The origins of ‘Death Stranding’, in a restaurant and without any kind of script

Ahora hemos descubierto que tampoco es así para los actores que interpretan a los personajes. Es el caso de Norman Reedus, al que conoceréis por ‘Death Stranding’ y que aceptó el proyecto sin leer una línea del guion.

You may think that the world of video games is an unusual place, filled with glamour, where decisions are made in glass offices following incredible presentations. However, it’s not always like that. For programmers, certainly, it usually isn’t, but now we have discovered that it’s not like that for the actors who play the characters either. This was the case for Norman Reedus, whom you may know from ‘Death Stranding’ and who accepted the project without even reading a line of the script.

Sushi Stranding

Basically… this came to be because there was no script when Hideo Kojima first decided to meet with him at a sushi restaurant and propose that he be the lead character of a project that hadn’t even started. Kojima himself stated on Twitter, “He said yes instantly even though there wasn’t even a script. The following month we scanned him and took screenshots for a trailer.”

The trailer was released at E3 2016, but the game wouldn’t be released until 2019. By that time, the actor was already well known for his role as Daryl Dixon, which he has played in three different series: ‘The Walking Dead’, ‘The Walking Dead: Origins’, and, you guessed it, ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’. But fame certainly didn’t stop him from taking on a risky project with no script, story, or anything similar. But he had passion. Let’s see who can say the same today.

Back then, Kojima remembers, “I was still skinny and below my recommended weight”. Reedus and he became friends, obviously. So much so, he responded to Kojima’s tweet saying “My dude”. Both will come together again in ‘Death Stranding 2’, because after the success of the first one, frankly… who could refuse a sequel?

The full name of Death Stranding 2 is revealed and when we will be able to see more of the game

Billbil-kun, the famous leaker, has leaked the name of Death Stranding 2 and when we can expect to see more of the game, and it’s very, very soon.

Death Stranding 2 is one of the most anticipated games for the near future. Without a release date and barely any information, beyond a first trailer, there is a constant expectation of when we will know more about it. And if we are to believe the leaks, it might be much sooner than we expect.

According to the well-known data miner billbil-kun, Death Stranding 2 already has a name. That name would be none other than Death Stranding 2 – On The Beach. This is quite reliable because, in fact, billbil-kun has not failed in any of his reports so far. This person is the one who leaks games from digital platforms before their announcement, with a 100% accuracy rate, as well as other technology-related releases, not necessarily associated with the video game.

In addition, as he has commented, we wouldn’t have to wait long to see the official confirmation of it. According to him, although he can’t give an exact date, he expects this data to be officially confirmed within the next 15 days. Adding that, probably, it would be in an unannounced Sony State of Play.

Death Stranding 2 will be published by Sony for PlayStation 5 and was revealed last December 2022 during the Game Awards, so it would make sense all the information that has been given. So now we just have to wait and see if this is the first time billbil-kun fails in one of his leaks.

Hideo Kojima is tired (and frankly, it’s normal)

They must be feeling really overwhelmed, as they announced on Twitter with a brief “I’ve been feeling too tired and exhausted lately.” It’s quite normal.

If sometimes we are tired of doing our day-to-day tasks, imagine if, in addition, you have to supervise a movie and direct two video games at the same time, and without your head being able to stop with all kinds of ideas. Hideo Kojima, at 60 years old, may pass as a bon vivant (he is, let’s not deceive ourselves), but above all he is a tired person. Very, very tired.

Playing Video Games

Recently, Kojima announced that a movie of Death Stranding was already in progress with A24, and in addition to that, there is also a sequel to the game and ‘O.D’, which he is creating with Jordan Peele. So, he must have his head spinning and he has announced it on Twitter, with a brief “I’m too tired and exhausted lately”. It’s normal.

That hasn’t stopped people in the comments from demanding new missions for ‘Metal Gear Solid 5’, because there are people for everything. However, according to what we see on his account, he continues to enjoy movies like never before, so at least he has time to stop thinking for a while and watch a movie from time to time.

At least he has been getting rid of some projects during this year, like his podcast on Spotify, which ended in March. Something is something. That said, Kojima Productions is working at full speed because ‘Death Stranding’ will be, if all goes well, the first of a good handful of movies based on his games, or so he has promised. At this point, Hideo, really, it’s okay to slow down a bit. We will still love you.

Kojima teams up with a legendary production company for his Death Stranding movie

Kojima partners with a legendary production company for his Death Stranding movie, though we don’t have most of the key facts about it yet

It is not unknown or new that Hideo Kojima has a great interest in cinema. His teenage dream was to be a film director, but it was frustrated both by his personal situation and by the socio-economic situation in Japan. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t had plenty of opportunities to make the leap. He has had them and has not been interested. He likes making video games and wants to continue making them. And when he makes movies, he wants to make them on his own terms.

Death Stranding DOWNLOAD

Now that he is independent, he has stated several times that he wants to do something more than video games. His new project says that it is a new genre that goes beyond what cinema and video games are. And we knew he was making a Death Stranding movie, but not with whom. Until now.

Hideo Kojima is making a Death Stranding movie with production company A24. The bizarre thing about all this is that, before any official announcement, there were more than just clues. The production company showcased new merchandise that was basically a t-shirt with the company logo and viscous strands like those in Death Stranding. This led to a statement from Kojima Productions confirming that there is indeed a partnership between both companies to make the Death Stranding movie.

Until now we knew that the movie was going to be co-produced by Alex Lebovici and Hideo Kojima himself, but we didn’t know anything else about it. With this, it is confirmed that the production company behind the project is A24, known for films like the Oscar-winning Everywhere All at Once, Moonlight. Or the famous horror films by Ari Aster, such as Hereditary or Midsommar.

While we don’t have a confirmed director, screenwriter, or actors, and certainly no release date, it is undeniable that this is a perfect match. A24 aligns well with Hideo Kojima’s ambitions. And although we will probably have to wait years to see the outcome, one thing is for sure, it will generate a lot of buzz.

Dead Space – €41.99

This remake of the 2008 game developed by the sadly defunct EA Redwood Shores is one of the most surprising and chilling horror games of the year. Why? Its use of light and sound takes advantage of next-gen technology to make an already claustrophobic game even more intense. In terms of design, it not only hasn’t aged, but its weaker aspects, specifically the puzzle and exploration elements, have been greatly improved in this remake, which serves as a prime example of how a remake should be done when aiming to stay as faithful as possible to the original. Dead Space, the 2023 version, is the game we remembered in our heads as Dead Space from 2008. An absolute must-play for horror fans.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! – €41.99

Although it originally released in Japan in 2014, we never got to see Like a Dragon: Ishin! in the West because Sega believed that no one outside of Japan would be interested in Japanese culture or samurai stories. An utterly incomprehensible thought for any Westerner. After the success of the seventh installment in the Yakuza franchise and its name change to the Japanese title, Like A Dragon, they decided to bring the game’s remaster to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Gameplay-wise, it may not be as polished as the latest entries in the Yakuza series, but in terms of atmosphere and storytelling, it is an absolute fantasy. It’s a fun and tense game with a narrative full of bewildering twists that will delight fans of Yakuza, fans of samurai stories, and it also serves as a perfect entry point to the beat ’em up aspect of the franchise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II – €38.49

There’s little to say about Call of Duty that hasn’t been said already. Its fans hardly play anything else, while non-fans are unlikely to take interest in a game from the franchise. Sometimes their campaigns are good, other times they are a disaster, but their multiplayer is always excellent. In the case of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, it was one of those instances where the franchise offered us a decent campaign and a particularly polished multiplayer, making it one of the most solid entries in the franchise in recent years. If it has been a while since you played a Call of Duty game and you’re looking for one to invest hours in for the years to come, look no further: this is your Call of Duty.

Let’s not overdo it (Games between 20 and 30 euros).

Cyberpunk – €29.99

Cyberpunk was a disastrous game at its launch, but it has gradually managed to redeem itself in the eyes of players. Let’s not deceive ourselves: it’s still not the marvel we were promised, with gameplay that is not always great and a narrative that sometimes stumbles. Does that mean it’s a bad game? Absolutely not. Cyberpunk is an interesting game, with ups and downs that, if we can overlook, provides us with a classic CD Projekt experience and countless hours of gameplay. Furthermore, with the DLC just around the corner, the game’s universe is only going to expand further.

Forza Horizon 5 – €29.99

Among arcade-style racing games that still maintain a touch of simulation, it’s undeniable that Forza Horizon 5 is the current king. Continuing with its open-world style, reinforcing the idea of navigating the map and trying out different challenges and events created by other players, it is an extensive and practically infinite game where the act of driving is not the least important, but rather driving in a specific way. The most important thing in Forza Horizon 5 is to enjoy the act of driving. Discovering what brings you joy, seeking it out, and never stopping unless you want to. Because that’s what the franchise is all about: having fun.

Death Stranding Director’s Cut – €19.99

Hideo Kojima is one of the great creators in the gaming industry, and for good reason. Aside from creating the Metal Gear Solid series, he has made an indelible mark on the medium with many other games that have pushed the boundaries of what video games can be. Take, for example, Death Stranding. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the main mechanic of the game is walking. And Hideo Kojima manages to make walking fun. It’s a beautiful game, excellently written, and incredibly enjoyable to play.

Chained Echoes – €19.99

If you enjoy classic J-RPGs in the vein of Terranigma, Final Fantasy VI, or Chrono Trigger, and you’re itching for something in that style but don’t want to play something retro, look no further. Chained Echoes is a game heavily inspired by 90s Japanese role-playing games, incorporating many quality-of-life features and a modernized approach to the genre. It offers both a nostalgic experience and holds up perfectly to the standards of 2023.

Have mercy on me (games of 10 euros or less)

Resident Evil 2 – €9.99

Resident Evil is a franchise that has been delivering great games ever since its triumphant return with Resident Evil 7. Thanks to that, we can now enjoy true masterpieces like the Resident Evil 2 remake for just ten euros, which is an absolute steal. Is the game only a couple of hours long, three at most? Yes, for each of the two main playable characters. That doesn’t even include the Mercenaries mode or any of the other additional content. Not to mention the periodic urge to replay it every now and then with the excuse that, hey, it’s actually quite short.

Disco Elysium – The Final Cut – €9.99

Disco Elysium is the best RPG released in the last five years, and this is not even up for debate. Narratively superb, artistically astounding, and musically awe-inspiring, it is a true masterpiece. What’s the synopsis? We play as a detective who has been sent to investigate a murder case in a neglected district forgotten by the government. Waking up with a deadly hangover, we don’t remember our names and we don’t have our gun, badge, or pants with us. Does it sound like a comedy? Well, this game will make you laugh as much as it will make you cry.

Sid Meiers Civilization VI – €5.99

For strategy fans. For those who want to squeeze every ounce of gameplay. For those who want every euro they spend to translate into the maximum amount of gaming hours. Here it is. The ultimate cathedral of lost hours, the “just one more turn” syndrome, the game that makes you start playing at 5 in the afternoon and when you look at the clock again, it’s already 11 at night. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI follows a long lineage of great games, and its sixth installment does not disappoint in hooking us and never letting us go.

Titanfall 2 – €4.49

If you don’t have the budget for Call of Duty or have always felt that it lacks something, like more solid campaigns and better individual games, we have excellent news for you. Titanfall 2 has the best campaign of any shooter that has been released in many years, and it costs just a little more than a breakfast in a big city. With fabulous gunplay, amazing weapons, and incredible mech scenes, Titanfall 2 is a game that probably will never have, but deserves, a third installment.

Vampire Survivors – €3.74

Recommending Vampire Survivors is like recommending slot machines or cocaine. It’s simply not right to do so. Why? Because it’s highly addictive. It’s very straightforward: our character shoots automatically, and we have to move them to destroy enemies that appear in endless waves. But the sound, the lights, the effects—everything is perfect for keeping us in a constant trance-like state. And just when it seems like we’re about to lose ourselves, something pops up on the screen—we’ve gained a power, an attack, something new in this round or on this account. Vampire Survivors is addictive because it’s designed to be that way. Run in the opposite direction. Or dive headfirst.
