“Sonic Frontiers” is the most challenging Sonic game in history according to fans

Sonic Frontiers has the dubious honor of being considered the most difficult game in the Sonic franchise, for all the wrong reasons, according to its fans.

Debates about difficulty in video games are not usually resolved easily. We do not intend to be the ones to open that discussion. Nevertheless, friction exists; friction creates difficulty, and that is something we must consider. There are difficult games. There are easy games. And within the same franchise, there are games that are more challenging than others. It is also true that over time, games have become easier. What we did not expect is that the most difficult game in a franchise would be released after 32 years of history.

“Sonic Frontiers” is the latest Sonic game, released on November 8, 2022. With good reviews and a warm reception from the audience, it is the best-received Sonic game developed by the Sonic Team since SEGA stopped producing consoles. This achievement is notable on its own, and it’s further enhanced by the post-launch care given to the game, with up to three free updates in the form of DLCs.

The latest of these free DLCs was released a few days ago and is called “The Final Horizon.” Adding new missions, fresh story content, and the opportunity to play for the first time as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy, each with their own powers and abilities, it’s a massive DLC that breathes entirely new life into the game. But that’s not what’s drawing the most attention to the game. It’s the fact that many players are complaining that this DLC is the most challenging Sonic game in history.

With a GameFAQs forum page in the Sonic Frontiers subforum titled “this DLC is too difficult” spanning twelve pages, along with dozens of comments on social media, these remarks shouldn’t surprise us. Not when the difficulty level is indeed much higher than one might expect.

How difficult is it? Sections that require perfect jumps, a final sequence featuring end bosses capable of defeating Sonic with a single hit, and a complete absence of save points between them. This makes the experience of this DLC extremely frustrating for some players. It prompts us to wonder if it’s genuinely a very hard game or simply one with poorly balanced friction.

Dungeons & Dragons comes to Minecraft in the form of DLC

Minecraft is going to have a new Dungeons & Dragons themed DLC that will include a lot of material with which to enjoy new adventures.

Minecraft is a game that never runs out of steam. It is in its DNA. Its grace is that it wouldn’t matter if its developers never do anything with it, the community would continue to keep it alive. It is a game that never runs out of steam, because its definition is to do whatever you want with it. But, moreover, its developers are far from abandoning it to its fate. As its next DLC proves.

Minecraft DOWNLOAD

If after Baldur’s Gate 3 you need more similar experiences, Minecraft has you covered. That’s because, in collaboration with Everbloom Games and Wizards of the Coast, they’re releasing a Dungeons & Dragons-themed Minecraft DLC.

This DLC will not only include what you would expect, such as new scenarios and monsters, but also a new set of role-playing mechanics such as class systems, features and dice-based combat that seek to capture the true Dungeons & Dragons experience. Something that will also include a more complex and elaborate soundtrack than is common in Minecraft, which will change organically as we change scenarios, and a story that will start as a buddy movie to go into closer to the epic grounds as it progresses. Something that will bring it closer to the experience of playing a classic role-playing game.

In any case, the claim is that the game is still Minecraft. Not a Dungeons & Dragons sim. This DLC is not going to be a role-playing game within Minecraft, but aims to offer key elements that allow to shape the specific experience of Dungeons & Dragons within Minecraft that each player wants within the game itself. Which is precisely what makes Minecraft special. What makes its community of it. Its infinite possibilities. Make the game your own.

If all this catches your attention, this DLC is coming to the Minecraft Marketplace on September 26.

Final Fantasy XVI has some news for us: all of them are paid, and only one will make your morning happier

Naoki Yoshida has confirmed new information about Final Fantasy XVI, ensuring that the game will continue to receive content.

No Final Fantasy game is truly finished once it hits store shelves. Between re-releases, DLCs, expansions, new versions, and new stories, there isn’t a single game in the franchise that hasn’t had at least some form of update or enhancement from its original release. Of course, Final Fantasy XVI is no exception, and as such, we now have some news about it. Only one of them is unquestionably positive.

During the recent PAX West 2023, held from September 1st to 4th, there was a conference where Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida spoke. In that conference, he confirmed several things about the game’s future, including that it will have two paid DLCs.

Ensuring that the studio has been attentive to player feedback, the idea is for people to be able to spend more time in Valisthea, the game world of Final Fantasy XVI. However, we still don’t know much about these DLCs, as Yoshida himself has confirmed that he hopes to share more about the DLC before the end of the year.

On the positive side, he also announced that a free update would be released shortly after the conference. Modifying aspects of the arcade mode, fixing numerous bugs, and addressing some cosmetic issues, they continue to gradually improve the game.

This announcement helps with the big reveal that Yoshida made. As we already knew, he confirmed that Final Fantasy XVI’s exclusivity is only for six months, and the production of the PC version is already underway. While there are no specific dates yet, he hopes to share more information before the end of the year. This gives us hope for the future of this game, which may have disappointed some at launch but still promises to become a great game.

Clues Abound: Enthusiasts Decode New Pokémon for Hints About Upcoming Franchise Game

The Pokémon Presents didn’t show off any new titles for the main series, but fans have found clues as to what their next game may be.

The Pokémon Presents event was filled with minor announcements, lacking any major reveals. This is understandable as it took place in August, where significant breakthroughs weren’t anticipated. They unveiled animation series, discussed the upcoming Pokémon World Championship, and revealed DLCs for the latest main games. However, beyond that, there was no noteworthy revelation. But that doesn’t mean fans haven’t searched for reasons to get excited. As the conspiracy theorists well know, those who seek causal connections tend to find them. A group of fans believe that during the Presents event, a clue was dropped hinting at the next Pokémon game that Nintendo will be launching.

Among the things showcased during the Pokémon Presents was a new Pokémon called Archaludon, a new evolution of the Pokémon Duraludon. The unique aspect is that Duraludon, first introduced in Sword and Shield, resembles a skyscraper, and its evolution resembles a modern bridge. The evolution carries a certain coherence, but it has a distinct characteristic that hasn’t gone unnoticed: it resembles a specific bridge from the world of Pokémon. Specifically, it resembles the Skyarrow Bridge, the main bridge in the Unova region, where Pokémon Black and White take place.

This has set off all kinds of alarms, leading players to speculate that the next Pokémon game might be a remake of the Black and White entries. This notion also makes sense. Remakes of Pokémon Black and White are the next games expected to be released within the traditional RPG series, and it’s actually quite common for the franchise’s games to drop subtle hints in previous titles before their official announcement.

Of course, the references don’t end there. One of the trainers showcased in the new trailer is named Drayton, a Dragon-type trainer, who could very well be related to Draygon, a Dragon-type gym leader from Pokémon Black. This connection isn’t far-fetched, given the similarity in names and the affinity for Dragon-type Pokémon.

In any case, we still don’t know what the future holds for the franchise. However, all signs point towards an upcoming remake of Pokémon Black and White on the horizon, rather than a new main series Pokémon game or a new Pokémon Legends title in the near future.

Unforgettable Gaming Experience Comes Alive in Anime Form: 2018’s Must-Play Game Gets Animated

Dead Cells is one of the best video games of 2018 and now it is going to receive an anime, in addition to the promise of more content for several more years.

Dead Cells is a game that you may not know, but it is one of the best video games of 2018. This action and platform roguelite has been progressively updated over the years, making what was originally an excellent game has become, based on updates and DLCs, one of the most important indie games of its genre. That’s why we shouldn’t be surprised by the news that the game is going to have an adaptation in the form of an animated series.

Dead Cells DOWNLOAD

Announced for sometime in 2024, with animation studio Bobbypills handling it, this will be a work produced by the original game’s own studio, Motion Twin, and co-produced by Animation Digital Network. With ten episodes of seven minutes each, the story will take place on a cursed island, once a prison, where the protagonist, a man with a head that is a flaming eye, will have to kill El Rey to end the curse.

While it will initially be released exclusively in France, it will later have a world premiere. As big fans of Dead Cells that we are, we can’t wait to see what comes out of this adaptation. And in the meantime, we can enjoy their latest DLC, Return to Castlevania, where they introduce multiple elements of the Castlevania franchise into the game. Because if Dead Cells is something, it is inexhaustible. Something that is also demonstrated by the fact that it has sold ten million copies in these five years, has been ported to all current consoles and mobile devices, and also, they are not going to leave us hanging soon: they have confirmed that they plan to continue developing content for the game, at least, for another two or three years. Something that, if the animated series works, we are not surprised that it will end up becoming more years than we can imagine.

The DLCs are a scam (and the players have assumed it)

Yes, of course I don’t mind if you sell me the game halfway. No, of course, an unpublished story, a map and a dress. Of course I want to pay even more. Just missing.

Imagine that tomorrow you go to buy bread and the baker, who has always given you the classic loaf, this time gives you a crust without crumb and tells you that this is a new sales strategy: if you want the crumb you have to pay for it separately. It’s not necessary to enjoy the food, right? Well, that’s basically what we gamers have assumed with DLC. Yeah, of course I don’t mind if you sell me the game half-assed. No, sure, an unreleased story, a map and a dress. Of course I want to pay even more. That’s all it would take.

Steam DOWNLOAD

Quarter and half gameplay

It’s said that the game that started the DLC ban (even though PC gamers already knew what it was like to have half-baked games with Expansion Packs) was ‘Total Annihilation’ in 1997 with free updates and new maps. Obviously, that wasn’t going to last forever. Soon, even the Nintendo DS would have downloadable levels for ‘Professor Layton’ or ‘Picross’. And now we live in a world where we are perfectly aware that paying 60 euros for a game is really just the beginning.

That video game companies see us as mere cows to be milked for all our milk is clear. That we have accepted as a positive symptom systems to do it to us as the Season Pass is like to ask ourselves things. Mainly, why all this content is not directly in the game? For example, ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’ on Switch. Yes, of course I appreciate having 48 additional tracks to those I already had on Wii U: what I do not know is why they were not already included as standard.

At least Mario and his friends get quality content. Imagine being a big fan of ‘Oblivion’ and ending up paying for the famous horse armor (which cost two and a half euros, no less), or being the best at playing ‘Madden 2010’ and paying to get a new difficulty level. If you are one of those who pay money to get new skins, don’t you remember that in ‘Street Fighter III: Third Strike’ they made you take out your wallet to be able to… change the color of your character’s clothes? If they do this kind of thing it’s because it works: no matter how much fans complain, the people responsible for ‘Asura’s Wrath’ will probably end up making gold with the idea of taking out the end of the game separately after giving them 7 euros. True Ending’, they called it. It takes a lot of guts.

Not just DLC

Downloadable content and Season Passes have become part of our lives so quickly that it seems we gamers even thank the companies for squeezing as much money out of us as they can. Yes, sure, a DLC for ‘Horizon’ or ‘The Witcher 3’ in which new areas of the map open up to us and the story gets bigger is not the same as a pack of lamps for ‘The Sims 3’, but the feeling is the same.

But on the other hand, if we jump through the hoops of microtransactions in mobile games, we can swallow in everything. “Pay to not wait”, “Pay to get more lives”, “Pay to spin the roulette”, “Pay to get new weapons”. Pay, like this, in general. Until we have reached the zen coexistence of ‘Marvel Snap’, in which leaving money is really only a possibility for the very eager, we have had to eat thousands of ‘Candy Crush’. Even Duolingo is sold as a game with microtransactions! Want to learn Italian? Then you have to pay the cashier.

The early access, the betas that you can play after you checkout, the skins and clothing packs… Game developers seem to have forgotten about creating complete experiences: why, if we are going to pay for them later? Let’s not forget that titles like ‘Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War’ have so much DLC that it is literally a bottomless pit that also differentiates between people who can afford the best weapon and those who cannot. Pay to be the best.

True, it feels good to be able to test a game before its official release, and to know that when you finish it there will be more adventures – even to be able to differentiate yourself from the rest in online mode with a costume you’ve paid for, or to use a card not yet released to the rest that destabilizes the game! And yet, there is something deeply wrong with all this, as if we were aware that not so long ago this would be considered selling an incomplete game or cheating. It’s the world of gaming today. Get your wallet out. We’ll talk later.

Joker, Terminator, Spawn, and more reportedly leaked for Mortal Kombat 11 DLC

Some pop culture legends are joining the fight.

Another day, another Mortal Kombat leak.

The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11 has been datamined, revealing some interesting guest characters for future DLC. In this Reddit post, user /u/LeoNatan lists out a series of strings, as well as a step-by-step process for anyone who’d like to verify that these lists actually exist in the code. The code has been confirmed to actually exist in the game, so unless the references to these new guest characters are red herrings, they are coming to MK11 in future DLC packs. Without further ado, here are the leaked characters:

Joker

joker mortal kombat 11

Batman’s archnemesis, the Joker, will be making his Mortal Kombat debut. While the Joker was featured both in Netherrealm’s Injustice series and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, this marks the first time the Clown Prince of Crime appears in a mainline Mortal Kombat game. With the Joker standalone movie coming later this year, it makes sense for publisher Warner Bros to promote the character, just as they promoted the “Suicide Squad” characters in Injustice 2.

Though Joker is known for his murderous and sadistic tendencies, it’s interesting that DC is allowing one of their characters, even Joker, to participate in the gory mayhem of Mortal Kombat, as Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe had significantly toned down gore and neutered fatalities. Still, Joker is a perfect fit for the Mortal Kombat universe, and I can’t wait to see what kind of insane fatalities that he’ll pull off.

Leaked dialogue:

Joker: “You know, you remind me of Bats.”

Terminator: “Who?”

Joker: “Just another jerk with no sense of humor.”

Joker: “You look like a hugger, bring it in!”

Spawn: “I’ll turn you inside-out ass-first, clown.”

Joker: “I love it when they talk dirty!”

Terminator

terminator leak mortal kombat 11

The Terminator, specifically the T-800 from “T2: Judgment Day,” blasts onto the scene in Mortal Kombat 11. The franchise is obviously no stranger to cyborgs, including fan favorites like Sektor and Cyrax, so Arnie should have no trouble fitting in. Like Joker, Terminator also has a movie coming later this year in “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Judging by some of the leaked dialogue, it’s clear the developers are diehard fans of the series, as well as other Arnold films. Fun fact: Kano’s eye laser and heart rip fatalities were originally inspired by the Terminator itself, so hopefully it can return the favor.

Leaked dialogue:

Terminator: Your guns and your cape, give them to me.

Spawn: You forgot to say please.

Terminator: F*** you, asshole.

Terminator: “Take me to Sarah Connor.”

Cassie Cage: “Aw can’t, gotta get to the choppa.”

Terminator: “Now.”

Spawn

spawn leak mortal kombat 11

Arguably the most-requested guest character in Mortal Kombat history, fans can finally rest easy that Spawn is coming. An icon of ’90s edgy independent comics, Spawn is one of the industry’s quintessential anti-heroes. Spawn is additionally getting a Jamie Foxx-led movie coming in the near future, though details are scarce as of now. Spawn’s demonic aesthetic and brutal powerset make him a natural fit for Mortal Kombat, and it’ll be fun to see his interactions with other hellspawn like Scorpion.

Leaked dialogue:

Cassie Cage: “Guns, magic, you can’t just choose?”

Spawn: “I go both ways.”

Cassie Cage: “That explains the fetish gear.”

Spawn: “You’ve been to other dimensions?”

Scorpion: “Each had its own injustices.”

Spawn: “Maybe that’s why my soul still burns.”

Ash Williams

ash williams mortal kombat 11 leak

Deadites beware: the boomstick wielding, chainsaw-armed buffoon Ash Williams has entered the fray. The semi-competent hero of the “Evil Dead” trilogy and its numerous spinoffs, Ash Williams uses his quick wit, unconventional weaponry, and “charm” to put undead baddies in their place. Ash has battled everyone from zombified Marvel heroes to Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, so he should be able to handle his own against Sub-Zero and company.

Leaked dialogue:

Ash: “Fancy leathers, who’s your tailor?”

Spawn: “How’d you like to wear that smile on your ass?”

Ash: “No thanks, I only wear American denim.”

Returning Mortal Kombat characters

Guest characters weren’t the only ones that leaked. Returning kombatants include the shape-shifting villain Shang Tsung, Native American sorcerer warrior Nightwolf, the ear-piercing Sindel, and the four-armed Sheeva. Curiously, the leak also mentions Fujin as a playable character. Fujin is a demi-god like Raiden, though he controls the wind. He debuted in the infamously awful spinoff Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as a boss before becoming playable in Mortal Kombat 4.

What’s new in Civilization 6: Gathering Storm

Discover how the planet will impact your game in Civ 6: Gathering Storm.

Civilization 6: Gathering StormGathering Storm is the second expansion (Rise and Fall being the first) for Civilization 6, the latest installment in Sid Meier’s classic turn-based strategy game. The DLC introduces “an active planet where geology and climatology present unique new challenges.” This adds a new dynamic to the game, but the DLC is more than just a weather add-on. There are new leaders, enhanced diplomacy, added content, and new functionalities that seek to integrate with and enhance the game as a whole.

What’s new in Civilization 6: Gathering Storm

Active World

Environmental roadblocks come in the form of flooding rivers, devastating typhoons, damaging droughts, and eventually global warming. The inclusion of these planetary threats adds a new dynamic between your civ and the map, and introduces a common ground to protect and fight over with other nations.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm volcano eruption
You founded the city of Pompeii ironically, didn’t you?

Even early decisions of where to settle will have a lasting impact throughout: Settle near a volcano and it may erupt and devastate anything you’ve built nearby – but volcanic soil is some of the best, and you could see your crop yield hit record highs! Settle near the edge of a continent and the sea is yours to command – but don’t be surprised if your land begins to disappear, swallowed up by rising sea levels later in the game!

Climate change will become a more serious threat to the planet as a whole as you approach the late game. Nations will consume resources like coal and oil to power their cities or military units, and the planet will start to show signs of wear and tear as the years go by. Climate change comes about in the form of increased storms, more severe flooding, and worst of all, vanishing coastal tiles. Districts close to the ocean may disappear if carbon emissions reach a peak threshold. Fortunately the problem will not be yours alone; Global Warming is an issue to be tackled both as a single faction and as a community of nations.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm World Climate
Tweak how frequently World Climate plays a part in the pre-game lobby.

Power and consumable resources

Resources are a double-edged sword in Civ 6. While they create carbon emissions that slowly wreak havoc on the planet’s climate, they will also dial your city yields up to 11. Strategic resources now include fuel sources such as coal, niter, or oil that can power your cities and mighty late-game units like artillery, tanks, fighters, or Giant Death Robots.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm Giant Death Robot
Did we mention the GDR can jump over mountains? It can do that.

You can build a power plant in a city that will utilize either coal or oil to spur industrial productivity to its maximum potential. Your more sophisticated buildings will not be able to perform at peak efficiency without these resources, and will work at less than half their normal yield if deprived. Similarly, units that rely on these resources will not be as effective in combat without them. If you’re feeling particularly gutsy, you can upgrade your coal and oil plants to nuclear, which will create very light carbon emissions. If you don’t regularly maintain these (a function under your cities project queue), a nuclear accident can devastate your city and surrounding districts with all the force of a nuclear bomb.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm nuclear fallout
Homer Simpson is out of a job.

Maintaining them sounds obvious, but once you have over a dozen cities, it may prove challenging to keep track of which ones need attention! Late in the game you can switch city power over to green energy such as hydroelectric dams, solar panels, or wind farms.

You might also consider building improvements to lessen and negate the adverse effects of natural disasters. Examples include the dam or flood barrier later in the game.

New leaders, civilizations, wonders, and units

Another of the biggest reasons to get Gathering Storm is the inclusion of eight additional nations and nine new leaders. These new figures offer a wide and unique range of units, alliances, buildings, and play styles to explore, adding a variety of new color and reactive gameplay to the experience. These new leaders are Dido of Phoenicia, Suleiman of the Ottomans, Kristina of Sweden, Mansa Musa of Mali, Pachacuti of the Inca, Laurier of Canada, Kupe of the Maori, Matthias of Hungary, and Eleanor of Aquitaine for both England and France. Play as the nomadic Maori, the wealthy Mali, or sea-faring Ottomans for a truly fresh experience in Civilization 6.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm Eleanor of Aquitane
Eleanor of Aquitaine is the first leader to rule two nations: England and France.

Gathering Storm also has new wonders both man-made and natural such as The Great Bath, the Chocolate Hills, the gold-granting Machu Picchu, or the Meenakshi Temple which provides free gurus to heal your other religious units.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm University of Sankore
The University of Sankore wonder grants extra science and faith as well as granting bonuses to both through domestic trade routes.

New units include the popular Giant Death Robot for late-game, and our new favorite, the Rock Band once you research the Cold War civic. Rock Bands are created through faith, and can be named and sent to other nations for huge boosts to tourism, economy, or even religious takeover through certain upgrades.

World Congress

The World Congress is another new feature added with Gathering Storm, and it allows for the nations of the planet to meet and discuss proposals and resolutions to various issues such as trade, military, or who should earn points towards a diplomatic victory.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm World Congress
More Diplomatic Favor means you carry more weight on international decisions

Diplomatic favor works almost like a currency, earned through trade, city-state relationships, or by competing in world competitions. You can spend diplomatic favor as a bargaining chip when trading, to extract favors and promises from other leaders, or to help and hinder other nations in the World Congress. You could also stockpile your diplomatic favor and splurge on points towards a diplomatic victory.

New technologies and civics

Gathering Storm also adds content in the form of new techs and civics as you approach and enter the 21st century. New civics like Information Warfare create opportunities to integrate attack logistics, while others still later are actually randomized, encouraging you to improvise your strategy in this late-game phase, catering your decisions towards whatever new bonus you happen to stumble upon.

Civ 6 Gathering Storm new tech
A future technology with military benefit may change your endgame approach.

There’s also new improvements like canals, railroads, and mountain tunnels to provide new means of transportation and tactical maneuverability in combat, and scenarios like War Machine or The Black Death if you’re looking for a radically different (and typically shorter) Civ experience.

At its core, Gathering Storm adds a new player to the mix in the form of the living map. Decisions you make from settling to generating power to building new improvements all play a part in your civilization’s relationship with the sky above them and with the soil beneath their feet. Games in Gathering Storms are more multi-faceted than ever, and your ability to prepare for and recover from disasters will now play an additional role in your success as a leader. Are you ready to take on the challenge? Install Gathering Storm today, and lead your civilization to glory!

The 3 worst microtransaction schemes in video game history

Microtransactions can wreck a game. Here are the worst offenders in history.

For all of the internet outrage surrounding video games and its culture, perhaps the only thing that everyone agrees to hate is microtransactions. For those out of the loop, microtransactions are small purchases involving real money that give some sort of benefit or content in-game. These purchases often appear as “loot boxes” or some form of premium currency that is either impossible or incredibly inconvenient to earn in-game. Microtransactions have crept into every conceivable game genre and triple-A franchise. Their astronomical profitability makes publishers require that developers include them in their games.

Publishers after discovering the magic words “loot box”

While there are some big games that arguably do microtransactions right, such as Fortnite and Overwatch, publishers have continued to push the limit of gamers’ tolerance towards the prominence of in-game purchases. Here are some of the worst examples of microtransactions in gaming.

The worst microtransactions in video game history

A disturbance in the Force

EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 is by far the most high-profile recent case of microtransactions ruining a game. Pre-release anticipation for the game was incredibly high, as the game included content from multiple eras of “Star Wars” movies and seemed to have more depth to its gameplay. This hype quickly died down after release as players quickly realized that progression in the game’s online multiplayer was tied to randomized loot boxes. Unlocking the ability to play as iconic characters like Darth Vader required either dozens of hours of tedious, loot box-based grinding or shelling out real life money.

Additionally, many of the game’s most powerful weapons and abilities were locked behind loot boxes, giving players who purchased them en masse an advantage. Understandably, players were furious, and one of EA’s responses to the controversy became the most downvoted comment in Reddit history.

Card

Thankfully, EA eventually revamped the progression system and removed the ability to pay for game-altering content with real money. Instead, only cosmetic items can be purchased with real money, similar to Overwatch. Unfortunately for them and fans of the game, the damage was done. The reputation of the game and the number of active players were both hit hard by the controversy. Hopefully, EA has learned its lesson moving forward, as there is a great Star Wars game hidden beneath all of the greed.

Evolve succumbs to natural selection

In case you haven’t heard of Evolve, it’s an asymmetrical multiplayer shooter in which 4 players are hunters fighting against a player who takes control of a monster that evolves throughout the match. It was made by Turtle Rock Studios, developer of the acclaimed multiplayer zombie shooter Left 4 Dead. Sounds like an awesome concept right?

Unfortunately, this awesome game concept was brought down by scores of microtransactions. Described by Forbes as a”$60 free-to-play game”, Evolve was filled with a confusing and money-sucking array of microtransactions, DLC, special editions, and season passes. Word of mouth quickly spread about the game’s egregious use of microtransactions, and the player base plummeted. To salvage the game, publisher 2K revamped the game as free-to-play in 2016. While this brought some players back for a while, the player base remained small, and the game’s dedicated servers were shut down in September 2018.

The failure of Evolve was incredibly disappointing to many gamers, as it was a brand new IP with creative game concepts. It just goes to show that a great game can be ruined by greed.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War wanders, gets lost

It should be noted that most games plagued by microtransactions are multiplayer based, as players are incentivized to either gain advantages over others or get exclusive cosmetics for real money. WB Interactive made the bold choice of including microtransactions in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, a primarily single player game. Now why in the world would you want to buy microtransactions in a single player game? WB purposefully made grinding for endgame content so tedious that many players would become frustrated enough to simply throw money at the screen. Including microtransactions and loot boxes in a single player game proves that game design is being created around squeezing money out of games rather than being creative or fun. Eventually, WB removed microtransactions and loot boxes from the game. However, they did this right around the time EA was being slammed for Battlefront 2, so it’s safe to say that they did this simply to gain some positive press.

How do you feel about microtransactions? What’re the worst examples you’ve seen? What’s the most you’ve spent on a game? Let us know!
