The 5 best apps to survive a zombie apocalypse

If the zombie apocalypse broke out today, 5 apps could save your life. Don’t wait until the walking dead are shambling your way. Download these apps now!

There are two types of people in this world: those who prepared for the zombie apocalypse, and those who get eaten.

The undead have been around in popular culture for decades now. While we’ve all enjoyed watching determined survivors stand against never-ending waves of flesh-hungry zombies, we don’t always take the time to prepare ourselves. One day you might be the one holed up in an abandoned shopping mall. So ask yourself one question: are you ready?

Fortunately, we live in a world where access to technology means help is always at your fingertips, and here at Softonic, we’ve taken the time to put together a list of apps that would be most helpful in the event of an apocalyptic zombie outbreak.

1. SOS Flashlight

It’s highly likely that your phone has a flashlight, which will help you navigate dark areas when the power is out. But what if you see a group of survivors and need to get their attention? Shouting is all well and good until the zombie horde descends on you. Instead, this helpful little app will let you flash out the international sign for distress (SOS).

S… O… damn, the zombies are here!

2. Motion Detector

At some point, you have to sleep. And in a world overrun by zombies, there’s more to worry about than your partner stealing the all the blankets, or getting up in the dark and stubbing your toe.

To sleep peacefully, safe in the knowledge that your safe-house hasn’t been overrun by the undead, you need this handy little app. Set your smartphone camera to overlook a door or window and it will raise an alarm if anything moves – it’ll even take a photo of what it saw.

3. Maps.me

For most apps, if your mobile data runs out, or the signal’s bad, it’s game over. You might as well sprinkle some herbs on your head and let the zombie horde enjoy feasting on your brains à la provençal.

Fortunately, this app allows you to browse highly compressed, offline map data, with full GPS support, offline search, and routing by foot and car. You can bookmark safe-houses and useful locations, and then share them with other survivors.

4. First Aid

While this app won’t help if one of your group gets bitten, it’s worth having when you’re hurt. There’s likely to be a lot of dangerous ground and territory to cover, and you don’t want a simple cut or sprain slowing you down, or turning into something far more deadly. Instead, use the Red Cross’s First Aid Training app to deal with all minor injuries.

5. Zombies! Run

If there’s one thing that separates the living and the dead in a post-apocalyptic world, it’s cardio. When you’re running for your life, being able to do a 5K could save your life.

This app helps you get a head start. You are a runner en-route to one of humanity’s last remaining outpost. As you run, you gather supplies and rescue other survivors. Just be ready to speed up whenever you hear zombies on your tail. And when the apocalypse comes, just remember that you don’t always need to outrun the zombies, you just need to outrun at least one other survivor.

That completes our round-up. Hopefully, you’ll find something here that will help you and your friends get ready for the rise of the undead. Stay safe out there, survivors!

Games that could have great Battle Royale modes

What if you could play a Battle Royale mode in all of your favorite games? Here are the ones we think would be the most fun.

Fortnite and Player Unknown Battlegrounds (PUBG) opened the floodgates for the Battle Royale genre, which involves exploration, scavenging, and – most importantly – a battle to be the last person standing. Since this genre rose in popularity so rapidly, we decided to ask the exciting question: what games could actually have great Battle Royale modes? Here are a few games we believe fit the bill.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Battle Royale

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched as the Nintendo Switch’s flagship title. Despite being a fantastic game in its own right – the storytelling, graphics, and gameplay are wonderful – the game could be perfect for the battle Royale genre.

First, Breath of the Wild comes with exploration and scavenging built in. The game’s main character, Link, begins the game by wandering into an open world with nothing more than a few clothes and an electronic tablet. From there, the player constantly needs to grab food for health, shields for defense, and weapons to fight off numerous baddies spread across the frontier landscape. A Battle Royale in this environment would become an exciting fight for survival, where victory could easily depend on the number of apples you baked before wading into a skirmish.

Second, the battle mechanics are both intuitive and versatile: there are many ways to fight, including sword and shield, bow and arrow, or environmental exploits. Thanks to the ingenious weapon durability system, a Battle Royale mode would have players on their toes, carefully choosing the right weapon for a specific tussle or setting clever traps.

Third and finally, the landscape is beautiful and diverse. Without even mentioning geography and natural landmarks, certain areas of the game require preparation for extreme cold or heat – and if you’re in the Gerudo desert, that could mean both, depending on the time of day! With so many environments, a player’s tactics would need to adapt based on the environment, and each encounter would be radically different.

Halo Battle Royale

The ongoing storyline of Halo indisputably inspired gamers across multiple generations, but also contains a number of characteristics that would make for a great battle Royale game.

First, the game looks great. This came with some setbacks when the newest title, Halo 5, dropped the series’ traditional split screen capabilities to improve graphic quality. The point being: Halo would look provide a welcome change to the Battle Royale landscape. Whereas PUBG boasts a decently realistic look and Fortnite has its flashy skin, Halo’s slick, futuristic environments could be a welcome addition. Imagine the final One v. One, both players running through red, sandstone caverns of Sanghelios or navigating the ruins of an enormous forerunner outpost. We’re sold.

Finally, add Halo’s fast and furious battle techniques, where assassinations and devastating weapons are already part of the fun. This lends itself well to a Hunger Games mode, considering the game’s weapons have an incredible range of power, stretching from nerfed weapons like the battle rifle to God-smiters such as the Prophet’s Bane energy sword.

Minecraft Battle Royale

Do it for the YouTube streamers! Minecraft boasts a simplistic but engrossing open world that involves surviving perils, mining blocks, and building everything imaginable. There are already servers for people to connect, PvP is certainly possible, and a few dedicated Battle Royale destinations are available, but there’s been no move to create an official Battle Royale out of Minecraft.

We think that’s a shame, although there are a few understandable drawbacks.

First, the digging. Battle Royale games are already plagued with folks who hide until the end and win their match with one kill; some would say that’s a coward’s victory. In Minecraft, they could easily develop hideouts and wait until the real fight to be over. To solve that, we’d suggest a time penalty for staying underground in the same general place for too long. Simplistic, but with enough tinkering, it just might work.

Second, the speed. Minecraft is intentionally slow: the soundtrack is calming and mellow so players feel a sense of relaxation as time slips away. Since the real game encourages players to spend hours in one cave alone, something would have to be done to speed things up: one hit mining, quicker movement speed, rapid crafting. With things like this in place, Minecraft: Battle Royale becomes an exciting possibility.

[BONUS] Corey in the House Battle Royale

What is “Corey in the House”? Was the game fun? What was it about? What devices was it available for? Personally, we’re not really sure about any of these questions. However this meme, posted to Reddit by user TotallyNotTundra, is just too good to not make “Corey in the House: Battle Royale.” Make it happen, Cap’n.

Top 10 Games of 2018 (so far)

By 2018, we totally expected we’d have flying cars. We don’t. But what we do have are some of the most exciting video games ever created. Here is our list of our favorite new entries for 2018 so far…

DragonBall FighterZ (January 26) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

The ultimate Dragonball Z experience. Period. The previous releases in the Dragonball series have been plagued by junky controls and an overly cell-shaded aesthetic, but Dragonball FighterZ is the game fans will want to get their hands on. With an engaging storyline, smooth transitional gameplay, and a fantastic art style, this has been a certified hit. Though the multiplayer is lacking a bit with its matchmaking algorithm, there’s enough content packed into Dragonball FighterZ to keep you occupied for a lengthy amount of time.

Monster Hunter World (January 26) (PS4, Xbox One)

Kicking the year off, Monster Hunter World made its way to North America where it saw rave reviews. Its tactical, almost Souls-style gameplay makes every move crucial to survival. The Capcom product runs well on the PS4 with beautiful graphics and the occasional framerate drop, but with over 100+ hours of gameplay, if you’re not still playing it, it’s never too late to join the community.

Shadow of the Colossus (February 6) (PS4)

Shadow of the Colossus was a quiet beast for a decade and a half. You take control of Wander and ride across a forgotten expanse to defeat Colossi. Its initial release in 2005 saw near-perfect reviews and it’s a blessing to have this title come to current gen consoles. For its release, the gameplay of pitting David vs. Goliath was unexplored. However, Team Ico absolutely nailed the experience and cemented their product in the history books. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this game.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance (February 13) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

Much unlike The Witcher and Skyrim, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a medieval simulation. With weighty combat and defensive moves, Kingdom Come strives to bring the most realistic medieval experience to video game fans all over the world. It’s a step in a risky direction, but if you love engaging RPGs, be sure to give this game a try.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition (February 20) (PC)

The Real-Time Strategy titan returns to PC with upgraded graphics and a heavy dose of nostalgia. Most everything in AoE: Definitive Edition is the same as its older generations. You’re still building a civilization to conquer a procedurally generated landscape via force and diplomacy. If you’re a fan of AoE, you know what you’re paying for. If you’re new, this is the best place to start. An old legend polished and re-released for a new generation.

A Way Out (March 23) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

An ambitious title from relatively new developers, Hazelight, A Way Out puts the player into a split-screen, dialogue-driven story of prison life, escape and survival. The story is told strictly through a split-screen experience. It’s an ingenious creative device that ropes the player in immediately and never lets its foot off the gas.

Far Cry 5 (March 27) (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

The Far Cry series has seen its ups and downs (Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal). Ubisoft has turned a new corner recently, putting more emphasis on the actual content of their games, rather than milking a map structure and bland quest objectives. As with most Far Cry games, you know what you’re in for. But with a setting rife with murderous evangelicals in the United States, this is a Far Cry game that we haven’t quite experienced yet.

God of War (April 20) (PS4)

The juggernaut of 2018, to say the least. At its E3 reveal in 2016, the gaming world went bonkers. A new God of War game is enough to make any PlayStation owner salivate, but the newest installment brought a two-year hype-fest. Gone are the Twin Blades, but here to stay is a tremendous axe and an ever-present, but never-in-the-way companion. This time around, God of War is a story-based experience at its core and the IP has never been better.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice (April 11) (Xbox One)

A sleeper hit of 2018, Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice brings real-world issues into a virtual world. The main character is plagued with mental issues, most prominently Schizophrenia, and the story unfolds as you battle your inner demons and put past trauma to rest in a landscape of nightmares. While this title was available for Windows and PS4 last year, it’s a welcome addition to the Xbox library in 2018.

Quantic Dream has done it again. They have created an original story with top-tier graphics and gameplay mechanics. Focusing around three main androids in a future Detroit, the player battles with complex decisions and an expansive decision tree that warrants multiple playthroughs. If you liked Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls, you’re going to fall head over heels for this title.

Top 5 Battle Royale Games

In the past year or so, Battle Royale games have dominated the gaming industry. Fortnite has become a cultural phenomenon and AAA developers are taking note. Both EA and Activision are incorporating Battle Royale modes in the newest Battlefield and Call of Duty titles.

With Battle Royale, every match is different. Even if you are repeating similar steps when entering into mid-game and end-game. It’s a rinse and repeat process, with tactics being refined during and after every match. There’s nothing more exhilarating than being caught in a firefight and shouting at or with your friends.

All of the games on this list have the same core gameplay mechanics. You spawn at a random point on the map, plummet to the ground to scrounge for supplies, and survive 99 other people trying to kill you as a deadly circle shrinks your map. It’s this new frantic and time-sensitive gameplay that propelled Battle Royale into the public spotlight. Let’s get down to business and talk about the Top Five Battle Royale games available right now.

H1Z1

Riding the wave of Battle Royale modes, H1Z1 has taken the PlayStation 4 by storm. Created by PlayerUnknown and Sony Online Entertainment, H1Z1 was originally released before the massively successful PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds). It hid in the shadows of Steam catalogs as an early access title. H1Z1 is much different than the current flurry of Battle Royale games. While most developers tend to use their art style as a gimmick, H1Z1 graphics are slightly above run-of-the-mill. The lighting can be great at points and the atmospheric effects, such as fog, make for very interesting and heart-racing endgame. But, you’re not coming to H1Z1 for the graphics. You’re joining the community and staying for a long time because of the streamlined gameplay mechanics.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)

The one that started it all. Well, technically Arma kicked off the Battle Royale movement, but PUBG brought it to fame. Launching early 2017, PUBG has reigned supreme over free-to-play titles on Steam, and most recently, mobile phones. In the hierarchy of realistic gameplay, PUBG sits near the top of the pyramid. There are no frills to this game. It plays much like H1Z1, but without the weapon upgrades, poisonous gas, and massive vehicle mayhem during end-game. If you’re looking for a bare-bones Battle Royale, look no further, PUBG delivers in all facets.

ARMA 3

ARMA 3 is the grandfather of all Battle Royale games. The first iteration developed by PlayerUnknown in 2013, Arma 3 is a realistic military simulation set in a fictional warzone where players vie for territorial dominance. Its claim to fame came from community mods and an open-code platform, where players had free reign to alter gameplay as they saw fit. What came from the incessant modding is a game that, on the surface, looks like a standard military simulator. However, take a look under the hood and it is deeply complex, with a different control scheme for all types of vehicles and an adaptive, intelligent player-base. There is a steep learning curve to ARMA, but the reward is countless hours of fresh gameplay.

Survival Games: Battle Royale

First things first; this is not Minecraft, as the graphic would have you believe. Survival Games takes a different approach to Battle Royale, which is refreshing, to say the least. Its standout feature is the procedurally generated map. Meaning, at the start of each match, the arena will be generated randomly, having few, if any, similarities. If you’re a fan of Minecraft and BR modes, do yourself a favor, and give this game a go. You might be surprised.

Fortnite

Last, but certainly not least, Fortnite. The cultural juggernaut that spawned dance crazes, televised news stories about video-game addiction, and propelled professional streamers to celebrity status. This is the game that all other BR games wish they could hold a candle to. With a massive following of near 3 million players each month, Fortnite is easily the King of Battle Royale. What separates Fortnite from its competitors is its art style key building gameplay mechanic. If you haven’t heard about Fortnite by now, jump in and play a few rounds. But, keep in mind, you might be behind the 8-ball a bit. What was supposed to be a fort building end-game and devolved into a spastic build-off to see who can construct the tallest tower. In more ways than one, it’s lonely at the top.

How to master building in Fortnite

One of the keys to creating quick builds like this is having a good pool of supplies on hand. Your pickaxe is your best friend. The second you land, in addition to looking for chests and weapons, your first order of business should be to equip your pickaxe and start breaking down anything in arm’s reach. The last thing you want is to be caught in the middle of a battle with no supplies to create defenses.

If you’re coming over from first-person shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield, it may be tempting to play Fortnite as just another shooter. It’s certainly possible to achieve Victory Royale by blasting your way to the top, but skilled Fortnite players know that mastering the game’s building mechanic is the key to getting consistent wins.

Fortnite: Battle Royale Download Fortnite: Battle Royale
10

The first and most important strategy is to know and master your building controls. PC players do have a slight leg up here; having the keyboard allows players to bind each individual structure to a specific key. This allows for quick, rapid-fire building. On console, switching to and learning the Builder Pro control scheme early is a must. Similar to PC, this binds each type of construction to a specific button press, allowing for building on the fly.

So, why is fast building so important? When you run into another player and the bullets start flying, your first instinct might be to start shooting back. Returning fire might seem like a no-brainer, but if you train yourself to build first and shoot later, you’ll be cultivating a habit that will get you much further in the game than relying on firepower alone. Throwing up a quick wall when the bullets start flying puts an extra layer of defense between you and your enemies, allowing you time to regroup and equip your best weapons for a counterattack, or giving you the opportunity to flee to safety if needed.

You can even take this strategy one step further by throwing up a ramp on top of the wall that you just built. Like Obi-Wan Kenobi, using ramps this way will give you the high ground, allowing you to fire down on your enemies before retreating back behind the defenses of your wall.

Building supplies themselves also have their own advantages and disadvantages. Wood is weaker than other materials like metal, but allows for faster building. When it comes to those unexpected encounters where fast building is the difference between life and death, wood is the material you want on hand to throw up those quick defensive walls. Steel and brick can take more hits than wood, but they’re slower to build. Though they are useful for a wall in a pinch, they really excel when it comes to building forts.

Forts will start to spring up late in the game, when the storm closes in and the field has been narrowed down to a handful of players. It might be tempting to build your defenses early in the game and hunker down to wait out the battle, but unless you get lucky, chances are you’ll be pouring time and materials into a bunker that you’ll have to abandon as the map gets smaller. You may have the best fort in the game, but it isn’t going to be of any use on the other side of the storm wall. A more prudent strategy is to stockpile materials and wait until the map closes in before starting to do any serious building.

When that time comes, good defenses are key to making it through the last chaotic moments of a battle. In those final moments, building a fort can prevent enemies from sneaking up behind you and allow you to attack enemies from the safety of your own defenses. This is when you want to start building metal or brick walls, traps, and ramps to create your last line of defense. As stated before, making sure you stockpile enough materials throughout the game is essential to making sure you aren’t caught without supplies in this essential stage. Good fortifications at the end of the game can mean the difference between Victory Royale and a frustrating third place finish.

Someone once said that the best defense is a good offense, but in Fortnite, the opposite tends to be true. Players who learn the art of defensive building and master the techniques outlined above will also become masters of the battlefield.

Halo VI: Return of the Spartan

Halo 5’s Forge was heralded as a groundbreaking addition to the Master Chief saga. It has given fans of the Halo series the chance to build their own levels to put each other through their paces. Since Forge’s release, we’ve seen some sick levels created. We’ve had the likes of “Elixir” by Sikamikanico set on the homeworld of the Covenant Elites, “Echoes” by Spirit in Black that takes its inspiration the levels of Halo: Combat Evolved, and even “Nautilus” by Ascend Hyperion that is set underwater!

We’re not here to talk about levels though. As well as levels, fans have also used Forge to recreate scenes and set pieces from some of the greatest pop culture ever. We’re here to celebrate some incredible work done by Reddit user u/NeomiCrystal.

NeomiCrystal has recreated the Sarlacc Pit from Return of Jedi, complete Jabba’s flying palace. We love it, and with a successor to Halo 5 announced at E3 maybe, just maybe, we are about to see Halo VI: Return of the Spartan.

Simcity Guide and tutorial: Best 10 Buildit Tips

SimCity, the fifth installment of the city-building simulator from Maxis, appeared packed full of new features and options for managing your city. In fact, there are so many new features that you might feel a bit overwhelmed at the beginning.

In this simple SimCity tutorial, intended for those who aren’t familiar with the SimCity universe, I’ll give you ten basic tips and tricks to start effectively building your city so that you aren’t in danger of making the mistakes that so many first-time mayors make.

What is SimCity?

SimCity is a strategy video game that incorporates open-world settings. You’ll start with a piece of land, developing infrastructure to grow residential, commercial, and industrial entities. While the most popular version is on Windows, many people also enjoy the mobile version called SimCity BuildIt. As your city grows, you’ll need to handle natural disasters, crime, education, and many other factors.

What is the latest SimCity game?

The latest version of SimCity was released for Windows in 2013, and it was the last in the franchise due to critically negative reviews. In 2014, SimCity BuildIt hit mobile phones as a port, with most of the functionality changed and the necessity to collect resources from your buildings to upgrade them.

Best Simcity buildit tips

Let’s head straight into our SimCity tips and tricks to ensure your success as mayor of the town.

1. Good planning is important

When some people start a new SimCity game, they tend to construct highways and areas without pre-planning. Then, when it comes time to create intersections, they’re forced to demolish buildings, resulting in a decreased population or service. My advice: before you start building, do some minimal street and intersection planning. Then, you can start to reclassify areas.

It’s easier to start in the middle of an area or in a corner, which will make it easier to expand. Also, keep in mind that although city plans with strange shapes are fun, it’s always easiest to start with a grid structure. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, take a look at some big-city map and their central areas: streets set out in blocks are key.

Another tip is to have a large main avenue with narrower roads feeding off of it (or wider ones if you have the money).

2. Keep density in mind

An important prerequisite for growing cities is room to expand. Although it may seem strange to place small buildings on a wide avenue or street, don’t get into debt putting more roads in the middle of these empty spaces!

It’s those empty spaces that’ll let your city’s inhabitants expand their homes, shops, or factories when things in the city improve. With a little patience and time, you’ll witness tremendous growth in your city without having to do too much.

3. Keep the city “clean”

Keeping your city free of abandoned buildings or debris is as important as giving your city space to expand because these old buildings prevent new buildings from being constructed. To get rid of them, all you need to do is use the bulldozer on the land in question.

The game tells you when there are pieces of land like this, so you should check from time to time.

Another thing you should take into consideration: you can change the use of an area of the city, maybe from residential to commercial, for example, but until you demolish the building that was there before, the change won’t apply.

4. Public transport is a good bet

Your citizens will need to get around your city, and typically they’ll use their cars, which will generate lots of traffic jams on the main avenues. To reduce traffic, as well as to avoid excess pollution, fill your city with public transport.

Start with bus stops: start with a main bus station, then place bus stops throughout the city. Bus stops are very inexpensive and will increase your population’s happiness, especially in lower and middle class areas. Also, when you expand your town, don’t forget to expand the bus station with more vehicles before people start complaining that they’re too full.

When things start to improve, you can choose to put in a train station, tram stops, a ferry, or even a local airport. But don’t run before you walk! Start with the bus: it’s good, it works and it’s cheap!

5. Industry: the further from homes, the better

Nobody likes having a factory next to their house, especially if there’s a potential for contaminants. We recommend that you don’t distribute industrial areas around the city, but rather, designate a plot of your land as an industrial area, and try not to go over this area. Ideally, they should be situated as far away as possible from residential areas, like in a corner for example.

6. Have lots of green space

The cheapest way to please your residents is to build a nice environment to live and work in. People love to shop, but they love parks and green areas even more. Don’t be shy about filling your city with parks, areas for sports or other land for outdoor activities.

Parks are also a great antidote to factories. Even if you followed my advice in point 5, you may still have a residential area beside an industrial one. In this case, you might see some angry faces, but building a park next door will cheer them right up!

7. Maintain public facilities

Don’t take too long to build main public facilities like police stations, fire stations, hospitals, or schools. Remember though, keeping them up to date is just as important as building them in the first place.

Take note of complaints from inhabitants (keep an eye out for alerts over houses) and expand facilities when it’s convenient. If they tell you there’s a lot of crime, add a couple of squad cars. Health problems? Expand your hospital.

This practice also applies to public transport: if you receive complaints of it being overcrowded, consider whether it might be worth expanding your fleet of buses.

8. A good mayor isn’t afraid to borrow

In real life, you want to avoid going into debt; in SimCity, things are a little different. When you start your game, you’ll want to build things, and the costs will soon pile up. If this is the case, don’t hesitate to get a bond.

A bond is a loan with interest that increases for each hour of play. Believe me, unless you’re a high roller, a small loan will be very easy to write off, because by starting to build, you’ll have more shopping areas, industry and residential taxes that will earn money to pay it back quickly.

Before drowning your citizens with stratospheric taxes, opt for a bond to start your expansion: people will be happy and won’t leave your city, which ultimately means greater prosperity and debts being paid off.

9. Collaborate with other cities

Whether you share with other users on your land or you own all the cities, don’t pass up the opportunity to collaborate. If you have a small town, it won’t hurt to buy resources in the neighboring city; it will provide extra income and you’ll avoid building plants that you might not need.

In addition, the game allows you to transfer funds between cities. To start your second city off, one option is to allow your biggest city to make regular cash donations.

10. Try to keep everyone happy…but use your head

Just like in reality, citizens in SimCity complain, and requests will appear in the game as small missions. Certainly, completing these gets you achievements and rewards, but remember, you can’t please everyone all the time.
