The critics are hating The Mandalorian and Grogu and that could mean the end of Star Wars

Disney has acknowledged that they are having trouble reaching the young audience. Star Wars appeals to the audience over 30 years old, but it seems that it no longer captures the attention of children as it used to. If we add to that the fact that the series are performing much worse than they expected, it seems they have a creative crisis on their hands. Especially considering that it has been seven years since we had a new Star Wars movie, leading to the thought that this very, very distant universe may be in crisis. Especially considering that it has been seven years since we had a new Star Wars movie, leading one to think that this very, very distant universe may be in crisis. Especially because The Mandalorian and Grogu has been openly despised by critics.

A Movie with Little Sense

The Mandalorian is a series that, upon its release, was highly appreciated. Directed by Jon Favreau, it knew how to do everything a science fiction franchise needs today to be relevant. Having a charismatic character, an adorable pet that people want to cuddle, making an intelligent mix of genres, and having a hopeful tone more anchored in adventure than anything else. A winning formula that has systematically worked in recent years, as Project Hail Mary has demonstrated.

In fact, the first two seasons were a great success. Both critics and audiences greatly enjoyed the adventures of the Mandalorian and Grogu, affectionately dubbed Baby Yoda by the public. The problem is that in the third season, things started to go awry. The critics were less than enthusiastic about an erratic season that seemed unclear about where it wanted to go, and the audience responded in a similarly lukewarm manner: the numbers were not terrible, but they were not those of the first two seasons. And the public discourse was not as enthusiastic as in the first two seasons, beginning to show signs of fatigue.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is a conclusion for the series in the form of a movie. With everyone involved in it, it aims to be a big celebration for the fans. But the question is, are there still fans of The Mandalorian to justify it? And above all, does it make sense as a movie?

It seems that the answer, especially for the second part, is no. The critics have slammed the movie, accusing it of being like an extended episode, but worse produced, without really being satisfying in any possible sense. Except for the aspects where there have never been complaints. The Mandalorian is great, Grogu is adorable, and the music is excellent, but the CGI, the action, and the aesthetics do not seem like those of a movie, with a quality far below what one would expect from a high-budget film. Not to mention a production from Disney. Especially from a series that stood out precisely for the care of all these aspects.

A galaxy far, far away that does not excite

That criticism and the audience do not always go hand in hand is not something unknown. But with The Mandalorian and with Star Wars, in general, there tends to be some overlap. Something that is not good news for Disney, even with extremely pessimistic projections from experts.

According to analysts, the movie will make 80 million dollars in its first four days of screening. An excellent figure for any other movie, but disastrous for a Star Wars film: no movie in the franchise has ever made less than 100 million. Some of them have been considered failures because of this. Something that suggests that The Mandalorian and Grogu may be the beginning of something that was already being noticed in the series. People may not be as into Star Wars as they were ten years ago.

The numbers after its premiere, in any case, have been somewhat better than expected. With 12 million dollars on its first day, forecasts have now increased to 90 million. Does this mean that The Mandalorian and Grogu is on its way to being a surprise success? No. It means it could be a smaller failure than expected. But unless it ends up making much larger numbers, it seems that it will spawn a conversation that no one wants to have. That perhaps Disney is exhausting its franchises.

Perhaps the audience is no longer there. They are tired of Star Wars. It has been decades of the same franchise, of cultural supremacy, and not always quality that lives up to the myth. It is possible that it just needs a break or to find the right key. It is impossible to know. Perhaps, yes, Star Wars is exhausted and is no longer as interesting as before. But what seems evident is that The Mandalorian and Grogu are no longer as captivating as in their first two seasons. And Disney must start to consider what they are doing with Star Wars.

The most controversial movie of the year surpasses 600 million dollars

Few controversies have generated more debate this year than Michael, by Antoine Fuqua, but it seems that hasn’t stopped the public from talking. With 611 million dollars at the box office, the film has managed to dethrone Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ as the fourth highest-grossing biopic in film history. Although Gibson’s film was undoubtedly more profitable. With 611 million dollars at the box office, the film has managed to dethrone Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ as the fourth highest-grossing biopic in film history. Although Gibson’s film was undoubtedly more profitable. With a budget of just 30 million, the 610 million it made at the box office is even more impressive in context than the 200 million budget that Michael had.

The King of Pop, also of the Box Office

It is far from achieving higher rankings beyond that. The third place is held by the Chinese film Hi, Mom, by Jia Ling, which grossed just over 840 million, and to reach the second and first places, it would have to surpass Bohemian Rhapsody and Oppenheimer, which earned 910 and 975 million dollars at the box office respectively.

None of this takes away from Michael, who is one of the great phenomena of the year. Well positioned as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year—only behind Pegasus 3, Project Hail Mary, and Super Mario Galaxy: the Movie—it has been a spectacular commercial success. Although not critically. Receiving numerous attacks for the partial and very unaware representation of the artist’s image and legal issues, creating a mythologized image of him.

In any case, it doesn’t seem to matter much to the public and fans. And given Michael’s success, it is to be expected that future biopics of artists will continue to seek to hide their dirty laundry to ensure they offer exactly what, it seems, audiences want today: a triumphant representation of the idols they adore.

Humor: one of its strong points

Sanderson, who is immersed in writing scripts for the movies of Mistborn and the series The Stormlight Archive, stated that the adaptation effectively captures the adventures of the protagonist, Ryland Grace. He particularly highlighted the humorous approach of the character Rocky, noting that the decision to add a comedic component was a success. They really nailed the balance between humor and emotion, Sanderson commented, referring to the directors’ ability to blend various emotional elements with comedy.

Despite his praise, the author also acknowledged that Project Hail Mary is not a perfect movie and has some missteps; however, he emphasized that there could not be a better version of the original novel. A movie that dominates all markets

Success in the Chinese market is particularly notable, given the competitive film environment in the country, where audience preferences can vary considerably. Project Hail Mary, based on the novel by author Andy Weir, seems to have captured the audience’s attention, possibly due to its intriguing narrative and impressive visual effects.

On the other hand, Disney’s animated film Hoppers was also mentioned during this period, although no details were specified about its box office performance. This omission has led to speculation about how it has been received compared to other recent releases in a market where animation tends to attract a wide range of audiences.

The box office context in China is vital not only for Hollywood studios but also for analyzing the potential global revenue in the film industry. The weekend results suggest a continued interest from the audience in science fiction productions, which could encourage other studios to consider similar themes in their future offerings.

As Project Hail Mary continues its run, it will be interesting to see if it can maintain its throne or if Hoppers will receive a more positive response in the days to come.

The highly anticipated movie Project Hail Mary, directed by the acclaimed Phil Lord and Chris Miller, has arrived in theaters. This adaptation of the novel by author Andy Weir, known for his hit The Martian, follows the adventures of Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, an astronaut who must save Earth from an alien microbe that is destroying the sun.

A wink straight from Gosling himself

In a remarkable twist within the plot, the filmmakers incorporated a tribute to the classic film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This idea was proposed by none other than Steven Spielberg, who suggested that Grace, upon meeting her alien companion Rocky —played by James Ortiz—, should sing the famous theme song from the 1977 movie. According to Lord, in an interview on the podcast Happy Sad Confused, Spielberg mentioned: “The alien speaks in songs… You should have [Ryan Gosling] sing the theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Wouldn’t that be funny?” The directors took this comment as a green light to include it in the film.

Project Hail Mary not only presents an intriguing narrative, but also welcomes an endearing character in Rocky, who becomes Grace’s inseparable companion. The plot expands with a comedic and emotional tone, as Grace faces the monumental task of saving not only her planet, but also the life of her new alien friend, who is facing his own crises back home.

With the combination of intergalactic adventure and a nostalgic nod to the classics of science fiction, Project Hail Mary promises to attract both fans of science fiction literature and moviegoers in search of a unique cinematic experience. The film is already available in theaters, and it seems it will not disappoint.

Super Bowl Super Trailer

The plot follows Ryland and Rocky as they investigate the phenomenon of Astrophage, a unicellular organism that is affecting several stars. As the story progresses, the connection between them becomes the emotional core, offering a unique narrative that blends science with interstellar friendship. Andy Weir, the author of the original book, has created a character who, although deeply alien, is endearing and easy to love, something that has been difficult to achieve in contemporary science fiction.

Rocky, an astronaut from 40 Eridani, joins Ryland in his quest to discover why the star Tau Ceti is not affected by Astrophage, adding a dynamic that elevates the plot beyond the typical narrative of solitary astronauts. In the trailer, the relationship between the two characters is emphasized, suggesting that the film may effectively address themes of friendship and collaboration, which are essential to the storyline.

With the promise of a deep emotional connection and a fresh approach to the relationships between aliens and humans, Project Hail Mary is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated science fiction films. Gosling’s portrayal of Ryland and the representation of Rocky could leave a lasting impression on the audience, making this cinematic work a memorable experience.
