The third season of Star Wars: Visions has arrived on Disney+ with a mixed reception, polarizing fans of the iconic saga. This new volume, which includes prominent anime studios such as Production I.G, Wit Studio, and Studio Trigger, explores a wide range of styles and narratives, reigniting the debate about what truly constitutes the Star Wars universe.

Disconnected from the classic?

Although the series has been praised for its innovation and experimentation, many episodes seem disconnected from the traditional essence of the franchise. For example, The Duel: Payback and Child of Hope have been highlighted as examples of how innovation can occur without betraying the central narrative of Star Wars. In contrast, episodes like The Song of Four Wings and Yuko’s Treasure have faced criticism for straying too far from the expected identity, generating frustration among the purists of the saga.

The most ardent followers feel that episodes like Yuko’s Treasure, which features a talking teddy bear, and The Song of Four Wings, with its questionable stylistic elements, could alienate the fan base by breaking the internal logic of the Star Wars universe. This type of visual element, while potentially appealing, raises an essential question: where should Lucasfilm set the creative boundaries?

The series aims to be a laboratory of creativity, but it is essential that creators maintain a minimal connection to the fundamentals of Star Wars. With the arrival of this season, a broad debate is anticipated about what fans expect and what Star Wars really is. At such a delicate moment for the franchise, Lucasfilm could benefit from establishing clearer guidelines on the identity of its iconic universe, thus ensuring that the series remains a space for experimentation while not forgetting its roots. Star Wars: Visions promises to continue generating passionate conversations while solidifying itself as a divisive phenomenon in the fan community.

This new project would add to the growing list of successful video game adaptations on the platform, such as The Witcher, Arcane, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. With Crash Bandicoot and its legacy marked by a golden era in the 90s, the character seeks to revive its relevance in the contemporary entertainment world after more than a decade of inactivity.

Crash Bandicoot arrives on the small screen

The production of the series will be handled by WildBrain Studios, known for its work on Sonic Prime, an adaptation that has been well received, achieving a 7.2 on IMDb and an 81% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The studio’s experience in animation suggests that the Crash series could benefit from a similar approach, capturing the essence of the marsupial that won the hearts of players.

Phil Spencer, president of Microsoft’s gaming division, has hinted that more adaptations of franchises under his control are being prepared, which reinforces Netflix’s strategy of bringing video games to television. Although there is still no official confirmation regarding release dates or cast details, the anticipation is palpable among fans. It is also rumored that Activision could take advantage of the series launch to present new titles related to the saga or reissues of the classics.

The marsupial has had a television past that includes a canceled series in which the character was set to have a leading role, as well as his appearance in Skylanders Academy, a project that, although it did not achieve the expected success, was aired on Netflix. As more video game adaptations are produced, this Crash Bandicoot series could be a crucial link in consolidating the franchise’s presence in modern television.

Ubisoft is developing a remake of the acclaimed Splinter Cell franchise, although details about its release date are limited. During a recent conversation, Guillaume Dousse, director of the animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, expressed his excitement for the project, highlighting his long history as a fan of the game. However, he was unable to provide specific information about the remake due to security and confidentiality restrictions.

Cannot talk about the details of it

Fans of the series have been waiting over ten years for a new Splinter Cell title, which has raised expectations around the remake and the potential influence of the new animated series. Dousse mentioned the relevance of stealth and strategy in the mechanics of the original game, emphasizing the importance of the remake providing an authentic experience that respects the essence of the original game.

In an interview, Dousse clarified that there were connections with the team working on the remake, and although he could not reveal details, he reaffirmed that there have been discussions about this anticipated project. “I wish I could share more,” he said with a laugh. This leaves fans with very little information beyond the confirmation that the remake is in progress, with no clear timeline for its release.

The director also addressed his desire for the animated series to drive the return of new games within the franchise. Dousse confessed his preference for a remake of the first Splinter Cell, describing it as a memorable experience that deserves to be rediscovered in its entirety, rather than simply improving the resolution. Although he doesn’t know how the animated series could translate into a game, he is eager to see how these ideas develop.

The long-awaited third season of One-Punch Man has finally premiered, after six years of waiting, and is now available on Crunchyroll. However, the reception of the first episode has been divisive among fans, who seem to have mixed opinions about the quality of the animation and the fluidity of the action scenes.

A not very smooth and interesting animation

Some users on platforms like Reddit have expressed their discontent, pointing out the presence of “static frames” and a notable lack of fluidity. “For an episode that had almost 0 breathing space… it was mostly filled with still frames. I’m afraid of how they will handle the fights,” wrote a viewer. These comments reflect a widespread concern about the direction the series will take after a long wait.

Despite the criticism, there are those who praise the visual aspects of the first episode, highlighting the quality of the drawings, the lighting, and the color. “I think the best part so far is the visuals themselves, which are better than the second season,” commented a fan. This type of opinion suggests that some viewers see potential in the future development of the series, especially in the action scenes, where they hope the studio will invest more effort.

The first episode focused on the introduction and exposition of the plot, which may justify the lesser amount of animation. “There isn’t much that needed to be animated in this episode, as it is a context delivery after the previous season,” analyzed a fan, who also mentioned the good quality of the dubbing and the music.

With the first episodes marking an uncertain course and the fan community on alert, the series will have to prove its place in the hearts of its followers. Meanwhile, the upcoming episodes are expected to meet the high expectations generated by the wait.

Netflix's intentions with The Kpop Warriors are being ruined by its original creators

The animated movie Kpop Warriors, which has surpassed 325 million views on Netflix, has captivated a massive audience, becoming one of the platform’s biggest successes. However, this success has sparked a flood of proposals for its expansion, including the temptation to create a live-action version, an idea that its director, Maggie Kang, has firmly rejected.

They don’t think they would function as real people

During a recent interview with the BBC, Kang argued that the transition to live action could compromise the tone and comedy that characterize animation. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too real. For me, it wouldn’t work at all,” he emphasized. His co-director, Chris Appelhans, also supported this stance, noting that animation allows for the creation of fantastic scenes and characters that would be difficult to reproduce in a realistic format. “One of the best things about animation is that you can create compositions with incredibly fantastic attributes,” Appelhans added.

Despite these statements, the future of Las Guerreras Kpop seems bright, with forecasts suggesting an increase in related projects by 2027. This includes the possibility of concerts with the lively protagonists, although the idea of a live-action version is still under discussion, generating skepticism among the creators. Kang and Appelhans advocate for the preservation of animation, highlighting that many anime remakes into live action have been unsatisfactory and, at times, forced.

With the success of the film, discussions are likely to continue, although the filmmakers remain steadfast in their defense of what they consider the true essence of the project. As Appelhans has said, “the joy of animation is how far you can go and elevate what can be done.”

This production delves into the lives of those trying to pursue their dreams in an environment where Earth is no longer a viable option.

Mars: the next destination

Ancient China of Mars presents itself as a unique proposal that combines elements of science fiction with comedy and drama, allowing for a deep exploration of the human struggle for survival and hope in adverse circumstances. The series challenges expectations by situating its narrative in a restaurant that, despite being in an extraordinary environment like a space station, faces everyday operational issues, reflecting a broader struggle in a world that has changed radically.

The series participates in the MIA Market, a prominent event held in Rome during the month of October, where creators and producers from various entertainment industries present their projects to potential distributors and investors. The choice of an event like the MIA Market underscores the ambition of Ancient China of Mars to capture the attention not only of the audience but also of key players in the industry.

The fusion of cultural elements with futuristic technology in Ancient China of Mars promises to generate an intriguing narrative product that combines the aesthetics of science fiction with cultural references from ancient China. With the growing popularity of the genre, it is expected that this series will resonate widely with a diverse and global audience.

OpenAI has announced the production of its first animated film, titled Critterz, which will premiere in 2026, with a planned debut at the Cannes festival. This film aims to demonstrate that it is possible to create low-cost animated cinema, with a budget of less than 30 million dollars and a development timeline of just nine months. However, the focus on cost reduction raises questions about public acceptance of a work created with artificial intelligence.

Made by AI, but practically everything is done by humans

The company has decided to assign the script to human screenwriters, rather than relying on the capabilities of ChatGPT, considering that artificial intelligence has not managed to create an adequate script. This decision reflects a clear recognition of the current limitations of AI in the creative field. Nevertheless, the use of technology to reduce operational costs underscores OpenAI’s intention to revolutionize the film industry, making Hollywood executives more receptive to investing in automated solutions.

Despite its ambitious plan, OpenAI faces significant uncertainties. Critterz lacks an associated distributor, which could affect both public interest and box office success. A company representative has acknowledged that this project is “a very ambitious experiment,” admitting that the future of marketing and public reception is uncertain. The previous short of Critterz, released in 2023, did not generate much enthusiasm among viewers, raising more questions about the viability of the project on a large scale.

The director of the initial short, Chad Nelson, described it as a mix of Planet Earth and Monty Python, but the comparison did not seem to resonate with the audience. Furthermore, as of today, it is unclear whether moviegoers will be willing to watch a film created by artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, time will tell if Critterz will capture the attention that OpenAI hopes for.

The iconic animated series The Simpsons has proven to be a goldmine not only for its creators and main actors but also for those who, despite having appeared briefly, have managed to benefit enormously. A notable example is actress Jenniffer Tilly, who made a cameo playing herself in an episode of season 24 titled Goodbye, Abie, goodbye. Despite her limited participation, Tilly has revealed that her annual earnings related to the series range between 6 and 9 million dollars, thanks to a divorce settlement with Sam Simon, one of the co-creators of the series.

A highly profitable agreement

Sam Simon, who left the project in its early seasons, had a financial agreement that guaranteed him between 20 and 30 million a year, income that continued to benefit his heirs after his death in 2015. This financial scheme was designed so that Simon could obtain a considerable share of the income derived from merchandising and copyright, which also includes Tilly due to her divorce agreement, which grants her 30% of the net income from the series.

For a series with the longevity and popularity of The Simpsons, the monetary compensations received by its main contributors are understandable. Although Tilly’s role was smaller and later compared to other actors, her participation has proven to be extremely lucrative, allowing her to accumulate significant earnings over time. This fact underscores the lasting impact that the series has had on popular culture and on the finances of those involved, whether in an episode or since the very creation of the program.

Thus, Jenniffer Tilly stands out as a particular example of how, through financial agreements and royalties, the cultural phenomenon that is The Simpsons has ensured a stable financial future not only for its original creators but also for its occasional collaborators.
