Nigthdive Studios has established itself as a benchmark in the preservation of forgotten video games, facing significant challenges such as licensing disputes, loss of assets, and technological limitations. In an effort to revive classics from the past, the studio has remastered iconic titles like Heretic and Hexen, originally released in 1994 by Raven Software, making them accessible to modern audiences.

Pure fantasy from another era, today

The remastered edition of these games not only incorporates graphical improvements but also focuses on accessibility, a priority for Nightdive. With newly implemented features such as a map system and control customization options, the studio aims to meet the needs of fans and enhance the gaming experience based on user feedback.

Stephen Kick, founder and CEO of Nightdive, emphasizes that accessibility is “a key part” of the studio’s mission. “When we remaster a classic game, we not only make it more appealing; we also ensure that it can be enjoyed by as many people as possible,” he added. Among the new features is a points of interest system that facilitates navigation in the complex worlds of Heretic and Hexen, thus improving gameplay for new players.

In addition to advancements in accessibility, Nightdive is committed to continuing to refine its future titles, recognizing areas where there is room for improvement, such as offering tailored options for colorblind players. Through these initiatives, Nightdive not only helps to rescue titles from oblivion but also sets a precedent for how video games can evolve, maintaining their essence while adapting to current needs. In an industry where many games fall into obsolescence, Nightdive’s work represents a renewing hope.

Nightdive Studios has announced the release of Outlaws + Handful of Missions Remaster, a revamped version of the classic title from 1997, scheduled for later this year. This remaster promises to offer a series of significant improvements, including 4K resolution, frame rates of up to 120, gamepad support, and four multiplayer modes. Among these modes is Kill The Fool With The Chicken, which adds a fun twist to the multiplayer experience.

A different shooter in an era where everything was possible

Outlaws, despite its ambition to recreate an authentic old west environment, did not enjoy the same popularity as other shooters of its time, such as Duke Nukem 3D. Released in a post-Quake setting, it received mixed reviews and was quickly overshadowed by other titles that dominated the market. However, it is recognized for being a pioneer in introducing innovative features, such as a scope that allowed for effective zooming and weapon reloading, as well as cutscene animations that were rare in shooters of the 1990s.

Despite the fact that many players do not remember Outlaws positively, it is undeniable that the title clashed with a very competitive FPS landscape. However, Nightdive’s fleet of remasterings, which has revitalized games that were not well received at the time, such as Heretic and Hexen, promises a renewed experience. Those who once struggled to enjoy this shooter at its launch will now have the opportunity to reconsider its legacy more than 20 years later.

With each new piece of information about the remastering of Outlaws, fans and new players are increasingly intrigued to revisit this forgotten gem and see how it has evolved thanks to the modernization that Nightdive will provide. Anticipation grows as the release of a game that, although not fondly remembered, has the potential to offer a nostalgic and fun experience is awaited.

Nightdive Studios has surprised the gaming community with the release of remasters for two classics from the 90s: Heretic and Hexen. These enhancements make both titles not only have sharper graphics but also offer gameplay optimized to modern standards, allowing play at 120 fps and with widescreen support.

Two games that needed a good facelift

Heretic, originally released in 1994 by Raven Software, is a title that combines action and fantasy, offering levels with a more sophisticated architectural design compared to its contemporary, Doom. The remaster updates its gameplay, enhancing iconic areas like The Guard Tower and The Citadel, which has led some players to reevaluate its legacy. Although it did not fully capture attention at its launch, many agree that this new version stands out for providing a more cohesive and engaging approach to level design.

On the other hand, Hexen, which followed Heretic in 1995, features a hub-based level structure, resulting in a more diverse gameplay experience, although it has been criticized for its confusing navigation. Nightdive has implemented significant changes that facilitate exploration, improving the game map and adding indicators that clarify missions and objectives. Although it remains a title with some limitations, the remastering makes it more accessible and enjoyable for current players.

Although both games were not the favorites in their time, the combination of Heretic and Hexen in this remastered package offers an appealing opportunity to revive two classic pieces from the past of video games with a fresh and contemporary approach. Nightdive Studios moves away from mere cosmetic work, focusing on gameplay and user experience.

The preservation of video games has become a crucial aspect to prevent the loss of discontinued titles, while also allowing fans to discover fascinating anecdotes about their creation. One of the developers that has taken the initiative in this area is Nightdive Studios, known for remastering classic games. Among their most notable works is the Enhanced Edition of System Shock 2, an original title from 1999 that is considered a spiritual predecessor to the Bioshock series.

Impossible to be more original

Recently, in a podcast from the Deep Dive series, hosted by Locke Vincent from Nightdive Studios, surprising details about the creative process behind this classic were revealed. Nate Wells, art director of System Shock 2, shared an interesting fact that has caught the attention of fans: the peculiar doors of the eighth level, known as The Many, were designed inspired by a sphincter. This aesthetic decision was made to reflect the organic nature of the level, which contrasts with the cybernetic setting of the rest of the game.

Wells explained that, after facing difficulties in finding an appropriate design, producer Josh Randall suggested using images from his recent colonoscopy as a reference. This unusual source of inspiration led to the creation of the disturbing doors in the game, which are ultimately altered photographs of Randall’s colon. Although there were theories among fans about the use of images of human anatomy for the textures of The Many, the exact origin of the design had remained unknown until now.

In its remastering, Nightdive Studios kept the original content, although they designed new images for the doors, which remain just as unsettling as their predecessors. These types of curiosities not only enrich the game’s history but also highlight the ingenuity and creativity of the developers of the time.

Doom finally receives a version with all its content over the years

Bethesda and Nightdive Studios have released a remaster of Doom and Doom II that incorporates not only the base games but also the master levels, Final Doom, and a new campaign titled Legacy of Rust. This effort to update the classic shooter stands out by bringing together all the additional adventures of Doom under one roof, providing fans with a robust and complete experience.

Doom is complete more than 30 years later

However, one of the highlights of this remastering was the omission of Sigil 2, designed by the iconic John Romero, co-creator of Doom. Initially, Sigil 2, which had been presented as a mod, is now officially integrated into the game’s library, completing the saga. This inclusion comes after a recent patch that also addressed minor bugs and compatibility issues with mods. Now, Sigil 2, which features larger and more challenging maps, appears on the game’s selection screen alongside other official episodes.

Romero has indicated that Sigil 2 was designed with a higher level of difficulty than Sigil 1, making it almost impossible to complete its levels without saving progress, unlike its predecessor. The reason behind the absence of Sigil 2 at the initial launch could be attributed to licensing obstacles that Bethesda was unable to resolve in time, despite the fact that several months have passed since its release in December 2023.

Not only that, on May 15, the release of Doom: The Dark Ages is expected, a prequel that has received positive early reviews. This new title promises to offer a different experience, challenging expectations about the series and generating excitement among fans for what it will bring. As can be seen, the universe of Doom continues to expand, strengthening its legacy in the world of video games.

Nightdive Studios, known for its ability to remaster classic games like Turok and System Shock, is now turning its attention to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 era. In a recent interview with VGC, the studio confirmed its intention to revive titles from a generation that marked a milestone in video game history, although not without facing significant technical challenges, especially related to the complex Cell processor of the PS3.

A challenge for those who believe there are many interesting games

The goal of Nightdive is clear: to prevent important works from the era from being forgotten. Stephen Kick, the head of the studio, explained that the work methodology is based on taking advantage of those games that have PC versions, which facilitates their adaptation to modern platforms through their KEX engine. “We are ready,” Kick stated, adding that the first step to take is to assess the availability of the source code and the quality of the assets, essential conditions to ensure a good remastering.

Throughout the interview, Kick emphasized the need to contact the original studios to discuss possible improvements and corrections that could be implemented in the remastered versions. He mentioned that numerous limitations, such as the frames per second rate and loading times, tend to be resolved almost naturally in the remastering process. However, addressing the specific challenges of the PS3 hardware will be a challenge that the team is prepared to face.

The generation of PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles is remembered for offering open worlds and impactful narratives in memorable titles. Nightdive Studios aims not only to revive these classics but also to preserve the history of video games in the face of the unstoppable advance of technology and the passage of time. The remastering of these gems from the past could bring back unforgettable experiences for players. According to some rumors, this initiative could pave the way for new versions of previously inaccessible works.

Two dark cult classics from Nintendo 64 make their way to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo 64 has always been the ugly duckling of Nintendo consoles. Unjustly so. It is a console with some titles that defined how 3D video games would be made, with authentic classics from the company, but also with excellent third-party games. It may not have the endless catalog of the first PlayStation or the incredible catalog of cult classics to discover from Sega Saturn, but it is a great console to be vindicated. As demonstrated by Nintendo with the announcement of its two new games for Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo has confirmed that the next two games coming to the service are two of the most acclaimed games from Akklaim’s catalog. Because Shadow Man and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil are coming to the service.

Shadow Man is the adaptation of a comic of the same name, from Valiant Comics, that puts us in the shoes of a man who lives between the world of the living and the dead and has to use this peculiarity to maintain peace between both realms. This becomes necessary when a group of serial killers, led by Jack the Ripper, are trying to break the separation between both worlds. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, on the other hand, is the sequel to Turok that improves practically everything from the original, where, in a first-person shooter, we will have to face dinosaurs and aliens in a wild environment in the only possible way: with shotguns.

Both games are an excellent showcase of the diversity of the Nintendo 64’s game catalog, which was far from being the exclusively family-friendly console that is sometimes portrayed. That said, it’s a peculiar selection of titles when both can currently be played in remastered versions by Nightdive Studios that are not only tremendously faithful to the original but also improve them in many aspects. This should not prevent us, in any case, from enjoying their original versions for what they are.

That’s why, whether it’s nostalgia or because they pique your interest, you can play these two Nintendo 64 titles right now on your Switch. As long as you have an active Nintendo Switch online subscription and, even more importantly, the spirit to defeat the dangerous threats they represent.
