Minecraft creator Notch shunned by Microsoft for hateful tweets

The creator of a beloved game stirs up controversy.

Minecraft Notch

Normally, a fedora-wearing neckbeard making bigoted comments on Twitter wouldn’t be newsworthy. However, this neckbeard happens to be a billionaire and the creator of the second best-selling game of all time: Minecraft. Enter Markus “Notch” Persson.

Notch, a programmer from Sweden, first revealed Minecraft publicly in 2009 on small forums. Over the next few years, the game gained significant mainstream popularity, becoming a cultural phenomenon akin to Pokémon’s peak in the ’90s. Notch founded the company Mojang with the money earned from Minecraft, which handled the development of the game. In 2014, Notch sold Mojang and the Minecraft IP to Microsoft for a staggering $2.5 billion.

Since the Microsoft deal, Notch is no longer involved in Minecraft’s development. He is nonetheless closely associated with Minecraft, as Microsoft no doubt fears.

Having a few billion dollars and apparently nothing to do, Notch spends most of his time on Twitter posting hateful messages and supporting far-right conspiracy theories. A few gems of his include:

Criticizing the concept of racial privilege:

Mocking LGBT pride parades and inciting violence in a now-deleted tweet that read (without asterisks):

“If you’re against the concept of a #HeterosexualPrideDay, you’re a complete f***ing c**t and deserve to be shot”

Propagating the insane Pizzagate conspiracy theory:

Promoting the 4chan-originated deep state QAnon conspiracy:

Despite Notch not having any current involvement in the development or promotion of Minecraft, Microsoft has recently stepped up in trying to distance themselves from the developer. As of a March 2019 update, Notch’s name no longer appears in any of Minecraft’s splash screens (though his name still appears in the credits).

Now, as Minecraft approaches its 10th anniversary, Microsoft is planning to celebrate the milestone with a press event at Mojang’s Stockholm headquarters. The event will feature developers and community members who were essential to Minecraft’s history, though Notch himself did not receive an invitation. Microsoft released a statement on the matter:

“His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of Minecraft.”

Minecraft shows no signs of slowing down, but don’t expect to see Notch let anywhere near it anytime soon.

How streaming services are becoming cable all over again

Have you noticed streaming services taking up more of your paycheck?

Streaming video

Remember how revolutionary Netflix and Hulu were when they came out a decade ago?

Being able to watch any episode of dozens of shows anytime you want? For a sub -10 monthly price? It seemed so futuristic, and millions of people across the world cut their cable cords in favor of this new consumer-friendly technology. It truly seemed like we’d see the death of cable television, with its barrage of ads and constantly soaring prices, within the next few years. As it would turn out, cable is still alive and kicking, but something potentially worse is beginning to take its place. Streaming services have become the very evil they set out to destroy.

obi wan

What’s happening to streaming?

streaming services
How many of these are you subscribed to?

The whole idea behind streaming services in the first place was having all of your favorite movies and shows bundled together in one convenient inexpensive package. Far too often, you’d purchase a cable subscription that would come with dozens of expensive channels that you didn’t want. When they first hit the scene, Hulu and Netflix alleviated this problem by featuring some of the most popular movies and shows on their services. If there was a big show that you wanted to binge, you could bet that it would be on either Netflix or Hulu. This so-called “Golden Age of Streaming” lived up to its name by providing consumer-friendly options to people who had been squeezed dry by cable companies for decades.

This worked out nicely for a few years because even if you bought both Netflix and Hulu it still cost far less than a cable subscription. Both of these services became enormously successful, and it seemed most households had at least one of them.

Of course, in a capitalist society when something becomes successful, other people want to hop on the bandwagon. New streaming services started crawling out of the woodwork. From major networks promoting their own content (HBO Now, Showtime) to massive sports organizations putting up games and exclusive content (NFL Game Pass, NBA League Pass, WWE Network), it seemed everyone wanted a slice of the pie.

This seemed like a good thing at first, as it let consumers view some of their favorite content whenever they wanted. But the more streaming services appeared, the more content was spread out amongst them. Now, simply buying Netflix or Hulu wasn’t enough to get all of the content you wanted.

Why streaming services have become cable

cable tvTo understand what streaming services are becoming, we first need to look at the history of cable. When television first became popular in the 1950s, it was free for anyone with a TV to access with an antenna. Broadcasters and television studios made their money off of commercials that played between, and sometimes during, shows. As technology advanced, TV transitioned from analog signals to digital signals, which required a cable box to use.

Cable boxes had to be purchased and subscriptions had to be bought, but consumers thought that it would be worth it because you wouldn’t have commercials. For a while, this was actually true, but cable companies soon became absurdly powerful and started placing commercials in TV programs just because they could. Not only that, but they also started increasing the price of cable packages because there were no other viable options for watching TV. As cable companies got greedier, consumers became disgruntled, yet were forced to play ball if they wanted to watch TV. Now, streaming services are following a similar path.

Netflix and Hulu debuted at incredibly low price points and became extremely popular when pitted against oppressive cable packages. However, as both services realized their stranglehold on the entertainment market, they steadily increased their prices, ignoring consumer outcry. They did this because they could, just as the cable companies did all those years ago.

Now, as dozens of streaming services have emerged, picking a streaming service is no longer the simple and consumer-friendly affair that it was a decade ago. As new players appeared in the streaming game, they further fracture content across different platforms, forcing consumers to buy new services if they want that content. For example, before Disney+ debuts in November, they will gradually pull all Disney content off of competing platforms like Netflix. Say goodbye to Marvel movies and Disney classics on other platforms, because if you’re a Disney fan, the only streaming option will be Disney+.

It’s this kind of fragmentation that will lead to increased prices and fewer consumer options. Streaming services know that their content is valuable, and they will raise their prices because they know that they can. Disney knows how valuable their properties are just as Netflix knows how popular its original shows like “Stranger Things” or “13 Reasons Why” are. Consumers will be forced to choose between increasingly pricy options to get the content they want, while also paying for content that they don’t care about.

This sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

5 Marvel stories the MCU should use after ‘Avengers: Endgame’

With Endgame in our rearview mirror, it’s time to look ahead at other possible Marvel projects to come.

SPOILERS BELOW!

Endgame Iron Man Helmet

Now that we got that out of the way…

The aftermath of “Avengers: Endgame” left many fans in tears, both of joy and of sadness. The film presented a satisfying and climactic end to a 22-movie saga that changed the landscape of blockbuster films forever. We don’t know where the MCU is going to go after Endgame, but we do have some theories:

For many fans, it’s difficult to imagine Marvel ever surpassing Endgame. While this may end up being true, there have been dozens of huge crossover events throughout Marvel’s decades of comic books. One major advantage the MCU has moving forward is Disney’s purchase of FOX. This gives the MCU access to lucrative Marvel characters like the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Here are five massive Marvel stories that could end up becoming major successes in the MCU:

5 Marvel stories the MCU should use after “Avengers: Endgame”

5. Secret Invasion

secret invasion mcu marvel skrulls

In the comics, the shapeshifting alien Skrulls have been a pain in the side of many superhero teams. This includes the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. The storyline “Secret Invasion” has several key figures in the Marvel Universe being kidnapped and secretly replaced with Skrulls. It leads up to a full-on invasion of Earth.

Earth’s heroes quickly find themselves unable to trust one another, worried that they may be talking to a Skrull. The Skrulls even took the form of several beloved dead Marvel heroes to sew confusion and emotional vulnerability among the Avengers. This is something that could be exploited in a movie adaptation to bring back some fan-favorite characters temporarily.

The invasion force has them combining the powers of several heroes into single beings called Super Skrulls. In this story, the Skrulls use their psychological and scientific prowess to bring the Avengers to their knees.

The Skrulls finally made their MCU appearance in “Captain Marvel,” being portrayed as sympathetic refugees hoping to escape the imperialistic, warlike Kree. While their portrayal in “Captain Marvel” worked in the movie and was a welcome surprise, there are several ways the MCU can turn the Skrulls into a vicious invasion force.

Since “Captain Marvel” took place in the ’90s, they could show a rebuilt Skrull Empire that has since shunned their peaceful ways. Alternatively, they could show a powerful Skrull terrorist force that goes rogue from the Skrulls we already saw. Either way, “Secret Invasion” would be a massive, body-snatching cinematic experience.

4. Annihilation

“Annihilation” was a comic storyline that had many of Marvel’s cosmic heroes like the Silver Surfer, (what would become) the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Nova defending the universe against the unstoppable Annihilation Wave. The Annihilation Wave was a force of millions of insect-like ships led by Annihlus. It was so powerful it managed to subdue both Thanos and Galactus. The storyline is often cited as one of Marvel’s best events ever.

Films like “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” and “Captain Marvel” have expanded on the MCU’s cosmic side for years. They show a delightfully weird and colorful cast of characters and locations. After introducing some of FOX’s Marvel characters like the Silver Surfer, an MCU adaptation of “Annihilation” would be the grand climax the MCU cosmos deserves.

3. Avengers vs X-Men

avengers vs xmen movie mcu endgame

In many ways, FOX’s X-Men movie franchise can be seen as a precursor to the MCU. While it had its ups and downs, you can’t say that it wasn’t ambitious. Now that Disney owns FOX, the beloved cast of mutants can finally join the MCU. And what better way to introduce them to the Avengers than to have them fight?

The “Avengers vs X-Men” comic event is confusing, overstuffed, and underwhelming. However, this doesn’t mean that the basic concept wouldn’t translate well to the MCU. Pairing up Marvel’s most famous mutants like Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and Gambit against the Avengers would be many comic fans’ dream come true.

Since Marvel has had continued success in bringing together huge casts of characters, they should have no problem with this. It’s unfortunate we wouldn’t see iconic Avengers like Iron Man or Captain America suit up to fight the mutants. However, it would nonetheless be a treat for audiences to have two of Marvel’s greatest teams duke it out.

2. House of M

scarlet witch house of m mcu endgame

The Scarlet Witch of the comics is a very different beast than the one in the MCU. After experiences devastating losses, she uses her reality-warping powers to change the world. She creates one where everyone she cares about gets their heart’s desire.

In this new world, mutants dominate the world and humans are second class citizens. She rules alongside her adoptive father Magneto and her brother Quicksilver. They try to put an end to the constant human uprisings led by revolutionaries like Luke Cage. Some characters don’t want this world to end. Spider-Man, for example, is a beloved hero in this world who is happily married to the now alive Gwen Stacy.

In the MCU, Wanda has faced incredible loss after the events of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captian America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” After Thanos brutally resurrects and then murders Vision after she was forced to kill him, Wanda was quickly snapped away by the mad titan.

When she comes back in the climactic battle of “Avengers: Endgame,” she shows a brand new ferocity in her fight against Thanos. She is nearly able to kill him singlehandedly by ripping him apart. This newly revived Wanda is clearly a broken person, which could easily lead her to do some questionable things. This may include rewriting reality. Scarlett Witch is set to appear in a new show for Disney+ called “WandaVision.” If the show follows “House of M,” we will not be disappointed.

1. Secret Wars

secret wars mcu avengers endgame

Note: This will be about Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars event and not the 1984 original miniseries.

The 2015 crossover event “Secret Wars” changed Marvel Comics forever. It brought an end and new beginning to the shared comic universe that had been running since the early 1960s. As the culmination of Jonathan Hickman‘s amazing Fantastic Four and Avengers runs, “Secret Wars” is arguably the greatest event Marvel has ever produced.

The series has Doctor Doom stealing the power of the omnipotent Beyonders, allowing him to bend reality to his will. Doom uses his new power to create Battleworld, a patchwork of various Marvel universes and timelines, all under his control. Different heroes and villains from across the Marvel Multiverse must band together and fight a hopeless battle against a god.

The Secret Wars storyline brought a rare sense of finality to comic books. While the Marvel Universe continued after “Secret Wars,” it would be one hell of a way to close out the MCU for good.

In conclusion

It’s still hard to believe that the Thanos saga has been concluded. We are happy with the conclusion, we just also want more. What stories would you like to see the MCU adapt moving forward? Let us know in the comments below!

The Game Boy turns 30. Here’s how it changed gaming forever

Here’s how the handheld console changed video games forever.

Considered to be one of the most iconic consoles ever, the Nintendo Game Boy turns 30 this year. Though it was hardly a technological powerhouse even back in the day, the lovable gray brick would go on to become one of the most popular consoles of all time. To celebrate, we’re going to take a look back at what made the Game Boy so special.

How the Game Boy was designed

gunpei yokoi game boy

The Game Boy was primarily designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the same man behind popular toys like the Ultra Hand and the Love Tester. Yokoi additionally helped create Nintendo’s original portable gaming system, the Game & Watch series, after watching a bored businessman fiddle with a calculator on a train.

The success of these toys and the Game & Watch series led to a lot of goodwill from Nintendo toward Yokoi, who had a lot of freedom in designing the Game Boy. He designed the system around the idea of “lateral thinking with withered technology”, which basically means taking slightly outdated technology and repurposing it into something new and innovative. The reasoning behind this was that the Game Boy would be built using technology that is already easily understood, affordable, and energy efficient.

The design of the Game Boy proved to be extremely popular due to its low price, long battery life, and durability. Competing portable systems like the Sega Game Gear boasted more power and color displays, but their high price point and monstrous battery consumption proved no match for the Game Boy. What really helped the Game Boy stand apart, however, was its amazing lineup of games.

The most iconic games ever, on the go!

tetris game boy

The huge library of quality Game Boy games led to an explosion in sales. Of the launch titles, Super Mario Land amazed gamers by providing a console quality Mario game on the go. However, the launch title that really catapulted the Game Boy into a pop culture icon was Tetris. The Game Boy version of the timeless puzzle game was many people’s first introduction to the series, and the game would go on to become the best selling video game of all time. Tetris was bundled with the Game Boy and became the system’s first true killer app. An even bigger killer app, however, was just over the horizon.

pokemon red blue game boy
You might’ve heard of this one before

The arrival of Pokémon Red and Blue in the late ’90s laid down the groundwork for what would become a multibillion-dollar franchise. The game’s collection of 151 lovable creatures attracted gamers from all across the world. The addictive gameplay loop of battling and catching Pokémon led to the birth of the creature RPG genre, which is a style of game that Pokémon dominates to this day. Kids on the playground spent all day trading secrets of where to catch powerful secret Pokémon. More importantly, they used the Game Boy’s Link Cable to connect their systems, allowing them to trade and battle Pokémon. Pokémon’s unique social gameplay systems encouraged players to meet up with people in real life to get the most out of the game, making the game a treasured part of many people’s childhoods. Pokémon is currently the biggest media franchise in the world, surpassing Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel.

With games like Tetris, Super Mario Land, Pokémon, and Link’s Awakening, it’s no wonder the Game Boy sold as it did. Instead of featuring neutered console ports like its competitors, the Game Boy instead focused on unique experiences that took advantage of the console’s unique portable design.

A long line of successors

game boy line

The runaway success of the Game Boy inevitably led to numerous upgrades and revisions. The Game Boy Pocket, also designed by Gunpei Yokoi, was the first of these upgrades and featured a smaller, lighter design, in addition to a true black and white screen as opposed to the original Game Boy’s green monochrome screen. It used two AAA batteries as opposed to the original Game Boy’s four and featured an LED light that would turn red when the batteries were running low. A few years later, the Japan-exclusive Game Boy Light solved the Game Boy’s most frustrating hardware problem: its unlit screen.

Next up, the Game Boy gained its first true successor in the Game Boy Color. The Game Boy Color had its own library of games that took advantage of the consoles color palette and more advanced processor, though it was still backward compatible with original Game Boy games. It was functionally a portable NES and served as the final 8-bit portable console to ever be released.

game boy color

The release of the Game Boy Advance saw a major upgrade to the Game Boy family. Featuring a wide design, a higher resolution screen, and a 32-bit processor, the Game Boy Advance dazzled audiences with SNES quality portable games. The Game Boy Advance was still backward compatible, allowing it to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

game boy advance

The Game Boy Advance received its own revision in the Game Boy Advance SP. It had a unique clamshell design, a rechargeable battery, and a backlit screen. A spinoff of the Game Boy Advance, the Game Boy Micro, was made for trendy urban audiences. By far the smallest Game Boy yet, the Micro was about the size of an NES controller and featured a backlit screen.

gba sp

When the Nintendo DS was being developed, Nintendo avoided calling it a new Game Boy upgrade. They did this because the DS was such a new and innovative piece of hardware, that if it didn’t catch on, they could continue the Game Boy line. Of course, we know now that the Nintendo DS became a smashing success, outselling even the Game Boy. But Nintendo wouldn’t be where they are now in the portable gaming space without the Game Boy paving the way. The Nintendo DS, 3DS, the Nintendo Switch, and all future Nintendo handhelds owe their existence to that iconic grey brick.

Joker, Terminator, Spawn, and more reportedly leaked for Mortal Kombat 11 DLC

Some pop culture legends are joining the fight.

Another day, another Mortal Kombat leak.

The Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11 has been datamined, revealing some interesting guest characters for future DLC. In this Reddit post, user /u/LeoNatan lists out a series of strings, as well as a step-by-step process for anyone who’d like to verify that these lists actually exist in the code. The code has been confirmed to actually exist in the game, so unless the references to these new guest characters are red herrings, they are coming to MK11 in future DLC packs. Without further ado, here are the leaked characters:

Joker

joker mortal kombat 11

Batman’s archnemesis, the Joker, will be making his Mortal Kombat debut. While the Joker was featured both in Netherrealm’s Injustice series and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, this marks the first time the Clown Prince of Crime appears in a mainline Mortal Kombat game. With the Joker standalone movie coming later this year, it makes sense for publisher Warner Bros to promote the character, just as they promoted the “Suicide Squad” characters in Injustice 2.

Though Joker is known for his murderous and sadistic tendencies, it’s interesting that DC is allowing one of their characters, even Joker, to participate in the gory mayhem of Mortal Kombat, as Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe had significantly toned down gore and neutered fatalities. Still, Joker is a perfect fit for the Mortal Kombat universe, and I can’t wait to see what kind of insane fatalities that he’ll pull off.

Leaked dialogue:

Joker: “You know, you remind me of Bats.”

Terminator: “Who?”

Joker: “Just another jerk with no sense of humor.”

Joker: “You look like a hugger, bring it in!”

Spawn: “I’ll turn you inside-out ass-first, clown.”

Joker: “I love it when they talk dirty!”

Terminator

terminator leak mortal kombat 11

The Terminator, specifically the T-800 from “T2: Judgment Day,” blasts onto the scene in Mortal Kombat 11. The franchise is obviously no stranger to cyborgs, including fan favorites like Sektor and Cyrax, so Arnie should have no trouble fitting in. Like Joker, Terminator also has a movie coming later this year in “Terminator: Dark Fate.” Judging by some of the leaked dialogue, it’s clear the developers are diehard fans of the series, as well as other Arnold films. Fun fact: Kano’s eye laser and heart rip fatalities were originally inspired by the Terminator itself, so hopefully it can return the favor.

Leaked dialogue:

Terminator: Your guns and your cape, give them to me.

Spawn: You forgot to say please.

Terminator: F*** you, asshole.

Terminator: “Take me to Sarah Connor.”

Cassie Cage: “Aw can’t, gotta get to the choppa.”

Terminator: “Now.”

Spawn

spawn leak mortal kombat 11

Arguably the most-requested guest character in Mortal Kombat history, fans can finally rest easy that Spawn is coming. An icon of ’90s edgy independent comics, Spawn is one of the industry’s quintessential anti-heroes. Spawn is additionally getting a Jamie Foxx-led movie coming in the near future, though details are scarce as of now. Spawn’s demonic aesthetic and brutal powerset make him a natural fit for Mortal Kombat, and it’ll be fun to see his interactions with other hellspawn like Scorpion.

Leaked dialogue:

Cassie Cage: “Guns, magic, you can’t just choose?”

Spawn: “I go both ways.”

Cassie Cage: “That explains the fetish gear.”

Spawn: “You’ve been to other dimensions?”

Scorpion: “Each had its own injustices.”

Spawn: “Maybe that’s why my soul still burns.”

Ash Williams

ash williams mortal kombat 11 leak

Deadites beware: the boomstick wielding, chainsaw-armed buffoon Ash Williams has entered the fray. The semi-competent hero of the “Evil Dead” trilogy and its numerous spinoffs, Ash Williams uses his quick wit, unconventional weaponry, and “charm” to put undead baddies in their place. Ash has battled everyone from zombified Marvel heroes to Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, so he should be able to handle his own against Sub-Zero and company.

Leaked dialogue:

Ash: “Fancy leathers, who’s your tailor?”

Spawn: “How’d you like to wear that smile on your ass?”

Ash: “No thanks, I only wear American denim.”

Returning Mortal Kombat characters

Guest characters weren’t the only ones that leaked. Returning kombatants include the shape-shifting villain Shang Tsung, Native American sorcerer warrior Nightwolf, the ear-piercing Sindel, and the four-armed Sheeva. Curiously, the leak also mentions Fujin as a playable character. Fujin is a demi-god like Raiden, though he controls the wind. He debuted in the infamously awful spinoff Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as a boss before becoming playable in Mortal Kombat 4.

Samsung Galaxy Fold delayed after reviewers report broken screens

For nearly $2,000, it sure is fragile…

Broken Galaxy Fold

Samsung’s new foldable Galaxy phone has been delayed due to multiple reviewers reporting broken screens.

The Samsung Galaxy Fold was supposed to be the first foldable smartphone to hit the market. Featuring a small smartphone-like display while folded and a 7.3-inch square display while unfolded, its clamshell design is intended to give users the functionality of both a phone and a tablet with a single device. Here’s a (slightly unnerving) trailer that shows off the phone’s intended functionality:

Unfortunately for Samsung, many reviewers who received the device reported problems with the screen, including flickering and outright breaking. Multiple sources, including Bloomberg and CNBC, reported their test unit breaking within a few days. A commonality was that many testers removed what they thought was a “protective film” near the top of the screen, assuming it was some sort of standard screen protector. Screen problems then followed, though how such a vital component is able to be cleanly peeled off is baffling. Moving forward, it is essential that Samsung redesigns the phone to make this film difficult/impossible to remove. Furthermore, it was disastrous on Samsung’s part not to include instructions on how to handle the phone, especially with it being an innovative piece of tech. It should also be noted that even reviewers who didn’t remove the film encountered broken screens.

Retailing for a whopping $1,980, the Galaxy Fold nonetheless received a lot of attention when it was revealed. The device is treated as a luxury item by Samsung and was planned for a limited, low-stock release on April 26. The release date is now up in the air, and Samsung plans to announce the new release date within a few weeks. According to Samsung, the preorders were flying in, but it remains to be seen if that number will drop following the news of the recent defects.

Samsung released the following statement regarding the faulty screens:

“We recently unveiled a completely new mobile category: a smartphone using multiple new technologies and materials to create a display that is flexible enough to fold. We are encouraged by the excitement around the Galaxy Fold.

While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience.

To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks.

Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.

We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold.

We value the trust of our customers’ place in us and they are always our top priority. Samsung is committed to working closely with customers and partners to move the industry forward. We want to thank them for their patience and understanding.”

Delaying a hyped up brand new product a mere week before release is embarrassing for Samsung, a company that is no stranger to recalls and controversy. Hopefully, by the time the Galaxy Fold comes out, we won’t have to worry about it exploding in our pockets.

What to know before your first Smash Ultimate tournament

Ready to play with the big boys? Here’s what you need to know.

Since Smash Ultimate’s release in December, thousands of new players have joined the Smash competitive scene. With dozens of balanced characters, improved gameplay mechanics, and hundreds of tournaments popping up, there never has been a better time to try getting into competitive Smash. For players that wish to join the scene, it’s understandable to be a little intimidated by the concept of playing Smash competitively for glory and money. If you’re interested in diving in, here are a few tips to get you started.

Pick one or two characters and stick with them

Smash Ultimate primary secondaryWith over 74 playable characters, it’s difficult to narrow down a favorite in Smash Ultimate. Play around online or with your friends and try out plenty of different characters in order to find your main. It’s common for newer competitive players to list off 10 or so characters as their favorites, which is fine, but if you’re preparing for a tournament you should try and narrow it down to two characters at most. This allows you to focus on getting better with these characters instead of splitting your efforts fruitlessly between many.

It should be noted that the characters in Smash Ultimate are balanced very well, so you can take any character you want to a local tournament (tier lists don’t really matter much at a lower level of competition, they only start really mattering once you go to larger national tournaments).

If you choose two characters instead of one, try to pick characters that cover each other’s weaknesses. For example, I mostly play as Incineroar, a slow, heavy hitter who does fine against most of the cast but struggles against hit-and-run characters like Sonic. For those situations, I have a practiced Mewtwo ready to go who can hunt down the quicker characters.

Don’t be afraid to drop a character and pick a new one if you think they aren’t working out for you, it’s very common.

Know how to practice

training mode Smash Ultimate

Knowing how to practice properly is just as important as practicing itself. The first rule you should be aware of is do not practice against the CPU. We cannot emphasize this enough. Playing exclusively against the CPU will ingrain bad habits into you and leave you unable to practice the human elements of Smash, like mind games and making predictions based on patterns.

Second, go into training mode with your character(s) of choice. Practice combos and kill setups, and take note of which percentages your opponents get KO’d at. Practice various combos to see when they kill light, medium, and heavy characters. This could save you in tournament because you’ll know “Oh, my opponent is playing Pichu and I know my up throw will kill at 100% and I should go for that.”

Third, try and practice with people in person or in online battle arenas. We already talked about CPU’s, but practicing online against random people can be a frustrating and unhelpful experience. Not only do you have to worry about lag, but people often use weird rulesets that force you to play the game in an unusual way. Elite Smash and GSP are not good representations of how skilled you are, and focusing on them will only frustrate you.

If you don’t have anyone to practice with in person, join online Smash communities on Reddit, Smashboards, and Discord and exchange friend codes. One of the best ways to find other players is through Facebook. Nearly every major U.S. city has a Smash Facebook group, so join the one relevant to your area to keep up with tournaments and find others to practice with. Practicing in private online battle arenas let you face a wide variety of people without all of the nonsense that comes with public matchmaking.

Treat your first tournament as a learning experience

Dr. Mario smash ultimate
Pictured: Dr. Mario thinking hard (just like you should be doing at your first tournament!)

It’s perfectly ok for you to be nervous heading into your first tournament. Be prepared to encounter players who are much better than you. Instead of being discouraged by losses, make sure to treat every match as a learning experience. Tournaments add a whole new set of variables to Smash that can’t be replicated at home on the couch. Nerves, mental exhaustion, and other factors happen to every player, even experienced ones. Learning how to deal with these factors is one of the biggest hurdles for new players, and they can only be overcome by continuing to go to tournaments.

The vast majority of players I’ve met at tournaments have been very kind and supportive people. They will act respectfully and give you gameplay tips if you ask them. Players who are rude, excessive, or otherwise unpleasant to be around are not tolerated in the community, so don’t worry about some clown insulting you. Be sure to network with people because you’re all Smash fans. It’s likely that you’ll make new friends, practice buddies, or maybe even doubles partners.

What to bring for your first tournament

gamecube controller smash ultimate

You should bring a small bag or knapsack to your tournament. Some useful items you could bring include:

  • Your controller of choice. Tournaments do not supply controllers, so it is essential that you bring your own.
  • A water bottle/jug. Venues can get crowded and hot, and staying hydrated will keep you at the top of your game.
  • A portable phone charger. Tournaments can often run for hours and hours so it’s important to keep your phone charged.
  • If you feel like it, bring your Nintendo Switch to get some practice in if the TVs are occupied. You can also use it to quickly exchange friend codes with other players.

Do you find this advice helpful? Is there anything else you’d like to know about getting ready for a Smash Ultimate tournament? Let us know!

How an inclusive Silicon Valley helps everyone

When tech companies look like the populations they serve, everyone wins.

If I asked you to close your eyes and picture a typical Silicon Valley employee, what would you see? You’d probably picture someone like this:

tech bro
“It’ll be the Uber of (blank). I’m telling you bro, it’s gonna be big.”

Shown above is a tech bro: a white straight man in his 20s or 30s who dresses casually and works hard as a coder/engineer/entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. Unlike the geeks of old, these tech bros aren’t sniveling poindexters who can barely squeak out a word. Tech bros are more confident, modern, stylish, and generally more bro-y. Their culture combines the ruthlessness of entrepreneurship with modern digital acumen and has produced some of the most popular digital products of today including Facebook, Twitter, Snap, and Uber.

The problem with tech bro culture is that it alienates anyone who doesn’t fit into the archetype. People of gender, racial, and sexual minorities just can’t seem to find themselves accepted by Silicon Valley on a large scale. But why does this happen? Why should we care? And what can be done about it?

And before you say “We should just hire based on skill, not on race/sex,” minorities in tech are not equally given the chance to be competitive.

Why Silicon Valley mostly white and male

Pictured: Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) as depicted in “The Social Network.” The film paints a painfully accurate picture of tech bro culture.

It’s easy to think that Silicon Valley is a cultural institution built by white males, for white males, but that’s not entirely accurate. According to Emily Chang (author of “Brotopia: Breaking Up the Boys’ Club of Silicon Valley”) women played an instrumental role in the early American computing industry that would eventually become Silicon Valley. They served as vital programmers for NASA and the military, including on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

But by the time the late ’60s/the early ’70s rolled around, big companies started using aptitude and personality tests (themselves designed by straight white men) to find ideal programmers, making it significantly more difficult for women and minorities to be accepted in the industry and find work. Ever since, the technological powerhouse known as Silicon Valley has been dominated by what would become the tech bro.

Moving forward, Silicon Valley morphed into an institution that constantly worked to maintain its own demographics. This does not mean that it was always a conscious decision (i.e. straight up deciding not to hire someone because they’re black/female/gay) but one that plays off of generations of systemic biases against minorities.

For various reasons, minorities of all kinds are discouraged from going into STEM fields. Whether that be due to economic disenfranchisement or social biases (women being encouraged to study more “traditional” fields), there are fewer minorities joining STEM than there are white males. In terms of simple statistics, for every minority that graduates in a STEM field, there are dozens of white male graduates with similar qualifications, further narrowing the chance of getting hired.

A common counterargument to Silicon Valley’s homogeneity is, “What about Asians? There are so many Asians/Indians in tech!” While it’s true that there is a significant Asian/South Asian demographic in Silicon Valley, according to a study called The Illusion of Asian Success, Asian tech employees are the least likely demographic to obtain leadership roles. Despite outnumbering white men in certain areas, Asian employees have 3x fewer executive positions in Silicon Valley than white men. In Silicon Valley, power is consolidated in the tech bro demographic.

Why diversity in tech helps everyone

diversity

When online platforms are designed exclusively by white men, they are often unintentionally designed exclusively for white men. Twitter co-founder Evan Williams told Emily Chang that if there had been women present on the original design team, Twitter wouldn’t have such a problem with trolling and harassing women (as well as everyone else) that it does today. The original design team simply did not factor how the technology would affect people outside of their demographic because they had no outside perspective.

Similarly, Amazon is currently developing highly detailed facial recognition software to sell to the U.S. military. While the software can successfully identify the face of a white man with 99% accuracy, it only successfully identifies the face of dark-skinned women 70% of the time, something that could lead to false accusations or profiling. The reason the software is so much more adept at identifying white men is that it was designed by white men, and therefore, its application for white men is given considerably more weight in its design.

While these kinds of mistakes are usually unintentional and not malicious, they highlight a problem in how non-diverse dev teams create software for their own demographic. In today’s interconnected digital world, the best software should be designed to serve as diverse a crowd as possible. Silicon Valley has not only a moral obligation to diversify its workforce, but a functional obligation, too.

Population statistics indicate that by the year 2040 black people and Hispanic people will no longer be minorities in the U.S. If mass-produced digital technologies are still created solely by tech bros by then, then the design of their products will no longer reflect the needs or wants of the population. A diversity of demographics leads to a diversity of perspective, and a diversity of perspective leads to better products at the end of the day.

How Silicon Valley can be more inclusive

equality in tech

The key to achieving external diversity is to make sure your company is inclusive internally. What this essentially means is that simply hiring diverse workers won’t solve the inclusivity problem. If minority workers are brought into a workforce that is explicitly designed for tech bros, they may be ostracized and held back from their true potential.

Take Uber, for example. After making headlines for various HR scandals that stemmed from a non-inclusive and non-diverse workplace, the company focused hard on hiring minority employees. According to former Uber recruiter Pranam Lipinski, this led to even worse working conditions for minorities as they were thrust into a workplace that didn’t account for or appreciate their inclusion. Hiring diverse people doesn’t magically make a workplace inclusive, a company must be inclusive from the inside out.

So how can a company strive to be more inclusive internally? One solution is to make company policies that specifically address minority concerns but benefit all employees. For example, studies have shown that women and minorities are far more likely to be interrupted during company meetings than white men. Instituting a company-wide “No interruptions during meetings” rule would solve this. While this rule would help minority employees be able to speak freely, it doesn’t actually silence white male employees either. It gives everyone a chance to speak their mind.

The most successful inclusivity programs don’t single out minorities. Singling out minority employees applies pressure to them to act as a “model minority”, and can make them targets of contempt.  Emily Chang spoke of tech conferences where every woman in the room was asked to stand up and name themselves, something that, while done with good intentions, ended up making them feel alienated. The best inclusivity programs address the concerns of minority employees without explicitly calling them out.

Every tech startup in Silicon Valley wants to change the world. They want to rock the boat, make their mark, and change the status quo. How can a company truly claim to be an innovator or a disruptor if they don’t disrupt the racial and gender stranglehold over Silicon Valley? You can’t change the world without using the perspective of the global community. Ultimately, the goal of inclusivity is not to have minorities succeed in spite of the majority, but alongside the majority.

How to avoid eye strain after staring at screens all day

Discover what all these screens are doing to your eyes.

eye strain

Have you ever sat back and thought about how many hours a day you spend staring at a screen? No matter what age you are, or what lifestyle you live, the answer is probably “several.” The invention of screens that pump blue light into our eyes is an obstacle that the human eye could have never prepared for, even after millions of years of evolution. But what exactly is blue light and what effect does it have on your eyes?

Though blue light is often used by digital devices due to its environmental friendliness, it has been linked to negative side effects. It is unnatural for human beings to be exposed directly to the kind of concentrated blue light a screen provides for hours a day. Symptoms of eye strain caused by staring at a screen include red or irritated eyes, headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Additionally, of all kinds of light, blue light is the one that most powerfully suppresses melatonin (a hormone in the body that helps it sleep at night). Obviously, a lack of sleep can cause or exacerbate all kinds of health issues.

We live in a digital age, so for many people being exposed to screens all day is unavoidable. Whether it be for their jobs or for their personal lives, it’s difficult to keep up in today’s fast-paced world without digital technology. Here are some ways you can continue to use your digital devices while avoiding the harmful effects of eye strain.

Protective Eyewear

blue light glasses

Once manufacturers were able to make blue light glasses that look like everyday glasses instead of yellow-tinted monstrosities, they really took off. Certain eyewear companies offer the ability to include blue-light-blocking tech in your glasses for an additional fee, while others offer standalone blue-light glasses.

Do the glasses actually work? Most consumers say that they feel less fatigue and digital eye strain while using the glasses. Researchers haven’t made definitive conclusions about blue light glasses as the technology has only gained popularity fairly recently. You can find a pair for as low as $15 however, and researchers have said that for the average consumer a low-end pair works just as well as a high-end one. For all the trouble we put our eyes through nowadays, for only $15 certainly it’s worth a shot.

Adjust your display

f.lux

If you’d rather adjust the display of your device instead of wearing eyewear (though you can do both) there are several programs that can automatically work to reduce eye strain. The most popular one by far for desktop computers is f.lux, a free and amazing program that automatically adjusts your display based on your location and the time of day.

The program gradually adjusts the display of your computer to show warmer colors the closer you get to sunset, allowing your eyes to better adjust to nighttime. At sunrise, the program will restore your display’s original colors. If you’re doing a color-sensitive activity at your computer, such as watching a movie or doing graphic design, you can disable f.lux for as long or as short as you need to. Installing f.lux will make you wish you got it years ago.

For macOS users, Night Shift can be activated to give your device similar functionality to f.lux. You simply set your usual wake and bedtimes and how warm you want your screen colors to be and your device display will automatically adjust throughout the day. For Android users, a preview version of f.lux is available.

Follow the 20/20/20 rule

20 20 20 rule

Lastly, the simplest thing you can do to reduce digital eye strain is to follow the 20/20/20 rule. Created by the Vision Council, the 20/20/20 rule states that every 20 minutes you spend looking at a screen, take a 20-second break and look at something that’s 20 feet away.

The 20/20/20 rule helps your vision by readjusting your focal point and refreshing your eyes. To easily view something 20 feet away without going crosseyed, try looking out your window.

Amazon is rumored to be working on Alexa-powered AirPod competitor

Can Amazon overthrow Apple in the great earbud war?

Once again, Apple has set a trend, and once again, the other tech giants are trying to outdo them.

It’s no secret that the hugely popular and frequently-memed AirPods are a hit with consumers. Wireless earbuds are a rapidly growing market, with over 12.5 million pairs being sold in the last quarter. AirPods make up a whopping 60% of those sales. Amazingly, AirPods made up 7% of Apple’s total revenue last year.

Airpods

Rumors suggest that Amazon is working on creating its own line of earbuds, hoping to stand out in the crowding industry by including its voice assistant Alexa in every pair.

While AirPods contain Siri integration, Alexa is significantly more versatile, which could prove a key selling point for Amazon’s earbuds. Alexa has been a key part of the e-commerce giant’s strategy recently, and the company hopes to integrate the technology into as many devices as possible.

Amazon is striving for the simplistic aesthetic and clipless design that made AirPods popular, but with better audio quality. The earbuds will reportedly come with a charging case similar to the one used with AirPods.

The earbuds are reported to be released in the second half of 2019.
