5 mods that completely overhaul The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

We’ve compiled of five mods that serve to greatly change the Skyrim experience, some of which add new mechanics and gameplay, others that add new quests and content, and one that completely builds the game over again from the ground up.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been one of our favorite games since its November 2011 release. After playing it with added DLC and multiple different characters and playstyles, we jumped online to experience the incredibly talented, underrated modding community. Over seven years later, Skyrim still remains an outstanding game and a highly replayable experience (thus all the new editions), but sometimes we’re looking for our game mods to be bigger, richer, and more pervasive in our game.

5 mods that completely overhaul The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

5. Civil War Overhaul, Author: simtam

Civil War Overhaul

Simtam’s Civil War Overhaul mod affects the Civil War quest line, in which the Dragonborn must choose to aid either the Stormcloaks or the Imperials in a bloody war to determine the governing faction of the region. By default, this quest is started by joining either the Imperials or Stormcloaks in their respective holds, with either General Tullius (Solitude) or Ulfric Stormcloak (Windhelm) leading the charge.

Civil War Overhaul

From this point on, the quest line is about laying siege to different hold capitals and forts across the map, trying to gain ground and push back the opposing side. Once a siege begins, it’s just a matter of eliminating enemy units until the fight’s over. Rinse, repeat. There’s really no way to lose unless you fall in battle.

Civil War Overhaul gives the enemy AI a chance to retaliate and stage counter-assaults of their own, attacking holds and cities that were previously owned by your faction. Additionally, any battle that you lose will result in that city being taken by the opposing faction, leading to some new scenarios where cities are under a completely different banner.

Lose a city and you’ll receive a note from a courier saying that a different hold is under attack, and that you must go to defend it. Next time you show up at that city, you’ll be fighting to wrest control of it.

Civil War Overhaul

What makes this mod so great is that it primarily uses content like dialogue and scripted events that Bethesda already had in the game – they just never added it to the final product. With this mod, it really feels as though Skyrim’s civil war is more present and you can begin to feel the toll it’s taking on the land. It couples extremely well with another small mod, The Honored Dead, which adds more signs of battle, scattering Stormcloak and Imperial corpses across the lands.

4. Wildcat Combat, Author: Enaisiaion

Wildcat Combat

If you’ve ever wanted a more gritty, realistic approach to combat in Skyrim then Wildcat is the mod for you. This mod adds a layer of realism to the bloody world, adding injuries to the game and generally enhancing the way combat looks and feels.

While this doesn’t add any new content to the game, Wildcat makes the ever-present bloodbath of Skyrim feel far more intense; both you and the enemies you fight will really feel and act as though they are fighting for their lives, taking fewer risks when they feel threatened, or drinking health potions when injured. If you want to feel like the all-powerful Dragonborn, laying waste to scores of enemies, this mod is definitely not for you.

Rather, Wildcat is catered more toward fans of series like Kingdom Come: Deliverance or Witcher. The damage you dish out and receive is much more evenly distributed, meaning that human enemies will feel like just that – a blow from a sword will cut deep no matter what level it says they allegedly are. It’s realistic.

Wildcat Combat

The legendary difficulty is where you’ll see this take the most effect – both you and the enemies you’re fighting can only take a couple hits before being killed, which makes for a brutally realistic experience and makes you feel awesome any time you take down a whole camp of bandits.

Wildcat will leave you susceptible to the stun effects of enemy shield bashes, and both you and the enemies will take more damage when injured, which makes sense if you think about it. The injury system is the coolest thing about this mod, granting you or the enemy a random debuff should you (or they) fall below a certain threshold. This debuff can be a stagger, a slower walk, reduced magicka, or randomly falling over.

Wildcat Combat

If you’re looking to change the way you play Skyrim from start to finish, this is a fantastic mod to get.

3. Frostfall, Author: Chesko

One of the most popular immersion mods out there, Frostfall takes Skyrim and turns it into a survival game, akin to something like  The Long Dark. Frostfall adds several survival-based mechanics to the game, including exposure, coverage, and even a new perk system.

Exposure will measure how much the current weather conditions are affecting you, and if it gets too low you’ll begin to suffer some debuffs like dampness or even frostbite. This means slower movement and reduced regeneration rates. Let it get bad enough and you’ll eventually collapse and need to be rescued (whereupon you’ll wake up in a nearby inn, or die depending on what difficulty you set).

Frostfall

Wearing layers will keep you warm and will cause your exposure meter to fall at a slower pace. What’s really cool is the optional plug-in that shows you how much warmth and coverage any gear in your inventory will provide. This serves to really make Skyrim feel like a new game, or like you’re playing on a new campaign plus.

Frostfall

The new perk system is divided into two trees: Camping and endurance. Camping helps you harvest materials needed for building campfires, setting tents, or even using a walking stick when traveling rougher terrain. To level it up, you’ll light fires and build campsites. The endurance tree provides more passives and stat increases to help you survive for longer before suffering the debilitating effects of the cold.

Frostfall

Frostfall couples extremely well with isoku’s Wet and Cold mod, which adds new breath and frost effects to both you and NPCs, as well as having them react to harsher weather conditions by donning cloaks, hoods, or heading indoors. All in all, this is an excellent mod if you’re ready to tackle a highly realistic Skyrim with a bunch more factors to take into consideration.

2. Requiem, Author: ogerboss

Requiem

Modders have created several different skill tree overhauls for Skyrim, most notably Perkus Maximus or Ordinator. Requiem, however, is in a class of its own, and drastically alters the entire role-playing experience. Requiem changes the level scaling of all enemies in the game, meaning that a creature’s difficulty no longer derives any impact from what level you are as the player. You might not think this will have much effect, but when you’re suddenly killed by a wandering draugr in one or two hits you’ll quickly see what we mean.

For players who enjoy a challenging game like Dark Souls or Ninja Gaiden, this mod certainly spikes the difficulty. The flip side of the coin, though, is that Requiem provides much more reward for leveling up and becoming the biggest, baddest dude to walk the lands. It feels more like you earned it, and like you’ve more cemented your title as Skyrim’s top dog.

Requiem

Lastly, Requiem totally overhauls Skyrim’s perk tree, substituting the bland descriptions of abilities for more flowery dialogue about your growth in this harsh world. All the skill trees that do not receive a benefit from your race of choice will begin at 5 instead of 15, meaning you’ll really feel the role-playing element of choosing, say, a high elf. As compensation, perks are few and far between in Requiem, but adding one will really make you feel a difference in the way your character plays and how powerful you feel.

1. Enderal – SureAI

Enderal

While the other mods on this list serve to radically restructure various elements, quests, or core gameplay of Skyrim, Enderal is something else entirely. Enderal strips away everything you know about Skyrim’s story, location, assets, and characters, leaving pretty much only the game’s engine intact.

Enderal keeps the same menus and HUD that you’re familiar with from Skyrim, and you’ll pretty much be earning experience in the same way as you would in Skyrim. This serves to make the whole game feel like the Skyrim that could have been, like Skyrim were it developed by a completely different team than Bethesda Game Studios.

Look good? You can install Enderal right here.

Enderal is anywhere between 30-100 hours long and features new classes, weapons, skills, enemies, exploration tokens, as well as a totally re-balanced combat. The overall experience is far harder than Skyrim, and it’s borne both from what is in the game and also from what is not. There is no fast-travel for example, and players must walk from location to location to return to cities or ruins that they were not able to fully investigate earlier. Waiting has hugely nerfed, and in Enderal can only be done at an inn or in a bed, and health regeneration is largely reduced.

Enderal

Where Enderal really cranks things up to 11 is in its story, lore, and world-building. Every NPC is fully voice-acted, and voice-acted well, providing a deeply immersive, compelling experience. Enderal even has gambling mini-games at certain inns, and generally, the whole of the game feels like a real living, breathing world complete with varying environments and enemy types – something that the default Skyrim was often criticized for lacking.

Enderal

Enderal is more stable than Skyrim, but the improved visuals do make it more taxing on your computer, so be sure your system can handle it before booting it up. If your rig can run Enderal, though, we definitely think it’s your best bet for rediscovering Skyrim through wholly new eyes.

Brave BAT

Brave is a new browser that offers crazy fast browsing speeds, reinforced security, all the familiarity, and customization that a 2019 internet user can expect, as well as a top-notch privacy filter that shoots down invasive trackers, ads, pop-ups, cookies, and banners. That’s usually where the story stops, but Brave takes modern browsing a step even further: Brave allows its users to convert their attention into tokens that they can seamlessly distribute to their choice of content publishers and advertisers.

This Basic Attention Token is based on Ethereum technology and serves as a unit of account between advertisers, publishers, and users in Brave’s new, blockchain-based digital advertising and services platform. Here’s how you can earn BAT with Brave.

How to earn BAT

You never have to watch ads with Brave. Period. They’re ignored and blocked by default, but if you choose to turn them back on, you will receive BAT any time you take the time to view them. To begin, turn on Brave Rewards by clicking on the BAT symbol on the right of your main search portal:

6 great fantasy RPGs you’ve never heard about

Tired of traversing the world of Skyrim? These RPGs are sure to tickle your fancy!

Reckoning

If you’re modding the heck out of your eleventh Skyrim run, we feel for you. It’s likely going to be a while before Elder Scrolls VI lands, or even before we get any more information on it, so in the meantime, it’s a struggle finding another title for sate that fantasy RPG craving.

If you’re a fantasy RPG fan, by 2019, you’ve probably played your share of Baldur’s Gate, Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and all its DLC, and Dragon Age. While these are still some of the best titles on the market, there’s a handful of lesser-known games out there under the radar with just as much charm, lore, smooth gameplay, and replayability. Take a look at six fantasy RPG games that you’ve probably never heard of, but will love:

6. Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

Arcanum broken metal fish
Explore a broken zeppelin with magic spells. Blend fantasy and steampunk!

The (long) title of the game gives a bit of hint as to what makes this game so cool. Magic and technology coexist in this world, but it’s an uneasy balance. Mages are discriminated from riding trains for fear that their latent arcane energies will halt it on the track.

You can design your character to work more on the tech side of things (new inventions, weapons, gadgets, and robots), or the magic side (fireballs, charm spells, necromantic summons, or teleportation). Wield a flintlock pistol just as easily as you would a flaming sword:

Aside from the gorgeous, atmospheric string soundtrack, the game also knocks it out of the park with its RPG elements almost immediately. Right off the bat, you’re given the choice of eight playable races (Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Half-Ogres, Half-Orcs, and Half-Elves) and more than 60 character backgrounds!

You might think that it’s just number-crunching, but shockingly, there’s dialogue to match each one. It’s not just dialogue, either; racism is alive and well in Arcanum. While playing as a half-orc can grant you some good strength bonuses, other races will treat you like dirt. You might even be denied lodging.

Arcanum lore rumors notes
Tons of well-written lore, branching dialogue, and character interactions.

It’s an old-school RPG. The combat can be merciless and the controls a little clunky. Save often and in different slots (which is a good rule of thumb for multiple games on this list,) and don’t be afraid to change up the control scheme or the combat style. You can switch from turn-based to real-time, both of which have their distinct advantages against different foes. It’s another really unique facet of Arcanum.

The game has tons of different weapons and armor, potions to concoct, and a slew of spells for the mage player. There are 16 different spell colleges, ranging from elemental magic, necromancy, divination, mind control, and even temporal spells that control the flow of time.

Somewhere between magic and tech is you

If you have the patience for a steeper learning curve, definitely give this game a try. If you’re worried about bugs, you can slap on this free patch too.

5. Two Worlds II

Two Worlds II air spell monster New Ashos
Protect the city of New Ashos with a tailor-made ricochet air spell.

Two Worlds II had a hard time right out of the gate, being the sequel to the hilarious Two Worlds. When a game fumbles at the start, it can be a death sentence for impatient players, and this game’s intro was rocky. It’s a shame because while there are certainly flaws to Two Worlds II, if you sift through the game you’ll find some elements that make other fantasy games pale in comparison.

Combat animations are clunky, but the environment, art, and lighting are breathtaking. You’ll travel in a (mostly) open world that ranges from the fields of the Savannah to the tropical islands and busy cities of act two.

The RPG element here isn’t quite as strong as in Arcanum (you’re stuck playing a specific, rather dull protagonist). However, the gameplay and level-up system cater to a respectable variety of creative play styles. You can be wily and kick dirt into an enemy’s face, fire distraction arrows while sneaking up behind targets, or summon giant spiders and rock golems to aid you in combat. You can even play music (which works kind of like Guitar Hero) in a crowded street to earn some coin.

The magic system in Two Worlds II is definitely its shining point. So, if you’re a fan of playing the wizard, we cannot stress how much this game rewards creative spell crafting and casting. Instead of providing you with recipes for spells, Two Worlds II gives you ingredients and encourages you to mix and match cards, amulets, staffs, and summons to make an astounding variety of element combinations.

Spray the ground with traps that summon giant scorpions. Fire a leeching fog missile that blinds targets with mist while sapping their health to you. Check out how crazy it can get:

Two Worlds II has its flaws, but if you’re willing to look past them you’ll likely find several aspects that you’ll wish other fantasy RPGs shared. See which of those are for you!

4. Kingdoms of Amalur

Amalur forest quest
Sink in hundreds of hours of gameplay as you explore the lush worlds of Amalur.

What do you get when you combine the creative energies of New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston, the lead designer for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? You get Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, a charming fantasy world that feels (and looks) a bit like a sequel to Fable.

There’s the standard enormous world to explore with tons of different monsters to fight, branching side-quests with multiple endings, and all the blacksmithing, rune-slotting, and potion-crafting that you could want.

Kingdoms of Amalur desert monster feyblades
Seamlessly switch from spells to bow to blades

While designing your character’s appearance doesn’t provide you with a ton of options, there’s an insane amount of depth to the game’s RPG element. There are customizable classes, unlockable specialization cards, and the revolutionary Destiny system that lets you continuously evolve as you decide which play style works best for you. Hint: they’re all ridiculously fun. You can fight with flaming chakrams. Need we say more?

What makes the protagonist of KoA special is that he can literally bend fate in a world that’s otherwise restricted to a set course. The world, plot, and gameplay are yours to mold.

3. Arx Fatalis

Arx Fatalis combat
Explore, fight, sneak, cast, and conquer

Arx Fatalis was designed back in 2002 by Arkane Studios, the same company that created Prey back in 2017. It tells a thought-provoking story in an authentic, immersive medieval landscape. Like all good role-playing games, your decisions will directly affect the world and the people around you.

Arx Fatalis quest
Is she worth helping? Maybe she has a key for those chests…

There are dungeons full of goblins, rat-men, trolls, and mummies, and you can do so with your choice in the classic triumvirate of stealth, magic, or brawn. Swing a variety of weapons, sneak through hidden tunnels and doorways, or use the fancy “onscreen gesture based magic system.” Basically, you’ll be using your mouse to control the character’s hand as he weaves arcane sigils of power into the air like Dr. Strange:

Gesture-based spell combat makes you feel like a legit wizard.

Arx is innovative and very atmospheric, with combat, puzzles and tough choices. We recommend you watch a video of the first ten minutes to get a feel for its flow. If you like the vibe it gives you, the game is only $4.99 on Steam. Check it out and let us know what you think!

2. Loom

Loom Lucasarts Chaos Bobbin Cygna
Bobbin’s distaff can open clam shells … or rifts in the fabric of reality.

An oldie but a goodie, Loom was designed by the now-defunct LucasArts around the same time as The Secret of Monkey Island. It’s a point-and-click puzzle game but the twist is that your main tool to solve puzzles and progress is music. You play as Bobbin Threadbare, a cloaked and hooded member of the mysterious Weaver Guild, an elusive cult that gets ‘transcended’ into a flock of swans at the start of the game.

Loom Lucasarts Shepherds Dyeing
How might it be helpful to dye a sheep’s wool green?

Backed by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet, the game is full of poetic imagery. There are cities made of emerald glass, black caves beneath a dragon’s lair, a floating city in the shape of a smoking anvil, and a sparkling pond awash in a sea of stars. The game progresses as Bobbin discovers the extent of his powers and his role in the shifting world.

Complete with an audio drama to jump-start the plot action, this game is chock full of striking lore, memorable characters, and visuals that pushed the envelope for the graphics of games that followed.

Loom beach Glassmaker Guild
Explore a rich world and unlock new notes to weave new ‘drafts’ and spells.

Besides the atmosphere, what really separates this game from others in the genre is how puzzles are solved. Rather than cramming an inventory full of desultory objects, the game “levels you up” by teaching you new notes on a (literal and figurative) music staff. When an egg is trying to hatch, it sounds four notes in an arpeggio. Repeat those ‘opening’ tones on a door and it swings open! Reverse the chord and it closes. The answer to a puzzle isn’t always what you see in Loom; it’s what you hear.

1. Quest for Glory

Quest for Glory I brigand fight
Every conflict makes you stronger, richer, and more experienced.

While the classic fighter-thief-mage paths are ubiquitous by today’s standards, Quest for Glory is the franchise that started the trend. This series blends the point-and-click puzzle genre (ie Roberta Williams’ King’s Quest or Monkey Island) with a true fantasy RPG with character stats, roaming monsters, spells to learn, and houses to rob. The fighter, thief, and mage paths are not just branching skill trees for a single character, either; they’re three distinct styles of storytelling. The brawny fighter and clever mage can come to the same puzzle but solve it in completely different ways. The thief class often gets entirely new areas to explore that the other two classes are unable to reach.

Quest for Glory II Trail By Fire WIT
Earn the right to undergo your wizard initiation. Join the ranks of the most prestigious mages.

Quest for Glory is not just one game for you to play – it’s a five-game series, each taking place in a new locale: The Germanic or Swedish-inspired Valley of Spielburg, with forests teeming with goblins and trolls; the Arabian deserts of the sister cities Shapeir and Raseir; the vast Serengeti fields of Tarna and the Simbani tribe; the Transylvanian swamps and woods of the Slavic-inspired Mordavia (watch out for vampires); and the isle of Silmaria, the final chapter that takes you through the heights (Pegasus) and depths (Hades) of Greek mythology, culminating in a contest for kingship to save the land from the Dragon of Doom.

Quest for Glory IV Shadows of Darkness graveyard
Quest for glory over majestic seas, through cursed crypts, and to the depths of the underworld.

One of the most uniquely innovative facets of Quest for Glory is that upon completion of a game you’re given the option to import your character into the next game. Your class, stats, gold, potions, and spells all carry over with you so your hard work early on in the series gets you more mileage as you progress further.

That gold coin you earned back in the first game could well buy you a new throwing dagger all the way in Silmaria! If you’re a fan of the fantasy RPG genre then this a simply a game you must try. It’s got humor, adventure, well-written characters, memorable locations, clever puzzles, challenging monsters, creative spells, and five games worth of incredible content. That puts it at the top of our list of recommendations!

Insight Timer is the best app to manage your stress

Could one app help manage your stress forever?

Two months ago HCA Healthcare called stress the “health epidemic of the 21st century” and frankly we’re not surprised. Last year 6,700 Americans nationwide between the ages of 18 and 64 were surveyed about how stressful their lives were, and health experts were genuinely surprised at the resulting harm brought about by chronic stress and the general apathy towards doing anything to curb it.

Mental health stress kitchen breakdown

Whether you’re a college student up to your eyeballs in exams, a millennial managing multiple jobs, a homeowner struggling to balance kids on one hand and a checkbook on the other, or a company manager trying to corral employees, it’s the same old cyclical issue: Your hectic life makes you stressed, and when you approach life from a stressed mental state everything gets harder.

We’re not going to preach life advice to you; no two people are the same, and what works to simplify and organize one person might have little effect on someone else. So instead we’ll point you towards one handy app that’s worked wonders:

Insight Timer

Insight Timer is a free app for Android and iOS that lets you escape the chaos and anxiety of the world for a period of time (which you can custom set), meditate (if you’re into that kind of thing), and come back stronger and more level-headed. Insight Timer won Apps of the Year in both TIME magazine and Women’s Health, and more time is spent on it than on any other meditation app.

Steam voice chat broken? Here is how to fix it.

Since going live, Steam’s new chat has seen a variety of much-needed, highly anticipated features pertaining to friends and chat. The new channels, drag-and-drop friends, and media sharing are all welcome additions to Steam… when they work.

Some users encountered a bug, however, that prevents voice chat from functioning at all. And that just won’t do.

steam chat

If you are one such user looking to solve the problem, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s how to fix it in 5 steps.

How to fix Steam voice chat

1. Open Steam

* IF YOU ARE IN FAMILY VIEW you will need to turn it off before you can fix your audio issues.

Family View can be toggled off by clicking the green button next to your profile image on the top right. Enter your four-digit password and it will switch to red. You’ll now be able to access the windows required to fix your issue.

2. Open the friends & chat window

Located at the bottom of the Steam window, as shown.

4. Open the settings menu from the chat window

Click the gear icon at the top right (as shown) and it will take you to a friends list screen.

5. Tab over to voice

6. Change your input and output devices

Here’s where the problem lies – the Steam update likely changed what your “default” devices are for chatting. All you need to do is switch them back to the device you’d like Steam to recognize as your primary. Simply click the drop-down and select your device from the given options.

* If you do NOT see your device listed, be sure it’s plugged in correctly, and that it’s recognized by your computer. You can check this in Settings > Bluetooth & other devices

A dash will appear in front of the device that is currently being used, so be sure it’s next to the correct one before you close out of this window.

Complete MCU timeline explained

Confused about Marvel’s timelines? This video should help!

Avengers Endgame Captain America fight

With “Avengers: Endgame” and the upcoming “Spider-Man: Far From Home“, we’re quickly wrapping up Marvel’s Phase 3. For the avid Marvel fan there’s a wealth of awesome content in the past 10 years of movies, but for the novice who’s looking to hop aboard the hype train, there’s something of a learning curve.

Even if you’ve been following these films since Jon Favreau kicked them off with “Iron Man” in 2008, you might be scratching your head trying to remember whether Odin’s father killed the Dark Elves before Red Skull was born. Or maybe you’ve got no idea when Thanos adopted Gamora. Perhaps you can’t quite recall how many times the Tesseract traded hands. Lucky for us, Looper recently put out this handy timeline video that charts out the entire MCU timeline – everything from the Big Bang up to “Far From Home.” So strap in and buckle up; it’s a bumpy ride!

This video does a great job of fitting in all the concurrent events, and only slipped up on a few small details:

1. Ultron used the Mind Stone to create Vision, not the Soul Stone.

2. Zemo didn’t control Bucky to assassinate T’chaka; he did it himself while wearing a mask.

3. While this mentions “Agent Carter” it doesn’t bring up the littany of other Marvel Netflix shows, such as “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Daredevil,” or “Defenders.” Techincally these are canon too!

We hope this timeline helps straighten out some of the foggier details of the MCU.

Here’s how you can support your favorite sites with a simple browser change.

brave browser

Whether you’re aware of it or not, you are paying to browse the web. Pop-up windows, advertisement videos, and a barrage of banners, callouts, cookies, and trackers are all taking up your attention. Advertisers have been transmitting your valuable private data without your permission, and that data is transmitted through invasive ad technology that you downloaded.

That’s the way things are, but it’s not the way things have to remain: Brave offers a new browsing experience – one that values your time, money, and personal information. How much? Enough for them to pay you for it.

Brave blocks third-party ads, cookies, pop-ups, and trackers by default. The browser is free, and you’re welcome to browse the internet sans impediments and irritations forevermore. That said, there’s the argument that by ignoring ads you’re not giving publishers any way to generate revenue. This will end poorly for both them and you; publishers not generating income means less free content for users. In short, if they can’t afford to give free content anymore, they won’t. Get ready to start paying to watch YouTube videos or paying to read online news articles.

That’s not the future anybody wants. Brave has taken this into serious consideration, and has proposed a solution:

Brave Rewards

Brave Rewards is an optional feature of the browser that allows users to anonymously contribute to their favorite sites. Once enabled, Brave automatically keeps track of the time you spend and the attention you give to any sites you visit. Brave also routinely gives out a monthly grant of free BAT to its users. Put as much in your wallet as you like!

Brave Rewards
Brave Rewards lets you contribute to your favorite content creators.

Brave Rewards divides up that amount once a month, distributing it accordingly to the sites you’ve visited; you finally get to decide which sites benefit from your monetized attention. If you want to contribute money toward a site, this can also be done through Brave: You can send one-off tips to content creators.  Likewise, if there’s a site you visit that you do not want to contribute to, simply remove the site from the list.

Your contributions are anonymous

If you’re concerned about which companies you’re supporting, you’ll be glad to know that Brave Rewards employs a technology called Anonize. This allows for “anonymous-but-accountable transactions.” Anonize utilizes “Zero Knowledge Proofs” to identify that users are authorized to make transactions … but cannot tell who you are specifically. All Anonize knows is that you’re registered to donate your BAT. No one will know which sites you’ve chosen to support – not Brave, and not the sites themselves. All Brave does is tally up the total support for each site and send tokens (Basic Attention Tokens) their way. That said, users are always able to check which sites they’ve previously supported, how much support they’ve given, and decide which they want to support in the coming month.

Brave BAT explainedIf this is confusing, Brave presents a handy analogy: “Someone walks into a polling place, identifies themselves, and gets a ballot and an envelope. They go into a voting booth, mark the ballot, put the ballot in the envelope, and seal it. They then drop the envelope in a ballot box. The people running the polling place and counting the ballots know that each person putting an envelope in the ballot box is authorized to vote, but they aren’t able to determine which envelope in the ballot box goes with which person.”

Help fund YouTube creators

By default, Brave lets you watch YouTube videos without being hassled by ads. Enable Brave Rewards, however, and now you can also help sponsor your favorite YouTubers. Brave has expanded support for the Basic Attention Token to YouTube creators, which enables a direct relationship between the content creators and you: You can support content creators with your BAT, and the content creators can then sell that BAT for profit. While this will help any and all YouTubers, this is especially beneficial to those with under 10,000 views, since they’re not yet receiving ad revenue from YouTube.

So is this like Bitcoin?

No, BAT is not a digital currency; it’s a utility token. BAT is used to indicate exchanges between users, advertisers, and publishers, and allows the Brave browser to directly measure and verify the attention that you spend online. As Brave explains on their FAQ page, “since BAT is a utility token it can be used as a unit of account between advertisers, publishers, and users on the BAT platform, and can be utilized to directly measure, exchange, and verify attention. Bitcoin would not enable this distinct, in-platform problem solving. Finally, using BAT on Ethereum allows for faster scalability than using Bitcoin.”

So it’s not Bitcoin… is it safe?

Short answer: Yes.

Brave’s servers don’t own custody of any funds in a user’s Brave wallet. Moreover, Brave isn’t even able to access that information. That means it’s literally impossible for anyone to steal any of that data from you, or manage it at all. The BAT is yours alone to distribute how you wish.

If you experiment with Brave Rewards and find you don’t like it, no harm done! You can switch it back off via the Rewards Preferences page right here:

Enable Brave RewardsLikewise, you can always re-engage it or alter your monthly contribution amount on the Monthly Payment menu. Users can start calling the shots where their BAT gets to go, and content creators can sign up with Brave Rewards to start receiving BAT from users.
