Doom will turn 30 very soon and will have a very special anniversary

As shared by John Romero in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the iconic Doom will celebrate its 30th anniversary on December 10th, as the title from id Software was originally released in 1993. For those who might not be aware, although we imagine there aren’t many, Romero is one of the founders of the mentioned company. Even though he hasn’t been a part of it for a long time, he continues to be a key figure in its history and that of the Doom franchise.

Indeed, John Romero’s significant role in the company’s history, now owned by Bethesda, cannot be overlooked, and we must also acknowledge John Carmack. To be precise, on December 10th, both personalities will come together again to celebrate Doom’s 30th anniversary by discussing the iconic title and the franchise in general live on Romero’s own Twitch channel. This event is scheduled to take place next month on the 10th at 9:00 PM (Spanish Peninsula time). Moreover, this won’t be the only event serving as a celebration for id Software’s classic shooter.

John Romero and John Carmack will reunite for the 30th anniversary of Doom

Romero, through the same post on X, has announced that he is preparing the release of a new unofficial episode for Doom, a launch that will coincide with the shooter’s 30th-anniversary celebration. This new chapter, serving as a sort of expansion for the classic game, is titled Sigil II and will be released on December 10th. The first episode of Sigil was released for the original game in 1993 for free, as if it were a fifth chapter. In fact, it ended up being released by Bethesda as a free mod for the title’s ports on consoles and mobile devices.

Sigil II will feature nine levels and two additional ones that will be exclusive to Deathmatch mode at its launch, all entirely free. Additionally, a digital edition is available that includes two digital soundtracks from the Thorr and James Paddock level packs. There is also a physical edition that will be sold on a shotgun shell-shaped USB drive and includes various extras, both digital and physical. It appears that two other physical editions of this project have already sold out.

This means we will not only have an exciting reunion between John Romero and John Carmack, but we will also receive a new episode for the iconic Doom, the game that catapulted them to fame, both individually and for id Software itself, of course. As for the reunion, it will be interesting to see it happen after all the rumors that have circulated over the years about their strained relationship. However, Romero himself has debunked these rumors, stating in his autobiography that they have always been friends and continue to be so.

A lot has been written about our working relationship and our final breakup. The truth is, Carmack and I were friends, and we cared about each other, and we still do. The incredible discipline we had as a team allowed us to create and publish thirty-two games in six years. We changed the world for the better,” stated Romero, who is now developing his own first-person shooter under his studio Romero Games, using Unreal Engine. We don’t know anything else about it at the moment.

Cyberpunk 2077 now has a Doom clone starring Keanu Reeves… and it’s wonderful

Cyberpunk 2077 has improved noticeably with Phantom Liberty and its 2.0 update, for example, giving us a Doom clone

Few cases of redemption have been as spectacular in recent years as that of Cyberpunk 2077. If the 2.0 update already improved it significantly, with its expansion Phantom Liberty, both critics and the public now see it with the eyes CD Projekt wanted from the beginning: as an excellent RPG with FPS elements. The reason is that, at last, they have paid attention to the details. And one of those details is a tribute as beautiful as it is hilarious.

In the 2.0 update of the game, Cyberpunk 2077 included a new arcade machine that allowed you to play a game within the game. Its name is Arasaka Tower 3D. And what is it about? Well, it’s basically a Doom clone, but with Keanu Reeves’ character, Johnny Silverhand, as the protagonist.

This, in addition to being a very cute and amusing tribute, is a nod that solidifies the game’s own narrative. Silverhand is a famous rock musician who caused a stir all over Night City, so it makes sense for him to star in his own video game. But it’s also a nod outside of the video game. After all, Keanu Reeves is a big fan of Doom and iD Software games, so much so that he did the (excellent) soundtrack for the first Quake. This connects a series of charming tributes and nods.

If you want to play Arasaka Tower 3D, it’s quite easy. Besides having the game updated to version 2.0, you’ll need to head to the Badlands region, go south, and look for an abandoned church north of a protein farm. Interestingly, this farm also happens to be a fast travel point, so if you’ve unlocked it, you’ll have an easy time finding the church. Once there, enter the church, and to your right, you’ll find the Arasaka Tower 3D machine.

The game includes five levels, several secret doors, and it doesn’t last more than ten minutes in total, but it’s a fun and charming tribute. So, if you’re a fan of Doom and have returned to Cyberpunk 2077 during its recent resurgence, take the opportunity to venture into the forbidden realms of Arasaka Tower 3D.

The hacker who used his skills to play ‘Doom’ on a printer

A basic hacker could take control and endlessly print test pages, blowing up some of your office supplies budget… or they could go further.

When John Carmack, John Romero, and Dave Taylor created ‘Doom‘ in 1993 for DOS, they probably never imagined that just twenty years later someone would manage to put the code on a printer’s screen and make it playable. At the time, the video went viral, but there was still one question left to answer: Why would someone do something like this? And the answer is an incredible journey through internet security.

Canon is doomed

The protagonist of this story is Michael Jordon (no, he doesn’t play basketball), an online security expert convinced that the Canon Pixma printers, which the company had just released and were permanently connected to the internet, were extremely easy to hack. With that ease, anyone could obtain classified information, unique documents, or launch a virus that would spread throughout the office.

Or, as Jordon did, play ‘Doom’ on a tiny screen. You see, the Pixma has a small screen that allows for basic user interactions, such as checking if it’s functioning correctly, displaying ink levels, and so on. A basic hacker could take control and continuously print test pages, eating up part of your office supply budget—or they could go further.

Indeed, Canon’s firmware updates had a tremendous security flaw. They occasionally happened, even if no one cared, and were sent automatically over the Internet, changing the proxy and DNS settings. Since they didn’t require any password or username, it was eventually possible to hack their basic encryption system and force the printer to download whatever one wanted.

Even if it’s not connected to the Internet, it was terribly easy to get into the system and expose a company’s secrets. Or, as Jordon did, install ‘Doom’. The good part is that, after the video went viral, embarrassed Canon improved the security of their printers. Carmack probably didn’t imagine this either. The future is absolutely terrifying.
