The director of Fallout: New Vegas defends himself against accusations of plagiarism from Fallout 3

Don’t blame him either for not inventing his own system: they only had 18 months to get the game out. It turned out quite well.

It must be annoying to be told over and over again for years that you plagiarized the system of your game from another. Moreover, that you were born as DLC and have the soul of one. Although ‘Fallout: New Vegas’ has a gigantic fan base (and, after the series on Amazon Prime Video, we can say it’s a bit toxic), the truth is that it has always felt a bit like a patchwork of ‘Fallout 3’, although its director says exactly the opposite.

Here, fighting

Josh Sawyer has now said in an interview that his spin-off was not based at all on ‘Fallout 3’ and instead looked to a very different game: the first ‘Fallout’. It may not seem like it, but the truth is that they are played in completely different ways, just look at the combat and the point of view. Don’t blame him for not inventing his own system: they only had 18 months to develop the game. It turned out quite well.

“We took an already made game and made a spin-off without really changing the technology behind it, we focused mainly on the content”. And who can blame them? In a year and a half, there’s not much time for anything else. The good thing is that this gave them the opportunity to focus on the dialogues and the different consequences of your actions… and, in the long run, it has benefited them.

And precisely these dialogues and this system come from the first ‘Fallout’. According to Sawyer, much of the philosophy with which I made New Vegas was from the first game, or how I interpreted it. For me, it was foundational in understanding how role-playing games should be made”.

At its core, this is a lesson about not letting ourselves be defeated by bad circumstances, a classic “if life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. Do you have to make a kind of pseudo-DLC for ‘Fallout 3’ that no one really cares about? Take it to your own territory and do it your way. What’s the worst that can happen, that it becomes a complete success?

Fallout 76 is the game you need if you’re eager for the second season of the series

Fallout 76 is the game you should play if you’ve enjoyed the Fallout series and want to delve into a game that lets you inhabit its post-apocalyptic wasteland.

You have probably seen the Fallout series. If you have, chances are you loved it. It has not only captivated fans of the franchise, but it has also managed to reach the general audience. Even people who don’t usually play video games. Its unique lore, sense of humor, and action-packed moments have made it a success. And for good reasons.

If you want to know more about Fallout and immerse yourself in its narrative, you have several options to start depending on your preferences. But maybe you are one of those people who are not so interested in the story, but rather in the fact of inhabiting the wasteland. Being one of the inhabitants and building your own story. And that Fallout exists.

For anyone who wants to fully immerse themselves in the exploration and colonization of the wasteland, they should play Fallout 76. But why? You may have heard that it’s a game that didn’t do well. That it has many expansions. That it’s not exactly like the other Fallout games. And all of that is true. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s an excellent game that you should experience, especially if you like the idea of playing with other people in a post-apocalyptic universe. That’s why we’re going to break down the reasons why you should play it.

The beginnings of Fallout 76 were a bit rough. Released on November 14, 2018, the game promised to not only be the first multiplayer game in the franchise, but also the closest experience to being a settler in the franchise’s post-apocalyptic world. This was contributed by the fact that, in terms of story, it takes place in 2102. Only twenty-five years after the nuclear war between the United States and China. Something that was true, to a certain extent.

The problem was that the game was, from the start, excessively rough. With a terrible loot system, very serious stability issues, and a complete absence of NPCs, because they intended for players to interact with each other to create the game’s story, the game was a disappointment.

Fortunately, over time it improved. Introducing NPCs, strengthening the overall narrative, server stability, and a better loot and mechanics system, the game managed to overcome a terrible first impression. Having reached 73,368 simultaneous players last week, with around 40,000 simultaneous players at any given time of the day, the game is now more alive than ever.

In addition, the game has been introducing new expansions and content, Wastelanders advances the narrative by one year, introducing us to a new region: Appalachia. In Steel Dawn, the Brotherhood of Steel was introduced for the first time, introducing greater power tensions between groups. Something that would be reinforced in Steel Reign, having to make a dramatic decision regarding the future of the Brotherhood. At the same time, Atlantic City is a new expansion that introduces a new region, the other Las Vegas, with a similar touch to what we could expect from New Vegas.

The greatest virtue of all this is that it’s free. You don’t need to buy anything else other than the base game. Both Apalachia and Atlantic City come with introduction packs with loot and currency, but you don’t need them to get into each expansion. Except to support their developers.

Another positive aspect of the game is its community. With lovely players who have no problem helping newcomers, it is a strong and friendly community that is a pleasure to interact with. In addition, their commitment to the game and role-playing the world of Fallout make Fallout 76 even better than it already is. It is a good reason to get into the game.

If you want to have your own home, interact with other settlers and make a life in the wasteland, maybe even join a faction and fight against others, Fallout 76 is your game. One that we can’t imagine how it could be improved in the near future.

All Fallout games are canon according to the boss of Bethesda

Fallout: New Vegas seems to have been left out of the franchise canon after the Fallout series, although not according to Todd Howard.

We can’t stop saying it: Fallout has been a resounding success. We loved the series, but it has also been loved by critics and the public. So much so that the games in the franchise are having a second life that we can only celebrate. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t some concern among a certain sector of the fandom. Considering the events of the series, how does what happened in the most beloved game of all, Fallout: New Vegas, fit into it?

Allowing ourselves a small spoiler only during this paragraph and never again, in the series Shadow Arenas is blown up. Not only that. It is implied that New Vegas has been completely destroyed. This would make the events of Fallout: New Vegas impossible, suggesting to fans that the series is a retcon of the franchise’s lore. Or worse yet: they have decided to leave out the highest-rated game in the franchise.

Todd Howard, director of Bethesda, has come out to explain through IGN that there is no reason to worry. New Vegas is part of the Fallout canon. According to Howard, the event that doesn’t fit in with the series would occur immediately after New Vegas.

That doesn’t mean it’s not worrisome that an iconic location in the franchise is impossible to visit again. Although considering that Bethesda has never felt a special affection for Fallout: New Vegas, which was made by their subsidiary studio Obsidian, it shouldn’t surprise us either. So while the timeline fits, Howard’s dislike for the city of New Vegas also fits.

The mobile game Fallout receives new content related to the series

Fallout, the Amazon Prime series, is already among us, and to celebrate, Bethesda has included new content related to it in Fallout Shelter.

Fallout, the Amazon series, is already among us. Causing sensation, with the audience delighted with it, it is demonstrating that there is a lot of craving for more of this huge post-apocalyptic franchise. Something that seems to have been understood by Bethesda. Because, taking advantage of the hype with its premiere, they have decided to enhance some of the franchise’s games.

The game that takes the best part is, without a doubt, Fallout Shelter. This mobile game of managing a shelter in the Fallout universe has received an update to add content related to the series. Including new missions, weapons, outfits, and two characters taken from the Amazon Prime series, Lucy and The Ghoul, fans will be able to give a similar touch to their shelters as in the series. Additionally, they can claim a Vault 3 monkey until May 7th.

This is not the only thing Bethesda has done to celebrate the premiere of the series. In addition to offers throughout the franchise, Fallout 76 will be free for a week, and the next-gen update for Fallout 4 has a release date of April 25.

Fallout Shelter is available for iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 are available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The creator of the Fallout series is not trying to please you

The Fallout series is one of the most anticipated of the year, and its creator has stated that he doesn’t aim to please the fans, but rather himself… as he is also a fan.

Something that is quickly learned when working on creating art of any kind is that it is impossible to please everyone. There will always be someone who feels offended, upset, or left out of the discussion. It’s inevitable. Humans are not a hive mind. That’s why works that try to please everyone rarely turn out really well; because they end up making compromises that make it possible to be liked by almost everyone, but loved by almost no one. Including their authors.

Fallout 3 DOWNLOAD

Jonathan Nolan, creator of the Fallout series, the legendary game by Bethesda, has stated exactly at a press event recorded by the English lifestyle magazine T3. Stating that it is impossible to please the fans, he has affirmed that as an artist, what you must do is seek to please yourself; do what you want to do and trust that you will make the best possible version of it. Something that may sound alarming to many people, but it has a twist. He talks about it as a fan of the franchise.

While it doesn’t aim to please the most avid Fallout fans, it also doesn’t intend to deviate from what the franchise is. Something evident when Bethesda had to ask him to change his script due to its similarities with what they wanted to do in Fallout 5. Because when he says he’s a fan, he means it.

According to Nolan’s statements, “for me, it started with Fallout 3, which consumed about a year of my life.” Clarifying that “back then I was a young aspiring writer, and that almost ruined my whole life,” since the game is “ridiculously playable and fun.” Does that mean he has any kind of resentment or reservation about the franchise? Not at all. As he himself has said, Fallout is “a series of games that I absolutely love.”

The Fallout series was announced in July 2020 and we didn’t receive its first trailer until December 2023. It will premiere on Amazon Prime on April 11th, releasing all eight episodes of the first season at once.

Magic: The Gathering becomes post-apocalyptic in its new collaboration with the Fallout universe

Magic: The Gathering goes post-apocalyptic in its new collaboration with the Fallout universe, focusing on Bethesda’s titles.

Wizards of the Coast has found a gold mine in Universe Beyond. The use of their own and third-party licenses to create Magic: The Gathering card collections. And it’s not surprising. Not only because combining two popular IPs usually yields good results, but also because, so far, they have done an extraordinary job recreating what makes those licenses special within the logic of their game. Magic cards are never just a drawing of a third-party license. They are always Magic cards of that particular license.

Magic: The Gathering Arena DOWNLOAD

Although their intention to push further beyond Universe Beyond will not fully materialize until 2025, this expansion will begin to be seen in 2024. Starting with one of the first collections of the year, a collaboration with the Fallout video game franchise.

Focusing specifically on Bethesda’s Fallout, the card collection focuses on characters, landmarks, and iconography from the games ranging from Fallout 3 to Fallout 76. Four critically acclaimed games loved by the public. To do this, Wizards of the Coast will release four preconstructed Commander decks for sale, a format characterized by not being able to have two identical cards in the deck except for basic lands, based on different factions and elements of the Fallout universe.

Hail, Caesar, will encourage us to create many tokens and achieve benefits by sacrificing them in honor of the all-powerful Iron Legion. Mutant Threat will put us in charge of all kinds of mutants, including Super Mutants, and Wise Mothman, who serves as the backbone of the entire deck. Survival Fighters will invite us to follow in the footsteps of humans and ghouls trying to survive in The Wasteland, with the invaluable help of Meatball, the best dog in history. And finally, Science! will make us use science, both lost and known, to conduct experiments and overcome our rivals while accumulating enough energy to achieve our objectives.

The interesting thing about this collection is that it will be interesting for both Magic: The Gathering players and Fallout fans. The cards are full of references to the franchise, its characters, and its symbols, with many cards dedicated to the Pip Boy and even alternative arts in the form of V.A.T.S., only available in the edition packs, for those looking for even more exclusive and spectacular artwork.

All this while Commander players can enjoy the reissue of some classic cards, now more difficult to access, and some essential ones for the format, now with all the post-nuclear flavor of the Fallout saga. An intense source of flavor for any deck.

The collection of Fallout cards demonstrates all the care that Wizards of the Coast puts into Universe Beyond. How they seek to naturally integrate it within the entirety of Magic: The Gathering. Something that both players and those who want to play will appreciate, and also, because of what it implies, those who simply want to collect the cards. Those who will be able to do so very soon: on March 8th.

Obsidian wanted to make a Skyrim: New Vegas, but Bethesda told them no

At Obsidian, they wanted to do for Skyrim what New Vegas meant for Fallout, but Bethesda told them it was better to stay put.

Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a franchise is for someone outside of it to take the reins. Or if not take the reins, at least provide their own perspective on it. When it feels exhausted, or those in charge of it don’t seem to know what to do with it, that new or different perspective can help put it back in its place. Something that should never be underestimated.

Fallout: New Vegas DOWNLOAD

This is something that Obsidian should know well. Fallout 3 was a tremendously successful game, but it didn’t exactly enamor the classic fans of the franchise. Something that Fallout: New Vegas did, a game that Obsidian Entertainment was in charge of. However, they never did something similar again. And thanks to Chris Avellone, an employee of Obsidian, we have known why.

The proposal made by Obsidian, as commented by Avellone himself on his social media, was to create games that filled the gaps between the main installments. Just like Fallout: New Vegas served to bridge the gap between Fallout 3 and 4, the idea was for them to make games for The Elder Scrolls so that there wouldn’t be such a long wait time between their titles, like Call of Duty does. This was necessary since almost six years passed between The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Unfortunately, the proposal didn’t get very far. Bethesda flatly refused, cutting their wings claiming the reception that Fallout: New Vegas had. A commercially less successful game, but one that has ended up being recognized over time as the best modern Fallout in terms of criticism and public.

Although since then at Obsidian they have been able to work on many projects, some of them very unique and close to what would be a Fallout: New Vegas 2, such as The Outer Worlds, they have never gone back in this direction. A real shame because, between The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls VI fifteen years will pass at least. And that’s only if everything goes well in an industry where things almost never go well.

Is Fallout now a card game? Yes and no, we explain

Fallout 5 won’t be coming for a long, long time, but in 2024 we’ll have a way to relieve the monkey business: the Fallout Magic Card Collection

Fallout is a franchise that, at a certain point, seemed destined to disappear from the face of the earth. While today it seems impossible, before Fallout 3, and certainly before Fallout 4, the franchise and the entire genre that went with it did not seem to live the best time to continue forward. Today, however, its future seems assured. That we will have a Fallout 5 is a fact, although we will have to wait a long time before that happens. But in the meantime, we will be able to enjoy its cards.

Fallout 5 DOWNLOAD

Many of you may be confused now, but you shouldn’t be. Everything has an explanation. In this case, that the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Beyond the Multiverse collection, where all the cards Wizards of the Coast makes from third-party licenses are grouped together, is going to get really post-apocalyptic. As it will invite us to visit the Fallout Wasteland.

This collection will be composed of four Commander decks based around four themes represented by four mythical characters of the franchise. Focusing especially on modern Fallout.

What are the available decks? On the one hand, we have the Peleones Survivors deck, with Meatball as its commander, focused on finding resources in your deck to win the game. On the other hand, the Science! deck is based on artifacts and generating a resource class called Energy to beat your opponents thanks to the power of… yes, science! If you are more expeditious, you will be more interested in Hail, Caesar, a deck that seeks to generate resources by attacking opponents and sacrificing their own units. And if your thing is weird, Mutant Threats offers you to play The Wise Mothman and win over your enemies by using radiation counters and putting lots of mutants and radiated objects on the table.

Of course, this is nothing more than the surface of what this Fallout set for Magic: The Gathering has to offer. All of the cards make references to characters or events from the video games, with many nods to Pip Boy and the Nuka Cola, as well as a special, borderless, Vault Boy-style card treatment. Beware though, these will only be available in collector’s packs.

At the moment we have only been able to see a small glimpse of the collection, but you can see all the cards that have been shown to us so far in this gallery. To get the cards in your decks you will have to wait until March 8, when you will be able to visit the Wasteland again, this time anchored to what your mana and steals offer you.

Crossing Realms: Jurassic Park, Final Fantasy, Assassin’s Creed, and Fallout Collide with Magic: The Gathering Cards

Magic: The Gathering has shown during Gen Con its future collaborations, with licenses such as Final Fantasy and Assassin’s Creed.

Over the weekend, Gen Con took place in Indianapolis, considered one of the largest tabletop gaming conventions in the US and, by extension, the world. It’s the venue where major industry innovations are showcased, important awards are presented, and surprising announcements are made. It’s also where significant games make their debut. That’s why Wizards of the Coast always reserves a space to unveil their upcoming offerings for the next year during Gen Con.

Magic: The Gathering Arena DOWNLOAD

In fact, Wizards of the Coast had much more to reveal than just what’s coming for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. By showcasing sets all the way up to 2025, they’ve provided us with far more information than they typically do. However, let’s focus on what has caught the most attention with this development: their collaborations with other licenses.

Jurassic Park

In November, “The Lost Caves of Ixalan” will be released, a collection where we’ll delve into the interior of a hollow world inhabited by a lost civilization, as well as numerous dinosaurs. It’s no wonder they’ve decided to use the Jurassic Park license to add an extra layer of excitement to the mix. These cards will be specially created for the occasion and will appear in both collector and regular booster packs. Moreover, there will be two special Secret Lair drops dedicated to Jurassic Park on a date yet to be determined.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales from Middle-earth, Holiday Edition

The Lord of the Rings will make a return once again in November, this time with new cards featuring fresh mechanics, new scenes, and new treatments. While we don’t know much yet, we do know that one of the scene boxes — which include cards that form a complete illustration when placed together — will be “The Might of Galadriel.” Additionally, one of the new card treatments will adopt a concert poster style, breaking away from the more classic forms of the collection’s initial release.

Fallout

With a release date set for March 2024, one of the most post-apocalyptic collaborations in the history of Magic: The Gathering is on the horizon. The legendary video game franchise, Fallout, is making its way into the realm of Magic with four Commander decks, each representing a faction from the game. This follows a similar approach to what was done with the Warhammer 40K Commander decks. Designed to be played against each other in a multiplayer format, these decks are intended to attract a new audience to Magic through a tangential license that might pique their interest in the product, even if they weren’t sure how to get into it.

Asssassin’s Creed

Arguably, the most surprising collaboration comes with the renowned Ubisoft franchise. Set to release in July 2024, Assassin’s Creed marks the latest known collaboration for the game in the coming year. It’s also the most distinctive one. It will be the first collection presented in what they’ve termed “Beyond Boosters”: booster packs with fewer cards than usual, containing both original cards and reprints of old cards, all legal in the Modern format. This set is designed to offer a journey through the game’s universe, providing a way to experience the world of Assassin’s Creed without creating an entire collection around it.

Final Fantasy

The big one, the collection we were already aware of, is slated for 2025. Similar to “The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth” in its format, meaning we can expect a comprehensive collection with integration into Magic: The Gathering Arena, this set will encompass all the games in the franchise, from the first one to the most recent, Final Fantasy XVI as of the time of writing. This collaboration is poised to rival the popularity of “The Lord of the Rings,” which is already the second best-selling collection in the history of the game.

5 ways Elder Scrolls 6 can improve from Skyrim

Here’s our wish list for a stellar Elder Scrolls VI.

Released in 2011, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was one of the most iconic and popular games of the last console generation. The game rekindled interest in massive, open world AAA RPGs and was considered one of the most immersive and technically impressive games ever released. After receiving countless “game of the year” awards, millions of sales, ports to every modern system, and thousands of mods, Skyrim has cemented its place in gaming history.

Now, nearly 10 years after Skyrim’s release, Bethesda has revealed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development. The game is likely many years from release and the lofty goal of surpassing Skyrim is looming over the developers’ heads. Here are a few ways The Elder Scrolls 6 can improve upon the solid framework laid out by Skyrim.

5 biggest ways Elder Scrolls 6 can improve over Skyrim

5. Have a unique setting

elder scrolls 6 hammerfell

One of the biggest strengths Skyrim had versus other games in the series was its distinct setting. The snowy landscapes of Skyrim and its uniquely Viking architecture helped the game’s setting stand out against the more generic high-fantasy, Tolkien-esque settings of Oblivion and Daggerfall. TES 6 needs to have a similarly distinctive setting.

One of the most highly requested settings is Hammerfell, a desert region that borders Skyrim. The area is home to the Redguards, an adventurous and nomadic race of humans who often work as mercenaries, sailors, and adventurers. Hammerfell itself is made up of massive port cities that contradict the deserts that make up most of the region.

The region also features massive abandoned Dwemer cities; advanced mechanical cities filled with gigantic gears and other machinations. The setting’s architecture is based on real-life ancient Arabian and African aesthetics, which would provide a fresh change of scenery for the series.

To stand out, The Elder Scrolls 6 needs to continue to stray from high fantasy and more towards surreal and unique settings not found in any other fantasy game.

4. A more in-depth combat system

skyrim combat improvements

One of the most consistent complaints of the Elder Scrolls series is its flimsy combat. Fights often feel like simple button mashing, and when attacks connect there is no sense of power or weight. While Skyrim featured the best combat in the series so far, it was still incredibly simple and repetitive.

The combat system needs a complete rehaul in TES 6. First and foremost, keep the real-combat of Skyrim and Oblivion, and do not include Morrowind’s dice rolls. Visibly hitting an enemy with your sword and then rolling a miss was incredibly frustrating and immersion breaking.

Second, increase the number of available moves in combat. Allow for feints, thrusts, and parries, in addition to the normal and power attacks. A well-timed shield or two-handed weapon block should do more than just prevent you from taking damage, it should open an opportunity for you to strike back.

Third, adding more options on how or if to fight can improve the roleplaying experience. Give players an option to knock enemies out or restrain them instead of killing them. Conversely, giving the ability to enact brutal executions on command can help immerse players in their bloodthirsty character.

Beyond this, improved hit detection, more detailed animations, and more gruesome sound design can all help combat from feeling floaty and week. By featuring an advanced combat system, TES 6 can avoid one of the series’ most common complaints.

3. Make guilds make sense

skyrim winterhold

In Skyrim, the way that the player interacted with the game’s various guilds was nonsensical. Not only did every guild make the player the leader too easily, but the player could serve as the leader of every single guild in Skyrim at the same time. It was unrealistic (in the context of a fantasy game) that somebody could serve as the brutal warrior leader of the Companions while also serving as the shadowy leader of the Dark Brotherhood and so on. Forcing the player into only joining one or two guilds (with the ability to only become the leader of one) would help force the player into creating a more distinct story for themselves.

It was also far too easy to advance through the ranks of a guild in Skyrim. To become head of the College of Winterhold (Mage’s Guild), the player technically only needs to know a handful of spells. Instead, the player should have to repeatedly demonstrate their magical aptitude with a wide variety of difficult spells. The fact that any old warrior with basic flame and ice spells could become the leader of the most powerful faction of mages in Skyrim was absurd. Rising through the ranks of a guild should be a matter of aptitude, networking, and shrewd inner politics.

2. Allow players to craft their own spells

oblivion spellcrafting

One of the most missed features in Skyrim was the ability to craft your own spells. The spellcrafting system featured in Oblivion gave the players a ton of freedom to be creative, allowing them to assign various properties to their spells like range, self/touch/on target/, area of effect, buffs and debuffs, and various elements. Depending on the player’s magical abilities, these spells would be weaker or stronger or be easier or more difficult to cast.

Players found plenty of interesting ways to craft spells, such as combining invisibility with the Frenzy effect, which would cause enemies to kill each other while the player remains safely hidden. Bringing back this highly requested feature would go a long way in making longtime fans happy.

1. Use a new engine

elder scrolls 6 needs a new engine

It’s finally time to address the elephant in the room: Bethesda’s Creation Engine, used in Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76, has become outdated. Here are a few ways the Creation Engine limits the game designer’s ability for player interaction with the environment:

  • 3D objects can’t interact well with the environment, which prevents contextual environmental actions like vaulting over a ledge of climbing a ladder.
  • Physics and game speed are tied to FPS, which could cause the game to become unplayable on certain hardware or settings
  • Interiors and exteriors are completely separated by loading screens. Other games like Breath of the Wild and The Witcher 3 have already achieved seamless transitions between interiors and exteriors

For as good as the Creation Engine is in creating a world that interacts with itself (with NPC schedules, Radiant Quests, etc), the engine is in dire need of a retooling or an overhaul. Unfortunately, since the code dates back to the ’90s, a retrofitting may be out of the question, and a new engine is needed entirely.
