The anticipation for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 continues to grow following the undeniable success of its predecessor, the original Switch. With industry executives confirming their support for the new console, Nintendo is expected to once again redefine market expectations. Renowned leaders in the sector, such as Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, have expressed their enthusiasm for the arrival of the Switch 2, highlighting its importance in the future of video games.

Spencer, all good words for Nintendo

In a recent interview, Spencer mentioned that he has been corresponding with Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, in which he highlighted his appreciation for the company’s innovations. “I was exchanging emails with Furukawa and gave him a big congratulations. Nintendo is a very important part of this industry”, Spencer indicated. His multitude of praises towards the company reinforces the idea that Nintendo’s impact on the sector remains significant and constantly evolving.

Additionally, an agreement has been formalized between Nintendo and Microsoft to release Call of Duty series games on the new console, suggesting that we might see more Xbox titles on the Switch 2. Although the arrival of games like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves has not been confirmed, Tom Warren, a journalist from The Verge, states that there is a high potential for these titles to be available at the console’s launch.

With each new generation, Nintendo has demonstrated its ability to surprise the most demanding gamers. The Switch 2, with its larger screen and other technological innovations, could continue this tradition of success. The mix of innovation and support from other companies could consolidate Nintendo’s position as an undisputed leader in the video game industry, and expectations continue to grow as more details about this new console are revealed.

Someone has bombed Phil Spencer in ‘Fallout 76’ (and they don’t feel guilty)

Until someone has decided to relentlessly bombard a particular camp: P3. That is, Phil Spencer’s. Again and again. And alongside him, the whole community has followed suit, as a way of telling him what they think about his executive decisions: you shut down our games, we bombard your (virtual) house.

This week, Phil Spencer once again revealed himself as one of the biggest villains in the video game industry. The closure of Bethesda studios, including Tango, the creators of ‘Hi-Fi Rush’, has left many players feeling powerless, who have only been able to express their disagreement through ‘Helldivers 2’-style criticism bombardments… or by directly attacking the Microsoft executive.

He is a Philcionado

Obviously, he hasn’t been hit with eggs in the face or challenged to a boxing match: it has been much more subtle. And it is that currently the ‘Fallout’ saga is experiencing an impressive resurgence, as we all know, thanks to the Amazon Prime Video series. ‘Fallout 76’, in particular, as an online multiplayer game, is receiving a new wave of fans, who generally act in good faith.

Until one has decided to mercilessly bomb a particular camp: P3. That is, the one of Phil Spencer. Over and over again. And along with him, the whole community has followed his example, as a way of telling him what they think about his executive decisions: you close our games, we bomb your (virtual) house. Besides, it’s not exactly easy to access nuclear missiles in the game: you have to do a good handful of side missions to get there.

If you want to do something like this, it is certainly because you have thought about it thoroughly and calmly. When interviewed, the author of the initial attacks, real1090jake, stated that it is nothing personal, just “a personal goal after finishing the game”. In fact, he had been thinking about it for weeks and now, finally, he saw the perfect moment. Honestly? This is the least Spencer deserves after laying off so many professionals. It seems like too little to me.

According to the CEO of Xbox, the blame for the massive layoffs lies with the market

According to Phil Spencer, CEO of Xbox, the reason for having to lay off 1,900 people is that the market is not in the situation he would like.

Seeing an executive take the blame for something is like black holes: we know it happens somewhere because of the effects it has, but it is invisible to the human eye. No matter the decisions they make, they always have reasons to do so. Even if the rest of humanity sees clearly that more than reasons, they are excuses. Something in which it seems that Xbox CEO, Phil Spencer, is not the exception.

In an interview with Chris Plante from Polygon, Phil Spencer has talked about the state of the video game industry. Explaining that there are now many more risks when it comes to producing a AAA release, he emphasized that the development costs and audience expectations make the playing field very different from years ago. With publishers becoming increasingly reluctant to take risks, as where it used to be necessary to sell hundreds of thousands of copies to recoup costs or achieve profits, now it is necessary to sell millions.

As it is well known, this situation has led to a much more timid growth of the industry than expected within it. Something that is being settled with the dismissal of thousands of people, including 1,900 layoffs at Xbox Games Studios shortly after closing the purchase of Activision Blizzard. Something that Plante asked about and Spencer decided to answer in the most worrying way possible.

In Spencer’s words, the motivation for these layoffs is because “we are a business. I’ve said it over and over again. I don’t have the luxury of not having to run a business that grows in profits within Microsoft”. Stating that the problem is that the video game industry is “an industry that is not growing”, he believes that “it can grow and will grow again”, emphasizing that “we should all reflect on it and think about it”. A comment devoid of any sensitivity, considering that the human impact has been two thousand layoffs under his leadership after the industry’s biggest acquisition. Especially considering that it is not true that there is no growth in the industry.

Furthermore, he is optimistic about the Xbox brand, at least in terms of the entity. Stating that this industry situation is what has led them to seek to launch their games on other platforms, he also states that “the console market has not grown in the last year”, which is not true, in addition to the change in consumption habits of Generation Z, who do not see the Xbox as a device to connect to the television, which is also not true, leads them to find it more interesting to bring their games to all kinds of platforms.

The result of the interview is Phil Spencer trying to justify firing 1,900 people and an unpopular change in business strategy by claiming that the industry has not grown according to their own expectations. Something very different from not growing at all. This demonstrates how, at the end of the day, the problem with the video game industry is not its lack of growth, but the need of some people to justify their mistakes.

Grim Revelation from Phil Spencer Spells Trouble for Xbox Series S Players

Phil Spencer has thrown Xbox Series S under the bus, stating that games don’t have to be the same as on Xbox Series X.

We all know that promises are carried away by the wind. In the business world, a promise without a watertight contract is something we should never rely on, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be disappointed. The word still means something. Especially the word to the consumer. But it seems that some people have forgotten that. Especially when, because of those promises, they have to end up breaking them to avoid damaging their own businesses.

This is something that has just happened during GamesCom. Among other Microsoft announcements, they have announced that, despite initially being stated for a 2024 release, Baldur’s Gate 3 will be coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in 2023. But, of course, with a significant cost. The Xbox Series S version will not have split-screen multiplayer.

Steam DOWNLOAD

This is strikingly notable because the reason the Xbox version wasn’t initially planned to release alongside the PlayStation 5 version was precisely due to the lack of feature parity between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions. While its older counterpart had no issues in this regard, Larian Studios couldn’t efficiently execute split-screen gameplay on the Xbox Series S. This was something that Michael Douse, the Head of Publishing at Larian Studios, mentioned on X, the social network formerly known as Twitter. He stated that Microsoft wouldn’t allow them to release the game on the console until feature parity was achieved between both consoles. This condition was necessary for games to be approved by the company.

However, things have taken an about-face. Now, Phil Spencer has declared that neither he nor anyone at Microsoft has ever stated that Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S must have any form of feature parity in the games released for their consoles. This directly contradicts the reasons provided by Larian Studios up to this point.

Even if we accept what Spencer has said, this is dreadful news for Xbox Series S owners. After all, the head of the brand has stated that if other studios want to release scaled-down versions of their games on the Series S, they will allow it. Or at least that’s what they’ve implied. There’s no reason for a studio not to exclude a specific mode or feature from their game on the Series S due to its lower power.

Ultimately, as Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, has stated, they have never aimed for parity between the Xbox consoles. In fact, there never has been. As evidence, he cited how many games on Xbox Series X have ray tracing while the same games lack it on Xbox Series S. According to Spencer, this demonstrates that the policy of parity never existed in the first place. However, regardless of the rationale, this doesn’t reflect well on them. Particularly when his words suggest that Xbox Series X users will always have a better and more complete version of games compared to what will be available to Xbox Series S users.

This sets a terrible precedent that doesn’t benefit either Xbox or Phil Spencer. It benefits them in the sense that they won’t gift Sony a console exclusive deal with Baldur’s Gate 3, but it harms them by leaving Xbox Series S users in the lurch. Shamelessly telling them that they own a secondary console for which it’s not guaranteed that all games will arrive in the same manner as on other consoles. Even if they were promised otherwise. This creates a dreadful impression and it shouldn’t surprise us if it eventually comes back to haunt them.
