Guerrilla Games has restructured its development team, which means that fans of the Horizon Zero Dawn series will have to wait much longer for the next installment. Although we remind you that there is already a Chinese copy available for those who can’t wait.

According to reports, many of the members who were working on Horizon 3 have been moved to a new project titled Horizon Hunters Gathering, announced last week as a “new chapter in the Horizon universe.”

This cooperative action game for three players is designed for PlayStation 5 and PC, although it does not have a release date yet.

A new game in the saga, but it is not anticipated by fans

Arjan Bak, the game director, has stated that Horizon Hunters Gathering will feature “reactive and deeply skill-based” combat, combining the characteristic “tactical precision” of previous Horizon titles with team dynamics.

However, despite its multiplayer aspect, the director has added that the game will include a narrative campaign that will be “completely canonical” in the series and will receive post-launch updates, thus ensuring a continuous development of the story.

Before the announcement, there had been speculation that Guerrilla Games was working on a new installment of Horizon, but the shift in focus suggests that Horizon Hunters Gathering is not just a side project.

According to Kotaku, several sources close to the project have stated that much of the studio is now focused on this title, which limits progress towards Horizon 3, which could take “three to five years” to hit the market, potentially positioning it as a launch title for PlayStation 6, although there is also the possibility that it will be a release that comes to PS5 as well.

This development has generated a mixed response among fans, who are excited about the new direction of the series, but also disappointed by the long wait to see Aloy in action again.

Tales of Berseria will be the new remaster from Bandai Namco

Bandai Namco has revealed that Tales of Berseria, a title released in 2016, will receive a remaster for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Bandai Namco has revealed that Tales of Berseria, a title released in 2016, will receive a remaster for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch. This decision has generated some confusion among fans of the series, given that there are several older titles that could benefit from this treatment. The remastering of recent works is not something unprecedented, especially in a context where titles like Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us Part 1 have undergone similar revisions.

Not the Tales of that their fans were expecting

However, the inclusion of Berseria in the Tales Remaster project feels out of place, considering that it is already available on PS5 and PC through their respective platforms. Additionally, the remastered version will not be compatible with the new Switch 2 console due to “game progression issues,” leaving Xbox as the only new platform on which the title will be available.

The reactions on social media reflect the confusion and discontent among many users, who argue that older titles in the franchise, such as Tales of Abyss or Tales of Destiny, deserve this kind of attention. “I feel like I just finished the game,” commented Erik Mabry, QA manager at Zenimax Media, while other users expressed their frustration over the lack of remasterings of other iconic titles in the series.

Despite these doubts, Bandai Namco has stated that the remaster of Tales of Berseria will include new gameplay mechanics and quality of life features. This release is scheduled for February 27, and although it has generated debate, it also promises to offer players a renewed experience of a story cherished by fans.

Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent, accusing the Chinese tech giant of copying elements from its acclaimed game Horizon Zero Dawn in its new project, Light of Motiram. The lawsuit has labeled Tencent’s title as a “servile clone,” which has prompted a swift response from the defendant company.

Tencent, more expensive than its back

In its defense, Tencent argues that Sony has sued the wrong parties and points out that the lawsuit is deficient. The Asian giant claims that Sony has not demonstrated that the court has personal jurisdiction over Tencent Holdings, stating that the alleged acts of infringement did not occur as claimed and that most of the intellectual property elements are not adequately presented in the lawsuit.

Tencent also rejects Sony’s trademark infringement claims, stating that fame does not automatically grant trademark rights. In its 21-page response, Tencent argues that Sony has not presented specific facts to support its claims and that the main case, related to the development of an allegedly infringing game, is not ripe for judgment.

The game Light of Motiram, described as an open-world survival title, has drawn attention for its similarities to Horizon Zero Dawn, particularly in its main character, which has led to comparisons between the two. Although the developer and Tencent subsidiary, Polaris Quest, removed references to elements that could evoke Horizon Zero Dawn from its Steam page, this has not been enough to mitigate Sony’s accusations.

The legal battle between both companies is far from over, and a new response from Sony is expected in the coming days, suggesting that this dispute over intellectual property in the video game industry will continue to develop.

The investment in the development of Horizon Forbidden West has revealed surprising figures, exceeding 200 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive projects in the history of video games. This information came to light amid a lawsuit between Sony and Tencent, where allegations of plagiarism related to Horizon Zero Dawn forced PlayStation to present internal documents highlighting the investment made in the game’s design.

An absolutely exuberant game

The art director of Guerrilla Games, Jan-Bart van Beek, detailed that each of the tribes inhabiting the vast world of Horizon Forbidden West was conceived through a rigorous process of research and design. Each tribe had style guides that varied between 60 and 200 pages, covering everything from physical characteristics to clothing and architecture. These efforts included collaborations with anthropologists to ensure that the aesthetics of each group authentically reflected their biome and cultural identity.

Van Beek offered the Nora tribe as an example, whose clothing is made from materials such as skins, leather, and linen, adorned with embroidery and decorations that highlight their culture. This meticulous attention to detail has not only contributed to the artistic and narrative quality of the game but also explains the exorbitant costs associated with its development.

At a time when the business model of AAA video games is on shaky ground, the enormous investment made in Horizon Forbidden West reminds us of the complexity and risk involved in creating interactive open worlds. This context raises questions about the viability of the current model in an ever-evolving industry.

Sony strikes back against Tencent for the game that they claim blatantly plagiarizes one of its most famous IPs

The legal dispute between Sony and Tencent over the video game Light of Motiram, considered a clone of Horizon Zero Dawn, continues to intensify. The legal dispute between Sony and Tencent over the video game Light of Motiram, considered a clone of Horizon Zero Dawn, continues to intensify. Earlier this year, Sony filed a lawsuit against the Chinese conglomerate, claiming that the development of Light of Motiram was based on a failed proposal to adapt Horizon for the mobile market. The Japanese company argues that the new title features artistic and character similarities with its successful video game, particularly with its protagonist, Aloy.

A game too similar to Horizon

In its most recent legal response, which The Game Post has accessed, Sony accuses Tencent of damaging the Horizon brand and jeopardizing its commercial future. The company states that the defense presented by Tencent is “absurd” and points out that there is already confusion among consumers due to the marketing and similar appearance of both games. According to Sony, the use of similar characters and visual elements in Light of Motiram creates a false association between the two franchises, which could harm its reputation and success.

Tencet, for its part, defends its project arguing that Horizon is not an original concept and that its development is in a preliminary phase. They claim that rushing plagiarism accusations is exaggerated, pointing out that many video games share common elements. However, Sony has emphasized that the “damage is already done,” especially after the release date of Light of Motiram was moved to 2027 following the lawsuit.

As both companies dig in their heels in their respective positions, the legal battle seems far from resolved. This confrontation could not only have significant consequences for the two companies, but it could also set a precedent regarding the limits of inspiration and intellectual property in the video game industry, marking a critical point in how similarities between titles are managed in an increasingly competitive market.

During the live broadcast for the tenth anniversary of Kojima Productions, Hideo Kojima presented a new poster for his upcoming PlayStation exclusive game titled Physint. This title will mark a return to the roots of the “tactical espionage action” gameplay style that popularized the iconic Metal Gear Solid series, in contrast to his previous work, Death Stranding.

Physint has had to face some notable problems

At the event, Kojima mentioned that the casting process for the main character was affected by the SAG-AFTRA strikes, although he confirmed that actors Don Lee, known for his role in Train to Busan, Charlee Fraser, noted for her performance in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Minami Hamabe, who participated in Godzilla Minus One, will be part of the cast.

Physint will use an advanced version of the Decima engine, a technology that also supported notable works such as Horizon Zero Dawn and Death Stranding. Although an immediate release is not expected, the game is anticipated to arrive within six years, making it an even more distant project than OD, which also does not have a confirmed release date.

Kojima emphasized that Physint will be “both a game and a movie at the same time,” suggesting that the gaming experience could be so cinematic that it might be confused with a film for those who witness it. “I’m not sure how far we can take it yet,” added the Japanese creative.

The broadcast was filled with announcements, including an anime based on Death Stranding and a sake from Kojima Productions, leaving fans excited about the future of the company and its innovative proposals in the world of entertainment.

Tencent says that if their new game is a plagiarism of Horizon Zero Dawn, Sony should take a look at what they have done with Breath of the Wild and Far Cry

Sony has filed a lawsuit against Tencent over the game Light of Motiram, claiming that the title is a copy of its acclaimed franchise Horizon Zero Dawn. The legal dispute, which originated after the game’s announcement, has escalated in intensity since July, when Sony formalized its complaint in a California court. The Japanese company argues that there are undeniable similarities between the two games, highlighting the red-haired protagonist, robotic fauna, and the post-apocalyptic open-world settings.

There is nothing original in the world

Tencent, for its part, has vehemently responded to the accusations, arguing that there is no jurisdiction and that the lawsuit lacks substantial evidence, given that Light of Motiram will not be released until 2027. In its defense, the company argues that Sony seeks to establish a monopoly over common elements in popular culture, such as the archetype of the red-haired hero and ruined civilizations, and not simply to protect its copyright.

In the context of this dispute, Tencent has pointed out that the elements mentioned by Sony are present in numerous video games before and after Horizon Zero Dawn, citing titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Far Cry: Primal. Additionally, the company argues that Sony’s lawsuit is based on hypotheses, as Light of Motiram is still in production and its alleged infringements may never occur.

The conflict reflects a common issue in the video game industry: the thin line between inspiration and copying. As both companies maintain firm positions, it is expected that the U.S. justice system will rule on the case, which could have significant implications for intellectual property in the sector. In a landscape where video game giants clash, the outcome of this litigation could define future copyright disputes in the industry.

The PlayStation Horizon saga, which has brought four games to life so far, seems to be on track to continue its expansion. However, the emergence of imitators is already being felt, with one of the most notable being Light of Motiram, developed by the Chinese studio Polaris Quest, a subsidiary of Tencent. This new title, which has caused a stir due to its obvious inspiration from Horizon Zero Dawn, has released a trailer showcasing its own features and distancing itself from its source of inspiration.

Its appeal is being the opposite of the Horizon saga in everything but aesthetics

Light of Motiram presents itself as a survival adventure focused on base building, the taming of mechanical creatures known as Mechanimals, and cooperative combat for up to ten players. Unlike what is seen in the Guerrilla Games title, this new game minimizes the narrative weight and seeks to maximize the online component. Players will be able to join and leave matches without affecting their progress, a proposal that could be appealing to those looking for a more flexible experience.

As for combat, Light of Motiram moves even further away from the Horizon style, opting for a focus on melee combat that emphasizes dodges, blocks, and counterattacks. The customization of mechs will allow players to take on different roles, from tanks to support units, adding variety to the gameplay system. This approach could attract a new audience eager to experience a different game, even if it shares certain similarities in its setting.

Scheduled for a 2025 release as a free-to-play title, Light of Motiram will be available on PS5, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. As development progresses, Tencent’s growing role in the video game industry, including its investments in Ubisoft and oversight of franchises like Assassin’s Creed, continues to spark conversation about its presence in the global market.

Former Sony executive gives his reason for leaving the company: its shift towards games as a service

Shawn Layden, an emblematic figure in the recent history of PlayStation, left the company in 2019 due to differences in the strategic direction the company was taking. During his time at Sony, Layden championed iconic titles such as God of War, The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Horizon Zero Dawn, solidifying PlayStation’s reputation for creating deep narrative experiences. However, in recent years, the company has shifted its focus towards games as a service, a business model that has generated controversy in the gaming community.

Shawn Layden has no interest in a games-as-a-service model

Since Layden’s departure, PlayStation has faced criticism for the cancellation of several projects in this area, including titles like The Last of Us and God of War. Despite these cancellations, the recent success of Helldivers 2 has rekindled Sony’s interest in this model, boosting its commitment to developing more games as a service. Among the new initiatives are the MMO based on the Horizon universe and Fairgame$, a multiplayer heist shooter, presented at the latest PlayStation Showcase.

In a recent interview, Layden explained his decision to leave Sony, noting that the company was prioritizing the development of games as a service and subscriptions, an approach that did not align with his creative vision. “I didn’t have the vision or the energy to take it into this new area of games as a service,” Layden stated. Despite the criticism, PlayStation continues to expand its strategy and has created new studios, such as Dark Outlaw Games, under the direction of Jason Blundell, known for his work on Call of Duty Zombies.

Channeling these changes, the video game industry watches with anticipation the upcoming announcements of new titles and the future that this transformation holds in strategic directions within PlayStation.

SAG-AFTRA will allow striking actors to participate in student projects and jams

SAG-AFTRA will allow striking actors to participate in student projects and jams

SAG-AFTRA has taken a significant step in its fight for the rights of video game actors by introducing the Student Interactive Exemption Agreement and the Game Jam Exemption Agreement. These agreements allow striking actors to participate in student projects, providing job opportunities without violating the strike that has been ongoing for eight months, which began on March 26. The measure aims to support early-stage video game developers, thus ensuring a steady flow of talent and creativity in the industry.

SAG-AFTRA is committed to the industry

The national executive director of SAG-AFTRA, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, highlighted that union members are committed to the industry and want to participate in projects that define the future of video games. However, it is crucial that the projects meet certain requirements to qualify under these exemption agreements.

The reason behind the extension of the strike is related to the demands of the actors, who are calling for protections against the misuse of artificial intelligence and the use of their image without consent. AI has become a central concern, as its misuse could threaten the viability of actors’ careers. Ashly Burch, known for her role in Horizon Zero Dawn, expressed her concern about the potential misuse of technology like AI, emphasizing that it is not the advancement itself that worries her, but the lack of legal protection for actors.

Video game studios have begun to feel the impact of the strike. For example, League of Legends is resorting to recycling old voice lines, while a recent episode of Destiny 2 was released without certain voice lines. This situation highlights the urgent need for an agreement between the actors and the studios to ensure that video game development can progress without compromising the rights of those involved.
