, players cut each other up into various shapes in order to work together to complete a level. You need to get creative with your snipping, as each level presents a unique problem to solve, such as shooting a ball into a hoop or helping a hamster run across a bridge. The cutesy art style and laid back music make this game feel much more relaxed than other co-op games, and it’s a fine title to wind down and relax with your friends.

The game is available on the Nintendo Switch and the trailer can be viewed here.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now compatible with Nintendo Labo

After launching Nintendo Labo a few weeks ago, the Japanese company has announced the arrival of the first compatible game.

With Nintendo Labo, the Big N has promised to revolutionize our way of playing console games. The only problem (until now) was that the game was slightly limited, as Toy-Cons were not compatible with the rest of Nintendo’s game library.

Fortunately, that situation was short-lived, as the Japanese giant recently gave Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a nice update, making it the first game capable of being played with Toy-Con motorbike handlebars. Just imagine: now you can pretend that you’re actually a race car driver on Rainbow Road. We’re not sure if you’re more of a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 or Zelda person, but it’s worth a try, isn’t it?

To be able to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with Toy-Con handlebars, you’ll still have to get the Nintendo Labo variety kit. If you haven’t already fallen in love with the Big N’s IRL building game, it could indeed be worth it, because thanks to Toy-Con, you can turn the handlebars to take a turn and twist the right handlebar to accelerate.

In short, the sensations claim to be as close as possible to those of a real motorbike (except that this one’s made of cardboard). It’s something to improve your game experience after you discover this great accessory for playing vertical games on the Nintendo Switch.

How to get Game Boy games on your iPhone in less than 10 minutes

Play some old school Game Boy Advance games on your favorite Apple device. It’s easy! Just follow these steps.

Seventeen years ago, Nintendo released the Game Boy Advance in America. The system sold millions of copies and was beloved by players throughout the world for its diverse and eclectic game library. Now, you can enjoy your favorite Game Boy Advance classics on your iPhone using an app called gba4ios. Installing this app is incredibly easy and requires no jailbreaking. This guide works with both iPhones and iPads, and will allow you to play Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy games on your device. The installation process is displayed with pictures below:

First, open your preferred browser on your iPhone and head to this link. You should see a screen like this. iPhone X users should choose the second gba4ios option, while all other users should choose the first. Once you tap an option, a button will pop up saying “Install”. Tap the install button, and gba4ios will download to your home screen like any other app would. However, you must first verify the app to use it. Fortunately, this is easy.

Go to your Settings app and select General. Once inside, open Profiles & Device Management. Inside there should be a profile underneath the Enterprise App header. Open this and the icon for gba4ios should be inside. Select the Trust option. This allows you to actually access and open the gba4ios app. Exit the settings app and open the gba4ios app from your home screen.

Once opened, your app should look something like this (note: We already downloaded a few games, which is why their titles appear). In order to download games, tap the magnifying glass icon in the top right. This will open a web browser within the app. Game Boy game files are called “roms”, so enter the name of the game you want into the search bar followed by rom (ex. “Super Mario Advance rom”). Numerous websites will then pop up. Choose one and download your rom. If done correctly, the title of the game will appear as shown above. Simply tap on the name of the game to play it.

And that’s it! You can now play Game Boy games on your iDevice.

The power of peace: Somebody built a Mario Kart track inside Fortnite!

A guy on Reddit built an epic Mario Kart track inside Fortnite, with his pals, in less than an hour and then raced around it in shopping trolleys.

Fortnite’s new Playground LTM (Limited Time Mode) hasn’t been around for long. First released a few days ago, it offers up to four players a low-pressure environment that isn’t filled with people trying to kill them. Friendly fire options are active, but players will automatically respawn unless the storm kills them so players have the freedom to pretty much do as they wish.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Download Fortnite: Battle Royale
10

Playground matches last an hour, but the storm doesn’t start closing in until after 55 minutes have passed. This gives players quite a bit of time to goof around but still turns the heat up if they want to build anything complicated.

We made Mario Kart in Fortnite from FortNiteBR

Now ordinary people might see this as a chance to explore the map, or maybe build a fort or something silly. Not Reddit user JoshB_C and his friends though. Mere hours after Fortnite had a stable version of Playground LTM online, they posted a video on Reddit showcasing their very own Mario Kart track inside Fortnite. Yep, they built an epic Mario Kart track inside Fortnite, in less than an hour, and then raced around it in shopping trolleys.

This is just the beginning people. Playground LTM hasn’t been around for long at all, and already we’re seeing impressive results. We’re in for a treat over the next few weeks as we get to see what crazy things people can do with an hour in Fortnite when nobody is shooting at them.

The time has come to make love, not war!
