In September, the NES will be receiving a new game in Japan. Yep, you read that date right: here we are in 2018 and the classic NES is still getting new games. Below you’ve got the latest game cartridge for the original Nintendo.
It’s the Japanese version of Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril, a game that some fans developed under the name Sivak Games. It came out in 2010 with an English version and even had a game cartridge.
Here’s the trailer in question:
Battle Kid: Fortress of Peril is a difficult game and it’s fairly old-school. Check out this legendary moment on the YouTube channel GameGrumps. One of them tried to beat one of the final bosses, a giant plant. All he got was outrage.
Here you’ve got a great animated version of his frustrating attempts:
At this rate, NES will still be getting new games in 2050!
A Chrome extension called Grouply.io has been discovered allowing third parties to get data from private Facebook groups.
The discoverer of this security breach was Andrea Downing, a moderator of a Facebook group that brings together women with BRCA, a gene associated with breast cancer. Downing explains that the theoretical privacy of a Facebook group lets women share their problems, stories and build strong relationships. For example, members posted images of their surgical procedures and experiences and advice about staying healthy.
Downing started to worry whether the group was safe from prying eyes after recent Facebook scandals. She checked it out and discovered that this Chrome extension Grouply.io, now defunct, had allowed downloads of names, jobs, places, emails and other personal data from anybody in a private Facebook group.
Downing contacted an expert in health data monitoring, Fred Trotter, to investigate the case. Trotter found out that closed (private) Facebook groups had a serious security breach.
Downing got in touch with Facebook. But neither she nor Trotter have been satisfied with the social network’s statements.
The good news is that since June 29, it’s no longer possible to get data from private groups. What a coincidence, just a month after Downing made her discovery and informed Facebook about it.
The bad news is that before then, there’s a chance that third parties had access to our data through private Facebook groups. In the case of this group of women, a health insurer could have used this extension to create their own database.
WhatsApp will soon have stickers for reactions. You’ll be able to use these stickers to show your reactions to specific messages. For now, the site WABetaInfo has posted four reactions: sad, love, happy and wow. It’s unknown if there will be more reactions or not.
For a change, WhatsApp hasn’t confirmed the feature, but it was seen in the latest beta version. It’s unclear when it will be released to the regular version.
A few days ago, it was confirmed that Instagram will soon have Facebook reactions. In this case, they’ll only be available in the Stories section.
All the features on Facebook seem to be gradually getting adapted by other apps, at least in some way.
WhatsApp will offer a $50,000 prize to those who effectively answer this question: “What would you do to end fake news?”
Facebook has created the WhatsApp Research Awards (WhatsApp Research Awards for Social Science and Misinformation) with the aim to end hoaxes and lies spread virtually on this popular app.
Want to make $50,000? Anybody can enter the competition (whether you have programming knowledge or not), but you have to propose a research project that tries to block fake news, while ensuring the correct use of technology. This last requirement implies subtopics such as the handling of information, the way to process sensitive content and how to timely detect inappropriate behavior.
“We welcome proposals from any social science or related discipline that foster insights into the impact of technology on contemporary society in this problem space. The WhatsApp Research Awards will provide funding for independent research proposals that are designed to be shared with WhatsApp, Facebook, and wider scholarly and policy communities,” explains Facebook.
Besides this prize, Facebook will prepare two workshops related to fake news. In the first, chosen projects will be presented, while the second will deal with the practical application of these ideas.
A mother takes a video of her son riding his bike around a mansion. When she goes home and checks the video, she finds an eerie figure watching her son from one of the windows of the mansion. By zooming in, it looks like the ghost of a woman dressed in the Victorian era.
No, this isn’t the plot of a movie about curses and ghosts, but rather what happened to Louise Lenton when she went to visit Oldway Mansion (Paignton, England), with her husband and 5-year-old son.
Here’s the ghostly encounter on camera:
Oldway Mansion was built in the late 19th century by Isaac Singer, the founder of the famous Singer sewing machine company. He died shortly before the construction was completed. His third son, Paris Eugene Singer, renovated the house to resemble the Palace of Versailles and the Place de la Concorde.
Access to the mansion has been restricted to the public for years, but its beautiful gardens keep attracting tourists.
Due to its current state at the time of recording, there were only security guards inside Oldway Mansion. So we can throw out the idea of a woman making a joke or an actress performing a period piece.
Louise Lenton sent a copy of the video to the local authorities to investigate what happened. After all, we’re talking about a physical or ghostly intrusion into a private building.
Do you believe it’s a ghost? Or just a strange optical illusion? Or, despite what we’ve mentioned, do you think it’s somebody making a joke? Let us know below!
Starting February 1, 2020, users with old versions of Android or iOS won’t be able to use WhatsApp. Specifically, cell phones will stop being able to use WhatsApp if they have Android 2.3.7 or earlier and iOS 7 or earlier.
WhatsApp has announced that from now on, they will stop supporting cell phones with these versions. This means that, if you’re included in this group, you could be left without future WhatsApp updates. It’s also possible that some existing features may stop working.
There aren’t specific numbers on how many users this change will affect. We know from Google that 0.3% of its users still have cell phones with Android 2.3.7. This translates to about 6 million cell phones and tablets. What about versions before 2.3.7.? Well, that remains a mystery.
Last December, WhatsApp also announced that it would stop supporting cell phones with Windows 8.0 or earlier, as well as the Nokia Symbian S60, Blackberry OS and Blackberry 10.

You can find out everything WhatsApp knows about you. The latest beta version of WhatsApp (version 2.18.128) lets you download a transparency report, a document that the European Union has imposed on social networks and messaging apps. The normal version of your favorite app will have this report ready before May 25, which is the deadline the EU has determined for making this report available to users.
Want to take a look at this report? Download the beta version of WhatsApp (from this link), click on the three vertical dots, then on Settings and Account. There, you’ll see the new option “Request info on my account.” Hopefully, you’re not in a rush because WhatsApp will notify you that the report could take between 1-3 days to complete. However, the first users to try it out say that the report takes a few hours to be sent over, not days.
While you wait for this report to arrive, don’t even think of making any drastic changes to your account, such as changing your number. In this case, the process of creating and sending the report will be canceled.
Once you receive the report, download it. You’ll then have a .ZIP file in your hands. Inside, there will be two folders: one in HTML format, the other in JSON. You only have to worry about the first: this one has all the info that matters and can be opened using any browser.
If you don’t want to download the report but you want to know what type of info it has about you, you’ll be relieved to know that the content WhatsApp stores isn’t as worrisome as Facebook. There is basic info on the user (cell phone number, device operating system), registration info (such as cell phone model), and the status of your settings.
Google has relaunched Google Drive with a new interface and design. Now, the cloud storage tool has a cleaner look and other aesthetic updates.
Some examples include: a more transparent background color, a new font, rounded corners… Many of the changes follow Google’s Material Design style guide.
In this sense, Google has gotten a makeover. A few days ago, Google surprised us with an important Gmail redesign, possibly its second most important app after Google Drive. Aesthetically, the new Google Drive looks exactly like the new Gmail, making Google products more consistent.
