Electronic Arts has undergone a significant restructuring, resulting in the layoff of between 300 and 400 employees, including approximately 100 at Respawn Entertainment, the studio responsible for Apex Legends. This decision is part of a strategy to better align teams and resources, in pursuit of sustained long-term growth, according to statements from an EA representative.

A tragedy for the environment and shooter lovers

Respawn has confirmed the cancellation of at least two projects in development, one of which was an extraction game set in the Titanfall universe, internally known as R7. Despite the staff reduction and these cuts, Respawn has assured that its commitment to creating player-focused experiences remains strong. In a message via social media, the studio stated that they will move away from certain projects in early stages and make specific adjustments to the teams of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi.

Apex Legends, while still being a relevant game within EA’s catalog, has shown some signs of decline. During the company’s last quarterly financial call, CEO Andrew Wilson mentioned the possibility of an Apex 2.0, predicting a significant update that would expand the gaming experience. Although this update will not be released until after the next Battlefield game, it is speculated that EA could provide more details soon. The next financial report is scheduled for May 6, which could provide more clarity on the future of the franchise.

Respawn also confirmed that the employees affected by the layoffs will receive significant support, including opportunities to consider new positions within EA. Despite these difficult changes, the studio emphasizes that its primary mission of providing player-first experiences has not changed.

Star Wars fans and strategy video game enthusiasts have reasons to celebrate, as Respawn Entertainment, in collaboration with Bit Reactor, has announced its first official presentation for a new tactical title in the Star Wars universe. This event is scheduled for April 19, 2025, during Star Wars Celebration Japan, a festival dedicated to honoring the legacy of the iconic franchise. During this celebration, there will be screenings, talks, and various activities for the delight of fans.

Two great studios together for Star Wars

Although details about the new title have been scarce so far, the event organizers have promised a “first look” at this strategy experience, which could provide more information about its gameplay features and its setting in the vast Star Wars universe. This collaboration between Respawn, known for its work on the Titanfall series and Apex Legends, and Bit Reactor, made up of former members of Firaxis, suggests that sophisticated gameplay mechanics can be expected in the style of titles like Civilization and XCOM.

The announcement also comes at a time when the Star Wars universe is experiencing a resurgence in terms of new projects. Among them are the highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: KOTOR and the ambitious Star Wars: Eclipse from Quantic Dream. However, not all efforts have been successful; it was recently confirmed that the release of Star Wars: Hunters for Steam has been canceled, indicating that the path is not always easy for the franchise’s developers.

With these events underway, the anticipation for what Respawn and Bit Reactor have in store for fans continues to grow. The event in April 2025 is expected to offer not only a glimpse of the new game, but also a space for Star Wars followers to share their passion for this saga that has left an indelible mark on popular culture.

EA confirms that we have run out of The Mandalorian shooting game

Although it hadn’t been officially announced, everything indicated that there was a game based on The Mandalorian in development, which has now been canceled due to the cuts.

Many players believe that layoffs in the video game industry do not concern them. That it is something that does not affect them. They want to play, forgetting about the people behind making those same games, to disconnect and not have to worry about day-to-day problems. But the world doesn’t work that way. When massive staff cuts are announced, the games also suffer. Some of them not even being announced at all.

EA announced a few hours ago that they are going to carry out a restructuring that will result in the dismissal of 5% of their workforce. This means the dismissal of 670 employees out of the 13,400 employees they reported having last March. This has resulted in the closure of several offices, the closure of Ridgeline Games studio, as well as the cancellation of several games. Some of them unannounced.

According to Laura Miele in a letter to EA teams, Respawn has suffered the cancellation of one of its projects. An action FPS Star Wars game that everything points to being the rumored game of The Mandalorian. An unannounced game, but which insiders in the industry have been talking about for several months.

This is because EA believes that Respawn should focus on those games that “excite our players the most.” That means continuing with the Jedi saga and Respawn’s “own brand library.” Surprisingly, given the sour reception of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the only library that Respawn is allowed to touch is Apex Legends, the popular fusion of hero shooter and battle royale from the studio that is one of the major pillars of the American multinational.

That’s why it is expected that we won’t see any major news from EA in the near future. Having incorporated part of the Ridgeline Games team into DICE, Ripple, and Criterion to continue working on Battlefield, the only certainty is that we can’t expect any risks from EA. Only continuations of what has already been proven successful.

Hence, the implications of these massive layoffs are tragic. Even for those who do not care about the dismissal of 670 people overnight, they must understand that this will also affect the type of games that are made and their quality. Leading us to a dark future for the industry, where we cannot expect much from what these companies do.

The voice actor of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor reveals the future of the franchise

The Star Wars Jedi saga could have something in its future, if the news of its director leaving the studio does not imply anything about it.

Star Wars is an everlasting franchise that never truly ends. There’s always a new trilogy, a new comic, a new video game, and if not that, a sequel. That’s why we should never be surprised when something new related to the Disney universe is announced or leaked. It’s in a perpetual expansion, always delving deeper into the happenings of the Empire, the rebels, and the small group of characters we first met back in ’77.

That’s why it’s not surprising that Cameron Monaghan, the actor who voices Cal Kestis in the Star Wars Jedi games, has confirmed that a third installment is already in the works, or at least in the planning stages. During a panel at the Ocala Comic Con event, Monaghan told the audience that the game is not currently in development, but when the discussions conclude, he hopes they can start and create something truly special.

This shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, not only because Star Wars Jedi: Survivors was a critical and commercial success, but also because similar information has surfaced in recent months. After all, Stig Asmussen, the director of both Star Wars Jedi games, stated in a conversation with IGN that he hoped to create a video game trilogy with Cal Kestis. So, it shouldn’t be too surprising that there are indeed discussions to once again put us in the shoes of this charismatic young Jedi.

The problem here is that there is quite a bit more drama than it initially appears. Asmussen has departed both Respawn and Electronic Arts for reasons that are still unknown. According to the statement released by the companies, this was Asmussen’s own decision, which leaves the future and the form the Star Wars: Jedi franchise will take even more uncertain. However, one thing that seems clear is that, with or without Asmussen, it appears that we will continue to experience Cal Kestis’ personal journey to become a true Jedi knight.
