Magic: The Gathering presents Marvel superheroes in a new collection full of heroes and villains

Magic: The Gathering is in a sweet spot. At least in terms of sales. Magic: The Gathering is in a sweet spot. At least in terms of sales. It seems to be reaching a more general audience, thanks to its collaboration with multiple franchises, and they hope to continue doing so in the near future by collaborating with some of the biggest IPs in the world.

One of these is Marvel. And while Spider-Man wasn’t exactly what we expected, it seems they want to fix that with their new attempt with the franchise: Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes.

Superheroes and supervillains, united

The most striking thing at first is that, unlike the Spider-Man collection, this time we are not limited to a single universe or character from the comics. Here are all the superheroes from the Marvel universe, without exception. As in the case of Spider-Man, very focused on the comics, it seeks to appeal to the audience that has grown up reading comics rather than the much more recent MCU fan audience.

This has allowed this collection to introduce us to some lesser-known characters for anyone who doesn’t have a good knowledge of comics. In addition to others well known to all. From the Fantastic Four to several of the Avengers and the X-Men, here are some of our favorite superheroes. And of course, their rivals. Namor, Thanos, and Doctor Doom join the battle to ensure that no puppet is left headless and that your plans come to fruition. Even if they are not the most noble.

In fact, one of the mechanics of Spider-Man returns in association with this idea: that of heroes and villains. Most of the cards in the set are either heroes or villains, depending on whether they are superheroes or supervillains, and many cards have specific effects depending on which they are. Encouraging the creation of tribal effects by bringing together those of their class to enhance their strengths, avoiding mixing them.

All of this also reinforces one of the weaknesses that existed in the Spider-Man set: the lack of cards and synergies. With many more heroes and villains and ways to support them, there would not only be a way to play the new superhero cards, but also to revisit the cards from the Spider-Man collection and give them a new appreciation in the context of having many more cards to work with.

Products for Everyone

On the other hand, the collection will also feature various card treatments associated with the comics. Whether they are character logo cards, showcasing the characters and their names; panel cards, where there are literally comic book pages on the card; or classic cover cards, there is art for everyone in this collection. Even more so if we add the reprints of mythical Magic cards, now with panel art and classic Marvel covers, adding a new context to both the cards and the images.

In addition, and unlike the Spider-Man collection, Marvel Super Heroes will have four dedicated Commander decks. With one for The Avengers, another for Wakanda, another for The Fantastic Four, and one dedicated to Doctor Doom, they have taken special care to ensure there is a product for everyone. This is especially evident in the special Bundles and the Beginner’s Box, a product with ten half-decks to learn how to play the game with all Marvel superhero cards.

With this collection, Wizards of the Coast seems to want to enhance their synergies with Marvel. Whether it will work remains to be seen, but it seems they have learned the lesson regarding the issues they encountered with Spider-Man. So get ready, gather your Avengers, and on June 26th you will be able to enjoy Marvel superheroes in Magic: The Gathering.

Hasbro cancels the largest Dungeons & Dragons video game to date

Dungeons & Dragons is a franchise with decades behind it. Today being synonymous with role-playing games, few franchises have more prestige and renown associated with them. Dungeons & Dragons is a franchise with decades behind it. Today, being synonymous with role-playing games, few franchises have more prestige and renown associated with them. That is why it is not surprising that Hasbro and its subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast, want to exploit it by focusing on its potential for video games. But it seems that their biggest bet to date will not see the light of day. According to information from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, the game has been canceled.

A tremendously ambitious game

Without a public name, we already had quite a bit of information about what the game was going to be. An AAA action game for a single player developed by Unreal Engine 5 by a newly created studio under the umbrella of Hasbro called Giant Skull, led by Stig Asmussen, director of God of War 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order. Something they aimed to compete not only against the classic Dungeons & Dragons games, which have always had a medium budget, but to venture into high-budget games. Looking to go head-to-head against titans like EA or Square Enix.

Now the game has been canceled, according to statements from the company itself to Bloomberg. “We have decided not to move forward with an early concept of Giant Skull, but we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team, and we value our relationship,” a representative from Hasbro stated.

In any case, this is not the only recent editorial move by Hasbro. A closure of the internal studio Atomic Arcade also occurred in parallel, which was working on a Snake Eyes game, a character from the popular G.I. Joe toy franchise. Although it is not officially canceled, the game does not seem likely to see the light of day. And while they claim to still be interested in publishing video games, with their anticipated Warlock on the horizon, these cancellations raise suspicions that something is going wrong at Hasbro.

The CEO of Hasbro wants you to start thinking of Dungeons & Dragons as a game as a service

Chris Cook, CEO of Hasbro, has revealed the new policy for Dungeons & Dragons in a recent interview with GamesRadar. Stating that the future of the game lies in resembling video games and their business model more closely, he asserted that players must come to terms with the fact that “Dungeons & Dragons is a game as a service” and that this will be the policy they will follow from now on with the game. The CEO of Hasbro wants you to start thinking of Dungeons & Dragons as a game as a service

Chris Cook, CEO of Hasbro, has revealed what the new policy for Dungeons & Dragons is in a recent interview with GamesRadar. Stating that the future of the game lies in resembling video games and their business model, he has asserted that players must come to terms with the fact that “Dungeons & Dragons is a game as a service” and that this will be the policy they will follow from now on with the game.

A man with a business model in mind

While Cook does not clarify in the interview what he exactly means by thinking of Dungeons & Dragons as a game as a service, it seems he is referring exactly to this. Instead of having to wait for the release of the books, we can receive small periodic updates that keep us engaged and consuming constantly without having to wait a year and a half or two years until the book is ready. Thus articulating the game both in large seasonal events and smaller, more constant updates.

Something that fits perfectly with the two new initiatives from Wizards of the Coast, the developer of Dungeons & Dragons. On one hand, a seasonal release model focused on a particular event. On the other hand, weekly drops of new rules, different items, or digital cosmetics for your D&D Beyond account.

This aligns perfectly with both Cook’s policies and the decisions they have made for the near future of the game. When Cook took office, the first thing he did was declare his ambitions for Dungeons & Dragons to be digitized and to have a greater presence in the digital realm over the physical, emphasizing the need to give greater value to the computer and online game. Something that has only increased over time.

According to Cook, “books will always be an important part of Dungeons & Dragons,” but it seems he wants to change that process. Making books less important. And if that’s the case, and if games as a service like Fortnite and its microtransactions are any example, it is to be feared that he also wants to start charging us for things that until now he hasn’t been charging us for.

Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons, is reviving nostalgia for fans by uploading episodes of the old D&D cartoon from the 80s. This nostalgic project materializes every Friday, where two to three episodes are presented in blocks, and to date, they have released 11 out of a total of 27 episodes. The series was co-produced by Marvel Productions and animated by Toei Animation, aligning it with other classics of the era like Spider-Man and The Transformers.

The return of a legendary series

Despite its retro appeal, the sound and animation quality of the cartoon is considered low, which adds a sense of humor and authenticity to the viewing experience. With iconic voices like Peter Cullen, who brings the villain Venger to life, and Frank Welker, who voices both Tiamat and the unicorn Uni, the show also allows D&D fans to discover references to various creatures from their beloved Monster Manual, such as dragons and frost giants. This mix of pop culture elements and the unique narrative of the episodes contributes to a peculiar entertainment experience, even in somewhat controversial moments, such as when Venger attempts to alter the course of history during World War II.

On the other hand, the phenomenon of Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to capture the attention of players. Recently, there has been in-depth discussion about its gameplay modes, romance options, and endings, which highlights the relevance of the title in the current video game trend. Additionally, it has become a point of discussion in various weekly and monthly newsletters, covering topics from technology to pop culture, satisfying the curiosity of fans and inviting them to join the conversation in the vast universe of D&D and beyond.

The next Magic: The Gathering collection features the most unique protagonists: they love pizza and are from New York

Wizards of the Coast is fully committed to the idea of collaborating with other universes that are not from Magic: The Gathering, whether we like it or not. Out of seven game collections this year, four are of this kind, called Universe Beyond, and we must accept that it is the new normal. Not only because we cannot change it, but also because some of those collections look very fun.

This is the case of the upcoming collection promised to us by Wizards of the Coast. Because after we went to New York at the end of last year to meet Spider-Man, his allies, and his villains, we are now returning to the Big Apple for some very different characters. Because they are turtles, they are ninjas, they are teenagers, they are mutants, and they really like pizza. And they are going to show you that even if it doesn’t seem like it, they fit into Magic: The Gathering just as much as a dragon, a wizard, or a troll.

The Ninja Turtles want to impose themselves in Magic

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collection will give us a glimpse into the entire history of these characters through a selection of cards that aims to showcase both memorable characters and moments that all fans remember, as well as some that only the most hardcore fans will recall. With basic art treatments closer to the latest iterations in the comics and animated series of the characters, there are different artworks for those who have a favorite era. If you like the original Ninja Turtles or the 90s animated series, don’t worry: you’ll find them in this collection. However, we can’t guarantee that they will be as easy to find as the others.

As for the game mechanics, we have several and very varied ones. Only one new mechanic, but beloved and hated mechanics from Magic players are returning. Something that practically guarantees that the collection will be a great success among competitive players. And almost all of them are easy to predict considering the characters’ stories.

One of the mechanics that returns is the artifact affinity. With at least one creature that explicitly has this mechanic, which allows us to pay one less mana for it for each artifact we have, this is one of the major themes of the collection. Artifacts matter. The collection is full of artifacts and cards that place great importance on the number of artifacts you have on the battlefield and their status, making them even more prominent in the games.

Especially because several cards include mutagens. Tokens that, if we pay one mana, allow us to put a +1/+1 counter on any creature at instant speed. A very powerful effect that we should not overlook.

The new mechanic, which is old, is Stealth. Basically an evolution of Ninjutsu, it allows you to pay an alternative cost to play a creature by bouncing a creature that is not being blocked during the attack turn. Why Stealth and not Ninjutsu, if they work the same? Because they do not work exactly the same. Ninjutsu can be applied at any time from when it is declared that the creature is not blocked until the combat ends, while Stealth can only be applied at the moment when blockers have already been declared and the creature has not been blocked. Being a slightly reduced version in power of this old mechanic.

If we add to that the essential Commander decks, which will allow us to take control of the Turtles, Master Splinter, and even the sinister Shredder, the collection is exactly everything that fans of the franchise could dream of. A true celebration of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. One that you will still have to wait for: the collection will be released on March 6th. But, seeing what they have prepared, the wait is sure to be worth it.

Wizards of the Coast has a year full of work ahead. With seven Magic: The Gathering collections in the pipeline, plus whatever they do with Secret Lair, we are going to have a lot to play and collect. This also does not mean that they will dedicate less care or attention to the collections, if the first collection of the year is any indication of what is to come. Because Lorwyn: Eclipsed is among us and we must say that it is an absolute success.

Lorwyn is one of the most beloved planes in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Originally released as the forty-seventh set of the game on October 12, 2007, it quickly became one of the players’ favorite planes. The reason? Besides being the debut of planeswalkers, it would be a particularly unique fantasy plane.

Fantasy as only Magic can do it

Lorwyn is actually not one plane, but two. When it is daytime, it is Lorwyn, and it is an idyllic world where the sun never sets, the temperature is always mild, and the creatures are friendly and never have malice. Inspired by Celtic folklore and mythology, here we find unique creatures such as kithkin, elementals, shapeshifters, or treefolk, but what is absent are humans of any kind. They do not exist in this peaceful plane.

Now, every once in a while, night falls in Lorwyn. Then, the plane becomes Shadowmoor, its complete opposite in every way. Its creatures turn evil and malicious, the night is eternal, the weather is harsh, and everything is deceptive and potentially deadly. In Shadowmoor, there are also elementals, but the fairies, goblins, giants, and elves, here cannibals, make their way and make life difficult for all those who find themselves in the plane when night falls.

This gives Lorwyn a very particular personality that captivated Magic players of its time. Even if, after its initial success, we haven’t returned to the plane in almost twenty years. Until now.

In Shadowmoor, we have returned to this mythical plane with a particularity: Lorwyn and Shadowmoor have merged, and night and day are confused, causing the kind and gentle creatures from one side to encounter the malicious and deceptive creatures from the other side. Something that has led to the recovery of many interesting mechanics that are making their way into the game due to their strength. Even if they have had to reduce the intensity they had in their original form.

The most striking is the return of Evoke, an ability that allows us to play a creature card for a lower cost than normal, but at the cost of sacrificing it as it enters the battlefield. Why would we do that? Because upon entering the battlefield, it will trigger some kind of ability. But the evoke cards from Shadowmoor are unique because they have something that the previous Lorwyn collections did not have: hybrid mana. All these cards can be paid with one of two colors, and depending on the pair of colors with which we pay for them, they will trigger one ability or another associated with those colors. This makes them extremely versatile cards to use.

In addition to that, one of the skills that has almost become a classic in all collections returns: Convoke. Being able to pay the colorless cost of the card with Convoke by tapping untapped creatures, these cards are particularly powerful when we have many creatures on the battlefield, allowing us to make tremendously explosive plays.

In other respects, Shadowmoor offers us everything that Magic: The Gathering always provides. Collector packs, collector boosters, a beautiful bundle that will delight fans of fairy tale stories, and of course, two Commander decks focused on two of the main themes of the set: one of elementals and another of -1/-1 counters. Both are very interesting for those who enjoy the fascinating world of multiplayer gaming.

Lorwyn Eclipsed is now available for all Magic: The Gathering fans, and you would do well to dive in as soon as possible. Not only because everything related to Magic has been selling out quickly lately, but also because the next collection is already peeking over the horizon saying cowabunga…

The next expansion of Magic: The Gathering, titled Shadowed Lorwyn, is generating great anticipation among fans of the card game. The upcoming expansion of Magic: The Gathering, titled Shadowed Lorwyn, is generating great anticipation among fans of the card game. This new expansion marks the return to the dual planes of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor, two fantasy worlds that coexisted in a 300-year cycle where the illuminated realm of Lorwyn alternated with the dark and gloomy Shadowmoor. This time, both worlds will remain together, but crossing from one to the other transforms the characters into different versions of themselves.

A beloved plan for its mix of light and darkness

To illustrate this duality, a short film titled One Light, One Dark has been produced, resembling a Muppet-style musical and featuring characters designed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. In the short film, the characters sing about the differences in their lives depending on which side of the twilight edge they find themselves, shifting from playful situations to quite sinister scenarios. This innovation has sparked speculation about possible collaborations between Magic and the iconic work of Jim Henson.

In terms of gameplay mechanics, Lorwyn Shadowed will introduce a new keyword called Vivid, which will vary its effects depending on the number of different colors the player is using. The concept of Blight will also be included, allowing players to inflict -1/-1 counters on their opponents, reflecting the hostile environment of Shadowmoor. Additionally, the Changeling attribute will return, allowing shapeshifters to benefit from specific bonuses for certain types of creatures.

This expansion is scheduled to launch digitally on Arena on January 20 and physically on January 23, 2026, bringing with it Commander decks and booster packs. With its focus on the rich narratives of its worlds, Lorwyn Eclipsed promises to offer players an exciting and nostalgic experience.

Magic: The Gathering has cards that you don't know exist from your game or your favorite series

Magic: The Gathering, for a few years now, has been carving out a very particular space within collectible card games. Collaborating with all kinds of franchises, it has become increasingly common to find cards from all sorts of franchises, characters, and even artists. This is something that has had both fans and detractors among Magic franchise players, but one thing is certain: it has opened the game to an audience that would not have even considered approaching it before.

Although it may be more evident thanks to collections like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Lord of the Rings, or Final Fantasy, this is not something new. Even if it has happened and continues to happen on a smaller scale. Because at Wizards of the Coast, the parent company of the game, they realized long ago the possibilities of exploiting these collaborations with cards that were printed outside the natural rotation of the game. And for that, they created a direct sales system: Secret Lair:

The most original cards in the world

The premise of Secret Lair is simple: to create small thematic collections where anything goes in a way that would be impossible in the larger collections of the game. Sometimes featuring reprints of existing cards, sometimes being completely new cards, the charm of Secret Lair is that it is impossible to know what they will present on each occasion. Always a generous surprise.

Secret Lair was born in December 2019 with seven drops over seven consecutive days, from the 3rd to the 9th of that month. And in fact, these seven drops already give us a good idea of what to expect from Secret Lair in the future. Two of them, Bitterblossom Dreams and Eldraine Wonderlands, focused on the plane of Eldraine, offering iconic cards and lands with art from this beloved plane by Magic fans. Meanwhile, Seeing Visions and OMG KITTIES! had a clear theme: the former featured cards with scry 2 with new and spectacular art, and the latter, of course, were classic cat cards now especially chubby and adorable.

But if there were some drops that set the tone for Secret Lair, it was the remaining three. Restless In Peace, < explosions sounds > and Kaleidoscope Killers not only had a particular theme each, but also featured a unique artist. Restless In Peace were cards related to the graveyard illustrated by Dan Mumford, an illustrator for Dungeons & Dragons. < explosions sounds > were goblin cards illustrated by Mike Uziel, known for his dynamic style and action figure-like quality. And Kaleidoscope Killers were five-color cards illustrated by Justine Jones, already one of the most legendary figures in Magic: The Gathering.

This opened the door to what could be expected from Secret Lair. Specific themes, specific artists providing their own perspective on that theme, and a way to give a distinctive tone to the collections. Until Universe Beyond arrived.

Universe Beyond includes all the cards that do not belong to the Magic: The Gathering universe, but to any IP that does not belong to Hasbro. And it all started with Secret Lair. The first was The Walking Dead, in 2020, and it was the first time new cards with unique mechanics that did not belong to the Magic universe were introduced. This caused significant conflicts among Magic fans, but it ultimately became a success. Opening the door to what we know today: complete collections dedicated to other universes that are not Magic: The Gathering.

But also to Secret Lair collections that are dedicated to universes that are not from Magic. Among them, the collections of Hatsune Miku, SpongeBob, or currently available, the PlayStation collection featuring several iconic franchises from the Japanese video game manufacturer. Demonstrating that there is something for everyone here.

Because, and this is the key to Secret Lair, all its offers are temporary. The cards are limited and last until they run out. They are released on a specific date, are withdrawn once the next drop arrives, and you have to be alert so they don’t run out before other collectors or players get them if we want them. Collections as sought after as the Junji Ito or Yoji Shinkawa cards flew off the shelves in just minutes, and it is expected to happen again in the future when renowned artists lend their talents to illustrate cards for the game.

But that is the magic of Secret Lair. You don’t need the cards they sell to play Magic, but if you like the IPs from Universe Beyond that they release at any given time, or if you really like a specific artist, you are going to want to have a specific drop. And Wizards knows that. That’s why it’s important to know about Secret Lair. Because that’s where the magic happens.

Wizards of the Coast will not publish their collaboration of Magic: The Gathering with Monster Hunter for the moment

Wizards of the Coast has announced a significant change in its release plans for the new limited card line, Secret Lair x Monster Hunter, initially scheduled for December 1 of this year. The company has decided to postpone the sale until 2026 as a result of the negative reaction from fans following the initial announcement of this collaboration with Capcom.

They want to bring out the best possible version of it

In a recent post on the official Magic: The Gathering blog, WotC admitted that the initial proposal did not meet fan expectations, acknowledging that there were mistakes that needed rectification. Among the main criticisms was the notable absence of Equipment cards, a crucial element in the Monster Hunter universe, as well as a typographical error on the “Kokoto” card. “We have heard and understood that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better,” they stated in the announcement, announcing a complete ‘rework’ of the collection.

The original release was planned to include a total of 19 cards distributed across four separate collections: The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monster I, and The Monster II. However, the criticism regarding the lack of cards related to Equipment and other significant errors led WotC to reevaluate its approach to this collaboration.

2025 has been an active year for the Secret Lair programs from Wizards of the Coast, featuring collaborations with different intellectual properties. Recently, releases have been made in partnership with well-known brands such as PlayStation, Jaws, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and The Office, generating excitement among the gaming community. With the current buzz surrounding Secret Lair x Monster Hunter, it remains to be seen how this will affect future collaborations and the overall perception of WotC’s releases.
