Bungie has announced that Marathon, its highly anticipated extraction title, will be released on September 23 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game has generated high expectations among players due to its intergalactic style and smooth controls, features that were highlighted in the early impressions of the title. However, one of the most discussed points in the community is its pricing model.

A price that creates expectations and fears

According to Bungie, Marathon will be a premium title, but it will not be offered at full price. This term has led to confusion and speculation, as the expected price range varies between 30 and 90 euros. To put this in context, the video game industry has recently seen a price increase, with popular titles hovering around 70 euros, while others, like Mario Kart World, reach 90 euros. This wide range has left players wondering what the final cost of Marathon will be.

However, the decision not to opt for a free model has raised concerns among certain sectors of the community. Some players express their fear that this choice could harm the success of the game, especially in a market where there are both full-price titles, like Helldivers 2, which costs 40 euros, and free-to-play options, like Delta Force. Comments on social media suggest that the fact of not being free could negatively impact the reception of the title.

As the release date approaches, Bungie fans are hoping for more details to be revealed, specifically about the final price of the game. Meanwhile, Marathon is shaping up to be an attractive competitor in an ever-evolving gaming market, although its viability will depend on how it meets consumer expectations.

Bungie, known for its iconic legacy in video game development, is venturing into a crowded genre with the release of Marathon, a PvPvE extraction shooter. With a scheduled release date in September, the game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. As the studio enters a market already dominated by titles like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, Bungie’s strategy aims to attract not only veteran players but also those who have had limited or unsatisfactory experiences with extraction shooters in the past.

A game that seeks to simplify an extremely complex genre

Joe Ziegler, the game director, has emphasized that Marathon aims to provide a new and interesting experience, focusing on what truly attracts players to extraction shooters. According to Ziegler, the goal is to eliminate the complexity that often accompanies this type of game, making the mechanics more accessible for new players. “We want to give players what they expect from an extraction shooter in terms of tension and survival, without the need to learn a new set of rules,” he commented.

Andrew Witts, gameplay director, added that the intention is for Marathon to be easy to share with friends, allowing anyone to take control and enjoy the experience without a steep learning curve. Simplicity in action and gameplay are key elements that Bungie is trying to highlight with this title.

After playing Marathon for eight hours, although critics are unsure if it will achieve comparable success to other recent releases, Bungie’s proposal suggests a notable effort to build an accessible title aligned with current expectations in the world of video games. As the release date approaches, interest in seeing how Marathon will perform in such a competitive market continues to grow.

Bungie is ready to reveal more details about Marathon, their new shooter, during a live stream scheduled for April 12. This presentation promises to offer the first look at the gameplay of this highly anticipated title, of which very little had been shown since its announcement in 2023.

What has happened in these two years?

Marathon is a reboot of an original game released in 1994, but unlike the first title, which focused on a narrative campaign, the new approach is geared towards multiplayer. This decision may be disappointing for some fans who were hoping for a storyline similar to that of Destiny. Although Bungie has proven its ability to create engaging multiplayer shooters, the transition to a PvP and extraction format raises questions about the direction of the game.

The development of Marathon has faced several challenges, including the dismissal of its original director due to allegations of inappropriate conduct and mass layoffs that affected 220 employees in 2024. These circumstances have raised concerns among Bungie followers, who have seen the game’s potential clouded by the complicated context from the company.

As the perception of shooters has drastically changed in the industry, especially after the closure of Concord and other similar failures, Marathon may struggle to resonate with players. However, despite these uncertainties, there is a palpable interest in its official launch, and fans hope that Bungie will apply its expertise to deliver an exciting gaming experience.

On April 12, fans will finally be able to see what Bungie has in store for Marathon. Although it won’t be the narrative experience that some long for, the gameplay reveal could indicate whether this change in direction will be a successful strategy.

Bungie has officially announced an exciting gameplay reveal for its upcoming project, Marathon, scheduled for April 12 at 10 am PDT. This title represents a reboot of the company’s classic FPS and is presented as an extraction multiplayer shooter, where players will compete for loot that they will lose if they do not successfully extract it.

An extraction shooter from which we still need to receive more information

Set on the enigmatic planet Tau Ceti IV, Marathon will have players take on the role of Runners, cybernetic mercenaries designed to survive in hostile environments. As they explore the ruins of an ancient colony, players will seek valuable items, including new weapons and gear, while facing off against each other in intense PvP battles.

Information about Marathon has been quite limited so far, which has generated growing anticipation among fans. Along with the announcement of the reveal, the existence of characters with the codenames Thief and Stealth has also been confirmed, although more details about their roles and abilities in the game are unknown.

The reveal will be broadcast on Marathon’s official channel on Twitch and will also have a dedicated page on Steam, where players can get more information after the presentation. Although it has been announced that impressions of the game will be shared after the event, it is unclear whether journalists will have direct access to cover it, as some sources suggest that not all media are invited to participate in the coverage.

With the announcement of this event and the use of an intriguing ARG and a trailer that has caused a stir, the anticipation for Marathon only grows. Bungie fans, as well as new players, will be paying close attention to all the details revealed in this highly anticipated presentation.

Destiny 2 lost a lot of players over two months, this is how they avoided losing more

From September 2022 to November 2022, Destiny 2 experienced a drop in its weekly active user count to levels not seen since 2018, alarming the developers at Bungie. According to Alan Blaine, lead technical designer, this decline occurred without a clear cause, leading Bungie’s management to worry about the sales of the annual expansion, which were far below expectations.

An agile change based on retaining, not seeking new players

In light of this situation, an agile team known as the player retention team was formed, dedicated to improving player experience and retention within the game. This strategic approach included the implementation of significant changes in a short period of time, prioritizing constant communication with the community through weekly emails that shared updates on development and highlighted changes.

As a result of these efforts, 17 unique changes were implemented in the six weeks leading up to the launch of the Lightfall expansion, receiving a mostly positive response from the community. However, although the PRT managed to boost the morale of players and developers, the Lightfall expansion was harshly criticized, even though many of its issues were not related to the work of the retention team.

Despite a critical error that caused a 24-hour game outage and the use of one of the few database rollbacks in the history of Destiny 2, the efforts of the PRT are considered a success and a playbook has been developed for future initiatives. This process has raised questions about whether a permanent retention team would be a long-term solution, as each situation in game development requires a fresh and flexible approach.

Former GTA developer believes that the release of GTA6 could revitalize the industry

The video game industry is facing a challenging moment, marked by the closure of prominent studios such as Monolith Productions and Arkane Austin, as well as significant layoffs at Bungie and Rocksteady. Even highly successful titles, such as Marvel Rivals, have had to reduce their staff in the U.S. The uncertainty in the sector has led many to point out that the release of GTA 6 could act as a catalyst to revitalize the market and create new job opportunities.

It is necessary to better understand what the players want

Leslie Benzies, a veteran of Rockstar and the current head of the studio Build a Rocket Boy, which is developing the game MindsEye, has shared his perspective on the current state of the industry. In an interview, Benzies argued that there is a finite player base, pointing out that “there are no more hours in the day” and that the exponential growth of the video game supply is beginning to have concerning implications, manifested through closures and layoffs in recent times.

Benzies’ advice to developers in the sector is clear: “Nowadays, we need to analyze the analytics. We must see what people want to play”. However, these ideas are not universally agreed upon. Johan Pilestedt, director of Helldivers 2, has urged studios to avoid “safe bets” and focus on creativity and innovation. According to Pilestedt, relying solely on proven formulas can be a “death sentence” for the industry.

Benzies also emphasized the importance of experimentation in game development, suggesting that his studio uses user-generated content systems to build low-cost test levels. This strategy allows for adjusting ideas based on audience feedback before making large investments in development. MindsEye, the new project, aims to provide an experience similar to platforms like Roblox and Minecraft, where user creation and participation are key.

Bungie accidentally launches the following Destiny 2 event almost three weeks early

The Rite of the Nine event in Destiny 2, which was supposed to launch on April 1 along with Act 3 of Heresy, was accidentally activated before the scheduled date. Bungie, the game’s developer, has confirmed that this early launch was due to a technical glitch and that it will disable all activities related to the event “as soon as possible”.

An event full of surprises

Despite being a surprise for players, the available content includes temporary versions of the weapons inspired by the three dungeons that the event features: Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep. These weapons, while functional, lack final textures, giving them a rough appearance. Nevertheless, their utility could attract many players, as dungeons are highly valued activities in the community.

This event is also free for all Destiny 2 players, eliminating the need to own season passes or expansions, which should facilitate greater participation. However, Bungie has faced criticism for previous mistakes in handling the game, including unexpected changes in functionalities and content leaks. These incidents have generated frustration in the community, leading to increased expectations regarding what Rite of the Nine will be able to offer.

Despite the brief and premature appearance of the event, it is expected to return in its full and official version on April 1. Over the years, Bungie has consistently dealt with similar issues in Destiny 2, which has fueled doubts about its ability to effectively manage the title in the long term. The community eagerly awaits the announcement of the full event, which will undoubtedly be an incentive to return to combat in the exciting universe of the game.

Destiny 2 introduces a roguelike mode with Court of Blades

Bungie has announced the return of the Io location to Destiny 2, which will be one of the key settings for the new activity known as Court of Blades. This news marks the return of an area that was sidelined in 2020 with the release of Beyond Light, generating a critical response from players. The recent recovery of old planets and moons, such as Mars and Titan, suggests that Bungie continues to explore player nostalgia and reintroducing content that had been removed.

A roguelike way, although not exactly

The Court of Blades is an activity designed to be unique and challenging in each execution, with direct interactions with Oryx, the Taken King, something that hasn’t been seen in years. Inspired by roguelike elements, this mode presented by Bungie focuses on Augmentations, which offer challenges that players can overcome in various ways, accumulating as the activity is completed more times. This dynamic allows each player to face a distinct set of challenges and create customized strategies to tackle them.

The available armaments in the Court of Blades will rotate daily, creating a new goal each day and allowing for strategic combinations. According to what was shared by the activity designer, Quentin Quinones-Rezin, the aim is for this activity to last around 10 minutes and be free of mechanics similar to raids, seeking to be a less stressful experience. However, the difficulty will progressively increase after each pair of challenges.

For players seeking a greater challenge, an Expert Mode will be offered that will allow obtaining Adept versions of the weapons, which will not be available in the standard mode. Additionally, Bungie has revealed a new event focused on the dungeon called Rite of the Nine and a PvP mode where players will be able to pilot a brig, thus expanding the entertainment options in this popular game.

Everything we know so far about Destiny: Rising

Few online shooters have as passionate a following as Destiny. This is a beloved franchise, respected for its inventiveness and its ability to always find a way to put a new spin on its formula. It is also true that it has had its problems, especially with some decisions by Bungie on how to manage its growing content, but it has always emerged successfully from them. And for that reason, its new mobile game is one of the most anticipated.

About Destiny: Rising, we know from the outset that it will take place in an alternate timeline after the Collapse. Focusing on humanity, it will place us on Earth with its inhabitants trying to repel an alien invasion. For this, we will receive assistance from the Iron Lords, a group of legendary guardians who previously protected humanity.

Being Destiny, an important part of the game is the customization of our weapons. And it seems there will be some of that in Destiny: Rising. NetEase has confirmed that Exotic Weapons can be customized to fit our play style, suggesting that there will be some kind of statistics involved. Additionally, they have also confirmed that there will be a new rarity class, the Mythic, and a new weapon class, the crossbow, thus adding another incentive to make the leap to this new experience.

Another interesting thing is that, despite being a game designed for mobile devices, Destiny: Rising will be compatible with controllers from the start. While it is designed to be completely playable with just the screen, given the density of the classic Destiny, it is likely that using a controller for some of the more advanced parts of the game will be more than desirable. Especially considering how challenging Destiny can be in everything related to its end game.

Regarding the game modes, we currently know that it will have both PVE and PvP modes, with a campaign for up to 6 players. In addition to that, they have confirmed the option to create clans, which can share a customized space, and all the emphasis on playing with other players that the franchise has always showcased.

But the most important question is: when is Destiny: Rising coming out? We are afraid we cannot answer that yet. On their website, you can register for access to a closed alpha starting on November 1st, to try it before anyone else. However, there’s a catch. You can only do so if you live in the US or Canada. The rest of us will have to wait until the game has an official release date, probably sometime in 2025, for the platforms it has been confirmed for: Android and iOS.

Bungie is not in its best situation. In addition to several large-scale scandals, it seems they have been losing a lot of money for some time now. That doesn’t take away from the fact that Destiny 2 is in one of its sweetest moments. And on the horizon, it seems they have a secured future with the return of the legendary Marathon, this time in the form of an extraction shooter. We now know the first relevant details about it.

Several different sources have been talking to The Game Post about this game, clarifying some aspects about the first product of the relationship between Sony and Bungie. Perhaps the most unexpected thing is that, like the two service games that Sony has already published, Marathon will not be free-to-play. It will be a paid game that will cost 40 euros.

Getting into what interests us the most, one of The Game Post’s sources has been able to provide some information about the state of the game and what we can expect from it. According to this person, Marathon will follow the class structure of games like Escape from Tarkov, but with a Bungie-style twist. Additionally, they already have two maps completed in a fully playable state. One of them is aboard the Marathon ship and the other in an abandoned colony on an alien planet.

All this fits with what we already know about the game. Having seen nothing more than a trailer, the information we have so far is that it will be released for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and that it will be an extraction shooter. Additionally, its release plan was for 2024 until a delay made its release date completely indefinite at the time of writing. This would lend credibility to the fact that they have at least two maps already in a fully playable state.

After the failure of Concord and the cancellation of more than half of its free-to-play game projects, the general feeling is that Marathon is Sony’s big bet for this type of game. Despite the resounding success of Helldivers 2, it does not seem that this shift towards online component games has notably worked for the Japanese company. That is why we will be attentive to what happens with Marathon and Bungie. Because it will probably mean a lot for the future of Sony.
