The twists of 'Stranger Things' that Netflix abandoned and that would have made it a better series

We’re never going to get rid of Stranger Things, are we? After the series was a huge hit on Netflix and its fifth season had so much merchandising (mostly food-related) that it reminded us of releases from the 90s, when that kind of strategy still worked, the streamer is bringing the kids out of the drawer again for its new series, Tales from ’85. This animated spin-off is entertaining, yes, but it has caused more than one headache for fans because it introduces a new character, Nikki, who allows them to create new weapons… Without the seasons of […]

We are never going to get rid of Stranger Things, right? After the series was a huge hit on Netflix and its fifth season had so much merchandising (mostly food-related) that it reminded us of releases from the 90s, when that kind of maneuver still worked, the streamer is bringing the kids back for its new series, Tales from ’85. This animated spin-off is entertaining, yes, but it has caused more than one headache for fans because it introduces a new character, Nikki, who allows them to create new weapons… Without any mention of this new team member in the live-action series seasons.

And, in fact, it is not the only plot that Stranger Things has left behind… which could have resulted in a better series. Do you want to embark on a journey to the Hawkins that could have been and wasn’t?

Eleven was going to die

Yes, as it sounds: in the original plans for season 1 of the series, Eleven was going to sacrifice herself for the greater good, and that was going to be her true ending. However, what the Duffer brothers did not expect was that the series would become the success it was... largely thanks to the character played by Millie Bobby Brown. No matter how they turned it, the series did not work without her, so they had to bring her back in season 2. In hindsight, and seeing everything that has happened with her character, wouldn’t it have been much more epic to let her die to save her new friends?

Hopper’s Strange Alliances

Surely you remember Alexei, the Russian scientist who drank slushies in season 3 and became one of the best things about that batch of episodes (until, now, he died with no chance of bringing him back). The writing team liked him so much that they thought there was a way to pay homage to him in the next season: to have, purely by coincidence, his father end up in the Russian prison alongside Hopper and join his group. Of course, it required a gigantic leap of faith from the audience and really wouldn’t have added anything to the plot, but, honestly… we’ve seen worse things in the last season.

I Will Kill My Mother’s Boyfriend

Let’s set the scene. Season 2, Bob (played by Sean Astin) is Joyce’s new boyfriend and everything seems to be going well between them… until a Demodog catches him off guard and takes him out, allowing him to have one last scene with his girlfriend. However, in the writers’ room, this was not what was originally proposed: taking advantage of the fact that Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer, they thought it would be more than curious, for the character’s evolution, that he would be the one to end up killing Bob, causing him even more trauma. As if he didn’t have enough!

Eleven almost killed his mother

In season 1, we met Eleven’s mother, Terry, but what we didn’t know is that in a few episodes later, it was planned for Eleven to end her life as a favor, after realizing she was in a loop from which she could never escape. After all, since they can communicate telepathically, it wouldn’t have been that difficult for the girl’s powers to end the life of the one who gave her life. However, for whatever reason (it would completely blur the character by turning her into a killer of innocents), they decided to set this plot aside. Does it make sense? Undoubtedly. Would it have led to a better Stranger Things? Also. But sometimes, it’s better to leave things as they are.

The first two seasons of the live-action One Piece have received praise from both the audience and fans of Eiichiro Oda’s iconic manga. With the confirmation of a third season, the producers face a significant challenge in tackling the Alabasta arc, a crucial moment for the series’ narrative.

The challenge of adapting Alabasta

Alabasta is not only a milestone for the Mugiwara, but also for the creators of the live-action, who will need to successfully adapt one of the most beloved sagas from the original material. This arc, which features a strong political charge and thrilling action, will introduce Crocodile as the main antagonist, and it is expected that we will also see the appearance of Portgas D. Ace, which promises to excite the followers of the story.

During the second season, there were already signs that the plot was heading towards Alabasta, with the revelation that Miss Wednesday is Princess Nefertari Vivi. The narrative will now require a more action-focused approach, highlighting spectacular battles that will surpass those of Arlong, but also incorporating political development that will be vital to the story.

The filming process for the third season has already begun and the release is expected in 2027, reducing the waiting time between seasons compared to the previous two years. However, the project will face challenges, especially after the departure of showrunner Matt Owens, who left the project to prioritize his well-being, but Ian Stokes and Joe Tracz will continue to lead.

The adaptation of the Alabasta arc is essential for the future of the series, and Eiichiro Oda’s involvement as executive producer brings a ray of hope to One Piece fans, who have high expectations for the magic of the anime and manga to be translated to the screen in the upcoming episodes.

The story of ‘Nineteen Steps’ is set during World War II and tells the love story between a 19-year-old girl, Nellie Morris, and an American pilot, inspired by a true event that left 173 victims. Brown has conceived this project from her perspective as a writer.

The film will be directed by Tom Hooper, a renowned filmmaker who won the Oscar for ‘The King’s Speech’. His experience in historical dramas raises expectations around ‘Nineteen Steps’, making it one of the most anticipated productions not only of Brown’s career but also in the calendar of contemporary historical cinema.

Netflix has set its sights on the future, anticipating the 2027 Women’s World Cup, and will offer advertisers the option to dynamically insert ads during its broadcast.

This strategy aims to increase the platform’s advertising revenue, which is expected to reach $3 billion this year, according to Greg Peters, co-CEO and director of Netflix.

The race for dynamic ads

Since it announced an ad-supported subscription plan in 2022, the company has been expanding its advertising capabilities. Among these innovations is dynamic ad insertion, which allows personalized ads to be shown to different viewers in real time.

However, advertisers are cautious about this technology. Amanda Wallingford, programmatic director at The Shipyard agency, noted that there is high interest in live entertainment, but the effectiveness of DAI is still under evaluation.

One of the main concerns is the high cost of CPMs on Netflix, which could be a barrier for many advertisers. While DAI can target specific audiences in certain cities, its scalability has been questioned due to technical issues in previous live event broadcasts, such as the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.

Some advertising agencies are devising strategies to use DAI effectively. For example, it has been suggested to target ads to viewers interested in traveling to sporting events, such as the Women’s World Cup or the 2028 Olympic Games. However, live advertising deals with Netflix have not yet been finalized, mainly due to high costs.

In conclusion, although the dynamic insertion of ads represents a promising evolution in digital advertising, its successful implementation still faces significant challenges within the live streaming ecosystem.

This continuation comes after the success of the first season, which reached the fourth position in the Global Top of the platform and received very positive reviews. In this new installment, fans will be able to explore the complex story of Vergil and Dante, delving into the connection between both characters and the impact of their past on the current narrative.

From Video Game to Anime

The trailer reveals that the plot will focus on the reunion between the brothers, whose lives took a tragic turn in the first season, where it was revealed that Vergil was alive and in the service of Mundus, the King of the Underworld. The series, produced by Studio Mir and directed by Adi Shankar, promises to offer more action and narrative depth, moving away from the more superficial elements of the original games and better developing villains like Arius and Mundus, who will have the opportunity to shine in this adaptation.

With a total of eight episodes of approximately 30 minutes each, the series is designed to capture the attention of both long-time fans and new viewers. The renewed focus on the protagonists and the inclusion of characters that were not as successful in previous games aim to provide a refreshingly engaging experience. Anime fans may be eager to discover how the characters’ stories will intertwine and what unexpected narrative twists the series might propose.

In addition, Netflix plans to expand its anime offerings, with upcoming releases like Mushoku Tensei, reflecting the growing popularity of this genre in its catalog. Con the success of Devil May Cry, the platform seems determined to continue exploring and developing content that appeals to a diverse and expanding audience.
