India’s government wants to read your WhatsApp messages

The Indian government wants WhatsApp messages to be linked to users.

whatsapp

If you’re a WhatsApp user in India, your messages might be compromised.

Two petitioners have requested India’s high court to link WhatsApp users’ accounts with their Aadhaar. Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique biometric identity number that everyone in India has to identify them. Aadhaar is pretty controversial in India as some believe it allows the government to track their every move.

Why should I care?

government surveillance

The petitioners want WhatsApp users linked to their Aadhaar so that users who cyberbully or defame other users can be held accountable. Linking users to their Aadhaar would significantly weaken WhatsApp’s encryption.

Users are worried that weakening WhatsApp’s encryption would cause a domino effect that would extend to other apps as well. The mindset is if this can happen to WhatsApp, one of the most popular apps in the country, it can happen to any app.

WhatsApp is supposed to be a place for private conversations, but adding this link would mean that every message has a record associated with you and your phone number.

Why is this happening and what is WhatsApp doing?

Fake news

The problem is that the petitioners aren’t the only ones fighting for this change in WhatsApp, the government of India is trying to weaken its encryption as well.

India’s IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that traceability will be WhatsApp’s job. The government has tried to get WhatsApp to allow messages to get traced back to users, but has been denied each time. With the support of the petitioners, this time the Indian government might be too loud for WhatsApp to ignore.

Much of this was sparked by an event last year when a hoax was spread through WhatsApp about child abductors running rampant in India. This lead to several people being lynched in the chaos. People who helped spread the hoax could have potentially been tracked down and prosecuted if they were linked to their Aadhaar.

WhatsApp has responded to the issue and is working to fight misinformation from spreading throughout the app. Recently, they unveiled a feature that would tell users if a message was forwarded more than five times. The idea is that if a message was forwarded more than five times, it is probably being sent on a massive scale, and maybe with malicious intent.

What’s going to happen?

First off, it is important to note that this is not necessarily an India-only issue. Weakening WhatsApp’s encryption could potentially have consequences for users in other countries.

WhatsApp has to take every user in every country into consideration before making this decision. They also have to consider the users in India that don’t want them to make this change. Whether WhatsApp and the Indian government reach a compromise is something we will have to wait to see. Until then, if you’re a WhatsApp user, continue to report users that spread misinformation on the app.

As we said, Swiggy is very popular in India. Unfortunately, you can’t use the app in the U.S. For that, you’ll need to stick with apps like Grubhub.

Speaking of Grubhub, Swiggy is a lot like it if you’re familiar with it. Like Grubhub, Swiggy finds restaurants in your area and will have food from there delivered to you for a small fee.

7

If you’re wondering if Swiggy will deliver to you, check the list on their website.

When you place your first order on Swiggy, you get a 50% off discount, so make sure you take advantage of that.

There are plenty of deals like this that pop-up, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. There’s no reason why you should pay more than you have to for good butter chicken.

Swiggy

Once you fill your cart with the food you like, enter your address, payment information, and the necessary delivery instructions. Delivery instructions typically include if you need the driver to bring plastic utensils, napkins, or if you need them to call upon arriving. Once your food arrives, it is time to chow down.

If you’re familiar with the clothing app Myntra, Swiggy is to food what Myntra is to clothing.

If you make a profile with Swiggy, you can store your address and payment information so you don’t need to enter it every single time you place an order.

Hopefully, Swiggy will help you find the best food around. Make sure you let us know what you got for your first order and how it tasted!

New WhatsApp feature will fight misinformation

This new feature will tell you if a message was forwarded more than five times.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature in their ever-growing fight against misinformation.

If a message is forwarded more than five times, the message will come with a double arrow next to it.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp announced the new feature in a recent blog post. The new feature will be available on the app on both iOS and Android.

Basically, if you see a message that says it was forwarded multiple times, there’s a chance that it’s a spam message, and you should report the user. Obviously, if a trusted friend sent you an invitation and you see the double arrow, it can probably be trusted. Then again, that person might as well make a group message or a Facebook event.

Last year, WhatsApp fell into some hot water after people fell for a rumor they heard on WhatsApp, and lynched people they thought were child abductors.

Since then, WhatsApp developers have promised to do more to stop the spread of misinformation on the app. This new feature is definitely a step in the right direction. Although it still falls on the user to determine whether or not a message is malicious, the double arrow will be a nice warning sign.

‘The Irishman’ trailer shows why Scorsese is the king of gangster movies

“The Irishman” chronicles the demise of Jimmy Hoffa and the man who claims to have killed him.

Pacino

The trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new movie “The Irishman” is finally here, and it looks incredible

As you can tell, this is one star-studded cast. You got Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Harvey Keitel, and the triumphant return of Joe Pesci! Also, Italian comedians Sebastian Maniscalco and Ray Romano even have roles in this movie!

The background

Hoffa

The movie revolves around De Niro as Frank Sheeran as he chronicles his involvement in Jimmy Hoffa’s ( Al Pacino) death and disappearance. The movie is based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. Before he died, Sheeran told Brandt about his involvement with Jimmy Hoffa. In case you didn’t know, Hoffa was the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and he mysteriously went missing in 1975. Although he was declared dead after being missing for years, a body has never been found. According to the book, the union leader’s relationship with the mafia resulted in his death.

After not appearing in a movie in nearly five years, Joe Pesci is returning to film as Russell Bufalino, the real-life head of the Bufalino Crime Family.

Hoffa had hired Sheeran as a hitman, and for muscle to help in the fight against rival unions. Bufalino put Hoffa in touch with Sheeran. The phrase “I Heard You Paint Houses,” was the password Hoffa said to Sheeran to let him know that he needed his hitman services.

Why do they look so young?

The Irishman

If you didn’t notice, many of these legendary actors look much younger in several scenes in this movie than they do in real life. The filmmakers used CGI to de-age the actors so they can appear 30 years younger.

It is a little upsetting that the filmmakers are resorting to using CGI rather than make-up to de-age their actors. If you remember, more than 10 years ago, the film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” shocked the world with the incredible make-up used to change the ages of the actors.

The CGI effect still looks pretty good, and we’re guessing that since several of the stars in this film are pushing 80, they didn’t want to be stuck in a make-up chair for hours.

Wrapping up

“The Irishman” is truly a passion project for Scorsese, and there is already a boatload of Oscar buzz around it already.

Scorsese has made several incredible organized crime movies throughout the ages including “GoodFellas,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Departed.” Scorsese does a phenomenal job of taking larger-than-life criminals and making them both human and vulnerable.

The movie is set to come out on Netflix this fall, and will also have a limited release in select theaters.

Siri is listening in on your private conversations

Siri has recorded drug deals, doctor visits, and even sexual activity!

Siri

It’s looking like Siri is one bad apple.

People working for Apple have heard users talking about confidential medical info, buying drugs, and even having sex, according to an article from The Guardian.

How are they hearing this? They’re doing it through Siri!

Contractors hired by Apple are paid to listen to user recordings. Their job is to grade the responses that Siri is giving to determine if it is functioning properly. The problem is that Siri sometimes picks up on something inappropriate, and has been known to wake and record unintentionally.

These contractors are working to improve Siri’s human understanding so that it only wakes when it is supposed to wake up. They’re also working to make sure Siri actually says something of value when you ask it a question.

When you hear about issues like this, the first thing that comes to mind is probably all of the issues with Amazon’s Alexa listening in on users. Unfortunately, Siri is just as guilty as Alexa.

Should I be worried?

This information came from a whistleblower who worked for one of these contracting firms. They chose to remain anonymous but came forward as they thought the lack of disclosure from Apple was so egregious.

In a statement to the Guardian, Apple said that the recordings are not tied to a user’s Apple ID.  However, according to the whistleblower, the recordings typically come with location information, contact information, and app data.

What should I do if I have an iPhone?

We’re not going to act like there aren’t also security issues or concerns with Android.

There’s no need to throw your iPhone in the nearest blender. However, you might want to disable Siri from listening in on you. On your iPhone, go to Settings and choose “Siri & Search.” From here, if you tell Siri to stop listening and if you remove the option to “Press Home for Siri,” you’ll get the option to turn it off altogether.

At Apple’s recent WWDC, the company gave users tons of information in a huge privacy push that they are making. It looks like the company really needs to put more effort into how Siri works, and what she listens to without your knowledge.

3 tricks to control the time you spend on WhatsApp and other apps

Are you a smartphone addict? Here’s the cure!

Has anyone ever told you that you spend way too much time on WhatsApp?

What about Facebook? Twitter? Instagram?

Maybe you just spend too much time fiddling around on your phone in general.

If you think so, we got a secret for you: you’re most likely right. Fear not! There is a cure for your app addiction. We found three different methods for you to try!

Turn off notifications

It’s a simple method, but it can work!

Disable each and every one of your notifications to keep you from being disturbed. Obviously, you shouldn’t remove notifications for ALL of your messaging services in case there’s an emergency.

It is proven that when you unlock your phone in response to a notification, you’re likely to open up other apps and waste more time on your phone.

To deactivate notifications in WhatsApp, go to “Settings” and then “Notifications. ” From there, uncheck the corresponding boxes and your phone will stop receiving alerts. This is also a great way to help conserve your data!

Set specific hours

Again, it sounds simple enough, but if you only allow yourself to use apps during certian hours of the day, you will find yourself using them less and less.

If you need to use WhatsApp for work, only using it during business hours can help out. Or, if you use it to talk to your friends and family after work, you can only all yourself to use it after dinner time.

Once you have a set schedule of use for all of your apps, your time management skills will get much sharper.

Quality Time

Having a smartphone addiction is nothing to be ashamed about. Just like if you have a substance abuse addiction, there is an app to help you with your app addiction.

Are you worried if you are too hooked on your Android? How much time do you invest in Facebook Messenger? What about in Candy Crush? Do not fear: here is Quality Time to help you … or to just confirm that you should divorce your smartphone.

Quality Time helps you see just how much time you’re devoting to using all of your apps. There is also an option to “take a break.” This means that you cannot use any apps while you take a break.

With this application, we can also control how many times we unlock our smartphone every day.

Finally, we can tell our phone that we do not want to receive notifications, that calls are blocked (at bedtime, for example) or restrict some apps.

New Tinder feature aimed to protect LGBTQ users

Tinder will hide LGBTQ user profiles when they visit countries that outlaw same-sex relationships.

Tinder

This new feature from Tinder could help you out if you’re swiping while on vacation.

Tinder will soon alert their LGBTQ users if they are using the app while in a country that criminalizes same-sex relationships. This new feature is called Traveler Alert, and it is expected to roll out in a future update, according to an announcement from Tinder.

Unfortunately, police in these countries often use dating apps like Tinder to find same-sex couples and prosecute them, according to Tinder. This move will hopefully save LGBTQ users from this cruel fate.

Along with alerting users, Tinder will automatically remove their profile from the app while they are in the country. However, users will be able to make their profiles visible if they wish to take the risk.

(function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id))return;js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=’https://embed.playbuzz.com/sdk.js’;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}(document,’script’,’playbuzz-sdk’));

Tinder now allows users to identify their sexual preferences by choosing three of nine categories. They are:
  •  Straight
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Demisexual
  • Pansexual
  • Queer
  • Questioning

These new moves from Tinder are making the app much safer for LGBTQ users, and much for inviting as well.

In the wild world of dating, you are taking enough of a risk just by putting yourself out there, so it’s a good thing that Tinder is putting in more precautions to keep you safe.

‘Zombieland: Double-Tap’ trailer: the gang’s all here

Columbus, Tallahassee, and Wichita set off to rescue Little Rock in “Zombieland: Double-Tap!”

Zombieland

We’ve waited 10 years for this trailer, and it was totally worth it!

Sony has released the first trailer for “Zombieland: Double-Tap,” and we are beyond excited.

The movie brings back the four classic characters from the original movie: Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock. However, the trailer also gave us a whole bunch of new character to join the fray!

New and old faces

Fans rejoice, Bill Murray is supposed to make another cameo appearance in “Zombieland: Double Tap.” Even better, Dan Aykroyd is supposed to join him. Most fans agree that Murray’s scene from the first film was the best part of the whole movie:

VIDEO IS NSFW

Hopefully, Aykroyd won’t try to hawk any of his crazy Crystal Head Vodka in the flick:

One of the new characters is Tallahassee’s doppelganger played by Luke Wilson. The two share a comedic moment when Wilson’s character springs out of nowhere and tries to steal Tallahassee’s truck. Wilson’s character is also joined by the spitting image of Columbus, another new character played by Thomas Middleditch.

Zoey Deutch is playing a new character named Madison. She’s a little ditzy and seems to get hurt at every turn. She possibly might throw a wrench in Columbus’s and Wichita’s relationship, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Abigail Breslin’s character Little Rock has a new romantic interest in a pot-smoking college kid named Berkeley. The film’s main focus appears to be on Wichita, Columbus, and Tallahassee as they try to track down Little Rock, who ran away with Berkeley.

Rosario Dawson

Finally, Rosario Dawson is joining the fray as a new character named Nevada. She appears to be a gun-toting badass like Tallahassee and a possible love interest for him.

Wrapping up

Weirdly enough, the trailer did not show a lot of zombie-killing action. Most of the time, it just focused on the characters interacting with one another. To be honest, we’re not complaining.

Things like “The Walking Dead” have really made us grow tired of the brain-munching bozos.

It’s nice that the film looks like it is going to focus more on comedy and the characters rather than on zombie-killing. However, we hope there’s a scene at least as cool as this one:

VIDEO IS NSFW

Are you excited for this sequel? Let us know in the comments below! Until then, remember the cardinal rules: check the backseat, buckle your seatbelt, and, of course, double-tap.
