Square Enix is widely recognized for its legacy in developing classic RPGs, highlighting iconic series such as Final Fantasy. Recently, the company has expanded its access to genre classics by including Legend of Mana and Trials of Mana on Xbox Game Pass, offering subscribers the opportunity to relive these nostalgic experiences.

The Magic of Retro Games

The remastered version of Legend of Mana retains its retro presentation, maintaining the visual style of its original release while updating graphics and interface elements. This title, originally released on the PlayStation, allows players to explore a world designed in their own way thanks to its episodic structure, which offers various routes and the possibility to create their own world map. However, its less guided nature can make progress difficult without an external resource, which is a characteristic feature of many RPGs from that era.

On the other hand, Trials of Mana has been completely transformed into a 3D style, preserving the original story but altering the presentation and gameplay. Its remake, released in 2020, features a class system that offers flexibility to players to upgrade their characters to advanced classes. This particularity adds a strategic level to combat, allowing for unique customization of the team.

Both titles, although different in focus, represent two valid approaches to reviving classic RPGs. While Trials of Mana stands as a modern reimagining, Legend of Mana remains true to its retro essence. With these additions, Square Enix not only celebrates its past but also makes it accessible to new generations of players.

The launch of FBC: Firebreak on June 17 has generated a lot of buzz in the gaming community, surpassing one million players in its first week. However, both the numbers on PC and user experiences have left much to be desired. The new title from Remedy Entertainment, a cooperative FPS inspired by Left 4 Dead 2 and set in the universes of Control and Alan Wake, has performed notably well on console platforms, especially through subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus Extra.

Difficult to stay

Despite its impressive initial figures, the game faces significant challenges in player retention, with fewer than 140 active users on PC, according to data from SteamDB. This low number has raised concerns, as many players report difficulties in finding matches, which could threaten the game’s longevity.

Remedy has acknowledged that there is much work ahead to improve the gaming experience and increase user satisfaction. The company has shared on social media its gratitude for the community’s support, while emphasizing its commitment to making substantial improvements to the game. We know there is still a lot of work to be done, and we are more motivated than ever, expressed the Finnish studio.

Although cross-platform play could be a point in its favor, the low player retention poses a dilemma that Remedy must address quickly. The company has hinted that it has new and exciting updates in the works, although only time will tell if these actions will give FBC: Firebreak a new boost. As such, the coming months will be crucial in defining the future of the title and its place within a genre that has seen a resurgence in the last decade.

The rise of video games has radically transformed the landscape of digital entertainment, but there is a notable exception in the realm of real-time strategy games: the Warcraft series. Originating on PC platforms, Warcraft has defined the RTS genre and influenced its evolution, despite its titles never being available on consoles. Nowadays, the games in the series are more accessible than ever thanks to their inclusion in Game Pass, allowing new players to explore these classics.

Be careful, it hooks you

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, although it was not the first real-time strategy game, established a model that continues to influence contemporary design. It introduced varied missions and a narrative approach that resembles modern experiences. Although it may seem clunky compared to current standards, this title reminds us of the importance of its contribution to the genre. For its part, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness improved artificial intelligence and usability, allowing its legacy to remain relevant even three decades after its release.

Warcraft III marked a new direction for the series, focusing its story on heroes and villains and directly connecting with the events of World of Warcraft. This evolution not only enriched the story but also introduced role-playing elements into the gameplay. The launch of Warcraft III: Reforged had a problematic start, but after multiple updates, it now offers a smoother experience closer to the original.

The remastered versions now available on Game Pass allow players to access these RTS classics more easily. While the original games still hold invaluable worth, these remasters could be the most accessible way to rediscover the rich history of the Warcraft series today.

In an unexpected turn for fans of the galactic saga, the video game Star Wars Battlefront 2 has seen a significant resurgence in its popularity. According to Steam Charts, the number of concurrent players reached a record of 27,896 on June 20, 2025, a notable increase compared to the mere thousand daily players it averaged before May of this year. This spike has generated excitement and speculation within the community.

It’s never too late if the game is good

The reasons behind this increase in participation are multiple. The inclusion of the full game edition in Xbox Game Pass has made it easier for new players to access, thus boosting its user base. Additionally, the conclusion of the exciting Andor series, along with the 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith, has revitalized interest in the Star Wars universe. Likewise, the Star Wars themed season in Fortnite has helped attract many fans, allowing Battlefront 2 to resonate once again within the community.

It is important to remember that Battlefront 2, released by Electronic Arts in 2017, received severe criticism at the beginning of its cycle, but DICE worked hard on patches and updates, achieving what many consider a salvation of the game for 2020. Since then, it has been a popular choice for those looking for a multiplayer experience in the Star Wars universe, being especially appealing to those who want to relive the action with the Clone Troopers.

This recent increase in the player base has also fueled rumors about the potential development of a third installment. Fans dream of a continuation that explores new stories within the vast Star Wars universe, including plots from series like Andor and The Mandalorian. Although there is no official confirmation, many speculate that a Battlefront 3 could be the next logical step in this beloved franchise.

Diablo 4 continues to generate controversy, this time over the season 8 reward system

The new Reliquary system, introduced in Season 8 of Diablo 4, has generated controversy among players due to its confusing structure and the perception that it offers fewer rewards than the old battle pass system. This change has led to an active debate in the community, especially on platforms like Reddit, where players have expressed their frustration over the lack of clarity in the rewards and the complicated categorization of them.

It is possible to end up losing money due to the system

Players have the option to earn tokens in free matches, but they are also offered the possibility to purchase rewards using Platinum, the game’s premium currency. This design has raised complaints about the accidental spending of real money, as the interface allows users to make purchases without proper confirmation. A mistake in controlling their purchase could lead to an immediate loss of up to 7 euros, increasing criticism about the usability of the system.

Additionally, the purchase model for Reliquaries has been examined in more detail. Players can acquire individual Reliquaries for 500 Platinum or a Battle Pass Bundle that promises savings by offering all three for 1,000 Platinum. However, a prior purchase of one of the Reliquaries individually may prevent access to the bundle and force players to spend more on additional purchases. On the other hand, the Deluxe Battle Pass Bundle, which costs almost three times that of the standard, has received similar criticism for offering rewards that do not justify its high price.

Blizzard has acknowledged the “overwhelming feedback” and has committed to improving the system in future seasons, although they have confirmed that no significant changes will be made in Season 9. In their roadmap for 2025, they have also announced the introduction of new features, such as the ability to create spells and a second expansion planned for 2026.

Xbox Game Pass has established itself as one of the most relevant subscriptions in the video game industry, offering its users access to over 400 titles. This service has transformed the way millions of players consume video games, but not everyone in the developer community thinks its impact is entirely positive.

Is it sustainable for developers in the long term?

In a recent interview, Alex Hutchinson, director of Revenge of the Savage Planet, expressed his concerns about the Xbox Game Pass subscription model. Although his game was launched on the service and has seen notable traffic from it, Hutchinson argues that this model could devalue content and affect independent developers in the long run. “What we’ve seen is that content has been devalued and that people are less willing to pay for things,” he stated, adding that this could result in less game creation and the risk of bankruptcy for many small studios.

Among the immediate benefits that Game Pass offers, Hutchinson mentioned Microsoft’s upfront payment for including their game in the service, as well as increased visibility. However, he suggested that it would be more appropriate to allow games to be available on subscription services only one year after their release, similar to what happens in the film industry after a movie has been shown on the big screen.

Despite his reservations, Hutchinson also acknowledged that Microsoft has been an “incredible partner” and that the financial incentive for being part of Game Pass is considerable. Despite the criticism, there are success stories, such as Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered, which have sold well on the service at a reduced price and have reached millions of copies sold. This model raises a necessary debate about the future of the industry and the sustainability of independent studios in the era of streaming and subscriptions.

Super Meat Boy will have a new installment, adding a new dimension to its gameplay

During the Xbox Summer Showcase of 2025, Team Meat surprised fans by announcing the return of their iconic platformer game, Super Meat Boy, this time in a three-dimensional format titled Super Meat Boy 3D. This new approach promises not only new challenges but also a vibrant visual experience in isometric perspective, reminiscent of the popular Super Mario 3D World series.

A strong inspiration from Nintendo games… again

The announcement trailer begins with an animated sequence that includes a fun nod to Mario games, featuring a green pipe, before showing the protagonist, Meat Boy, in action. The first revealed gameplay highlights an environment filled with dangers including spikes and circular saws, elements that suggest a return to the challenging difficulty that characterized previous titles in the series.

One of the most notable features of Super Meat Boy 3D is the protagonist’s ability to create clones of himself, a mechanic that is reminiscent of the cherry item in Super Mario 3D World. This innovation will surely add a new layer of strategy and complexity to the game’s missions and levels.

Super Meat Boy 3D is the result of the collaboration between Team Meat, Sluggerfly, and Head Up, marking a new chapter for the series after Super Meat Boy Forever, released in 2020, which received mixed reviews. This new title is scheduled for release in early 2026 and will be available on platforms such as Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, through Xbox PC, Steam, and Epic Games Store. Additionally, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will be able to enjoy it from its first day of release.

The game ‘Crypt Custodian’ has arrived in June on Xbox Game Pass to surprise fans of action RPGs, combining an appealing aesthetic with immersive gameplay. Developed as a Metroidvania experience, the title allows players to take on the role of Pluto, a cat who, after dying in an accident, finds himself in the afterlife. However, in a twist of unfortunate events, he becomes the janitor of the underworld after committing an act that condemns him to this eternal labor.

Sword vs Broom

The central mechanics of ‘Crypt Custodian’ revolve around a unique combat system where, instead of wielding a sword, players use a broom to overcome various obstacles, defeat enemies, and face powerful bosses. As they explore different areas, they will unlock abilities that enrich the combat experience. As they progress, they will gain upgrades that go beyond simple stat boosts, allowing for tactical combinations to adapt to different play styles.

Despite the fact that ‘Crypt Custodian’ follows the classic Metroidvania formula, where players explore open areas and unlock new abilities, it does so exceptionally well. The relaxing soundtrack and vibrant artistic style help maintain a light tone, contrasting with the dark premise. These features make the game an enjoyable experience, even despite its grim background.

However, the title does not take risks in innovating its structure, which could dishearten those looking for freshness in the genre. Still, the charm of the game and its satisfying broom-based combat system make it a recommendable option for Metroidvania fans.

The creators of Sifu are moving from kung-fu to football with a game that promises to be the Oliver and Benji of video games

Sloclap, known for its work on games like Absolver and Sifu, is about to make a significant turn with the announcement of its upcoming title: Rematch, an online multiplayer football game that promises to revolutionize the way the king of sports is played. Scheduled for an official release on June 19, 2025, players who opt for the Pro and Elite versions will be able to access the game three days earlier, on June 16. The final beta of Rematch will begin on May 28, 2025, and will be available until May 31, allowing a wide audience to experience the game before its official launch.

A game that could very well compete with FIFA

Rematch offers an arcade soccer experience without the usual restrictions, such as fixed positions or detailed statistics. In this game, players control a single character in a five-on-five format, which means that skill and creativity will be crucial to achieving victory. The concepts of fouls and offside will be eliminated, promising smooth and fast gameplay.

The game will be available on Steam and the Xbox store, with access for Xbox Game Pass subscribers from day one. With a base cost of €24.99 for the standard edition, players will also be able to purchase enhanced versions for €34.99 and €44.99, which include early access and additional content. The recommended specifications require an RTX 3050 graphics card and an Intel Core i5-11600k processor, making the title accessible to a wide range of players.

Although Sloclap is known for its focus on combat, Rematch focuses on football simulation and will use a battle system called Captain’s Pass”which includes seasonal content. Many details about this system are still unknown, leading to some speculation about its content and costs. With this new direction, Rematch could set a new standard for online football games.

Sony believes that Xbox Game Pass could be negative for the medium to long term

Shuhei Yoshida, former head of PlayStation and currently an ambassador for independent games at Sony, has expressed his concern about the growth of subscription models in the video game industry. During a recent interview at Gamescom LATAM, Yoshida emphasized that while these services can be beneficial under certain conditions, their normalization could limit creative diversity and hinder the development of new games.

PlayStation Plus will not imitate this model

The executive praised the PlayStation Plus strategy, highlighting its ability to preserve the initial value of games. According to Yoshida, this approach avoids overpromising and allows major releases to be reserved for traditional platforms before being integrated into the subscription service, thus avoiding the risk of saturating the market with titles that do not meet player expectations.

However, Yoshida warned that if the subscription model becomes the only way to access video games, this could be “really dangerous.” In his opinion, this could restrict the variety of available proposals and give large companies control over what types of games can be developed, which could stifle the creativity of small studios and, therefore, innovation in the industry.

Despite his reservations about the Xbox Game Pass proposal, Yoshida acknowledged Microsoft’s technical effort in areas such as backward compatibility, noting that they have done remarkable engineering work. Still, he emphasized that a healthy ecosystem must allow for the proliferation of new ideas coming from emerging developers, calling for a balance in the game offerings that benefits the entire community.
