Leave everything you are doing: we have a new film by Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli

The trailer for Hayao Miyazaki new film finally arrives, not without some controversy behind it, promising us perhaps the best film of his career.

Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t need cover letters. Neither does Studio Ghibli. At this point, they don’t need to sell us their movies in any way. If they release a new movie, we’ll go see it. It is synonymous not only with anime or Japan, but with the highest quality and refinement. The best animation you can see, always. And that is why it is always worth celebrating that, once again, he failed to keep his promise to retire. Because Miyazaki is back. And as fit as ever.

We finally have before us the first trailer for The Boy and the Heron, the (presumably) last film by Hayao Miyazaki. Made under the Studio Ghibli umbrella, it is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino published in 1937. The novel was about a boy’s evolution to adulthood, through his relationship with his family and friends, through the turbulent (pre)war years.

The trailer, in truth, shows us little of the film. With an exquisite animation and spectacular music, it shows us that we are in front of a new incredible journey as we are used to from the studio. Speaking of life, death and a strong fantasy component, more reminiscent of Satoshi Kon than Miyazaki himself, the trailer leaves us with more questions than answers about the film. Which is always a good thing with a Ghibli film. But in this case with more than one reason.

In Japan the film premiered on July 14 under the name Kimitachi wa Dō Ikiru ka. Literally translated, How do you live? Despite being an absolute box office and critical success, they did not release any trailer for the film. Just a poster, where nothing of the same was shown. Even critics and fans tacitly agreed not to comment on it. It was decided that the film should be experienced in a vacuum, without knowing anything, and everyone involved accepted this. Something that has been lost in its arrival to the West, where the first thing that has been done is to create the first trailer for a film where, consciously and intentionally, it was avoided to make any kind of trailer.

Be that as it may, this is Hayao Miyazaki’s first film in ten years. Stating that he was retiring after The Wind Rises, he has returned, according to him one last time, to give us one last feature film with which to end his career. If this is true, only time will tell. Meanwhile, The Boy and the Heron has a release date for December 8 in the US, with no specific date for the rest of the world. Although it is to be hoped that it won’t take us much longer than that to see it in Spanish theaters.

The new Godzilla movie already has a full trailer: it’s the best thing you’ll see this week

The new Godzilla movie, Godzilla Minus One, has released its first trailer, showing us its tone and how it follows the style of Shin Godzilla.

This has been the summer of the nuclear bomb. The success of Oppenheimer has shown that there is interest in nuclear bombs, and many people have demanded that the movie tell the other side of the story. What happened in Japan. Something that Nolan’s film doesn’t address, nor does it intend to. But in Japan, nuclear bombs and their consequences are something that is always present in their culture. Including their movies. And also in what is probably their greatest cinematic icon: the ever-magnificent Godzilla.

Without a live-action Godzilla film since 2016, the excellent Shin Godzilla by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, 2023 is the year when the King of the Monsters returns to star in a movie. As we previously mentioned when the teaser was released, the movie is called Godzilla Minus One. But now, its first trailer has been released, and we have a handful of new details.

The first and most obvious detail is that the tone follows a very similar path to Shin Godzilla. With a bureaucratic tone and a visual and auditory aesthetic very close to the previous Godzilla film, the connection between the two is evident, even though they are narratively disconnected. This Godzilla Minus One is a reboot that will serve as the foundation for a shared universe of Toho monsters, in the style of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Godzilla Minus One, the thirty-third Godzilla film, is set in post-war Japan. After the nuclear bombings and surrender to the United States, Japan is slowly recovering economically and socially. Then, a new threat emerges to further shatter their already broken spirit: a giant lizard named Godzilla.

Directed and written by Takashi Yamazaki, known for works like Stand by Me Doraemon and Dragon Quest: Your Story, Godzilla Minus One promises to follow in the footsteps of Shin Godzilla. That means a dark tone, a focus on the impact on humans, and an evident political undertone. Something that has never been foreign to the franchise since it originated as a metaphor for the U.S. nuclear attacks but is easy to forget is in the DNA of our favorite Japanese monster.

However, everything takes a twist when Joshua realizes that this weapon takes the form of a child.”

“The classic ‘humans versus machines’ theme returns once again with a modern twist, focusing on artificial intelligence. This marks Gareth Edwards’ first film since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released five years ago. Alongside John David Washington, the cast features renowned actors such as Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), and Allison Janney (I, Tonya). Check out the trailer below:”

Fake Black Widow trailer gets 9 million views

Agent Romanoff’s dark beginnings take the stage in the fake trailer for the Black Widow movie.

Black Widow

Someone trolled us hard, but it looks so good we can’t even be mad. An upcoming Black Widow movie has been confirmed and we already know the director (Cate Shortland). There have even been a few set photos leaked. With the release date TBA, the environment is just right for someone truly evil to release a fake trailer. That someone was a YouTuber named ModeMarvelous. Here’s the (nearly believable) result:

The fake trailer has gotten more than 9 million views, and we’re not sure whether to be angry. On the one hand, it’s not real. It’s not fun being lied to, especially when people are so excited for any details regarding the movie. On the other hand, it’s hard to knock the quality. Okay, so that ID definitely says ‘Lucy,’ from Johansson’s 2014 movie but hey, she’s a spy, right? It’s a fake name!

The worst part is that this trailer looks like it’d make for a legitimately good movie. We see Black Widow going through her initial training, kicking butt as a spy, and meeting Hawkeye for the first time in a place that could pass for Budapest. It hurts to find out someone’s been crying wolf, but hey – at least we’ve got these cool leaked set photos?

Whether Taskmaster is going to be an actual villain is also anyone’s guess (though we think he’d be a perfect choice). Production for the actual Black Widow movie began in June, and there’s no actual trailer for it yet. If we do get one from Marvel this year, the bar is set pretty high.

Let us know in the comments below whether you’d go see the movie based on this sadly unofficial trailer!

Linda Hamilton is back to fight in Terminator: Dark Fate trailer

Lower this trailer into the lava, and protect our future.

Terminator Dark Fate

The future is not set, so we don’t know if “Terminator: Dark Fate” will score at the box office. But you can judge for yourself with the new teaser trailer:

What looks bad?

The Terminator franchise is meant to have three big human characters: John Connor, Sarah Connor, and Kyle Reese. Every Terminator film is meant to revolve around these characters who fight against, or alongside a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

This film throws that out the window and instead only features Sarah Connor who only makes a cameo during the trailer.  Instead, the clip prominently features new characters who seem incredibly bland. The most prominent new character is a Terminator with human characteristics named Grace. She is going through an existential crisis as she tries to figure out whether she is human or a machine.

Here’s the problem: filmmakers already tried that in “Terminator: Salvation” and it flopped badly.

If this was a film all about Sarah Connor trying to save the world, we’d have high hopes. Sarah is arguably the best character in all of Terminator, and her psyche is one of the most fascinating parts of the franchise.

One of the biggest reasons why people see these films is to see Schwarzenegger in action.

Unfortunately, we see almost zero footage of him at all in this trailer. No motorcycle chases, no shotgunning Terminators away, none of that. This trailer was just as big an insult as a dropkick to the back.

What might be good?

There are three things that might save this film. The first is that James Cameron, creator of the first two Terminator films, is back.

The second thing is that Linda Hamilton is back to play Sarah Connor after nearly 30 years of letting the part go to other actresses. Weirdly enough, the two most prominent actresses who have played her since Hamilton were “Game of Thrones” alums Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey.  In the first two Terminator films, Hamilton went from a damsel in distress, to a hardcore badass who is perfectly capable of fighting off cyborgs.

If we get a lot more Sarah Connor than the trailer suggests, we might be okay.

The final saving grace is Schwarzenegger himself. Sure, he was in the awful “Terminator: Genisys,” but all of his action scenes were still pretty cool.

If anyone can save the movie it’s these three. If they can’t make it work, then the series might need to be terminated.

Terminator as a franchise

Let’s go back in time to the early ’90s.  You just saw “Terminator 2: Judgement Day” in theaters, and it blew your mind. The story, special effects, action, and even the acting were all incredible.

Fast-forward nearly 30 years later, and that film is still absolutely incredible.

The Terminator franchise hasn’t captured the same lightning in a bottle since. “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” was smart to stick with the main storyline, and some of the action was solid, but it’s otherwise forgettable.

The most memorable part of “Terminator: Salvation” was Christian Bale’s meltdown on set.

VIDEO IS NSFW:

“Terminator: Genisys” was so laughably bad, that it made the second-to-last episode of “Game of Thrones” look like one of the highlights of Emilia Clarke’s career.

If you want to make a good Terminator movie, you need to focus on the following:

* A tight story focused on the Connor family

* Arnold Schwarzenegger as a prominent character

* Huge action scenes that are both creative and fun to watch (come on, even “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” did that right)

* Side characters that add to the main cast rather than take the spotlight

* Next-level special effects

If you get these things right, then you can make a solid Terminator movie. Until then, feel free to lower this stinker of a trailer into the lava.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ trailer shows witch at war

See the new trailer for the ‘Maleficent’ sequel.

Maleficent

The dark witch is back in Disney’s first trailer for “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.”

The trailer shows Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, as she wages a one-witch war on the kingdom near the Moors from the first film. Maleficent appears to be at odds with the new queen played by Michelle Pfeiffer.

The first film, “Maleficent,” retold the classic “Sleeping Beauty” story from the perspective of the villain. In that movie, Maleficent wasn’t always evil and only fought the kingdom after being betrayed by the king.

Maleficent was also given a complicated relationship with Princess Aurora, played by Elle Fanning. She still lays a curse on her as she does in the original story, but this time, she forms a bond with her while watching her grow up. The two form what could almost be described as a mother-daughter relationship. When Aurora is cursed, Maleficent fights to save her. It is also Maleficent’s kiss that ends up bringing her back from her eternal sleep.

We are hoping to see Maleficent use the full force of her powers. We want to see her become a fire-breathing dragon, lay curses on her enemies, and summon armies to do her bidding. Also, we want to see her do all those things while touting those menacing cheekbones.

The film is set to come out in October of this year.
