In an impressive year-end report, Valve has revealed that Steam Deck players accumulated 330 million hours of gameplay during 2024, representing a remarkable 64% increase compared to the previous year. This growth underscores the potential of this portable device in a market that is still considered somewhat niche, but is beginning to attract the attention of major game developers.
More and more studies support Steam’s proposal
Developers like Square Enix and Ubisoft have officially begun to support the compatibility of their titles with Steam Deck, highlighting the importance of this platform. For example, Square Enix announced the compatibility of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, while Ubisoft confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be verified on the device. This move suggests a shift in publishers’ perception towards the growth of the portable PC market.
Valve also celebrated the arrival of SteamOS on the Lenovo Go S, a step that marks the beginning of a possible wave of third-party portable devices “powered by SteamOS.” Additionally, the company has mentioned the possibility of installing SteamOS on other portable devices such as the ROG Ally X or the latest version of the MSI Claw, which would further expand options for gamers. According to Valve, its investments in user interface, Linux compatibility, and input technology will benefit both developers and gamers.
Despite the expectations surrounding the Steam Deck 2, Valve continues to dominate the market thanks to its platform and game store. With an expanding ecosystem, future hardware developments look promising, and players will be able to enjoy their game libraries in a variety of contexts, whether at home, at the airport, or in the garden.
Ubisoft has confirmed that its upcoming title, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will run on Steam Deck from its launch, an update that has surprised many, as last month the company had ruled out the possibility of support for Valve’s device, citing that it was “below our minimum PC specifications.” However, it seems that the studio has conducted tests and adjustments that have allowed the game to run satisfactorily on the platform, although it is warned that the visual quality may not reach the optimal standard. The Steam Deck, a console that still has a lot to say
The launch of the Steam Deck OLED in November 2023 has demonstrated the potential of this device, with impressive performance running demanding titles like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. These games have received the “Verified” rating on Steam Deck, highlighting the hardware’s ability to handle intensive gaming experiences, which raises expectations about the performance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
However, doubts persist about the quality of the gaming experience on Steam Deck. Although the title may work, many large-scale games, like the ones mentioned, may present visual issues on smaller screens, which could affect the overall experience. The concern is that playing could make the graphic quality resemble more of a moving Claude Monet painting than a modern video game, presenting blurry images and an suboptimal frame rate.
On the other hand, the community of players who exclusively use Steam Deck as their primary device continues to grow. This highlights the importance of developers and studios catering to this expanding market. Although it has not yet been determined whether Assassin’s Creed Shadows will become one of the best games for Steam Deck, the availability of the title is a positive step towards including the portable audience in the offering of major titles. According to the author, the device is ideal for indie games, CRPGs, and titles like Vampire Survivors. And it seems that it will still allow us to use the hidden blade on it.

If you take a look at Longvinter, it will surely remind you of another well-known game, but be careful because it distances itself from it. It has finally left early access after three years of development, marking its arrival at the full version and offering players a unique experience that merges life simulation with survival and combat mechanics. Created by Uuvana Studios, this title allows players to interact peacefully or violently, adding a layer of complexity to its gameplay.
At first glance, Longvinter may remind players of iconic games like Animal Crossing, due to its colorful aesthetic and focus on building an idyllic life in a natural environment. However, its narrative takes a darker turn, as players assume the role of investigators searching for secrets of mysterious corporations, competing against other explorers for the same information. While peaceful coexistence is possible, players can also choose betrayals and fights for survival.
Unlike other titles in the genre like Stardew Valley, where activities are predominantly relaxing, Longvinter introduces shooter elements and strategic combat, transforming it into an isometric game that allows players to eliminate enemies and compete against other players. The recent update to version 1.0 has added new features, including oil platforms, a sniper rifle, and additional animal mounts.
In addition, Uuvana Studios has planned to implement cultivation systems and rentable apartments in the future, further expanding the gaming experience. The intention to bring Longvinter to Steam Deck also promises to improve accessibility and allow players to enjoy the title anywhere. With its unique combination of exploration, survival, and action, Longvinter stands out within the genre and will continue to evolve with future updates. Will you choose to build a peaceful home in nature or become a threat to other researchers? The decision is in your hands.

The controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows continues to be a hot topic for many. On March 20, players around the world are preparing to embark on a new adventure with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in the historic and fascinating Japan. However, those who planned to enjoy this experience on Valve’s Steam Deck have received disappointing news: Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will not be compatible with this device at the time of its launch.
In an article published on its official page, Ubisoft clarified that Assassin’s Creed Shadows does not meet the minimum PC requirements necessary to run on Steam Deck. In the section dedicated to technical questions, the company explained that the game has been labeled as Not Compatible in Valve’s rating system, which means it will not be able to run on the Steam Deck in its current state. This designation implies that users can forget the possibility of exploring the Japanese lands through this portable console.
Despite this refusal, Ubisoft hinted that there might be an option for future compatibility through a patch, although no further details were provided. This raises hopes among fans who long to play on their device of choice.
On the other hand, the title does not skimp on technical ambitions, allowing for an impressive visual experience on next-generation consoles. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will offer gameplay at 60 FPS and 4K resolution on PS5 and Xbox Series X, incorporating advanced technologies such as ray tracing, which will enable global illumination and more realistic visual effects. This promises to enhance immersion in the narrative of Naoe and Yasuke, the protagonists of this installment.

The simulation game Travellers Rest, which has captured the attention of life simulator and cozy game enthusiasts, allows players to take charge of a run-down tavern, transforming it into a cozy inn. Since its early access launch on Steam in 2020, the title has incorporated various features such as beekeeping, farming animal husbandry, and fishing, thus enriching the management and entertainment experience.
Setting up a tavern is fun, doing it with friends makes it even more so
In 2023, Travellers Rest added support for local cooperative play, allowing players to enjoy the adventure together. Now, it is in beta for online multiplayer, where up to three players can join to manage the tavern together. This new game mode promises to elevate the simulation experience by allowing collaboration and teamwork, which could result in more exciting and fun gameplay dynamics.
Players can use the gold earned to expand their tavern, grow crops, and unlock new recipes. As the business grows, there are opportunities to design and decorate new rooms, hire staff, and experiment with innovative drinks and dishes. This modular approach allows each player to bring their own style and personality to the business.
Additionally, Travellers Rest has been optimized for play on Steam Deck, which has proven to be a considerable advantage for those looking to relax after a busy day. This game has become a favorite in life simulation and cozy gaming communities, reinforcing its position in an increasingly competitive market. Players interested in exploring multiplayer should remember to back up their saved games to avoid any inconvenience during the transition to this new mode.
Video games have been with us for decades. And they have been playable across different devices for decades. Video games have been with us for decades. And they have been playable across different devices for decades. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t always been a clear division between types of players. Console and PC gamers are two very different fandoms that, although they have blurred in recent times, still feel clearly differentiated. In part, because there is still a sense that console gamers are more numerous. That playing on consoles is more prevalent than on computers, especially in Asia and the USA.
This is not entirely true. Not in Europe. But it is true that, at best, there has always been a certain parity between the two, with mobile devices gaining the upper hand over both in recent years. But it seems that, in the future, the PC might come to dominate over consoles.
According to a recent GDC survey, 80% of developers are currently working on some kind of computer game. The previous year this figure was 66%. This is consistent with the interest shown in the PC as a platform for video games, which has increased from 62% in 2023 to a surprising 74% in 2024 for the developers surveyed.
What is the reason for this interest? There are multiple reasons, but the most evident one is found in the survey itself. And that is because 44% of respondents say that one of the platforms they are interested in developing for is Steam Deck. That is the key. Valve’s hybrid console and computer has opened many doors that were previously closed. Something that developers know and want to exploit.
What has Steam Deck brought to the table? A new way to play. Following the example of the Nintendo Switch, Valve’s proposal was to create a device that allows us to play the same games as on our computer, but away from the monitor. Not necessarily outside the house, but on the sofa, bed, or armchair; a comfortable place where it’s easy to relax. And that is its success. Being portable enough to take it outside the house, but its main use is to use it indoors as a simplified computer. As if it were a console that, if we want, can behave like a computer.
That’s why Steam Deck works so well. Because it’s a Nintendo Switch, but even better. And that has made all the hardcore gamers, those who spend the most money and dedicate the most time to playing, want to have one. Or if it’s not a Steam Deck, at least a similar device like the many that have come out over time copying its idea. Opening up a previously undiscovered market niche.
Consoles are not experiencing their best moment… and that weighs
Now then, why has this niche opened up precisely now? Because of the movements of the two giants: Microsoft and Sony. Moving beyond exclusivities, there are fewer and fewer reasons to own a console. With fewer releases, more spaced out, closed environments, and moreover, that don’t even remain exclusive, the shift towards devices that are as convenient as a console, but more durable, more versatile, and where game prices vary more in favor of the players is a logical move. Especially among the more dedicated gamers.
That is why it is not surprising that, while those who were dedicated to mobile games continue to focus on them, those who had a focus more on consoles are starting to look more towards the PC. A growing market with an audience with a very marked interest in the medium.
What will happen in the future is a mystery, but it is not bold to say that this will surely increase. Consoles are becoming more restrictive and less attractive. The PC, in contrast and by its own nature, remains an open and highly interesting platform. This simplicity in form and substance that the Steam Deck has brought and that others have followed is surely the next logical step in the industry and what Microsoft and Sony will also want to follow. That’s why it shouldn’t surprise us if the industry continues to lean towards the PC, looking eagerly at its possibilities. Because its future may lie in the more open and free realm of the computer.
A recent report from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025 reveals that video game development for PC has reached unprecedented levels, with 80% of more than 3,000 developers surveyed working on projects for this platform. This figure marks a significant increase compared to the 66% reported in 2024, consolidating PC as the dominant platform in the video game industry. In comparison, only 38% of respondents are developing for PlayStation 5 and 34% for Xbox Series X/S. This increase in PC game development has been on a constant rise since 2020, when the […]
A recent report from the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025 reveals that video game development for PC has reached unprecedented levels, with 80% of over 3,000 developers surveyed working on projects for this platform. This figure marks a significant increase compared to the 66% reported in 2024, consolidating PC as the dominant platform in the video game industry.
In comparison, only 38% of respondents are developing for PlayStation 5 and 34% for Xbox Series X/S. This increase in game development for PC has been steadily rising since 2020, when 56% of developers stated they were working on this platform. The report also highlights that the interest in developing for PC has grown, reaching 74% of respondents.
The Culprit of Everything: Steam Deck
The GDC suggests that the growing popularity of the Steam Deck, mentioned by 44% of surveyed developers, could be driving this surge in PC development. The ease of access and distribution offered by Steam is a key factor, allowing developers to release their games more easily. In 2024, nearly 19,000 new titles were launched on Steam, which demonstrates the vitality of this platform.
However, the report highlights that its sample has a bias towards Western developers, with 58% of respondents coming from the United States. This could influence the results regarding the global industry, as the lack of representation from markets like China and Japan may lead to an underestimation of mobile game development and other platforms. While the PC developer community is growing, the job outlook is not entirely encouraging: 10% of respondents reported layoffs in 2024, and 4% indicated studio closures.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: the game you can play even in the bathroom (apparently)
Square Enix has highlighted the versatility of playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in various places, even suggesting that it can be enjoyed on trains, planes, and humorously, in the bathroom. Valve’s verification classifies game compatibility into four levels: Unknown, Unsupported, Playable, and Verified. Verified titles, like this one, offer full system support, controller compatibility, and better graphics according to the device’s default resolution.
Accompanying this announcement, a new trailer was released highlighting the significant improvements that players can expect in the PC version. These include enhanced lighting, optimized graphics, and compatibility with DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), as well as customizable graphic options and support for keyboard and mouse. This attention to detail suggests that Square Enix is committed to providing an enriching experience for PC players.
With these new developments, anticipation intensifies for what promises to be an immersive experience in the world of Final Fantasy 7. Many expect that the combination of unique storytelling and technical advancements will redefine the JRPG experience on portable platforms and PC. As details continue to emerge, fans are counting down the days to the release, once again positioning it as one of the most anticipated milestones in the world of video games.
